PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience. During the 2014-15 academic year, 110 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg. Also this year, the Yellow jacket men were awarded the PAC

President Douglas G. Lee

All-Sports Trophy for the first time in University history. PAC All-Sports Trophies are awarded annually to the schools that perform the best across the board in league competition. Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport. On behalf of Waynesburg University students, faculty and staff, I would like to thank you for your interest in our

athletic programs. I hope that you enjoy another great year of athletic competition at Waynesburg University!

2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW Despite the loss of an All-PAC backcourt, the Waynesburg University women’s basketball team is expected to stick around the top half of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) standings this season. With the return of three of the team’s top-five scorers, Waynesburg looks to ride tremendous guard depth and one of the top post players in the conference to a successful 2015-16 campaign. Eighth-year head coach Sam Jones, who is the winningest head coach in program history (102-89) is looking to build off last year’s 15-12 overall record, which included a 12-6 mark in PAC action. He is expected to lean heavily on a small, but very experienced senior class that will likely feature three starters. Point guard Lauren Blair and forwards Heather Davis and Maura Bobby have combined to appear in 230 games, 116 of which were starts over three seasons in orange and black. Blair started 22-of-24 games this past winter and averaged 4.2 assists per contest, which was the secondhighest mark in the conference. The veteran put up 6.5 points and 2.1 steals per contest as a junior, which was her second season as the everyday starter at the point. Davis started all 27 games in which she appeared last year and posted solid all-around numbers. She averaged 7.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest. She also racked up 22 steals and 13 blocks.

www.waynesburgsports.com

Bobby appeared in 27 games, most of which came as a reserve. The Poland, Ohio, native proved to be one of the Jackets’ top bench scorers, posting 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Her 26 steals ranked third on the team.

6

The bulk of the Orange and Black roster is composed of six sophomores and six juniors, many of which are expected to post significant numbers and battle for starting minutes. Junior point guard Kassidy O’Keefe, who transferred in from Division II Slippery Rock prior to last year’s semester break, appeared in 19 games and brings defensive toughness and excellent ball movement skills to the roster. Fellow junior guard Katie Gehlmann has already logged 54 games in a Waynesburg uniform.

Last year, she averaged 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest. Waynesburg’s front court depth is bolstered mightily by juniors Haley Delaney and Katie Hoover. The 6-1 Delaney and 5-11 Hoover provide height in the post, as well as statistical contributions. Delaney started 16-of-27 games as a sophomore and swatted away a team-high 27 blocks. That total ranked fifth in the PAC. Hoover added 11 blocks in 21 games off the bench. Third-year player Kortlyn Carr logged minutes in 22 games off the bench. First-year Jacket Carolena Gasbarro will make her team debut after sitting out last year following two seasons at PAC rival Bethany. Gasbarro was a four-year letter-winner at Fort Cherry High School. Waynesburg’s sophomore class is highlighted by 5-11 forward Addy Knetzer, who proved to be one of the league’s most dominant paint presences as a freshman. The Houston, Pennsylvania, native finished second on the team with 9.6 points per game and yanked down a team-best 6.6 rebounds per contest. Knetzer recorded four double-doubles, including a 25-point, 11-rebound effort against Bethany and was a three-time Corvias ECAC Division III South Rookie of the Week. The rest of Waynesburg’s sophomore class is extremely guard-heavy. Sam Chadwick, Mackenna Drazich, Rachel Eng, Brittany Hutchinson and Joanne Barlamas all saw minutes of the court in the Jacket backcourt as freshmen. Speaking of freshmen, Jones and assistant coach Kevin Pusateri have brought in four rookies to this year’s team, all of which will likely play one of the guard positions.

HEAD COACH SAM JONES College Coaching Experience 2003-06 -- Men’s Assistant Coach, Mt. Union 2006-07 -- Women’s Assistant Coach, Mt. Union 2008-Present -- Head Coach, Waynesburg Sam Jones is back for his eighth season as the head of the Waynesburg women’s basketball team after leading his Yellow Jackets to threestraight winnings seasons, including back-to-back 20-win campaigns (2010-11 and 2011-12). After five years on the bench, Jones boasts an 102-89 overall record, which ranks him second on the school’s rankings in terms of overall wins and winning percentage (.526). In 2011-12, Jones led his Jackets to a 20-8 overall record that included a 14-4 mark in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play and a slew of memorable moments. The Jackets secured not one, but two signature wins over NCAA qualifier Saint Vincent during the regular season. The first of those two victories came during a season-best nine-game winning streak. For the second-straight year, Waynesburg scored an opening-round victory in the postseason conference tournament and then came two points shy of advancing to the PAC title game. For his efforts, Jones earned his first PAC Coach of the Year award and was joined three of his top players on the all-conference teams. Senior point guard Hannah Hunter led the way with a first-team nod, while junior guards Jessi Drayer and Brittany Spencer earned second-team and honorable mention nods, respectively. Hunter finished her senior campaign as Waynesburg’s leader in assists (5.3 apg) and steals (2.9 spg), while also finishing second on the team in scoring (13.5 ppg). She also set the school record for career assists this past winter and surpassed the 1,000-career point mark. During the 2010-11 campaign, the Jackets exploded for a 21-9 overall record, the program’s best since 1994-95, won its first PAC playoff game since the 2005-06 when they took down Washington & Jefferson, and capped the year by winning the school’s first ECAC South title as the top seed and host team. The 2010-11 Jacket women also made a big mark in the school record book by breaking five team records and three individual marks. As a squad, Waynesburg set new program highs in field goals attempted in a season (1,962), free throws made in a season (405), free throw percentage in a season (71.4 percent), rebounds in a season (1,324) and team blocks in a season (115). The Yellow Jackets also set three new individual records, two of which were achieved by four-time All-PAC forward Elisha Jones. Jones set the school career blocks record with 150 and attempted 445 field goals this season, which is the top mark for one year of play. Junior point guard Hannah Hunter also wrote her name into the record books with 132 assists, the most for a Waynesburg player in a single season. Over his first three years at the helm, Jones has increased his team’s overall and Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) wins total and guided sevearl players to All-PAC honors. During the 2008-09 season, his first as the leader of the Waynesburg women’s basketball team, Jones brought some national attention to the Yellow Jackets as he guided them to one of the biggest one-year turnarounds in all of Division III. After taking over the team in late April of 2008, Jones led the young team to an 8-18 season, a seven-win improvement from their 1-25 effort in 2007. That increase tied for the 12th-largest in the D-III ranks last season. Jones also coached then-sophomore Elisha Jones and thenfreshman Callie White to All-PAC laurels. Jones was also named a PAC Women’s Player of the Week and White was named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week back on Jan. 21.

Jones came to the Yellow Jackets from Mount Union where he spent a total of four years as an assistant coach with both the men’s and women’s programs. While he only spent one year as the head assistant with the women’s program in 2006-2007, Jones was part of a Purple Raiders’ team that upset a pair of nationally-ranked opponents.

13

Before his work with the women’s team, Jones spent three years (2003-2006) with the Mt. Union men. During that span, Jones helped develop five All-Ohio Athletic Conference selections and a pair of 1,000-point scorers. Jones started his basketball coaching career in 1995 at Grenville Christian College, a high-school level institution located in Brockville, Ontario, approximately 70 miles south of Ottawa. He served the next five years as head junior varsity boys’ basketball coach before accepting the varsity coaching job in 2000. One year earlier, Jones also assumed the head coaching job of the varsity girls’ basketball team at the school. In addition to his basketball duties at Grenville Christian, Jones coached men’s volleyball and track & field while serving as an assistant athletic director and physical education teacher. Jones recently earned his Masters of Business Administration degree from Waynesburg after graduating from the University of Mount Union with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education and minors in education and exercise science. He currently resides just south of Washington, Pa. with his wife Ruth-Ann and children Hannah, Lucas, Rebekah and Nathan.

PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. In addition to its 21 sponsored championship sports, the PAC partnered with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) to create the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC) in 2014, with both kicking off league schedules during the spring of 2015. The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Waynesburg men and Grove City women captured the 2014-15 trophies. Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 200 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 935 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above. During the 2014-15 academic year, nine PAC student-athletes were honored with Capital One Academic All-America honors. Also, the Thomas More women’s basketball program and W&J junior wrestler Nick Carr claimed NCAA Division III national championships in their respective sports.

Founded in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Waynesburg University is located on a traditional campus in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, with three adult centers located in the Pittsburgh region. The University is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and is one of only 23 Bonner Scholar schools in the country, offering local, regional and international opportunities to touch the lives of others through service.   Offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs, Waynesburg University designs its curriculum to meet the needs of today’s students. Undergraduates can choose among more than 70 programs of study, including the traditional liberal arts such as English, history, biology, and more, and innovative fields such as athletic training, biblical ministries, computer forensics, criminal justice, forensic science, marine biology, nursing, sports information, sports management, and many others.    The University’s Graduate and Professional Studies Program, located at three convenient centers in the immediate Pittsburgh region, offers accelerated, evening programs geared for adult students in the fields of business, nursing, education, and counseling psychology.

A Waynesburg University education not only connects the theoretical and the practical, it also connects the world of ideas with a commitment to serving others. Every student engages in service through personal experiences and specific courses under the guidance of faculty mentors. High school students who are actively involved in community service can qualify for the Bonner Scholars program, which provides scholarship assistance for those who commit to weekly volunteer service.   The University’s commitment to service learning and service leadership includes national and international mission and service trips. Participating in these experiences broadens students’ perspectives and education.   To learn more, visit the University website: www.waynesburg.edu Or call toll-free: 1-800-225-7393 Waynesburg University 51 West College Street Waynesburg, PA 15370
