Engineering for Kids - Junior Aerospace Engineering

The Junior Aerospace Engineering classes introduce our youngest engineers to fundamental concepts of aircraft and spacecraft design. Through open and focused exploration students explore and construct airplanes, rockets, helicopters, and more. Aerospace engineering is one of the newest disciplines of engineering, facilitated by the growth of the aviation industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Aerospace engineers are responsible for the design of aircraft and the subsequent construction process. Aerospace engineering can be further broken down into two separate branches: aeronautical engineering, which deals with the design of near-atmosphere aircraft, and astronautical engineering, which involves exo-atmosphere spacecraft. This weekly program is offered in both Franklin and Nolensville (2 class opportunities).

About James and the Giant Peach Jr: In this delightfully offbeat adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl adventure, a boy and his insect friends take an amazing journey across the ocean. Featuring a wickedly tuneful score and a witty and charming book, this adventurous musical about courage and self-discovery is destined to be a classic. When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that grows a tremendous peach, rolls into the ocean and launches a journey of enormous proportions. James befriends a collection of singing insects that ride the giant piece of fruit across the ocean, facing hunger, sharks and plenty of challenges along the way. For more information, contact Alison.Worden@williamsoncounty-tn.gov

Rising Stars Auditions

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins JR.

The Rising Stars winter production for 2023 will be Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins JR, based on one of the most popular Disney movies of all time and the Broadway musical that played for over 2,500 performances and received multiple Olivier and Tony Awards nominations. The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.” Those auditioning should refer to website in early November for important pre-audition information and forms.

Rehearsals will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:00-7:30pm, beginning Wednesday February 1 at the Academy Park Campus. There will also be four Saturday rehearsals from 12:30-3:30pm on February 4, 11, and March 4 at the Franklin Rec Center and from 9:30am-12:30pm on February 25. The last week of rehearsals (starting March 20) will be every night and will be at the College Grove Artsitorium. There is a mandatory cast/crew/parent meeting on the first night of rehearsals. Note: There will be no rehearsal during Spring Break, March 14-15.

to upper 80s and is made up of all skill levels. Everyone is welcome to pick up their instrument and join the band. Started in 2000, this band has grown and gained musical recognition and acclaim over the years throughout Williamson County and the surrounding mid-state area. They perform several free indoor and outdoor concerts each year for the community at various venues and parks. Rehearsals for the next season will start on February 2, 2023.

For information on joining the band, contact director Randy Frame at rlf1950@bellsouth.net.

Formed in 2017, the Williamson County Community Chorus is open for older teens, adults and seniors from the Middle Tennessee area.

In 2018, with just over 90 singers performing John Rutter’s Requiem for the Spring Concert, a YouTube video of the performance was discovered by a gentlemen with DCINY (Distinguished Concerts International, New York), who called the department to invite the chorus to participate in a performance of Requiem at Carnegie Hall in New York in January of 2020.

The Williamson County Community Chorus holds open auditions for ages 16 and up each January and August for its Spring and Fall seasons and always welcomes new singers. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Williamson County Enrichment Center.

The chorus is under the direction of Lynn Hodges, an accomplished musician with more than 30 years of experience as an accomplished conductor, vocal coach, producer, writer/arranger, clinician and the author of several best-selling books.
