EDITORIAL There is a great saying…Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes… And it is true. For over 30 years I have given my time and energy to an organisation who I realise have not had my vision for this industry for over 7 years now. So now its time for change, I have joined the new organisation The Hairdressing Council of Ireland who are a breath of fresh air to me. They are a new voice, fresh and exciting and already getting things done. Bridget Haren is heading up the organisation and several key people have signed up with enthusiasm and passion to lead key areas around the country and together as a group represent the totality of the Hairdressing Industry. I am delighted that Irish Icon Frank Hession is the honorary President for the Council. I say JOIN THEM…Empower the change. The time to do it is now. In September, the 1st year of a Degree course in Salon Management will commence in Limerick University for Hairdressers and Barbers. The first semester will lead to a Certificate in Salon Management. It is designed around the industry and its needs. I was delighted to advise on this with Synergy, a group of enterprising hair salon owners from Limerick who went out themselves determined to make changes for the industry as they were not happy waiting around for a federation in Dublin to do it. These are the sort of people I want to be associated with. They have vision, passion and determination to get things done in a very short time. Skillsnet and the Limerick University are also part of this project that is so exciting for the future of our industry… An apprenticeship in Hairdressing is also a priority with work well underway on this too for 2018. Again this was spear headed up by the Synergy group with the help of the Hairdressing Council, Skillsnet, LCETB and Limerick Chamber. Yes, its time for action. Not ‘same old same old’. The Council have taken Rapunzel Foundation on as their charity as it was set up by an Irish Hairdresser Anna Furlong for children and young adults with Alopecia which of course is completely industry related. The Council have joined the OMC World Hairdressing Organisation also and I will do what I do well that is manage a new Team Ireland but this time under the auspices of the Hairdressing Council of Ireland. If you are interested contact me directly. Again I remind you all…nothing changes if nothing changes… the time to change is NOW.

SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO HAIR GROWTH

NEOFOLLICS WHY, HOW & WHAT? Being confronted with hair loss can be an unpleasant experience. We at Trichology Ireland want to help people who are dealing with hair loss to gain control of their situation.

Neofollics Lotion was clinically tested among 30 subjects and evaluated according to the same scientific methods that were used for the evaluation of Finasteride and Minoxidil. Test subjects with Alopecia Androgenetic used the Neofollics lotion for 3 months. They applied the lotion as recommended, twice a day.

Neofollics Hair Technology strives to develop treatments for hair loss which are as effective as possible, without compromising on costs and convenience.

After 3 months, 75% of the test subjects experienced an increase in hair growth. And for 76% there was a reduction of hair loss.

Neofollics Hair Technology’s products have their basis in scientific research, and are of high quality; they are pleasant to use and good value for money.

The combined effect was observed in 59% of the users: both a stimulation of hair growth and a reduction of hair loss. In total, 92% of the users saw an improvement.

Sarah Mason Professional Sarah’s ‘Create Home’ For many years, former Hairdresser of the Year Sarah Mason has been known for her fabulous and elaborate competition work both nationally and internationally that gained her many International medals and awards. After working in some of the leading salons in the country she finally moved to the West of Ireland and built up a strong client base quickly. The time finally came when she knew that the next challenge for her was to open the doors of her own business. Based in the heart of Galway City the ‘Sarah Mason Professional’ Salon ethos is creating wonderful energy and style in this centre of excellence that is Sarah’s new ‘creative home’. With a high focus and passion for education she knows it is purely refreshing to direct her own team and help them to express their own innovation for their future careers. While working as part of the Wella Professionals Style Council she chose to stock her salon exclusively with the Wella Professionals Brand. However earlier this year she decided to extend her ranges with Sassoon Professional and secured the first Sassoon Partnership salon in Galway,

”I wanted something completely different to ensure complete innovation and creativity throughout my team and something exciting for our clients hair”.

Believe it or Not‌.Marie Antoinette Syndrome The Marie Antoinette Syndrome is the sudden whitening of the hair. The event was named the syndrome was the observation that the hair of Queen Marie Antoinette of France turned stark white after her capture during the French Revolution the night before her execution by guillotine. The syndrome is a variant of alopecia areata diffusa or autoimmune non-scarring hair loss that affects selectively all pigmented hairs, leaving only the white hair behind. Triggers activating the autoimmune mechanisms have been extreme sorrow or extreme fear or after fits of rage. There is also noted recording of the English Martyr Sir Thomas More. He turned white overnight before his execution. The term canities subita has also been used for this disorder. Sources: Wikipedia and Jama Network.

COLOUR EXPERT AWARD Presented to Karen Whelan of Aidan Fitzgerald, Blackrock, Dublin

K

aren Whelan of the Aidan Fitzgerald salon has received recognition as the First Colour Expert Salon in Ireland by The Good Salon Guide. This award recognises the exceptional level of training and expertise that Karen and her Colour Technicians have achieved. This is the first award of its kind by The Good Salon Guide in Ireland. In an industry that has been largely dominated by men at top for the past 50 years in Ireland this is the first time a woman has been awarded an International Accreditation for her expertise, level of training and ability to demonstrate her skills in colour within the industry. All the companies L’Oréal, Matrix, Wella, Alfaparf and Schwarzkopf are offering colour specialist degree training which has raised the standard of professional hair colouring in Ireland to an international level. The Good Salon Guide is a Michelin Star rating group that accredits all hair salons in Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales.

42

Karen Whelan is a native Dublin and studied hairdressing at the VEC Crumlin. She went on to serve her apprenticeship with industry icon Frank Hession where she was recognised as a talented and enterprising trainee. She completed her full training but quickly discovered that colour was her passion. She pursued a career with L’Oréal where she took up a position as Technical Manager with responsibility for all training in Ireland. This position gave her an incredible insight into the colour market and her skills were regularly sought when colour went wrong in the salon sector. Twenty years ago Karen joined forces with Aidan Fitzgerald in Blackrock and took over as Technical Manager of the Colour Room, on the 1st Floor of the Salon, with seventeen working chairs and a team of 6 Colour Specialists and assistants. This state of the art Colour Floor provides quality colour services and treatments to clients by a highly skilled Colour Team using products that include L’Oréal, Matrix and Natulique. Karen has regularly featured on Off the Rails, The Gerry Ryan Show and has travelled to Paris, London and Iceland

with the Aidan Fitzgerald Creative Team demonstrating their skills. She works a busy column which includes a list of celebrity clientele from Ministers to Hollywood Stars - Kiera Knightly and Colin Farrell and a well-established discerning client base while managing a dynamic young team. Karen is hands-on with colour training evenings for apprentices and is constantly at the forefront of the colour industry. Karen loves the “light bulb” moment when apprentices come in to their own with colouring and develop their own style with confidence. Karen realises the importance of advising her clients to update and adapt their colours on a regular basis. The award is being presented to Karen Whelan by Dawson Penn the founder of The Good Salon Guide with special guest, Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Enterprise, Mary Mitchell O’Connor.
