EDITORIAL Since our last publication, many notable events have taken place across the industry, particularly our own annual event - BEST of the BEST - which took place at the prestigious Mansion House. We have all the results inside. After the successful launch of the Certificate in Management at the University of Limerick, a course that is tailored for the hairdressing industry, I am delighted to announce that this course will be available in Athlone in January 2018. Image Skillsnet, in conjunction with the Hairdressing Council of Ireland (HCI) and the University of Limerick, are now taking enrollment for this course. By investing just one day every three weeks, you will learn how to manage your salon in a more effective and efficient manner, to take you and your business to the next level. Thank you to all the employers and trainees who took part in the two National Hairdressing Apprenticeship Surveys that the Image Learning and Development Training Newtwork and the Hairdressing Council produced. It was a very informative result. The Hairdressing Council of Ireland has spearheaded a proposal with Image Skillsnet for a formal Apprenticeship Scheme within Hairdressing, which was submitted to the National Apprenticeship Council last month. This is designed firstly to enhance skills within the sector, and secondly to attract young people back into hairdressing, which is perceived as a difficult sector in which to make a sustainable career. While there is a reasonably healthy hairdressing sector within the Dublin area, this is not replicated in other parts of the country. Creating apprenticeship opportunities in cities and small town across the country will increase job opportunities for young people within their own community, will help to keep communities alive, and will help to build sustainable employment into the future. But all of this is contingent on the sector not over-pricing itself. The Hairdressing Council of Ireland has lobbied the Government on behalf of its members against any increase in the current 9% VAT rate on hairdressing services in the next budget. The industry is still experiencing a very difficult economic climate, despite an apparent upsurge in the economy generally. Retaining the 9% VAT rate will assist the industry in maintaining current levels of employment, and expanding these where possible. There is also much speculation within the media that the Government plans to increase the Minimum Wage by 30c in line with the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission. This prospect, together with the possibility of a VAT increase, is causing huge concern within the hairdressing sector, which operates on very tight margins in order to be cost competitive. There are no reports of any consistent upsurge in business across the sector (other than in Dublin), such as would accommodate increased pay or VAT rates. Such increases, in the view of HCI members, would have negative results for the sector, and would simply drive more workers onto the dole queues. Thank you to all who came to speak to the Hairdressing Council at the RDS recently at the Professional Beauty Show. It is always great to see old friends and meet new people. JOIN the Hairdressing Council and let us make things happen‌Nothing changes if nothing changes.

HESSION HAIRDRESSING UNVEILS NEWLY DESIGNED SALON IN DRUMCONDRA
4
H
ession Hairdressing Drumcondra, a cornerstone of the local community and firm favourite with both locals and celebrities, has recently undergone a major facelift. The newly designed salon is both luxurious and modern with a distinctly international high gloss feel. Chic grey tones paired with soft greens and cool Carrera marble create a modern but relaxing atmosphere. It’s the simple touches such
as the backlit full wall mirror, streamlined surfaces and mixed metallic accents that create Hession Hairdressing Drumcondra’s effortlessly cool style. With renowned designer, Kari Rocca behind the interiors, it is clear both comfort and style are at the forefront of the new Drumcondra salon.
A contemporary, timeless boutique style environment reflective of luxury hotels while at the same time providing a tranquil luxurious space for clients.
5
A particular highlight of the new salon is the addition of a secluded back wash room which is the epitome of relaxation. Hidden away behind black sliding glass doors, this exclusive area is a real treat for the senses with six reclining massage chairs, ambient music and individual lighting for each basin which can be tailored to each client’s preference.
Speaking about her vision for the space, Kari commented: “We wanted to creative distinctive zones within the salon, by introducing a closed washroom using smoked glass & smoked mirrors we succeeded in creating a tranquil pod with a relaxing spa like feel.”
“We wanted to creative distinctive zones within the salon, by introducing a closed washroom using smoked glass & smoked mirrors we succeeded in creating a tranquil pod with a relaxing spa like feel.”
6
Another noteworthy addition to Hession Hairdressing Drumcondra revamp is the bespoke exclusive BUFF Make-up Suite on the upper level of the salon, this is the flagship salon to award winning Irish range, BUFF Make-Up. In keeping with the ground floor, this private space oozes elegance with instagram worthy marble surfaces and gold finishes creating a polished
and more feminine look. The room is separated from the hustle of bustle of the busy salon by smoked glass doors creating a quiet boutique like space perfect for private group bookings both corporate and looking for a more intimate and personalised experience.
“Our goal was to create a chic and relaxing atmosphere with a modern twist and Kari Rocca has done an amazing job in bringing this vision to life. - Paul Hession Hession Hairdressing is located at 108 Drumcondra Rd Upper, Drumcondra, Dublin. www.hessionhairdressing.com

VISIONARY Ireland Awards A hub of activity and excitement was evident as competitive hairdressers prepared their looks for the annual Visionary Ireland Hair Awards. Founded by the legendary Anthony Mascolo in 2004, the Visionary Awards are known for recognising and embracing creative hairdressers and their vision. The Awards have now become a very important part of Irelands Competition scene. Alternative Hair founder Tony Rizzo was MC in Dublin and was joined by International chorographer John Walford and his chosen judging panel who were:
40
Maggie Rizzo(co-founder of Alternative Hair) with Allan Hogg, Joanne O’Neill, Amanda Whittome, Shane Bennett, Pino Troncone, and Adee Phelan. By the end of the evening three Irish stylists had secured their place at the International Visionary final in London at the Royal Albert Hall. They were Ciaran Cannon – Zeba (ladies cut&colour), Chris O’Riordan – ST4Men (mens cut&colour) and Alison O’Brien - Bespoke (avant garde). Congratulations
SO...what to do to be on stage next year… The process all starts by sending in a photo of your choice to ‘Irish Hairdresser Magazine’ to enter the first stage. These images are then sent to the Alternative Hair office for Icon Anthony Mascolo to judge. When he makes the decision, the chosen finalists then compete in the live final in Dublin during the ‘BEST of the BEST’ event. A special panel of judges are chosen by Tony Rizzo to find 3 winners. These winners get through to the International final in London where approx 35 finalists from many countries present a model each.
The intricacy and quality of the work shown is always highly impressive and it is an almost impossible task to select the winners. Last year Amanda Whittome of the Hugh Campbell Hair Group was one of the three ‘Ireland’ winners and went on to win the International Avant Garde title which led to the Hugh Campbell Hair Group being asked to produce their own show at Alternative Hair.

Hairdressers Shouldn’t Retail
“Ok, that’s controversial, so let’s be clear, a hairdressing salon reception should have, and sell hair related products & equipment”. - Peter Munton But hairdressers should not purely retail products to their clients. They should be analysing their hair / needs, then from that information, recommend the products that will answer those needs. Not selling or retailing but advising and recommending. 44
The Aim So let’s start from the beginning. What should be a hairdresser’s aim? Well, I feel it can be put into one sentence. I have seen many salon mission statements, which include things like: • “We want to make your salon experience as unique and memorable as you are.” • “We promise to pay close attention to the details of your service and maintain the highest standard of cleanliness in our salon” • “To ensure that our clients are always valued individuals who are respected “ There are many statements that cover all aspects of a salon visit, all laudable and very important. But all are to no avail if the client doesn’t like their hair and can’t keep it looking great between visits.
How to achieve it The following are my conclusions following many years in salon education and observing salon management, staff & customers. There are many pieces to the
A well trained hairdresser will give every customer the full service they deserve.
hairdressing jigsaw puzzle, more of which I will cover in future articles. For now I will discuss home use products including, cleansing, caring, styling, finishing products and hair styling equipment. Rather than selling products, staff members should fully understand the products & equipment the salon stocks and more importantly, they should • Understand the effect they have on all hair types. • The best products for all hair conditions, including chemically treated hair. • Conditions resulting from the client’s lifestyle. It’s all about mental attitude; the thought process should not be “I need to sell this customer a product”. It should be “What do I need to do to make this clients hair look and feel fantastic!”. Everything is of equal importance: • • • • • • •
The cut. The colour. The finished look. Cleansing products. Caring products, Styling products. How to style the hair at home.
Combining Skills & Product Training Most salon training is achieved with hairdressing skills trained first and retail training is a separate, independent subject, almost an afterthought. I feel that all hairdressing staff should learn product usage along with skills learning, as one subject. Then as the hairdresser is carrying out the initial consultation they are listening & asking for information that will decide the products and the recommended usage. These details should be communicated to the client as the consultation is being completed. Of course, this advice may change a little when the stylist has worked with the hair.
Advice & Building Trusted Relationships Giving the information as part of the consultation will, to the client be seen as what it is, advice on how to look and feel good. Not a sale at the end of the service. It’s important to remember every client is not just paying for a haircut, colour or wash & blowdry, they are paying for a complete service. This should include advice, along with the cut etc.

LOST SOULS At the RDS on the HJ Live Stage, Marina Hayes and her team from Confession Box produced a show called LOST SOULS’ to highlight Mental Health issues.
W
e all know someone with issues that we can help and support. But remember to mind your own mental health too.
The story unfolded with the main model Natasha being the actual lost soul trying to escape. The back of her hair had rope and tulip braids to emulate her puppet strings. The other four models represented her emotions…. such as her need for ‘Personal Space’ which was represented by a crown of thorns ie ”don’t come in to my space or touch me when I am upset”.
46
Her lack of confidence was portrayed as a ‘Confidence Crown’ that she puts on every day just to pretend she is ok….but she is NOT. ‘Anxiety’ was shown as all fluffy and soft exterior but really inside she feels wound up tight because anxiety is her cross. ‘Drowning’ showed how she felt she was just going down in the waves of depression and despair. Well done for highlighting Mental Health Issues through Hair.

Top 5 Tips: Twitter There can be no doubt that social media has changed the way we market our salons. It’s offered us a way to connect directly and regularly to our customers. In this issue I offer my top 5 tips for using twitter in communicating your brand message.
#5. Customise
Customizing your twitter page is part of a bigger marketing strategy for business. It is important that you make your twitter page your own. It’s look and feel should fit in nicely with your branding.
#4. Follow thought leaders
So, who to follow? When I first set up my twitter account I didn’t tweet at all. I used twitter to learn from and keep up with the top people in the world for my industry. Daily I received tweets from these thought leaders pointing me in the direction of excellent articles and resources on graphic design, web design and marketing. I didn’t have to search them out, they came to me.
#3. Use Lists
As you follow more and more twitter accounts you may start to feel overwhelmed by the amount of tweets coming your way. This is normal. Because the flow of information is so unrelenting you need a way to organize your twitter accounts into easily digestible chunks. The lists feature allows you to do just that.
#2. Interact
When you read an interesting Tweet don’t be afraid to interact with it. This action will not go unnoticed by the person who sent the tweet so its a great way to grab their attention.
#1. Be Helpful
The number One mistake I see businesses on twitter make is using the platform to try to sell-sell-sell! As with any social media sites the aim should always be to build a community around your area of expertise. Sure, the long term goal is to increase your bottom line through increased sales but you have to earn the trust of your followers first. If you use twitter as a broadcasting tool you will fail plain and simple. Try listening to your followers first. What are they actually interested in ? Can you help them and in so doing demonstrate your knowledge. Engage with your followers. Ask them questions and lend a helping hand without looking for something in return. Try making all your tweets informative, useful, or funny. Point them in the direction of interesting articles , show them new designs and offer your expert advice when and where you can. Do not tweet endlessly about a sale or reduction in price. Be helpful. Build a community of loyal followers around your area of expertise and when those followers require your service or product you will be top of mind. This takes time and dedication but the rewards from doing it right will be worth the effort. www.studio93.ie

I
started competiting 4 years ago and when I won my first competition I decided to dedicate my life to up-skilling and creating a business brand for my own unique Paul Mac style. I wanted my work to inspire people. I’ve always said I’d rather be Marmite than Vanilla! I spent the next couple of years honing my craft and entering every competition there was! However I had no success. I failed and failed and was going home empty handed sometimes not even placing in the top 10. The spectators loved my styles but Judges hated them. I was told my competition styles were too crazy and to tone it down. Also that I needed to go more commercial or quit competiting and concentrate on editorial work… but this only spurred me on more. Some of my mentors told me to stick at it, to go with my gut feeling and stay true to myself and in time the industry would come around…or catch up with me! Heartbreak after heartbreak… it was bloody tough and a financial nightmare but I never stopped believing that I could produce my own brand look even when many laughed in my face. I knew one day I’d turn it all round. For years I had people grind me down saying that I had no chance of success and that I was nothing special- just a little barber from Cork! …..But i never gave up dreaming. I think it’s a Cork thing…they don’t call people from Cork ‘Rebels’ for nothing! It just encouraged me more to keep going and prove my talent would be a success. I kept learning new techniques and trying new styes for my own progression. I’ve had more knockbacks than successes in my 14 year career. “Life is a Marathon not a Sprint” My life was a bit of a mess for the first 30 years but there is always time to turn things around and with my motto of ‘Surround yourself with like-minded, positive people who support you’ I did. And my finance Charlotte keeps me grounded….as they say behind every great man is an even greater woman I am always so thankful for the support and proud to represent the Underdogs! Stay Weird”
