Your remodel should not reflect a fad, a movement or your neighbors’ attitudes. It should be all you. You make choices every day that are great clues to your personal style. The clothes you wear. The car you drive. The drink you order. The greeting card you buy. The screen saver on your computer. And a zillion other choices you make during the course of your day‑ to‑ day life.
PE R S O N A L S T Y L E I S A L L A B O U T T H E T H I N G S YO U LOV E To get a great head start on defining your style so that you can ultimately share it with your designer, it really helps to put together a collection of the things that you love. Include everything. Surf the web. Get shots of your favorite kinds of furniture, room settings, paintings and posters. Cut out pictures from magazines—and not just remodeling magazines, but People, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and anything else that defines a style you are drawn to, even if it’s not a shot of an interior. Have a look at artifacts from your travels. A rug, a statue, even a snapshot of a garden, landscape or cityscape can help define your style and could be the spark that creates a living space that is uniquely you.

REMODELING?
CHOOSE WAYPOINT ® AND
WORK WITH A PRO WITH A WAYPOINT® DESIGNER, YOU’LL GET EXACTLY WHAT YOU HAD IN MIND You’ve got a sense of style that is unique to you. You may even have a vision of your new kitchen or bath and the feeling you want to create. But even if you are a can-do person who can make anything happen, remodeling a living space yourself without experienced professional support can be disastrous financially; and worse, it can cause undue stress on you and your family. The following is a list of things to keep in mind as you embark on your remodel journey.
GET THE REMODEL YOU WANT WITHOUT ALL THE DRAMA Unfortunately, in many cases, when it comes to remodeling, “do it yourself” often means do it over. Remember when you tried to color your own hair with that $5 box of name-brand dye and then ended up spending $250 for color correction? Ouch! And you got off easy compared to a remodel debacle. Mistakes on a remodel can escalate into the thousands quickly. Like that outlet behind the dishwasher that was not anticipated and means pulling out the cabinets and getting the electrician back. Or that wall you were going to move until the county inspectors advised you that the wall was load-bearing—after you ordered your cabinets that now won’t fit. You’d do well to call on a Waypoint® designer, who is armed with the resources, products and knowledge you need to help you anticipate all the important details. And you’d be surprised to find out that hiring a designer is quite affordable, especially when you consider that one mid-project mistake can escalate costs beyond your budget.

Crystal Russell, founder and CEO of TVL Creative, speaks to a passion for creating unique spaces and her approach to life and design. How did you get started in the business? It’s been a long road! I went to design school as an undergrad, then received a graduate degree in architecture. From there, I continued pushing forward. I always wanted to be a designer and knew that my love for the industry wouldn’t stop at grad school. Tell us something about yourself most people would be surprised to know. I’m a big introvert! As the CEO and the general face of the company, I often struggle with this. When folks meet me, they are always surprised to hear that I consider myself to be an introvert. I’m great at public speaking, wildly social and chatty at industry events. In face-to-face conversation, I never seem to tire. But, my goodness, those things wear me out! I really have to build my energy to do any of them. My favorite and most productive time is spent in quiet solitude, in my office: cozied up with candles, good music and lots of computer time. What inspired you to start your own firm? I have always been entrepreneurial at heart and interested in starting my own business. But after becoming generally disheartened by the interior design industry, that was the biggest motivation for me to start TVL. As a professional designer, I felt strongly that the industry was too exclusive and elitist to provide meaningful design services to folks of all budgets. My undergrad studies taught me so much about the powerful psychological implications of good design and its impact on people from all walks of life. After that, my experience working in the industry, combined with a strong passion to create a wholly authentic and completely approachable company that serves up amazing design, birthed TVL. How did you select the name TVL? What does it mean to you? TVL stands for “This Visionary Life.” I came up with the name while describing my feelings on being a creative in this world. I was discussing the power of being an artist and someone who can translate concept into physical form. I kept returning to the statement about the power of living “this visionary life,” and it stuck! I shortened it to give the brand legs and add a little mystery. What makes your firm unique? In my opinion, so many things! For one, we offer high-end design solutions but are also completely approachable and
undeniably authentic. We read as a more “alternative” firm when compared to our peers in the industry. We are what some have described as eclectic and youthful; every member of our team is under 40 years old, and we proudly host a collection of funky haircuts, independent personalities, tattoos and fun style. Our rule here is to always be authentic and to never fall short of being truly yourself. We are also unique in our technological capabilities. Because every employee in the company has mastered the art of complex photorealistic digital modeling and rendering, it’s a service we offer all of our customers— which is pretty much unheard of. We offer a truly full-service approach under one umbrella with design and construction services completely in-house. This makes it possible for our clients to move seamlessly from the design and planning stages to the construction phase without ever leaving our company’s hands. What role does social media play in your business? A huge one! We not only use social media religiously to share our own work and invite folks into the world of TVL, but we also use it regularly to follow other designers and stay on top of what’s happening in the world of architecture. How does Waypoint help you achieve your design and remodel goals? We love Waypoint and have been partnering with them since we were founded in 2013. We love the quality of the products and the ease of designing with the product lines. Our customers always love the look and operation of the cabinets, and our installers always comment on the ease of installing Waypoint products as well. We create beautiful and engaging spaces for customers at a fair price point, and that goes a long way to helping make renovation dreams come true. What’s your biggest measure of success? Client satisfaction. We love when, after all of the stress of a renovation, a customer is just totally in love with their finished space. It is so rewarding to watch a customer live and thrive in a space that we have curated for them. Crystal Russell has, in fact, created a company that brings “This Visionary Life” to life. Her team of extraordinarily talented designers creates one-of-a-kind living spaces that homeowners love. In short, her vision allows homeowners to realize theirs!

ASHLEY CHRISTENSEN Lead Designer

Ashley Christensen says yes to a colorful palette, good design and lattes (no sugar necessary—she’s sweet enough). A lifetime of studying architecture and design, mixed with a lifelong love for the details, has made Ashley a tour de force of experiencing and celebrating our built environment. Light and shadow, dramatic pops of color and gorgeous textures contribute to her enjoyment of life. With oodles of experience in historic preservation, Ashley specializes in finding creative ways to harmoniously blend the old with the new. Whether it’s a full home remodel or redesigning a single space, Ashley delights in the challenge of balancing clients’ functional needs with their need for beautiful design.
We have the most phenomenal team of creatives on the planet. Call me biased, but I am so fortunate to have a company built by folks who are all dynamic and powerful in their own ways. Our team operates as a tight-knit family, and that has established a truly genuine brand strategy that is followed at every step of the way. We care so much about the work that we do, the people we serve and the importance of design. — CRYSTAL RUSSELL

From music to design, Rebekah Murphy is all about creating harmony.
A former cellist, Rebekah Murphy went from making music to creating harmonious spaces. Her uncanny ability to guide customers from inspiration to installation is nothing short of extraordinary. Describe a common remodeling challenge and how you overcome it. Remodeling can be challenging because it’s highly emotional and potentially stressful for homeowners. It’s basically like doing surgery on their home. They can’t test drive the results so they have to trust you as a designer. Being honest and upfront—from the beginning—is the best way to engender trust and combat any potential doubts. Managing clients’ remodel expectations lowers stress and lifts their level of satisfaction. Your hashtag is #nothingordinary. How do you achieve this? This is achieved through relationships built on trust. You have to be a patient and sincere listener to discover each customer’s unique snowflake genetic makeup. I really push customers to discover what evokes beauty and love. My goal is to create a space that’s evocative and memorable. Whether it’s a memory from their European anniversary trip or grandma’s tapestry, I find a way to weave it into the fabric of their space—the results are never ordinary!
Kitchen shown in 660 Painted Stone
What details make an exceptional remodeling project? From the beginning, a customer who is committed to the details from top to bottom—not just the bare minimum— hits a home run. I find their innate design pulse, and we explore the possibilities. When the entire plan is designed together, from the cabinets and accessories to the lighting plan and even the grout and window treatments, you get the best results. Waypoint delivers reasonable pricing and a beautiful range of options that help homeowners realize a design as unique as they are. At the end of the day, Rebekah delivers on her passion and promise with extraordinary remodels and happy homeowners—all over St. Louis.

More than just a team, they’re family. That’s the secret behind the success of this family business. Each family member plays an important role in the process, even independent craftsmen who they also call family. At Zelmar, they treat every remodel as if it’s their own home. When designing a new space, how do you begin the process to help your customers articulate their vision? Our process is unique because we put so much time into it. Each family member plays a different role, and we all support one another. To create a personal connection, we start the process with an invitation to our showroom. It’s important to determine a good fit for everyone. A measurement consultation, materials selection and design review follow. The Waypoint website is really helpful, especially things like the Style Quiz, Visualizer and design images. 2020 computer renderings, combined with hundreds of Waypoint product samples, door styles and finishes, allow customers to see a visual representation of their actual kitchen. Kitchen shown in 650 Painted Linen
How do you start the design process to help customers articulate their design goals? We intentionally start the process in the customer’s home to measure and understand their design aesthetic. We use a checklist to determine how they plan to use the new space. We take directive from the customer to drive the process, then edit their thoughts into the space. To ensure the best designs for our clients, everyone in our office sees every design. We bounce ideas off one another and share feedback. We all have different strengths and weaknesses, and we play well together in the sandbox—it really strengthens our designs. How does Waypoint help you achieve your remodel goals? We start almost every design project in Waypoint’s 2020 catalog because it’s easy to navigate, plan, visualize and digest. Waypoint works really well in multiple spaces for budget, style and quality. We recently completed a project in which we used Waypoint in the master bathroom, basement, half bath and mudroom area. The same cabinets translated nicely in multiple spaces and created individual identities for each. Waypoint allowed us to
create unique furniture pieces, like a vanity, entertainment center and wet bar. Because they have a range of offerings, we can accelerate the decisionmaking process and personalize their selections with accessories like molding buildups and legs. Waypoint also offers universal access cabinets, which are, without modification, helpful for Universal Design.
What role does social media play in your business? We do a ton of social media, so it plays a huge role in our business. It really helps to promote our identity for networking and even referrals. Personally, we also use it quite a bit to keep up with product knowledge, inspiration and the latest design trends. In terms of our business, it’s great to have customers follow you and make comments on posts, which generate leads. What’s the greatest achievement or measure of success? Craig: I was really proud to be named one of the 2017 NKBA 30 Under 30 honorees. Scott: Winning Waypoint’s Showcase Your Space contest, not once but twice, was incredible. Winning awards is great but getting positive recognition from customers is even more rewarding. We get a lot of repeat business from word of mouth, which is a huge compliment. This team of talented designers is remodeling New England one award-winning design at a time!

website, which really helps. Seeing photos of their home helps me get a feel for their current style and décor. After that, clients bring me all kinds of things for inspiration—everything from couch pillows to paint chips. I see their current space as a blank slate. I listen to their needs, process everything and translate it into a space with the wow factor.
From online games to real-time spaces.
Your designs have been described as affordable and fashionable; how do you achieve both? We do a lot of new construction design, so the Waypoint 400 series is both affordable and fashionable. I like that you can get the look you want without spending a ton. The monthly Waypoint promotions add value, too. Waypoint’s decorative accessories allow me to be creative using a variety of different moldings, legs, etc., on everything from range hoods to islands to peninsulas. When a budget allows, I love using door styles like the 660 and the 750 because you can achieve the best of both worlds—modern and traditional. I love finishes like Kitchen shown in Painted Pewter Glaze because they 750 Painted Pewter Glaze offer a warmer, more interesting choice than just standard white.
Inspired by the online game Sims, Ashley Guerra’s love for creating virtual spaces became a reality. With a newly minted graphic design degree in hand, EKB Kitchens hired her as designer. Mentored by owners Matt and Leah, Ashley’s career is off to a sensational start— just ask her fans on social media!
When designing a new space, how do you begin the process to help your clients articulate their vision? The first thing I do is send clients to the Waypoint website to take the Style Quiz and browse kitchen images for inspiration. I ask them to send me examples of kitchens they like from the
What’s your greatest measure of success? For me, success is achieved when customers post my remodel projects on social media; that’s very fulfilling. It’s also an ego boost when customers comment on my Facebook or Instagram design posts. I get a lot of referral business from social media. I’ve had people tell me they saw their friend’s new kitchen on Facebook, then call me to design theirs because they liked it so much. For one customer I did three of her bathrooms and for another, two kitchens in one house! All in all, Ashley’s virtual reality lessons turned into a real-life success story.

technical aspects behind my designs. I always design for my clients, not for myself. Because I know exactly what will and won’t work, I am able to successfully manage my client’s remodel expectations. The end result is a solid design. Describe your design process. We have an initial survey/interview process that is rather lengthy because we go through every aspect of the client’s lifestyle. Every nitty-gritty detail, from shopping and entertaining to cooking, will impact their final design. It’s important to accommodate each client differently. I find joy in improving their lifestyle with a personalized Kitchen shown in design. Because many clients want to live in 650 Painted Linen their homes longer, living in place becomes an important consideration. Regardless of the circumstances, I build a strong foundation with a custom layout before adding the decorative pieces like cabinets, colors, details, etc.
Functionality first. Kitchens styled for life. Anna Gibson understands the importance of building a solid foundation— firsthand. Her natural ability for design and architecture, coupled with her pragmatic approach, has proven to be a combination worthy of awards. How did you get started in design? As a child, most of our family field trips were spent on construction sites wearing hard hats. My dad was a big builder in Jerusalem, Israel. He built everything from museums to hotels, and I spent most of my days chasing him around construction sites and trade shows. We never had house chores, so I earned pocket money coloring his blueprints. These experiences sparked my imagination from a very early age. To what do you attribute your success? The experience I gained from my dad gives me a different perspective from other designers—I really understand the
Can you offer any advice for downsizing or designing small spaces? Yes, everything in a small space must multitask—even appliances. To ensure everything has its place, mapping the space is an important part of the planning process. To avoid clutter, I like to conceal as many things as possible with efficient cabinetry and interior organizational products. In the kitchen, I love the Pull Out Double Waste Basket and the Wood Tiered Cutlery Divider is like magic! It’s also the perfect place for makeup in the bathroom. Deep Roll Out Trays are fantastic. To keep counters clutter-free—a Pantry Pull Out with utensil buckets is a must. Biggest compliment you’ve received? I designed a small kitchen for a client, and recently she called to tell me a story about the functionality of the space. The client had three people preparing a big Thanksgiving dinner in her new kitchen, and, instead of chaos, she said everyone moved around so easily—it felt like we were doing a beautiful dance. This made my heart full because if it’s not functional, it’s not worth it. With Anna’s methodical approach to design, it’s no surprise her clients are dancing in their kitchens!

Base Pot and Pan Organizer provides seamless storage for a wide variety of accessories—from pots and pans to mixing bowls and even small appliances. For easy access in the prep zone, I use a lot of Spice Drawer Inserts. For items that don’t fit in drawers, Deep Roll Out Trays work well. A Pull Out Double Trash Can in the cleanup zone is a must. It gives me great pleasure when customers love the beauty and the functionality of their kitchen.
With a plan for success, this designer is in the zone. Christina “Tina” Noel loves it when a plan comes together. After college, design was her destiny, and 35 years later, she’s never looked back. She attributes her award-winning success to an aptitude for technology and soul-to-soul connection with customers. How do you approach kitchen design and organizational challenges? It’s more than just filling a space with cabinets. It’s all about working with a customer, discovering their needs, then making the space work for them. After all of the appliances are in place, I examine the remaining space to create functional work zones. When you first talk to people, they just want a beautiful kitchen. Then you walk them through the different work zones and they actually see the logic behind the functionality of each zone. For example, by the range, in the cooking and prep zone, a
How does Waypoint help you achieve your remodel goals? I love Waypoint! Seriously, over the last 35 years, I’ve worked with so many cabinet companies, and Waypoint Kitchen shown in really is the best. 410 Painted Stone & Their system is Painted Stone Island simple, and it works. When customers shop for cabinets, time is of the essence. Because Waypoint offers five different lines, it’s easy to find cabinets for every customer’s taste and budget, and then deliver pricing quickly. This eliminates their need to shop elsewhere. What’s the biggest compliment you’ve ever received? We hope when the dust settles, the process was simple and fun. If they love their new kitchen, maybe they’ll remodel another space or recommend us to friends. I’ve been in the business for 35 years, so it’s even more fun when a customer comes back for a third time! Then I think, my goodness, how old am I getting? There’s no doubt, when it comes to merging the functionality of work zones with the homeowners’ vision of style, Tina’s award-winning approach works.
AMANDA ZUBKE
GW Smith Lumber Lexington, NC www.gwsmithlumber.com @gwkitchenstudio
Success built from scratch. A self-taught 2020 guru, Amanda Zubke’s passion for design was simmering long before she became the lead designer at GW Smith. Amanda’s collaborative spirit started at home—her home, that is. What began out of necessity to help her husband blossomed into a fruitful career. How did you get started in the design business? I am completely self-taught. My husband is a contractor so when he needed help with design, I stepped in to help. At the time I was home with my kids, so I taught myself 2020. After that, I learned all about the kitchen design business. That whole experience snowballed into a career. To what do you attribute your success? My passion for cooking makes it easy for me to think from a chef’s perspective. I’m a good listener so whether or not the homeowner cooks, I am able to understand their needs and design a functionally beautiful space. I believe everyone deserves a beautiful kitchen. It’s the heart of the home.
Kitchen shown in 540 Painted Pewter Glaze & Painted Boulder
What’s your biggest career success? Recently, I designed 16 new units for a modern luxury apartment complex in downtown Winston-Salem. I designed some of the units for prospective buyers, and, in other units, I collaborated with the new homeowners. I enjoyed the creativity of designing both equally. I see myself as a problem-solver and a resource. I’m here to help my clients, and I truly love it. Honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else. These days, when Amanda needs a hand with social media or taking photos of her work, she enlists a naturally gifted colleague: her daughter, McKenna. For the Zubkes, making remodeling dreams come true continues to be a family affair!

COLOR
S TO R Y ? Color isn’t just a decorative accessory. It’s an emotion. Research has proven that color can change your heart rate, blood pressure and mood. Bright and exciting. Warm and comforting. Dark and dramatic. Light and carefree. All can have a different effect on you. Color is also one of the most powerful triggers of sense memory. A faded yellow can take you back to when you were a child in your grandmother’s kitchen, sipping cocoa in the warmth of the afternoon sun, feeling safe and secure. A blue‑ grey might remind you of a storm and make you feel uneasy. Color speaks to us all in a myriad of abstract, eclectic and subc onscious ways. But color’s language means different things to different people.

G E T AWAY FROM IT ALL I work out of my home, which means I really never leave work. Yoga is my escape from the world. No kids, no work, a peaceful place to just be, where the bright sun floods in from the skylights above, adding a hazy calm of whiteness to the atmosphere. It’s me time—I close my eyes, relax and recharge. The stress of the world feels a million miles away, as I focus on nothing but my breathing. HOME IS W H E R E YO U R HEART IS Every Sunday we would have a family gathering. All the cousins, aunts and uncles would descend on my grandparents’ house for brunch. When it was nice out, we would eat outside on the veranda under the giant tulip tree. It was a grand affair, with lots of laughter, that would last for several hours and was always capped off with the adults sitting around having coffee. I can still remember the smell and look of the sandy blonde hazelnut coffee that my mother would let me taste. That coffee has always symbolized family to me, and it comes back to me every morning as I sit in my creamy hazelnut-colored kitchen and I smell the coffee brewing.

S TO R Y B O O K E N D I N G S Ever since I read Beauty and the Beast by Madame de Villeneuve in grade school, I’ve been in love with all things French. But, more importantly, I’ve been obsessed with turning things that people find ugly or boring into a pièce de résistance! Something highly unusual—a showpiece. My latest project was remodeling the living room in our new home. Yes, I even gave this project a name—“the Beast”—after the hideous fireplace that dominated the room. I surrounded it with beautiful Painted Harbor cabinets of neutral grey with pewter and gold accents and stunning glass windows. I gave the beast a new mantel that matched my beautifully detailed cabinet crown molding, which gave the room a refined, timeless look. Transforming this space into something bold and new helped me to decide on my next project—my wonderful husband. This is going to take some work.

C ATC H I N G LIGHTNING BUGS AND MEMORIES Every summer, my folks would take us on vacation to Maine, to a lake cabin that my aunt Loretta owned. My sister and I each had a dip net that we used to catch everything from minnows to butterflies. In the evenings, as the sun would set and a deliciously deep brown would settle in the woods, the fireflies would come out. We would spend hours chasing them as they glowed against the cinnamon-colored backdrop, depositing them into a large jar with holes poked into the lid. When we were done, the jar lit up the back porch as our parents told stories into the night. Today, as I sit in my beautiful buttery-brown kitchen, I am reminded of those times and I realize what I was really catching in those nets were memories that I would someday share with my own children.

THE QUIETEST PLACE ON EARTH I can remember the time I really experienced absolute silence. I had kayaked out to the middle of the lake as the sun was just starting to come up, and I was bathed in the cocoa warmth of a new day. The water was so still, the air so clean and there wasn’t a sound. Not a bird or a ripple—it was complete silence. I never felt so small and so large at the same time. As that dark brown sky dissolved into a golden orange, I remember wondering if I would ever experience this amazing peace and quiet again. Well, three kids, a dog and a cat later, I can truthfully say the answer is no. But there are days when I wake up early and sit in my kitchen looking at those rich, truffle-colored cabinets as the sun is just starting to rise through the window and casts the faintest amber light across the room. That silence is close—not the same, but perfect in its own unique way.

ESPRESSO IS THE NEW BLACK I’ve always loved the color black. Its rich dark drama feels epic to me. I prefer nighttime to daytime. I prefer my vintage black Asian teapot to the latest porcelain colors. I prefer black cats with coats that set off their green eyes. I can never go wrong wearing my little black dress. Black is so versatile, works with any style, any setting, so it’s no surprise that I chose Espresso doors for my kitchen. Because no matter how much my interests and style may change, black is versatile and will always keep my kitchen feeling luxurious and stylish. So, are there any exceptions to my favorite color black? OK, you got me. I do prefer green tea to black tea…with just a hint of honey.

I was walking the street with my mom and saw a gorgeous, rich orange and brown pleated skirt in a storefront window. My mom explained to me how someone had come up with the idea for that and made it, and I couldn’t help thinking how amazing it was that someone got to do that for a living. Over the years, I’ve seen, designed and worn hundreds of different colors and styles. But that gorgeous, spiced golden-brown color with just the slightest hint of orange will always be my favorite. It reminds me of how lucky I am, every day, to do what I love.

We were going to rent a car and head up the Pacific Coast Highway for the day. When we got to the rental car company, we noticed that they offered exotic cars for rent. I talked Jonathan into splurging for the day and we rented this amazing, dark-cinnamon convertible. It was the most wonderful day and the best car trip I’ve ever taken. I remember thinking that I felt like Cinderella with her prince and her pumpkin had been turned into this wonderful car. Now, when I am in my kitchen and preparing the evening meal, I look at my cinnamon-colored cherry cabinets and I’m transported back to that drive, the Pacific Ocean and that girl named Cinderella.

I love the look and feel of claret-hued cherry so much that I added a deep-merlot colored credenza to our entryway. Everyone comments on what a lasting first impression our entrance area creates. Recently, a good friend brought me another sign to hang in my home. OAK HONEY 310
LIFE CAN BE MAGIC From the time he was an infant, I always told Jimmy that the oak tree in our yard was magical. When he was a toddler, he knew magic was real. But I’ll never forget the first time he looked up at me and responded, “Daddy, that’s silly.” I wasn’t quite ready for that yet—that skepticism we get as we grow older. I told him once more the tree was magic, and he could make a wish to the tree. He hesitantly placed his little hand on the strong oak, and I heard him

Most kitchen or bathroom remodels certainly add to your quality of life. They will also add to the value of your home when it comes time to sell. Getting a high return on your financial investment is important, and realizing your unique style in a remodel will surely pay dividends for a more comfortable and rewarding lifestyle.
NOT HAVING A BUDGET. Have you ever gone to the market and ended up at the checkout and come up short? Frustrating, right? Doing a remodel requires even more planning. The numbers are bigger, and setting a budget from the outset makes all K I TCthe H E Ndifference. NOT KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Translating your dreams into reality can be tough. But with a little bit of homework and a collection of things that inspire you, your Waypoint® dealer/designer can achieve a style that’s all you. Bring them your remodel magazine clippings, snapshots of favorite homes, examples of colors, textures and fabrics that you love. This is how the perfect remodel starts.
NOT CHOOSING YOUR APPLIANCES FIRST. Don’t end up with beautiful cabinetry that won’t accommodate your preferred appliances. It makes sense to choose those appliances first and design your cabinetry accordingly. Yes, there are standard sizes, but a Waypoint® dealer/designer knows that homeowners’ needs are anything but standard. Avoid the aggravation, delays and expense that come with appliances that will not fit the space.
NOT ALLOWING ENOUGH TIME FOR EXCELLENCE. Many designers, installers and contractors are notoriously optimistic about completion dates. Know that your remodel will probably take longer than anyone says it will. Do yourself a huge favor and do not schedule completion up against a holiday or wedding reception. This often ends in tears. Be realistic. Be patient. Allow enough time for remodel excellence. It’ll be fabulous forever.

WINNING DESIGNER > KITCHEN
FA R I S S P I N O S I CRAMPED KITCHEN BE GONE! Faris Spinosi, a designer from TVL Creative, won the fall 2019 “Showcase Your Space” remodel contest for her innovative design that transformed a dysfunctional first floor into a seamless open space for a growing family of four. Converting a cramped space into an active open floor plan was this family’s top priority, which meant walls had to come down. By removing the wall that divided the kitchen and dining room, Faris opened the whole floor plan. She added a central pantry to hide the unsightly ductwork and provide much-needed storage. Serving double duty, the pantry anchors the kitchen island, while creating a visual barrier between the kitchen and homework area. Once she resolved the space and flow challenges, Faris turned to Waypoint® cabinets for a timeless look. Her clients fell in love with floor-to-ceiling 650 Painted Linen cabinetry. An eye-catching backsplash provides an interesting backdrop for the crisp cabinets. Lit by a trio of hanging pendants, the waterfall island offers ample counter space, a sink and room for three to dine. Waypoint’s customization options allowed Faris to create a highly functional kitchen and homework nook for the kids. “Waypoint offered a high-quality, cost-effective cabinet option for this client,” Faris proudly crowed. And, thanks to the customer service team at Waypoint, the design process was seamless and the installation easy. There is no doubt this is a kitchen that will draw a crowd for years to come!

READY FOR RELAXATION! Elena and April’s winning bath remodel almost didn’t happen! When their clients moved into their new home, the list of remodel projects was lengthy. Low on the list of priorities, the master bath remodel was originally scheduled for “down the road.” Their plans changed—the homeowners fell in love with the proposed design and decided to move forward immediately! The challenge this design team faced was not the spacious bathroom, but a serious lack of storage and a cramped shower. Additionally, drowned in builder-grade tile, the sunken tub made the ceiling appear to be low and required a step up to the master bath. Enter, the award-winning Case Design and Remodeling team. Stylish cabinets, under budget—the decision to use Waypoint® cabinets was easy. Their clients love the D14 door style and Stone is a natural fit for the grey and white palette. Another added bonus? Duraform is moisture-resistant—perfect for this steamy space. The new design includes an L-shaped vanity complete with two sinks and a makeup station. With plenty of drawers and cabinets, it’s configured for serious storage space. Crystal lighting fixtures top the mirror-lined walls, expanding the space. Complete with a soaking tub and spacious shower, this spa bath wants for nothing. Ready for relaxation, this functional design is definitely a winner! And, thanks to Waypoint, the award-winning results were delivered with a very short lead time.

CHEERS TO A BOURBON INSPIRED BASEMENT! Gary Hubbard, designer at Kitchen Creations, Inc., created an award-winning “other” design that was inspired by the owner’s appreciation for an amber American spirit—bourbon. Gary successfully transformed an empty basement into an entertaining bar that embodies all the smooth, complex qualities of its inspiration. A Kentucky couple who loves to entertain at home, Gary’s clients decided to turn their unfinished basement into a beautiful bar. To begin the process, he invited them to visit his showroom. Once he understood the couple’s wants and needs—he knew Waypoint cabinets would be the perfect fit. From past experience, he also knew Waypoint provides an excellent quality product with precise finishes and a variety of decorative options. For the wife—it was love at first sight. She was instantly drawn to the smooth finish of Painted Silk—these creamy cabinets were vinyl tile. Displayed on iron-supported shelving, the husband’s Bourbon bottle collection was elevated to art. The design paired traditional cabinetry with a well-worn bourbon barrel sink. The contrast of the combination reflects the couple’s unique style. Gary admits much of his remodel success stems from his relationship with Waypoint. He says, “Any situation that has come up, and there have been some odd ones, Waypoint has—for lack of better words—‘had our backs.’ It sounds like there is more than one winner here. Cheers to winning watering holes! There were many entries, and as always, selecting the top three was nearly impossible. LAUNDRY TRICKS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW
Use dish soap, or chalk, to get out grease stains—just saturate the stain or use your fingers to rub on before washing as usual. Do not let the garment dry until the stain is completely gone.

To dry clothing ASAP, put it in the dryer on the highest setting with a dry bath towel. Remove sweat stains and odors from white T-shirts by rubbing with white vinegar before washing. To remove wrinkles quickly, throw the piece of clothing in the dryer with a towel and a few ice cubes. Ice cubes create steam that will get rid of the wrinkles, and the towel will fluff the clothing item and keep it from sticking to the side of the dryer. Never lose your socks again. Pin a mesh bag to your laundry hamper. As soon as you take off your socks, place them in the bag. Keep the socks in the bag when you wash and dry them.

S H AV I N G : IT ’ S A LOT L E SS I R R I TAT I N G WHEN DONE RIGHT Here are a few tips to make that morning ritual a lot less irritating. First of all, hop in the shower. Hair is weakest when thoroughly soaked and is therefore easier to cut. If there is no time for a shower, then rinse your face with warm water and keep it wet for a couple of minutes. Next, you’ll need a good-quality, nonfoaming shave cream and a shaving brush. Apply the shave cream using the brush in a circular motion. Use a quality razor with a fresh blade (seven shaves or fewer) and rinse the blade frequently. Shave in the direction of your beard and let the razor do the work. Now comes the good part. Rinse with cool water, apply a little witch hazel, pat dry and finish with a highquality aftershave lotion.

A quiet space at the beginning or end of a busy day creates a sense of tranquility. Don’t forget about shoe storage when planning your dream closet!
THIS HIS & HER CLOSET IS PROPERLY DRESSED Master his and her closets have become an essential feature of the master suite. They’ve also been proven to cultivate happier, more dashing couples. A proper his and her closet has plenty of well-planned space for couples to comfortably dress and to hang shorter and longer garments. Drawers and racks should be customized to his and her needs. The closet should include many organizational features, like cabinetry outfitted for specific accessories and even islands to lay out wardrobe details in advance for a quick escape on busy days.

SHINE ‘EM UP RIGHT Shoes are an investment that will last for many years with proper care. Start by brushing off the dust and dirt. Then, with a rag wrapped tightly around your first two fingers, apply the polish in small, tight swirls. By the time you’re through applying wax or polish to the second shoe, the first will be dry and ready to brush. Spray a little water on a second, light application of polish—a spit shine—then buff with a soft cotton cloth.

What a great idea! The same items used to open cabinet doors and drawers can also provide the answer to keeping your necklaces organized and tangle-free. Take the idea one step further, using pulls for scarves and ties. Using knobs and pulls won’t replace a welldesigned tie rack or jewelry box, but they are perfect for staging key elements for getting ready quickly when you’ve got a busy day ahead. With a little creativity, the cure for the common closet is at your fingertips.

THREE TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOUSEPLANTS ALIVE AND THRIVING Plants can breathe new life into a home, and you can change the look of a room by changing out your plants for the season. Here are a few tips on how to keep your houseplants alive year-round: The Right Amount of Water
L I V I N G S PA C E S H O W N I N 61 0 M A P L E AU B U R N G L A Z E
Overwatering is one of the most common reasons a plant doesn’t thrive. To find out if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch into the soil, close to the edge of the pot. If it’s dry, it’s time to water! Proper Drainage
WARM COLORS AND SOFT, COMFORTABLE TEXTURES WILL HELP MAKE THIS THE ROOM YOUR WHOLE FAMILY WANTS TO BE IN. KEEP IT COZY!
Make sure your pots have drainage holes, to help prevent root rot. Another way to help is to put a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the pot, about ½-inch to 1-inch thick, to keep water away from the roots. The Right Lighting Be sure to read the label of the plant when you purchase it to find out the best lighting (and watering) for it. It will usually be either full sun, partial sun or shade.

UPGRADE YOUR PANTRY AND GET ORGANIZED WITH WAYPOINT LIVING SPACES® With your busy life, you really don’t have time to go searching through your pantry for that box of cereal or a particular spice. Just a few organizational solutions will make your pantry efficient and functional. A pantry is the perfect place for a minimalist style. Open shelving makes items easy to find, and slab doors will help provide a clean and tidy look, while concealing any clutter. Floor to ceiling cabinetry ensures that there will be plenty of space for all your goods. Keep your daily items
easy to reach on the lower shelves, and reserve your top cabinets for hiding the contraband candy and cookies. No matter the style of your kitchen, your pantry should be an easy extension. Waypoint® has products to ensure a seamless, streamlined look for your living space that is functional and stylish. A clean, open pantry space with clearly organized and labeled items will keep you efficient and in control, even on your most hectic days.
BEAUTY IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP Real beauty in cabinetry is not only about the way it looks, but also about the way it lasts. Your cabinetry should look and function for many years to come as well as it does the day it’s installed. Waypoint® cabinetry is built to last, and steps are taken throughout the manufacturing process to ensure that it does.
CABINE TRY THAT’S BUILT TO L AST Every Waypoint® cabinet is built with American pride and craftsmanship, using the finest materials available. Cabinet joints are pressure‑fitted, glued, stapled, double-doweled construction. Kiln‑dried face frames made with 3/4‑inch by 1-5/8‑inch solid hardwood will not warp. Half‑inch furniture board corner blocks contribute to the integrity of the cabinets. Waypoint® standard construction includes 1/2‑inch-thick plywood sides with Waypoint® resilient finishing system exteriors. Tops, bottoms and floors are 1/2‑inch-thick furniture board, finished with our natural wood grain resilient finishing system. All construction meets or exceeds the rigorous standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA). We have the KCMA seal to confirm it and a Limited Lifetime Warranty to guarantee it. Count on Waypoint’s 5/8‑inch solid dovetail drawer construction that exceeds all load standards, and choose optional furniture ends to provide a finished look to the visible sides of cabinets.
HIGH - QUALIT Y HINGES AND GLIDES Our 21-inch drawers now come equipped with full-extension glides with CushionClose®. The undermount technology with precision roller carriage leaves drawer sides and dovetails exposed, while allowing access to everything within the drawer, all the way to the back. CushionClose®, for drawers, doors and selected organization products, uses damper technology to reduce slamming and ensure gentle, quiet closing. Our six‑way adjustable hinges have CushionClose® integrated right into the hinge and are factory installed. They open to 105º and have an on/off switch so that the pressure of the lighter doors can easily be adjusted. Waypoint® takes pride in building cabinetry that’s beautiful and durable to meet the rigorous needs of the American family and their way of life. So, when you choose cabinetry, it’s important to choose both strength and beauty. Visit waypointlivingspaces.com to learn more and find a dealer near you.

STYLE FOR ALL OF LIFE’S STAGES STORAGE SOLUTIONS THAT EMBRACE FOREVER When you have a forever home, you know that the accumulation of stuff will escalate through the years. This is a truth of life. The good news is that with a little planning and the help of a good designer, you will never need to rent a storage unit. That’s money better spent on cabinetry. Keep yourself, your family and your things under one roof so you’ll have them when you want them.
NEWLYWEDS Couples starting out find beautiful cabinetry to accommodate entertaining needs. Celebrating your successes with friends and family is an important part of making your new home truly yours.
> Under-cabinet systems hold a surprising amount. Pull open a
drawer only to find a smaller drawer tucked into it. Keep the bottle opener on top. > Built-ins aren’t just for shelves. Cabinets work in all rooms, including
the mudroom, laundry room and large closets. > Pantry door swing-out kits are like having an extra pantry.
BABY ARRIVES Cabinets replace shelves in anticipation of toys and bug collections to come. You’re ready for anything life can throw at you now as you navigate the challenges that come with a growing family.
> Cabinets in the garage will actually save space. You can have
your workshop and, quite possibly, a car in the garage. > G et appliances off the counter with wall top-hinge cabinets
for a sleek, clean look. > A home office doesn’t have to be an extravagance. Adding a
charging drawer by your desk and a wood tiered cutlery divider for pens and notepads will make working from a walk away even easier.
BABY GOES TO COLLEGE A child leaves for college—you gain a home office. Saying goodbye is never easy, but focusing on a new project helps make the transition smoother.
> Revitalize any room with a wine storage unit that can hold towels
or toiletries just as easily as bottles of your favorite merlot. HOME SWEET FOREVER HOME
EMPTY NEST
A forever home is constantly evolving because your life is always changing. It never has to go out of style because your designer can keep you in the loop as new cabinetry styles, finishes and looks become available. A forever home doesn’t stand still long enough to go stale because, with some thoughtful planning, it will always keep up with you and your forever family.
Empty nesters look forward to remodeling rooms to create studios. The pace of life is slower and more relaxed, with time to explore new hobbies and meet long-term goals.
Include these three storage essentials below to maximize efficiency in your kitchen:
PARENTS MOVE IN They find full extension drawers, glide-out under-sink trash and recycling, and blind-corner lazy Susans so much easier to use. Grab bars in the bathroom keep them safe. Cherish the time you get to spend with them now.

FINISHING
TOUCHES In fashion, as in everything, it’s all in the details. It’s the details that complete your look. Think jewelry. It is an intimately personal statement. It’s the measure of your taste. It can mean the difference between dressing well and looking absolutely smashing. Like jewelry, hardware is the personal touch that makes a living space truly yours, reflecting your unique personality and way of life. Waypoint® has a spectrum of hardware styles. Traditional designs with the look of aged metal. Old World pieces expressed as hammered iron and pewter with copper highlights. Brushed elements that relate perfectly to today’s stainless steel finishes. And artisan pieces that can enhance any cabinetry. Selecting hardware is often seen as a remodeler’s most difficult choice. Waypoint’s collection promises to complement your style with style, no matter what it is.

HOW TO
PREPARE
FOR A
REMODEL
YOUR REMODEL IS AN INVESTMENT One of the first and most important things you can do before you begin your remodel is to be sure of what you want to accomplish and what you’re willing to spend to achieve your goal.
W A Y P O I N T L I V I N G S PA C E S . C O M
Beyond improving your quality of life, remodeling increases the value of your home. In the remodeling business, it’s known as the price/value relationship. For example, according to the Remodeling 2019 Cost vs. Value Report,* homeowners in the market for reselling their homes recoup, on average, 62.1% of every dollar they spend on a midrange major kitchen remodel. That’s an excellent return on your investment. Master baths are another great investment when it comes to cost vs. value, with a midrange bathroom remodel, on average, producing a 68.2% return on investment in 2019.
with you to make the most of your budget and create a living space you’ll be proud of. Ironically, not hiring a designer in an effort to save money often ends up costing homeowners more. An expert will help make sure all is done right the first time and avoid costly mistakes.
NOTHING GREAT COMES EASY Remodeling is disruptive under the best of circumstances, so to ease the process, it really helps to be ready. That’s why the first step shouldn’t be about tarps or runners, but about communication. * © 2019 Hanley Wood, LLC. BEFORE
But before you even start calculating your return, you need to take a realistic look at your budget. Discuss what you’re willing to spend with your designer before you start to plan. A Waypoint® authorized designer can work

GET THE FAMILY READY Before anything else, discuss the process with your family. Tell them what’s going to happen and the approximate duration of the project. Tell them to steer clear of work areas, and let them know how to use alternative areas of the home for their day-to-day living needs.
ADVISE THE NEIGHBORS And while communication is important in your home, don’t forget to advise your neighbors of your project. Making neighbors aware goes a long way toward having their support as you upgrade your new living space. Monopolizing all the on‑street parking for months tends to alienate the friendliest of neighbors. Just a little heads‑up about your remodel will go a long way.

CO LO R YOUR WORLD Finding a color palette for your new living space is as easy as opening your eyes. Look around. See colors that appeal to you. Choose only colors you are drawn to. Let the seasonal fall colors inspire you: soft golden orange, deep brown, leaves and sky. Or maybe you’re inspired by colors that are natural but vibrant—like a basket of artichokes at a farmers’ market. Or get inspired by a neutral room setting with spots of color from your magazine. Look everywhere—and if you really get stuck, check your closet. There’s likely a favorite sweater, dress or piece of clothing

PICKING YOUR PAINT COLOR Picking the right paint color for your living space can seem daunting. Here are some guidelines to help you pick the best color for your space and create the feeling you’re looking to achieve. FIND INSPIRATION. Don’t pick your color for the room first. You need to draw inspiration from the pieces that will be in that room, such as a piece of furniture, a rug or a favorite piece of artwork.
ADDING MORE COLOR. Once you have your basic paint picked out, you might decide the room is not colorful enough for you. An easy way to add more color is to play up monochromatic color schemes by adding an accent color that is a cooler or warmer version of the initial color. Using a color wheel will make this much easier. Another technique using a color wheel is picking a complementary color—colors that are across from each other create a very intense and vibrant feeling when used together.
W A Y P O I N T L I V I N G S PA C E S . C O M
DON’T OVERSATURATE. Keep a balance with a neutral base palette and vibrant, colorful accents. Typically, you want to keep your paint mainly neutral and accent with colorful furniture and accessories, or maybe an accent wall. However, if you really want brightly colored walls, make sure the furniture and accessories in the room are neutral colors to balance it out.
USE TESTERS. Paint large swatches of different colors on a wall before making your final decision on color and sheen. Leave them for up to a week so you can experience them at different times of day and with different lighting.

CO LO R & B E AU T Y OF WOOD
The wood for every cabinet door created by Waypoint® is carefully selected. Mother Nature insists on originality, so the characteristics of the wood grain and finish, whether in Cherry, Maple or Oak, will naturally vary slightly from piece to piece. But when it all comes together, homeowners are certain to be satisfied with the look, style and “Wow” of their new living space.
CHERRY Cherry is a close-grained, multicolored hardwood with occasional pin knots and fine grain variations appearing as curls and waves. Streaking, knots and subtle color variations are what give this wood its unique character. Its color typically darkens some over time.
MAPLE Maple is an exceptionally hard, finely grained wood species with a fine, even texture. Many love the darker stains that moderate the color variance and lighter stains that mellow with golden hues over time.
PA I N T E D Long-lasting painted finishes on hardwood frames with furniture board center panels are a strong choice, with superior stability, consistency and coverage.
OAK Oak is a hardwood with a varied and pronounced grain that is enhanced with desired stains and finishes. Its unique striations, natural texture and subtle color variance are what make it so popular.
