Your remodel should not reflect a fad, a movement or your neighbors’ attitudes. It should be all you. You make choices every day that are great clues to your personal style. The clothes you wear. The car you drive. The drink you order. The greeting card you buy. The screen saver on your computer. And a zillion other choices you make during the course of your day‑ to‑ day life.

PE R S O N A L S T Y L E I S A L L A B O U T T H E T H I N G S YO U LOV E To get a great head start on defining your style so that you can ultimately share it with your designer, it really helps to put together a collection of the things that you love. Include everything. Surf the web. Get shots of your favorite kinds of furniture, room settings, paintings and posters. Cut out pictures from magazines—and not just remodeling magazines, but People, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and anything else that defines a style you are drawn to, even if it’s not a shot of an interior. Have a look at artifacts from your travels. A rug, a statue, even a snapshot of a garden, landscape or cityscape can help define your style and could be the spark that creates a living space that is uniquely you.

This is no place for fussiness. Matchy-matchy belongs elsewhere. This style calls for uncomplicated earthenware, simple linen serviettes and silver. A sprig of lavender at each plate adds nonchalant notes of enchantment. For another twist, arrange bunches of handpicked herbs and citrus over a table runner. REMODELING?

CHOOSE WAYPOINT ® AND

WORK WITH A PRO WITH A WAYPOINT® DESIGNER, YOU’LL GET EXACTLY WHAT YOU HAD IN MIND You’ve got a sense of style that is unique to you. You may even have a vision of your new kitchen or bath and the feeling you want to create. But even if you are a can-do person who can make anything happen, remodeling a living space yourself without experienced professional support can be disastrous financially; and worse, it can cause undue stress on you and your family. The following is a list of things to keep in mind as you embark on your remodel journey.

GET THE REMODEL YOU WANT WITHOUT ALL THE DRAMA Unfortunately, in many cases, when it comes to remodeling, “do it yourself” often means do it over. Remember when you tried to color your own hair with that $5 box of name-brand dye and then ended up spending $250 for color correction? Ouch! And you got off easy compared to a remodel debacle. Mistakes on a remodel can escalate into the thousands quickly. Like that outlet behind the dishwasher that was not anticipated and means pulling out the cabinets and getting the electrician back. Or that wall you were going to move until the county inspectors advised you that the wall was load-bearing—after you ordered your cabinets that now won’t fit. You’d do well to call on a Waypoint® designer, who is armed with the resources, products and knowledge you need to help you anticipate all the important details. And you’d be surprised to find out that hiring a designer is quite affordable, especially when you consider that one mid-project mistake can escalate costs beyond your budget.

From computers to cabinets, this family means business. Why did you select Waypoint to be your sole cabinet vendor? The Partner Team, job site delivery, 2020 and excellent marketing materials like the magazine make the company, as a whole, a good fit. We use the Style Quiz to get customers pointed in the right direction. Then, Waypoint makes it so easy for us to show customers a wide variety of options. Waypoint is the perfect fit for my business!

As the “B” in A&B Cabinets, Bo Hutchison was destined to play a role in his family’s business. And so it was. 18 years ago, with a newly minted degree in business and computer information systems, Bo purchased his father’s cabinet business. Armed with cuttingedge computer skills and a fresh perspective, his unbridled passion took the business to a whole new level. Tell us something that your customers would be surprised to know about you. My path to becoming a designer was paved by exploring hobbies but none of them gave me the same satisfaction as design. I’ve tried everything, from playing guitar to woodworking and even kayaking, and I still enjoy designing the most. Fortunately, these activities allowed me to broaden my creative horizons—adding a fresh perspective to my designs.

Kitchen shown in 660 Painted Linen & Painted Stone

What advice do you have for those considering a remodel? Trust a professional. I see so many people who get pigeonholed by the footprint of their kitchen and it doesn’t have to be that way. When their kitchen was designed, it was used differently. Times change and so should the space. Each customer is different so I show them four or five different design options so they can determine which is best for them.

For you, what’s the biggest compliment or measure of success? Happy customers who refer their friends are a compliment, but when customers refer their family members, you know they really trust us. I’ve done remodels for three different generations in one family—grandparents, parents and their kids. This company is built on longstanding relationships. Family values and a passion for remodeling are the key ingredients in this family’s recipe for success.

Remodeling vision that’s nothing short of magic. I always order the Waypoint consideration basket, which includes the Waypoint magazine, and everyone loves the inspiration it provides! I can’t tell you how many times people call to thank me for sending it. After a project is finished, as a thank you, we send every customer a Waypoint celebration kit. Has the role of the kitchen changed since you started designing? Oh, yes! I was just looking at remodel pictures from 10 years ago and they look ancient! We’ve raised the bar for the kitchen and the styles have really changed. Today’s kitchen is the heart of the home so, the style needs to reflect that level of comfort.

With a reputation as an artful designer, Lorraine Beggs’s ability to transform a homeowner’s vision into reality is truly nothing short of magic. But, it hasn’t always been that way. When her brother opened Kitchen shown in Concepts The Cabinet Shop in 2003 604 Painted Harbor and enlisted her help, Lorraine was testing hearing aids for a living. Eager to help, she embraced the challenge with the same passion with which she now designs. Self-taught, Which of the current trends do you she admits design has become her life. envision standing the test of time? When designing a new space, how do you begin the design process? I design exclusively for my clients and everyone is different. Their function influences my design. You have to get creative because a fair number of people have a vision, but many do not. In our initial meeting, we create a remodel wish list. For visual reference, we have a catalog of our remodel photos.

White and grey shaker cabinets are definitely here to stay. Adding lighter wood finishes and contrasting cabinets, like Maple Espresso, offers a nice contrast to light, painted cabinets. Islands give people a place to gather, dine and provide creative storage, so they aren’t going anywhere either. It comes as no surprise that Lorraine receives rave reviews from clients. FRANK CANOVA

Diablo Valley Cabinetry San Ramon, CA www.diablovalleycabinetry.com @diablovallecabinet

Engineering lasting style. How has the role of the kitchen changed since you’ve been in the business? It’s a whole new world. Traditional kitchens are gone. The kitchen has moved beyond a place for cooking and storage. The walls have come down creating much more space and it’s become the heart of the home. I have two girls, and the majority of our family time is spent in the kitchen. Whether it’s doing homework, baking cookies, or entertaining friends, we all congregate in the kitchen!

In 2003, Frank Canova brought his technology and engineering expertise to the family business his father founded 21 years prior, and he’s never looked back. And, he’s even learned a little woodworking along the way. As the president of Diablo Valley Cabinetry, Frank’s greatest satisfaction comes from creating something real that families can enjoy for many years to come.

Kitchen shown in 660 Cherry Slate

Tell us something about yourself that your customers would be surprised to know. Surprisingly, my background has nothing to do with woodworking, cabinetry or construction. My wife’s father had a really nice woodshop, so I started doing woodworking with him. I inherited his tools, and I’ve just tinkered with them over the years. My woodworking experience has helped me understand what our customers want and the challenges they face. With this experience, my designs have moved well beyond paper. I have a new appreciation for the time involved in installation. My perspective really sets everyone up for success.

For you, what’s the biggest compliment or measure of success? When a remodeling project is over, I really enjoy hearing the homeowners gush. It’s incredibly rewarding to know they are satisfied. That’s the end product for me. The remodeling business demands that we connect with our customers in a very real way. I get a big charge out of knowing their family will gather there for the next 15-20 years and I feel proud knowing the results are lasting. On top of that, I see our whole team is proud. It’s a great feeling!

What current design trends do you see standing the test of time? A simple look is a lasting look. Merging traditional and modern styles, I often use a 410 (Shaker) door to create a transitional look. It’s lasting because, as the years go by, it’s flexible. If you have a simple palette, it won’t look dated in five to 10 years. This allows the homeowner’s personal style to evolve. It’s more dynamic and they’re not locked in to a short-lived look that can only be changed by remodeling the whole kitchen. Frank’s aspirational goals ensure his lasting career.

KRISTEN LISENBY

Complete Kitchen and Bath Lakeland, FL www.ckblakeland.com @completekandb

From Trading Spaces to Waypoint Living Spaces. Kristen Lisenby has always been interested in art, but her interest in interior design was sparked by watching the TV show “Trading Spaces.” She earned her bachelor’s degree in interior design from the College of Fine and Applied Arts at Appalachian State University and she’s been doing residential design ever since.

Kitchen shown in 610 Painted Linen

Tell us something about yourself that your clients might be surprised to learn. I designed a kitchen for the TV show “Kitchen Crashers: Worst Kitchen in America.” They were looking for a design to improve the “Ugliest Kitchen in America” and selected my design. The kitchen project was a huge endeavor because everything that would normally take a month to accomplish had to be done in three days! We worked really long hours, but it was an amazing experience and the results were absolutely incredible.

Do you think the role of the kitchen has changed since you started designing? The kitchen has always been the heart of the home; that will never change. I believe designs should be classic and flexible, so they stand the test of time. Many people are moving away from formal dining rooms, so I see a lot more seating in the kitchen. This encourages families to gather in the kitchen. And, in today’s environment, kitchens all over America have turned into home offices. Whether it’s on TV or in real life, Kristen never fails to deliver transformational designs that her clients will enjoy for years to come.

JUSTIN FARRINGTON

Linden Kitchen & Bath Linden, MI www.lindenkitchenandbath.com @lindenkitchenandbath

What makes your firm unique? Linden Kitchen & Bath is a third generation, family owned company. Because we’re a locally owned, small-town business serving the community, personalized service is essential. Our showroom is specifically designed to educate and inspire the customer. During our initial consultation, I ask a lot of questions to generate ideas and excitement. I rely heavily on visual inspiration like Waypoint’s magazine and Pinterest to help me envision their dream space.

Justin Farrington was born to remodel. From an early age, Justin’s parents knew he was incredibly talented. As a fifth grader, they gave him his first drafting board and later his first remodeling job—the family kitchen! Here’s what Justin had to say about it. How did you get started in the design business? I’ve always loved art. In fifth grade, my parents bought me a drafting board and I have been drawing homes ever since. In the early days, inspirational magazines influenced my creativity, but my parents made the biggest impact. In fact, one of my first remodel jobs was my parents’ kitchen. I’ve been designing for Linden Kitchen & Bath for seven years and designing for 20 years.

Kitchen shown in 750 Painted Linen

For what reason did you select Waypoint as a vendor? In 2000, I started working with American Woodmark Cabinetry (Waypoint’s parent brand) so, I was extremely familiar with the quality of Waypoint cabinets. Seven years ago, when I joined Linden, there was a void in our product line and Waypoint wasn’t one of our vendors. I knew our clients would appreciate the high-quality construction, ease of design and great pricing. I was right!

How has the kitchen changed since you started your design career? I’ve been designing since 2000, so the role of a kitchen has definitely changed. With the open concept design becoming popular early in my career, the kitchen has become the focal point of the home. This meant designs really had to maximize the space. I use a lot of Deep Furniture Drawers and internal cabinet organizers for storage. Because everyone gathers in the kitchen, it makes a real statement about the homeowners’ style. These days, it’s no wonder Justin’s phone rings off the hook. This small-town designer has 20 years of experience under his belt and big ideas about designing dream spaces.

She can’t visit a home without rearranging it in her head to improve the functionality. But, an interior designer, she’s not. Enter partner, Tiffany McLean. A classically trained interior designer and color expert, Tiffany McLean, of Broxen Homes, complements Ann perfectly. Together they share a passion for Waypoint cabinets and highly functional designs—mission accomplished. When designing a new space, how do you begin the process to help your clients articulate their vision? Ann: We always start with an onsite visit. I ask a lot of tough questions about a customer’s likes and dislikes because I am all about the functionality of the space. I want to understand exactly how they plan to use their space, so it’s utilized perfectly.

Other than the kitchen, how do you use Waypoint cabinets to improve other living spaces? Tiffany: I love using cabinets all over the home! I use them to build vanities, entertainment centers, mudrooms and exposed closets. Kitchens are our forte, but we can help design with any room! Other than the kitchen, mudrooms are my favorite place to use cabinets because I get to explore so many different storage options. I design a ton of lockers, bench seats with drawers, banquettes—there’s so much functional storage to be utilized in a mudroom! Do you think the role of the kitchen has changed since you started designing? Ann: Yes, the kitchen has become so much more than a kitchen. Because we are tearing down the walls between rooms, the kitchen takes on a great room effect. The larger, open space plays so many different roles and the dining table has become the meeting place. Tiffany: I agree, in my kitchen, I stand in the same place to prep my food and entertain. Today’s kitchen has become the new living room. Entertaining has become a big part of my kitchen designs. Large islands provide the perfect place for dining and gathering and provide tons of storage. For these two Californians, experience backed with enthusiasm makes them a powerful team!

COLOR

S TO R Y ? Color isn’t just a decorative accessory. It’s an emotion. Research has proven that color can change your heart rate, blood pressure and mood. Bright and exciting. Warm and comforting. Dark and dramatic. Light and carefree. All can have a different effect on you. Color is also one of the most powerful triggers of sense memory. A faded yellow can take you back to when you were a child in your grandmother’s kitchen, sipping cocoa in the warmth of the afternoon sun, feeling safe and secure. A blue‑ grey might remind you of a storm and make you feel uneasy. Color speaks to us all in a myriad of abstract, eclectic and subc onscious ways. But color’s language means different things to different people.

B E AU T I F U L M E M O R I E S We spent our honeymoon on Santorini, surrounded by whitewashed buildings with blue roofs and shutters. It was the most beautiful place I had ever seen—the clean, crisp white lines with the accents of azure. When it was time to head home, we promised ourselves that someday we would return. Twenty years and two kids later, we’ve yet to make it back. But as we sit in our kitchen, sipping an espresso, surrounded by my white cabinets with touches of blue-grey, that Greek island doesn’t feel very far away.

G E T AWAY FROM IT ALL I work out of my home, which means I really never leave work. Yoga is my escape from the world. No kids, no work, a peaceful place to just be, where the bright sun floods in from the skylights above, adding a hazy calm of whiteness to the atmosphere. It’s me time—I close my eyes, relax and recharge. The stress of the world feels a million miles away, as I focus on nothing but my breathing. It was this feeling that I wanted to capture when remodeling my home office—a soft, linen-white space with a touch of grey to accent the clean lines. Now, I don’t even have to leave the house to get away from it all. L I V I N G S PA C E S H O W N I N 750 PA I N T E D P E W T E R G L A Z E

But standing at the counter with my little girl, both of us covered in flour, laughing hysterically, kneading our fingers into that warm, light cream-colored dough, I finally saw the appeal of baking. It wasn’t in the end result; it was in the memories you make along the way. And whenever I see that silky vanilla color, I always hear the sounds of my daughter’s laughter.

MAGIC MORNINGS I N PA R I S I spent my junior year of college in Paris. Waking up to a hazy view of cream-colored stone and the city sprawling around me, I felt like I was right where I was meant to be. That year abroad taught me so much more than what filled my notebooks in class. It awakened my sense of adventure, taught me independence, and inspired my passion for art and design. Almost 10 years later, I start my mornings surrounded by the same dreamy color and a print of the Eiffel Tower to bring me back to the time when I found my true self.

Design Tip > To create a vintage feel, use old-world, patina hardware. The look of aged bronze will add warmth and character to your living space.

INSPIRED BY THE SEA Growing up by the ocean was something I took for granted. The rhythmic sound of the waves, the grey speckled sand under my bare feet and the mists that rolled over the beach in the morning were details I didn't take in when I was young. Leaving my mom to her coffee, my dad and I would head to the beach every morning of the summer. Building sandcastles was our favorite pasttime. We'd spend hours constructing solid, grey fortresses that I imagined would be inhabited by the little crabs that scuttled from one tide pool to the next. Though work and family have brought me far from the coast now, when I'm pouring my own coffee each morning, my kitchen reminds of that pale grey sand and the childhood I'm so grateful for now.

It was in the barn on his parents’ property, a place we would always go to play. That warm, medium-grey-colored barn always seemed to me to hold secrets and magic, and I was right. With that magical first kiss, I knew I was going to marry Tommy. Our home today reflects the things we grew up with—light, nature and the beautiful warm stone color of that barn. LIFE IS A BEACH—A GOLDEN M A P L E - C O LO R E D S A N DY O N E Every year we take a weeklong vacation to the beach. All of my brothers and sisters bring their families, and mom and dad get to have the whole family together again. It’s not a fancy resort that we go to, it’s rather rustic and dated, but it’s like family—it just feels right and there is no place we’d rather be. Of course the kids are all up at the crack of dawn, and as the rye‑colored sun rises in the sky, we pack the caravan and start our migration to the beach. The week flies by, and we always look forward to next year when we will do it all again. As I prepare for my day before the kids wake up, I look at my bathroom and the rustic maple and rye cabinets, and they remind me of those weeks at the beach and get me set for another beautiful day!

SET TING SAIL When I was a kid, my dream was to sail around the world. The feel of that smooth wooden deck under my bare feet, the breeze skimming across the open expanse of the ocean—it was freedom. The boat was my home away from home and I loved the way the honey brown wood, worn by salt and wind, contrasted with the steely blue of the waves. I have to admit that I never made that voyage all the way around the globe. My job doesn't leave much time for sailing anymore, but it has given me the opportunity to live where I can look out my window and see the marina where my boat, Freedom II, is docked. And when I reach for cabinets that are in that same light brown color, I can almost taste the salty, ocean air.

M R. F U Z Z PAW S It was hard for my little girl to make friends when the nearest house was 10 miles away. Before she started school, Patty’s best friend was her bear, Mr. Fuzz Paws. She took him everywhere. They would spend all day on adventures, and his rich, comforting brown fur would inevitably get dirty along the way, so I would have to wash him once a week. Patty would sit making faces at him as he tumbled around in the washing machine. Sometimes, from the W A Y P O I N T L I V I N G S PA C E S . C O M

A N I G H T AT T H E M O V I E S There was something magical about movie nights, once the squabble over who got to pick from our ever-growing collection of VHS tapes was decided. My dad would bring the popcorn in and we'd all settle in on our plush, brown couch to watch 'happily ever after' play out on the screen. That couch might have had more than its fair share of popcorn kernels lost between the cushions, but it was the backdrop for hours of quality time with my family. Now, we've grown up and scattered across the country to pursue careers and start our own families. When it came to designing the entertainment center in my living room, it was easy to choose the same cozy, timeless brown as the couch I grew up with. Every time I see it, I’m comforted by the warm memories of family time and how much I look forward to Friday nights: the nights I sit down with my own kids to watch a new adventure unfold.

The tradition started when we were too little to help my dad as he scrambled eggs, buttered toast and poured orange juice. My brother and I would still proudly carry it to her on a beautiful tray made of the prettiest auburn colored wood. The hardest part was not letting the tray tilt and spill. Now, my husband and I host my parents for brunch as often as we can, and I'm careful not to spill a drop of wine as I carry glasses from the beautiful auburn glazed wine bar. THE QUIETEST PLACE ON EARTH I can remember the time I really experienced absolute silence. I had kayaked out to the middle of the lake as the sun was just starting to come up, and I was bathed in the cocoa warmth of a new day. The water was so still, the air so clean and there wasn’t a sound. Not a bird or a ripple—it was complete silence. I never felt so small and so large at the same time. As that dark brown sky dissolved into a golden orange, I remember wondering if I would ever experience this amazing peace and quiet again. Well, three kids, a dog and a cat later, I can truthfully say the answer is no. But there are days when I wake up early and sit in my kitchen looking at those rich, truffle-colored cabinets as the sun is just starting to rise through the window and casts the faintest amber light across the room. That silence is close—not the same, but perfect in its own unique way.

Seeing Rudy hunched at the back of his kennel at the shelter changed everything. From the minute we brought him home, he brought joy back into my life. To quell his relentless energy, we started hiking the nearby trails. I loved to catch sight of his deep brown coat with its rich grey sheen as he weaved among fallen tree branches and scrambled up the steely grey rocks. I followed, at first stopping often to catch my breath but eventually striding confidently behind him. Now, whenever I reach for a mug on a chilly day, my kitchen reminds me of his glossy coat as he leads the way. And as to who rescued who? That's a question I'm not even sure I know the answer to. As I work to create a space with unique style that captures my client’s distinct personality, I often find myself framing that portrait in rich, dark chocolate.

I ’ D S P E N D A L L N I N E L I V E S W I T H YO U I was always a dog person until I met my future husband, Frank, who owned a cat named Grits. It was almost like the more I didn’t want to like Grits, the more she forced her way into my heart. I loved her deep, dark slate color that had just a note of red, and I knew she had won my heart when I didn’t mind that those dark grey hairs showed up on all of my sweaters. When we were looking for new cabinets, I saw this Cherry Slate finish that matched her beautiful graphite coat and I knew they would capture the spirit of our home—a home where Grits is the queen and we are lucky enough to share it with her.

Most kitchen or bathroom remodels certainly add to your quality of life. They will also add to the value of your home when it comes time to sell. Getting a high return on your financial investment is important, and realizing your unique style in a remodel will surely pay dividends for a more comfortable and rewarding lifestyle.

NOT HAVING A BUDGET. Have you ever gone to the market and ended up at the checkout and come up short? Frustrating, right? Doing a remodel requires even more planning. The numbers are bigger, and setting a budget from the outset makes all K I TCthe H E Ndifference. NOT KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Translating your dreams into reality can be tough. But with a little bit of homework and a collection of things that inspire you, your Waypoint® dealer/designer can achieve a style that’s all you. Bring them your remodel magazine clippings, snapshots of favorite homes, examples of colors, textures and fabrics that you love. This is how the perfect remodel starts.

NOT CHOOSING YOUR APPLIANCES FIRST. Don’t end up with beautiful cabinetry that won’t accommodate your preferred appliances. It makes sense to choose those appliances first and design your cabinetry accordingly. Yes, there are standard sizes, but a Waypoint® dealer/designer knows that homeowners’ needs are anything but standard. Avoid the aggravation, delays and expense that come with appliances that will not fit the space.

NOT ALLOWING ENOUGH TIME FOR EXCELLENCE. Many designers, installers and contractors are notoriously optimistic about completion dates. Know that your remodel will probably take longer than anyone says it will. Do yourself a huge favor and do not schedule completion up against a holiday or wedding reception. This often ends in tears. Be realistic. Be patient. Allow enough time for remodel excellence. It’ll be fabulous forever.

family of four. Converting a cramped space into an active open floor plan was this family’s top priority, which meant walls had to come down. By removing the wall that divided the kitchen and dining room, Faris opened the whole floor plan. She added a central pantry to hide the unsightly ductwork and provide much-needed storage. Serving double duty, the pantry anchors the kitchen island, while creating a visual barrier between the kitchen and homework area. Once she resolved the space and flow challenges, Faris turned to Waypoint® cabinets for a timeless look. Her clients fell in love with floor-to-ceiling 650 Painted Linen cabinetry. An eye-catching backsplash provides an interesting backdrop for the crisp cabinets. Lit by a trio of hanging pendants, the waterfall island offers ample counter space, a sink and room for three to dine. Waypoint’s customization options allowed Faris to create a highly functional kitchen and homework nook for the kids. “Waypoint offered a high-quality, costeffective cabinet option for this client,” Faris proudly crowed. READY FOR RELAXATION! Elena and April’s winning bath remodel almost didn’t happen! When their clients moved into their new home, the list of remodel projects was lengthy. Low on the list of priorities, the master bath remodel was originally scheduled for “down the road.” Their plans changed—the homeowners fell in love with the proposed design and decided to move forward immediately! The challenge this design team faced was not the spacious bathroom, but a serious lack of storage and a cramped shower. Additionally, drowned in builder-grade tile, the sunken tub made the ceiling appear to be low and required a step up to the master bath. Enter, the award-winning Case Design and Remodeling team. Stylish cabinets, under budget—the decision to use Waypoint® cabinets was easy. Their clients love the door style and Stone is a natural fit for the grey and white palette. Another added bonus? Duraform is moisture-resistant—perfect for this steamy space. The new design includes an L-shaped vanity complete with two sinks and a makeup station. With plenty of drawers and cabinets, it’s configured for serious storage space. Crystal lighting fixtures top the mirror-lined walls, expanding the space. Complete with a soaking tub and spacious shower, this spa bath wants for nothing. Ready for relaxation, this functional design is definitely a winner! And, thanks to Waypoint, the award-winning results were delivered with a very short lead time.

CHEERS TO A BOURBON INSPIRED BASEMENT! Gary Hubbard, designer at Kitchen Creations, Inc., created an award-winning “other” design that was inspired by the owner’s appreciation for an amber American spirit—bourbon. Gary successfully transformed an empty basement into an entertaining bar that embodies all the smooth, complex qualities of its inspiration. A Kentucky couple who loves to entertain at home, Gary’s clients decided to turn their unfinished basement into a beautiful bar. To begin the process, he invited them to visit his showroom. Once he understood the couple’s wants and needs—he knew Waypoint cabinets would be the perfect fit. From past experience, he also knew Waypoint provides an excellent quality product with precise finishes and a variety of decorative options. For the wife—it was love at first sight. She was instantly drawn to the smooth finish of Painted Silk—these creamy cabinets were vinyl tile. Displayed on iron-supported shelving, the husband’s Bourbon bottle collection was elevated to art. The design paired traditional cabinetry with a well-worn bourbon barrel sink. The contrast of the combination reflects the couple’s unique style. Gary admits much of his remodel success stems from his relationship with Waypoint. He says, “Any situation that has come up, and there have been some odd ones, Waypoint has—for lack of better words—‘had our backs.’ It sounds like there is more than one winner here. Cheers to winning watering holes! There were many entries, and as always, selecting the top three was nearly impossible. LAUNDRY TRICKS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

Use dish soap, or chalk, to get out grease stains—just saturate the stain or use your fingers to rub on before washing as usual. Do not let the garment dry until the stain is completely gone.

To dry clothing ASAP, put it in the dryer on the highest setting with a dry bath towel. Remove sweat stains and odors from white T-shirts by rubbing with white vinegar before washing. To remove wrinkles quickly, throw the piece of clothing in the dryer with a towel and a few ice cubes. Ice cubes create steam that will get rid of the wrinkles, and the towel will fluff the clothing item and keep it from sticking to the side of the dryer. Never lose your socks again. Pin a mesh bag to your laundry hamper. As soon as you take off your socks, place them in the bag. Keep the socks in the bag when you wash and dry them.

THREE TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOUSEPLANTS ALIVE AND THRIVING Plants can breathe new life into a home, and you can change the look of a room by changing out your plants for the season. Here are a few tips on how to keep your houseplants alive year-round: The Right Amount of Water

L I V I N G S PA C E S H O W N I N 61 0 M A P L E AU B U R N G L A Z E

Overwatering is one of the most common reasons a plant doesn’t thrive. To find out if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch into the soil, close to the edge of the pot. If it’s dry, it’s time to water! Proper Drainage

WARM COLORS AND SOFT, COMFORTABLE TEXTURES WILL HELP MAKE THIS THE ROOM YOUR WHOLE FAMILY WANTS TO BE IN. KEEP IT COZY!

Make sure your pots have drainage holes, to help prevent root rot. Another way to help is to put a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the pot, about ½-inch to 1-inch thick, to keep water away from the roots. The Right Lighting Be sure to read the label of the plant when you purchase it to find out the best lighting (and watering) for it. It will usually be either full sun, partial sun or shade.

Waypoint® standard construction includes 1/2‑inch-thick plywood sides with Waypoint® resilient finishing system exteriors. Tops, bottoms and floors are 1/2‑inch-thick furniture board, finished with our natural wood grain resilient finishing system.

Waypoint® takes pride in building cabinetry that’s beautiful and durable to meet the rigorous needs of the American family and their way of life. So, when you choose cabinetry, it’s important to choose both strength and beauty.

All construction meets or exceeds the rigorous standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA). We have the KCMA seal to confirm it and a Limited Lifetime Warranty to guarantee it. Count on Waypoint’s 5/8‑inch solid dovetail drawer construction that exceeds all load standards, and choose optional furniture ends to provide a finished look to the visible sides of cabinets.

FAMILY IS FOREVER, AND SO IS THE L ATEST TREND IN HOMES The forever home comes out of a longing for something real and permanent, vying with the starter home and even the smart home for most desired. This is the home you love so much that you want to live there forever. You want to raise your children there and see them off to college. And this is where you will eventually want to welcome your grandchildren for visits. This is where the whole family will gather for Thanksgiving. The forever home nourishes the family through all stages of life—in style, functionality and adaptability. ST YLE THAT WITHSTANDS THE TEST OF TIME Just because you were smart enough to realize that your taste and style will change over time and that you’ll want to change your living space doesn’t mean you have to be Mr. Vanilla. You’ll be here long enough to create many looks as your design sensibilities grow—not to mention the size of your family. Choose the cabinet that most reflects your style in a finish that won’t flinch from the demands of your evolving life. These are the bones upon which you’ll create many styles and looks over time. Life in your forever home will always be changing in new and wonderful ways. How else could it keep up with the needs of a growing family and your evolving style? BASE PULL OUT UTENSIL BIN

STYLE FOR ALL OF LIFE’S STAGES STORAGE SOLUTIONS THAT EMBRACE FOREVER When you have a forever home, you know that the accumulation of stuff will escalate through the years. This is a truth of life. The good news is that with a little planning and the help of a good designer, you will never need to rent a storage unit. That’s money better spent on cabinetry. Keep yourself, your family and your things under one roof so you’ll have them when you want them.

NEWLYWEDS Couples starting out find beautiful cabinetry to accommodate entertaining needs. Celebrating your successes with friends and family is an important part of making your new home truly yours.

> Under-cabinet systems hold a surprising amount. Pull open a

drawer only to find a smaller drawer tucked into it. Keep the bottle opener on top. > Built-ins aren’t just for shelves. Cabinets work in all rooms, including

the mudroom, laundry room and large closets. > Pantry door swing-out kits are like having an extra pantry.

BABY ARRIVES Cabinets replace shelves in anticipation of toys and bug collections to come. You’re ready for anything life can throw at you now as you navigate the challenges that come with a growing family.

> Cabinets in the garage will actually save space. You can have

your workshop and, quite possibly, a car in the garage. > G et appliances off the counter with wall top-hinge cabinets

for a sleek, clean look. > A home office doesn’t have to be an extravagance. Adding a

charging drawer by your desk and a wood tiered cutlery divider for pens and notepads will make working from a walk away even easier.

BABY GOES TO COLLEGE A child leaves for college—you gain a home office. Saying goodbye is never easy, but focusing on a new project helps make the transition smoother.

> Revitalize any room with a wine storage unit that can hold towels

or toiletries just as easily as bottles of your favorite merlot. HOME SWEET FOREVER HOME

EMPTY NEST

A forever home is constantly evolving because your life is always changing. It never has to go out of style because your designer can keep you in the loop as new cabinetry styles, finishes and looks become available. A forever home doesn’t stand still long enough to go stale because, with some thoughtful planning, it will always keep up with you and your forever family.

Empty nesters look forward to remodeling rooms to create studios. The pace of life is slower and more relaxed, with time to explore new hobbies and meet long-term goals.

Include these three storage essentials below to maximize efficiency in your kitchen:

PARENTS MOVE IN They find full extension drawers, glide-out under-sink trash and recycling, and blind-corner lazy Susans so much easier to use. Grab bars in the bathroom keep them safe. Cherish the time you get to spend with them now.

Time to turn that home office into a playroom. Your grandchildren bring such boundless energy and joy to your home every time they arrive. Join in their games and enjoy watching them grow.

It can mean the difference between dressing well and looking absolutely smashing. Like jewelry, hardware is the personal touch that makes a living space truly yours, reflecting your unique personality and way of life. Waypoint® has a spectrum of hardware styles. Traditional designs with the look of aged metal. Old World pieces expressed as hammered iron and pewter with copper highlights. HOW TO

PREPARE

FOR A

REMODEL

YOUR REMODEL IS AN INVESTMENT One of the first and most important things you can do before you begin your remodel is to be sure of what you want to accomplish and what you’re willing to spend to achieve your goal.

W A Y P O I N T L I V I N G S PA C E S . C O M

Beyond improving your quality of life, remodeling increases the value of your home. In the remodeling business, it’s known as the price/value relationship. For example, according to the Remodeling 2020 Cost vs. Value Report,* homeowners in the market for reselling their homes recoup, on average, 58.6% of every dollar they spend on a midrange major kitchen remodel. That’s an excellent return on your investment. Master baths are another great investment when it comes to cost vs. value, with a midrange bathroom remodel, on average, producing a 64.0% return on investment in 2020.

with you to make the most of your budget and create a living space you’ll be proud of. Ironically, not hiring a designer in an effort to save money often ends up costing homeowners more. An expert will help make sure all is done right the first time and avoid costly mistakes.

NOTHING GREAT COMES EASY Remodeling is disruptive under the best of circumstances, so to ease the process, it really helps to be ready. That’s why the first step shouldn’t be about tarps or runners, but about communication. * © 2020 Hanley Wood, LLC. Complete data from the Remodeling 2020 Cost vs. Value Report can be downloaded free at costvsvalue.com.

But before you even start calculating your return, you need to take a realistic look at your budget. Discuss what you’re willing to spend with your designer before you start to plan. A Waypoint® authorized designer can work

GET THE FAMILY READY Before anything else, discuss the process with your family. Tell them what’s going to happen and the approximate duration of the project. Tell them to steer clear of work areas, and let them know how to use alternative areas of the home for their day-to-day living needs.

ADVISE THE NEIGHBORS And while communication is important in your home, don’t forget to advise your neighbors of your project. Making neighbors aware goes a long way toward having their support as you upgrade your new living space. Monopolizing all the on‑street parking for months tends to alienate the friendliest of neighbors. Just a little heads‑up about your remodel will go a long way.

CO LO R YOUR WORLD Finding a color palette for your new living space is as easy as opening your eyes. Look around. See colors that appeal to you. Choose only colors you are drawn to. Let the seasonal fall colors inspire you: soft golden orange, deep brown, leaves and sky. Or maybe you’re inspired by colors that are natural but vibrant—like a basket of artichokes at a farmers’ market. Or get inspired by a neutral room setting with spots of color from your magazine. Look everywhere—and if you really get stuck, check your closet. There’s likely a favorite sweater, dress or piece of clothing to inspire a color palette that’s exactly what you had in mind.

PICKING YOUR PAINT COLOR Picking the right paint color for your living space can seem daunting. Here are some guidelines to help you pick the best color for your space and create the feeling you’re looking to achieve. FIND INSPIRATION. Don’t pick your color for the room first. You need to draw inspiration from the pieces that will be in that room, such as a piece of furniture, a rug or a favorite piece of artwork.

ADDING MORE COLOR. Once you have your basic paint picked out, you might decide the room is not colorful enough for you. An easy way to add more color is to play up monochromatic color schemes by adding an accent color that is a cooler or warmer version of the initial color. Using a color wheel will make this much easier. Another technique using a color wheel is picking a complementary color—colors that are across from each other create a very intense and vibrant feeling when used together.

W A Y P O I N T L I V I N G S PA C E S . C O M

DON’T OVERSATURATE. Keep a balance with a neutral base palette and vibrant, colorful accents. Typically, you want to keep your paint mainly neutral and accent with colorful furniture and accessories, or maybe an accent wall. However, if you really want brightly colored walls, make sure the furniture and accessories in the room are neutral colors to balance it out.

USE TESTERS. Paint large swatches of different colors on a wall before making your final decision on color and sheen. Leave them for up to a week so you can experience them at different times of day and with different lighting.

CO LO R & B E AU T Y OF WOOD

The wood for every cabinet door created by Waypoint® is carefully selected. Mother Nature insists on originality, so the characteristics of the wood grain and finish, whether in Cherry or Maple, will naturally vary slightly from piece to piece. But when it all comes together, homeowners are certain to be satisfied with the look, style and “Wow” of their new living space.

CHERRY Cherry is a close-grained, multicolored hardwood with occasional pin knots and fine grain variations appearing as curls and waves. Streaking, knots and subtle color variations are what give this wood its unique character. Its color typically darkens some over time.

MAPLE Maple is an exceptionally hard, finely grained wood species with a fine, even texture. Many love the darker stains that moderate the color variance and lighter stains that mellow with golden hues over time.

PA I N T E D Long-lasting painted finishes on hardwood frames with furniture board center panels are a strong choice, with superior stability, consistency and coverage.
