“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” ~ Nelson Mandela, First black President of South Africa, 1994-1999 “The whole scene was extremely beautiful; the banks and islands dotted over the river are adorned with sylvan vegetation of great variety of color and form...no one can imagine the beauty of the view from any thing witnessed in England. It had never been seen before by European eyes; but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.” ~ David Livingstone, Scottish Explorer, 1813-1873

Victoria Falls

CAPE TOWN South Africa

Sheltered beneath massive Table Mountain on a narrow peninsula that curls southward to the sea, the Mother City of Africa is one of the most beautiful destinations on earth. Elegant Cape Town is a feast for the senses. Centuries-old Cape Dutch houses, storied landmarks and enchanted gardens dot the cityscape while cool jazz tunes flow out of vibrant neighborhood shebeens. Among the city’s countless highlights, the colorful Victoria and Alfred Waterfront welcomes visitors with hundreds of inviting boutiques and cafés set amidst workaday harbor life. To the south, the Atlantic seaboard gives way to spectacular coastline, powder-soft beaches, seaside villages and an array of exotic wildlife within easy reach of the city.

A

land of spectacular biological and cultural diversity, the wonders of South Africa exceed the imagination. The great English navigator, Sir Frances Drake, described the country’s southwest shores as the “fairest cape in the whole circumference of the earth.” Poised between soaring mountains and expansive sea vistas, the highlights of cosmopolitan Cape Town span from its unique flat-topped Table Mountain to historic Robben Island to the serene landscapes of the Cape Peninsula coastline. Travel north to Zambia and witness one of the world’s greatest spectacles—the Zambezi River’s majestic Victoria Falls, “The Smoke that Thunders.” In the “Gold City” of Johannesburg, experience the sense of community that unites Soweto and the stirring Apartheid Museum. Along South Africa’s northeast border, world-renowned Kruger National Park showcases abundant bushveld landscapes and exotic wildlife. Thrill to sightings of the “Big Five” animals amid the exclusive environs of the Shishangeni Private Lodge. Indulge your cultural curiosity and ignite your spirit of adventure—come discover the inspiring Treasures of Southern Africa!

Victoria Falls, The Smoke that Thunders

ROBBEN ISLAND Robben Island has come to symbolize the triumph of the human spirit. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage List site in 1999, this remarkable outpost has served as a whaling station, a leper colony, a military base, and most infamously, the political prison that housed Nelson Mandela and other freedom fighters. Today, former captives guide visitors with an insider’s view of Africa’s Alcatraz where, despite inhumane conditions, prisoners were able to organize political debates, educational programs and sporting events, and become the international focus of the fight against apartheid.

Exclusive Highlights •Five-Star luxury accommodations in four diverse locations renowned for every modern comfort and amenity. •A uniquely designed itinerary and exceptional opportunities to experience the breadth of culture, landscape and wildlife of South Africa and Zambia. •Walk in the legendary footsteps of Nelson Mandela with visits to Robben Island—a UNESCO World Heritage List site— and Soweto. •Marvel at the beauty of Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage List site. •A three-day safari at the Shishangeni Private Lodge located adjacent to the biodiverse boundaries of world-famous Kruger National Park. Above: Cape Town Opposite page: Long Street, Cape Town, Protea, national flower of South Africa, Robben Island

Nelson Mandela: From Prisoner to President Nelson Mandela was a successful lawyer when he joined the African National Congress in 1952. A decade later, the ANC was banned and Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. During his 27 years as a political prisoner, he refused to compromise his beliefs to gain freedom and became a potent anti-apartheid symbol. Freed in 1990, Mandela negotiated the end of apartheid, was awarded half of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became the first black president of South Africa. UNESCO Robben Island (1999), Cape Floral Region Protected Areas (2004), and Victoria Falls (1989)—all UNESCO designated World Heritage List sites—are featured in this comprehensive program. These sites are distinguished due to universal scenic, historic, artistic or scientific value.

CAPE PENINSULA The Cape of Good Hope, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, is a captivating place of awe-inspiring scenery, fantastic walks, deserted beaches and rare wildlife. The Cape Floral Cape Peninsula

Kingdom is renowned for an abundance of biodiversity that encompasses the natural wonders of Table Mountain National Park. This area, representing less than 0.5% of Africa, is home to nearly 20% of the continent’s flora. Explore the length of Cape Peninsula and marvel at some of the 2,285 species of plant life—a spectacular display that far exceeds that in the British Isles (1,492) and New Zealand (1,996). At Cape Point, ascend one of the world’s highest sea cliffs by funicular to admire stunning panoramic coastal views. In Simonstown, see over 2,000 protected African penguins at Boulders Beach from boardwalks that wind among their nests.

LIVINGSTONE

Zambia

Named after the famous missionary and explorer, David Livingstone, this former colonial town is the perfect base from which to admire the ancient Zambezi River and its illustrious waterfalls. Its National Museum features a collection of memorabilia from Livingstone’s explorations as well as Tonga crafts and African maps dating back to 1690.

Until the 19th century, the Zambezi River’s great cascade was called Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “the smoke that thunders,” by the region’s Kololo tribe. “Discovered” on November 16, 1855 by Dr. David Livingstone, and renamed for England’s Queen, spectacular Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Marvel at the planet’s largest curtain of water—spanning more than a mile—as it crashes some 328 feet into the raging Batoka Gorge below. Twice the height of Niagara, mighty Victoria Falls casts a veil of spray that can be seen up to 50 miles away!

JOHANNESBURG

South Africa

International adventurers and fortune seekers have been flocking to Johannesburg since the advent of the gold rush more than a century ago. Today, skyscrapers have replaced miners’ shacks in the sophisticated City of Gold. Modern Jo’burg is the country’s economic powerhouse and it showcases vestiges of a prodigious history. The suburb of Westcliff, the peaceful environs of your hotel, is distinguished by romantic Edwardian mansions and the city’s Zoological Gardens.

Zambezi River Cruise

The Safari Experience

In the not-so-distant past, a safari was synonymous with hunters stalking herds of big game that roamed the African plains. Today, the experience has taken on a new meaning as voyagers aim cameras to shoot some of the last great wildlife images on earth. Each day unfolds with new discoveries of nature’s grandeur on the wild continent. Awaken to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee as your expert driver prepares his vehicle for your early morning game drive. As you set off in pursuit of exotic animals and birds in their natural habitat, you’ll see the drama of their day-to-day struggle for survival unfold.

THE BIG FIVE

Afterwards, return to the lodge for a hearty English breakfast. There’s time to share your morning encounters with fellow travelers. Later, enjoy lunch and treat yourself to a dip in the pool. A proper English Tea is served before your afternoon game drive. As the sun completes its sojourn across the sky, return to the lodge for a relaxing evening. After a dinner of delicious Continental and local cuisine, gather around the fireplace to trade tales and tally your Big Five sightings. By day’s end, you’ll have collected many photographs and thrilling memories of your very own safari.

Set out in search of Africa’s legendary “Big Five”—the lion, elephant, rhinoceros, cape buffalo and leopard. The rare beauty and majesty of these breathtaking animals continue to attract travelers to this mesmerizing continent. No one could ever forget the emotions stirred to life while witnessing the countless species that roam free about the environs of Kruger National Park. To see them in the wild is truly a thrilling experience.

YOUR LUXURIOUS FIVE-STAR ACCOMMODATIONS

If you’ve ever mused of seeing a panting pride of lions basking lazily in the sun, a lone cheetah scouting for prey from atop a rock, a herd of graceful impalas bounding across a grassland, or a band of inquisitive baboons, then Shishangeni Private Lodge is a dream come true. Located on a private concession in the southwestern corner of magnificent Kruger National Park, the reserve offers incredible wildlife encounters in the most game-rich area in all of South Africa. During each safari adventure, scan for the famous Big Five and an abundance of bird species within the lodge’s 58 sq. miles (15,000 hectares) of pristine bushveld as knowledgeable, seasoned driver-guides share their profound understanding of the flora and fauna.

SOWETO

South Africa

An acronym for South Western Township, Soweto is a living symbol of the energy and spirit that helped end apartheid. One hundred years after it was founded to house black mine workers away from the center of Johannesburg, Soweto is a study in contrasts. BMW dealerships and tidy row houses sit side by side with squatter camps and tin shacks. Despite its tragic history, Soweto leads a trend-setting cultural scene. Vilakazi Street is famous for its two former residents: Nobel

MOUNT NELSON HOTEL

Cape Town Nestled at the foot of majestic Table Mountain, the award-winning Mount Nelson Hotel offers unparalleled tradition, luxury and service. Rated among “the world’s best hotels” by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine in 2004, the elegant Nellie is set amid nine acres of well-tended gardens. It features a host of amenities including beautifully appointed English-style rooms, heated pools, floodlit tennis courts, guided “garden walks” and popular afternoon tea. For more than a century, this worldclass grande dame has played host to celebrities and statesmen—including Winston Churchill and the Prince of Wales—and continues to welcome international travelers with incomparable style.

ROYAL LIVINGSTONE Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Other important sites include the stirring Apartheid Museum and the Hector Pieterson Memorial, erected in memory of the 1976 student protest that captured the world’s attention.

Mural of Nelson Mandela in Soweto

Livingstone

Located on the banks of the Zambezi River in the heart of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, the sophisticated Royal Livingstone Hotel overlooks the placid river just before it plunges over the mighty Victoria Falls. Inspired by the grand estate homes of a bygone era, the Royal Livingstone features spacious colonial-style accommodations including fresh-cut flowers and crisp linens, private balconies and terraces, the personalized attention of a butler and gracious round-the-clock service. Among an array of pleasures, guests enjoy the hotel’s picturesque sundeck where the enchanted waterfall setting often fills the sky with rainbows.

WESTCLIFF HOTEL

Johannesburg

Cascading from a hillside in cosmopolitan Johannesburg, the award-winning Westcliff is the city's most glamorous retreat. Guests at this glorious gem enjoy understated elegance, a holistic spa, palatial marble baths and individually furnished guest rooms decorated by South Africa's premier designer, Graham Viney. A sprawling pool and terrace overlook the Magaliesberg Mountains and the forested canopy of the northern suburbs.
