PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 20 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience. During the 2015-16 academic year, 100 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of

HEAD COACH MARK CHRISTNER College Coaching Experience ‘99-’02: Asst. Women’s Coach, Calvin College ‘02-’10: Asst. Men’s Coach, Calvin College ‘10-present: Head Coach, Waynesburg University
Mark Christner returns as head coach of the Waynesburg University men’s basketball team for the 2016-17 season, his seventh year directing the Yellow Jackets. He is coming off a 10-16 season this past winter, but the Jackets played their best ball in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play, going 10-8 in league action. Highlights of the season included Christner picking up his first win over Thomas More and defeating perennial PAC powerhouse Saint Vincent in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. It also marked the first time the Jackets beat the Bearcats on the road since before 1990. The 2015-16 campaign concluded with then-seniors B.J. Durham and D.J. Ritchie being presented with all-conference accolades. After inheriting a two-win team in 2010, the program rose to register 18 wins during the 2014-15 season, including a 12-4 mark in conference play and an appearance in the PAC men’s basketball championship. Christner directed the team to a nine-game win streak at the end of the regular season, extending through the semifinal round of the PAC Tournament. In the tournament, the Yellow Jackets earned victories over Grove City and Bethany, their third triumphs over each team during the 2014-15 campaign. After a 72-66 loss to Saint Vincent in the PAC Championship, Waynesburg ended its year with a berth in the ECAC South Tournament, its second consecutive postseason appearance. Individually, then-seniors Jason Propst and Jacob Fleegle were named to all-conference teams. Propst earned a spot on the All-PAC first-team, while Fleegle enjoyed a second-team nod. Both standout forwards also eclipsed the 1,000-career-point as seniors. During the 2013-14 season, the Yellow Jackets made their biggest improvements to that point under Christner by posting a 15-12 overall mark and a program-record nine wins in PAC action (9-7). As a result, Christner was honored as the PAC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year. Waynesburg enjoyed a six-game win streak, its longest since the 2002-03 season, and the Orange and Black swept conference rival W&J for the first time since 2003-04.The 2-0 mark against the Presidents was the first time the Jackets swept any conference foe since 2006-07. Waynesburg went on to duplicate the feat against Grove City and Thiel, before ending the season with one of its biggest wins in recent years. The Jackets upended the two-time defending PAC champions from Saint Vincent 68-62 in the final game of the regular season.
www.waynesburgsports.com
Christner’s Jackets continued their hot play into the postseason, where they both hosted and won their first PAC quarterfinal playoff game since 2005-06. Waynesburg defeated W&J, 62-58. The Jackets also qualified for an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament for the first time in 16 years with a berth in the ECAC Southwest Tournament.
11
Christner’s debut campaign in 2010-11 saw the Yellow Jackets take steps in the right direction. During that season, the Jackets increased their win output from the previous season by four. Waynesburg’s biggest highlight of the year came in the final regular season game, which saw the Yellow Jackets upset a 17-7 Geneva team. Christner arrived at Waynesburg from a very successful Calvin College (Mich.) program. During his eight years (2002-2010) as an assistant men’s basketball coach and head men’s junior varsity coach, Christner helped lead the Knights to four berths in the NCAA Division III national tournament. During his time on the bench, Calvin posted an impressive 158-73 record and won three Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) regular season titles. Over that same stretch, the Knights won three MIAA tournament titles and advanced all the way to the NCAA Division III Final Four in 2005. Prior to working with the men’s team, Christner broke in as a coach at Calvin with the women’s basketball team from 1999 to 2002. In 2000, the Calvin women made it all the way to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16. Along with his impressive coaching credentials at Calvin, Christner is affiliated with the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He has worked as a coach and administrator of multiple basketball tournaments and camps. Christner earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1999 from Calvin, where he majored in history and minored in physical education with an emphasis in coaching. He went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in physical education with a pedagogy emphasis in 2005 from Western Michigan University. Christner serves as Waynesburg’s compliance officer to the NCAA and is married to his wife, Sara. They have a son Leo and two daughters, Elin and Nora.

The Pittsburgh native started all 24 games he appeared in during

He finished his Waynesburg career by shooting 44 percent from the field and tallying 39 three-point field goals during that span. Altmeyer’s coaching duties include recruiting, directing film exchange with opponents and individual player development.
JACOB FLEEGLE

Known primarily for his exploits on the basketball court, Fleegle started 102 of the 110 games in which he appeared in a Yellow Jacket uniform. After starting 17-of-25 contests as a freshman, the Jennerstown, Pennsylvania, native never left Waynesburg’s starting five over four standout years. Fleegle cemented his spot in program history during the 201415 campaign, when he became the 33rd 1,000-point scorer in Waynesburg men’s basketball history. He was also honored as a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Week and
named second-team All-PAC. Fleegle tallied 1,070 points, 438 rebounds, 50 blocks, 171 assists and 86 steals as a Jacket. He was especially proficient at the free throw line, where he ended his collegiate career with a .797 shooting percentage. Fleegle shined in the classroom, where he was a three-time member of the PAC Spring Academic Honor Roll and an eight-semester member of the Waynesburg University Dean’s List. He has also been lauded as a member of the 2015 Capital One NCAA Division III Academic All-District IV Men’s Basketball Team and represented Waynesburg at the second annual Presidents’ Athletic Conference’s (PAC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year Banquet in the spring of 2015. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education with an Athletic Administration/Coaching concentration at Waynesburg.

PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. In addition to its 21 sponsored championship sports, the PAC partnered with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) to create the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC) in 2014, with both kicking off league schedules during the spring of 2015. The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Grove City women captured the 2015-16 trophies. Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 200 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 939 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.
