PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience.
President Douglas G. Lee
During the 2013-14 academic year, 133 Waynesburg University studentathletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg. Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport.

On behalf of Waynesburg University students, faculty and staff, I would like to thank you for your interest in our athletic programs. I hope that you enjoy another great year of athletic competition at Waynesburg University!

KICK PANCREATIC CANCER For the sixth-consecutive year, the Waynesburg University women’s soccer team will host its annual “Kick Pancreatic Cancer” event. In conjunction with its Oct. 25 home match against Washington & Jefferson College, the team will organize the event in efforts to raise money and spread awareness to fight the deadly disease. The idea for “Kick Pancreatic Cancer” was created back in 2009, when then-senior midfielder Catherine Moore planned and organized the event after her father, Kenneth Moore, was diagnosed with the disease. Mr. Moore, who served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Waynesburg University, passed away at the age of 59 on Nov. 6, 2010. Through its first two years, the event raised around $15,000 for the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. According to the Hirshberg Foundation’s web site, pancreatic cancer is one of the few cancers for which survival rates have not been improved substantially over the last 40 years. The average life expectancy after a diagnosis is just three to six months and just four percent of those diagnosed live beyond five years.
The Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research’s goal is supporting the ongoing efforts to find a cure for the disease. Now in its 16th year, the foundation has dedicated its efforts to significantly raise awareness and understanding about the malody, a disease that continues to be one of the most fatal and underfunded types of cancer. Members of the Jacket soccer team have collectively brought attention to the event the last fewyears through fundraising and advertising to not only the campus community but the local community of Waynesburg as well. Last year, the soccer programs reached out to the Waynesburg Chamber of Commerce, churches and youth soccer programs in the area. Team leaders also used social media avenues, such as a Facebook event that was created to inform students of the event and also provide information about the disease.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW The Waynesburg University women’s soccer program opens a new chapter in its history this year as Laura Heethuis takes over as head coach. Her first task will be to replace a pair of All-PAC selections and four regular starters from one year ago.
Junior Ciara Scott started 16 of the 17 games in which she appeared last year and boasted a respectable 1.76 goals against average. She also notched three shutouts and was lauded as a PAC Defensive/Goalkeeper of the Week.
First-team all-conference selection Susie Godwin and honorable mention pick Missy Coleman helped lead the Yellow Jackets to an 8-8-1 overall record and 5-3-1 mark in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play. However, the Jackets do have senior Emily Mullady back after she claimed honorable mention All-PAC laurels following the 2013 campaign.
The Jackets will have a tough time replacing all-conference defender Toria Shepherd, but senior Jordan Eicher looks ready to assume a bigger role in the Waynesburg defense.
Mullady started all 17 of Waynesburg’s games last season and recorded a team-best five assists. She also found the back of the net three times for a total of 11 points and was honored as a PAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Heethuis was also able to keep a solid looking recruiting class mostly intact for her first year on the job. Along with 11 incoming freshmen, Waynesburg native Jenna Bohach has transferred to the team after seeing time as a starter at Pitt Greensburg. Heethuis will get her first action as a head coach this weekend at the Defiance College Purple and Gold Classic.
The Yellow Jackets also return their leading scorer from a year ago, senior Natalie Abraham. The Munhall, Pennsylvania native started all 16 games in which she appeared and tallied six goals for the Orange and Black. Like Mullady, Abraham was also honored as a PAC Offensive Player of the Week.
www.waynesburgsports.com
The Jackets’ scoring depth should be bolstered by a trio of individuals who scored at least three goals each this past fall. Senior Tayler Bombalski recorded three goals, while junior Karleigh Murphey and senior Taylor Bombalski contributed four and three goals, respectively. Murphey also assisted on a pair of scores. Along with several talented scorers, Waynesburg also returns its starting goalkeeper of the past two seasons. 5
Junior Karleigh Murphy returns after scoring four goals and tallying two assists during the 2013 season.

* - PAC Playoff Game

PAC OVERVIEW Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington and Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Saint Vincent became fullfledged member of the NCAA last year and the 2011-12 school year saw Geneva do the same after acting as a provisional member. Chatham University became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2010-11, the conference had 39 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 19 in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III national championship events. All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships.
The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Grove City women captured the 2013-14 trophies. True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named a record 852 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW The Waynesburg University men’s soccer program opens a new chapter in its history this year as Brad Heethuis takes over as head coach. He inherits a team with plenty of returning offensive fire power and its starting goalkeeper that combined to put together a 10-4-3 overall record. With that in mind, the Yellow Jackets should once again be in the mix for one of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference’s (PAC) four playoff spots and just coming up short of that goal with a fifth-place regular season finish. Waynesburg is led by a nine-man senior class that includes Brandon Daughtry, who won the starting job in net as a sophomore and never relinquished it. He was a two-time PAC Defensive/Goalkeeper of the Week and finished third in the PAC with a .793 save percentage in 2013. The Jackets also bring back a trio of backup keepers, including junior Nathan Ribar, who appeared in five games. He made 20 saves, won his only decision of the year and sported a .800 save percentage.
www.waynesburgsports.com
Along with having a veteran in net to keep the other team from running up the score, Waynesburg returns five of its top six performers in terms of total points, goals and assists for the 2014 campaign. A balanced Jacket attack features four players who found the back of the net seven times each in 2013 as part of a 51goal attack that ranked first in the conference in both total goals and goals per game (3.0).
While Lemke stared all 17 games, Nelson did his damage in just two starts over 14 contests. Both standouts notched a pair of assists each over standout campaigns. Sophomore Zack Benedict was another effective contributor off the bench and will certainly be pushing for a starting job this fall. The Edinboro, Pa. native tallied five goals in 15 appearances during a sterling freshman campaign. The Jackets also get their top assist man back for his senior season. Nick Brommer set up his teammates for five goals over 17 starts, a mark that was not only good enough for sixth in the PAC rankings, but it also helped him earn honorable mention All-PAC laurels. Brommer added two goals of his own for nine total points. Turning to the defensive third of the pitch, junior John Allen started 15 games as a sophomore and is Waynesburg’s strongest returner in that part of the field. Senior Justin Barylski, junior Connor Walsh, junior Peter Byrnes and sophomore Dimitri Arvanitopulos all saw plenty of field time on defense in 2013. Heethuis and his Jackets begin their run to a PAC playoff berth on Friday, Aug. 29, when they face off with Defiance College. Start time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Despite not starting a game, current junior Victor Browne, who appeared in all 17 games last year, finished second on the team in goals (seven), assists (four) and total points (18). Senior James Sneed, who was honored as a PAC Offensive Player of the Week, also tallied seven goals and chipped in an assist for 15 total points. Waynesburg’s other two seven-goal scorers are seniors Colin Nelson and Cody Lemke.
