CEO comment
As you all know we are facing challenges in California and New York with proposed bans. Our teams are ďŹ ghting hard with a combination of lobbyists, lawyers and media campaigns. Our messages are strong on freedom of choice and sustainability. But we face tough battles in California with a state that has a history of banning and a growing vegan agenda. I want to thank you all for writing in and supporting the lobbying campaign. It’s important we speak up for the right of people in America to buy what they want and to support natural rather than plastic fur. These battles will take months ahead, so your continued support will be needed. Thank you in advance. With regards, Mark Oaten. CEO, International Fur Federation

REMIX 2019 Reimagining Fur in Fashion
S
ince 2004, REMIX, the young fur and fashion design competition organised by the International Fur Federation (IFF) with the support of Vogue Talents, takes place during Milan Fashion Week. The IFF asked the competition’s 10 finalists, chosen from over 100 applicants from all over the world, to create three fur garments that were inspired by the theme: Responsibility. A panel of esteemed judges declared three winning designers during the annual award ceremony in Milan, and once again REMIX redefined fur in fashion. An esteemed panel of judges comprised of Sara Maino Sozzani (Deputy Director of Vogue Italy and Head of Vogue Talents), Gabriele Colangelo (Creative Director of Giada), Astrid Andersen (Danish Designer), Bryanboy (Fashion blogger, socialite and businessman), Samantha De Reviziis (sustainability expert and Founder of SDR Agency). The best REMIX jury in the competitions history meant the finalists were able to engage with some of the most influential names in fashion.

After welcome drinks and canapes were served to guests who toured the exhibition half Milanese hotspot Carlo e Camilla in Segheria – the venue for events hosted by Dior, Dolce and Gabbana and Versace – Ludovica Frasca welcomed Sara Maino and IFF CEO Mark Oaten on stage to say a few words. Then the much-coveted REMIX Gold Award was awarded to Berivan Cemal, from the Netherlands, whose collection is an investigation into her own immigrant background and the deep personal responsibility she feels to translate her heritage. As part of her REMIX Gold award, Berivan received the Kopenhagen Furs (KF) sponsored prize, which includes a paid trip to Copenhagen for a weeklong stay at Kopenhagen Furs design studio where they will receive 25 premium quality Kopenhagen Fur Mink skins to use in a new style. The REMIX Silver Award was won by Hüseyin Özer from Turkey. Hüseyin’s creations were inspired by the stained-glass window of the Hagia Sophia. Showcasing his multipurpose designs, in particular the judges were taken with Hüseyin’s skirt which could double as a bag. Hüseyin will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Studio NAFA 2019 at their headquarters in Toronto, Canada

Ludovica then called Thea Larsen from Saga Furs to present the final award of the evening, the Saga Award, which was won by Dong Wang from China. The naturally dyed blue fur Dong used in his designs represented the world’s irresponsible use and dependence on plastic. As part of his Saga Furs Award, Dong will receive an all-expense paid trip to Saga Furs Design Centre for a one week fur innovation workshop. As well as the technical training courses on offer, all three winning designers of REMIX 2019 will have the chance to see their creations featured in IFF’s upcoming fashion advertising campaign: FUR NOW, which will gain global visibility in key fashion media. As well as the opportunity to have exclusive exposure on Vogue Italia and vogue.it, and WWD. This kind of exposure for a young designer is rare, and will do much to further their budding careers.

Responsible and sustainable fashion is a topic that has captured the mood of the fashion industry; this gave the finalists much to consider when creating their three looks. Each year, REMIX brings a collection of young designers from all over the world to Milan offering them the opportunity of a lifetime. And each year, the 10 finalists showcase their innovative, elaborate, intricate, original and embellished fur creations and continue to push for sustainable and responsible fashion. The REMIX class of 2019 showed the fashion world how they, with their use of fur, continue to fight for eco-friendly fashion.

“I made it my passion to not only promote the fashionability of fur, but to help – and defend - the members of the industry.”
A
freshman at college majoring in fashion design, Sandy Blye, like most college students, was looking for a summer job when a friend of her parents, who worked for NYC-based fur manufacturer Geller Brothers, connected Sandy with the American Fur Industry (AFI), the predecessor to FICA. On that first day, I walked into a conference room that was filled with the most extraordinary furs I had ever seen; and it was love at first sight! Sandy gushed. Adopting a position at AFI each summer during her college years at Syracuse, so, upon her graduation, she was offered a permanent role as assistant to the AFI’s Executive Vice President. After just two years, following her boss’s retirement, Sandy was promoted to Executive Vice President. At just 22 years-young, Sandy was the first woman to hold the position. A monumental achievement which was covered in a full-page feature by USA Today and Crain’s New York. Sandy, at just 22, had set the bar not only for all women, but men of the fur trade too. From my first day working in the industry, Sandy remembers, I felt a strong connection not just to fur but also to the members of the industry. So many of the companies are family-run, multi-generational businesses. Coming from my own close-knit family, I connected to so many of the individuals. Some of my closest friends are in the trade. As such, I made it my passion to not only promote the fashionability of fur, but to help – and defend - the members of the industry. This is the reason I spend a significant part of my time doing industry-related work. The Fur Guru wonders how one has enough hours in the day… I’ll let Sandy explain! As someone who is incredibly organized, my effective time management allows me to primarily focus on my main role as PR Consultant for The Fur Salon at Saks Fifth Avenue and for Maximilian at Bloomingdale’s, which I thoroughly enjoy. My strong relationships with celebrity stylists and editors at prominent magazines worldwide has resulted in achieving high-level fashion media attention for furs as well as having gorgeous furs worn by many of the biggest names in entertainment. These celebrities become strong ambassadors for fur! It is important for me to also make time to support the industry. For my industry-related work, I am a member of the board of directors of FICA as well as of Fur New York, which is the local NYC-based organization. I organize FNY’s annual “Person of the Year” and membership drive dinner held every June where we honour a fur industry colleague who makes a significant contribution to the trade.

A FUR TRADE M U LT I H Y P H E N AT E All this important work goes hand-in-hand with Sandy Reports. For me, Sandy Reports was my introduction to Sandy, a woman with a mission to deliver the true facts, news and fur trade exclusives. But as I’m sure many of you are wondering, how did Sandy become the driving force behind one of the fur trades most valuable news outlets. Sandy explains… Two and a half years ago, my colleague and dear friend Sandy Parker passed away. Sandy had been publishing his weekly newsletter, Sandy Parker Reports, for more than 50 years. Upon his death, Sandy’s daughter called me and told me how fond of me Sandy was and how she would consider it an honour and a tribute to his legacy for me to take over his newsletter. With our namesake as the connection, I took it as a sign. I seamlessly renamed the newsletter Sandy Reports, and have been publishing it weekly ever since. Keeping in mind my consummate support of the industry, I vowed that this newsletter would be a true “trade publication” with all features focused on informing and supporting the trade. No politics, no internal conflicts, no gossip … just the facts - whether positive or not – always with an underlining support of all sectors of the industry.

“My strong relationships with celebrity stylists and editors at prominent magazines worldwide has resulted in achieving high-level fashion media attention for furs as well as having gorgeous furs worn by many of the biggest names in entertainment.”
Adopting a role on the front line, Sandy is always coming into contact with customers and celebrities. I need to know what is the typical conversation Sandy has with these influential groups. Do they still love fur but are too scared to wear it? Or are they turned off from fur as the media so seldom reports? I come in contact with the most fashion-conscious clients. These women that are shopping for fur, understand and appreciate its “Keeping in mind my consummate support of the fashionability, its warmth and its versatility. They don’t need validaindustry, I vowed that this newsletter would be a tion as they are already fur lovers. They do occasionally bring up the true “trade publication” with all features focused hypocrisy of the issue – activists that are against fur, but not meat, on informing and supporting the trade.” leather or wool. One client who is very fashion savvy, addressed Gucci’s decision to ban fur. “What about those gorgeous Gucci crocodile bags that we all love? Why are those OK and a mink coat isn’t? It’s ridiculous!” When I work with celebrity stylists, all they need to know is their clients love fur and want to wear it. They love the glamourous look and how it makes them feel. They, too, feel there is a deep sense of hypocrisy. It is very clear to me that the industry’s messages of sustainability and the hypocrisy of the animal activists’ movement are resonating and are being heard! There have been an increasing number of stories in the media supporting the industry’s position. I like to ask all my fur trade wonder women if there’s a quote they’d like to share to end our enlightening discussion on for all of our readers. So, is there a quote that springs to mind, Sandy? When I started in the fur industry, a mentor of mine told me, “You have two ears, but one mouth. Listen twice as much than you speak.” I remember those words every day in all the meetings and conference calls in which I participate. “And most important – always BE NICE and BE KIND! It’s that simple!” Duly noted, Sandy! Both of these are mottos we should all strive to live by. All that’s left to say is, on behalf of the IFF and the entire fur trade, thank you for all that you do to strengthen our industry. You are a guiding light and the definition of what it means to lead from the front.

Netherlands-born designer Berivan Cemal won the gold award, enabling her to access a weeklong training program at Kopenhagen Fur and receive 25 mink skins to use in her upcoming design projects. The Copenhagen-based auction company sponsored the prize. “What I have loved is the color the energy and the creativity that these young designers brought and particularly how they used fur in a different way so they do things that the manufacturers and the traditional furriers have never ever thought could be done with fur,” said Mark Oaten, chief executive officer of IFF. “Synthetics, which make up 60% of the textile production in the world, rely on petrochemicals that are severely harmful to the environment. And the process of producing petrochemicals, which relies on the manipulation of fossil fuels, is harmful too. Burning fossil fuels and petrochemicals releases materials like ash, nitrogen, sulphur, and carbon into the atmosphere, all of which contribute to acid rain and degrade the planet.” For the full article, please go to https://qz.com/quartzy/1543323/the-ethical-case-for-wearing-leather-fur-and-silk/

While the plastics backlash has focused on single-use products like straws, bottles and coffee cups, synthetic clothing is gaining attention because such garments shed plastic every time they are washed.” “While all clothing sheds fibers when washed, synthetic particles—unlike wool and cotton—don’t biodegrade. Most conventional washing-machine filters aren’t designed to trap such tiny particles, and while wastewater-treatment plants capture a big slice, they don’t trap everything. The problem is worse in countries that use lots of synthetic clothing and have fewer wastewater-treatment plants.”

FURMARK FURMARK The International Fur Federation (IFF) is in the process of developing FURMARK. FURMARK, is an independent world-class, comprehensive certification and traceability program that covers sustainability, animal welfare and the dressing and dyeing of fur. It is a guarantee of commitment to the highest sustainability standards and assurance that the fur industry is striving to further improve the sustainability of the sector. The program is based on three key principles: Science; Independent inspection; Transparency. FURMARK covers all aspects of the fur trade and after 2020 FURMARK certified furs will be sold through the auction houses globally. FURMARK incorporates global animal welfare programs reflecting different fur species: • WelFur • SAGA Certification by Finnish Standards • North American Farm-Raised • North American Wild Fur • Swakara • Russian Sable as well as the dressing and dyeing process. In the future, other natural fur programs may also form part of FURMARK as those standards are developed, independently assessed and approved. Since the FURMARK launch in Paris 2018, one-to-one brand meetings have been held in Europe, Asia and North America. In February, a FURMARK workshop was held in Hong Kong and a consumer focus group was held in both London and Hong Kong. In March, the leading sustainability consultancy group BSR led a FURMARK event in New York, and this will be followed by a consumer focus in early April. The insights from this work will inform the FURMARK roll-out process, including labelling, in-store marketing materials and development of the traceability system. Ahead of the 2020 launch, the FURMARK governance structure has been established. The IFF Board have full oversight, a separate FURMARK steering group will drive forward implementation. Sub-groups will focus on specific areas such as communications, traceability and the technical aspects of the welfare programs. The IFF is also seeking to appoint an external body to audit the system to ensure full transparency and compliance. Moreover, the IFF is working with traceability experts ChainPoint on a pilot program with the five global auction houses. The objective is to expand this pilot process to the whole FURMARK supply chain.

SUSTAINABILITY To have a sustainability strategy is now common place within the fashion industry. Natural fur is inextricably linked to nature and so for the fur industry sustainability is a necessity. It is not a nice to have, but a must have. With the help of a leading sustainability consultancy agency we have formulated a sustainably strategy. We consider it vital to tackle the issue holistically, therefore we take a three-pronged approach: good for welfare, good for the environment and good for people. These three pillars will comprise the fur industry’s sustainability strategy in Autumn 2019 with a full report the following year. It will be written in line with Global Reporting Initiative standards and will link in with the UN Sustainability Development Goals. The aim is to identify the positive impact the industry is already making but also to go further and commit to improving its sustainability. In the coming weeks we will be reaching out to IFF members with targeted surveys in order to begin a benchmarking exercise. From late March we will begin to reect our new sustainability strategy via our website wearefur.com

Hunters and Furriers Team Up To Make Sustainable Fashion Design students from Viennese fashion school Sieben-Eichengasse have again competed in the Red Fox Austria Award competition last weekend and demonstrated how nature conservation and fashion design could go hand in hand towards sustainability. Besides the design student award, there is also an award for professional furriers. True to tradition winning designs were announced at the Hohe Jagd & Fischerei fair in Salzburg, an international event hosting more than 45.000 guests. The Red Fox Austria Award was initiated in 2007, to demonstrate to the broader public what creative possibilities there are for the use of the Austrian red fox. Every year 50.000-60.000 red foxes are shot in Austria for conservation purposes. Some 8.000 foxes are pelted and utilised by national furriers – and some again are used in the annual Red Fox Award. “Fur is a natural, biodegradable material, and when you combine that with quality craftsmanship and interesting design, you have a product consumers care about and appreciate for a long time. We give value to waste, and the Red Fox Award works to make people aware of the sustainability qualities of fur,” says Otmar Sladky, President of the Austrian furriers’ guild says. Hunting is popular, but strictly regulated practice in Austria. Only licensed hunters are allowed to shoot foxes, yet the practice is supported by 75 per cent of the Austrians. Using the pelts for long-lasting garments adds sustainability aspect to the fox hunting, and for the design students it is often their first opportunity to work with fur: “Fur is normally out of reach for students because it is too costly to experiment with, but here we have an otherwise unlikely group of hunters, furriers and students teaming up to create a sustainable alternative to fast fashion. It is very inspirational for everybody who is involved,” says Otmar Sladky. In addition to the national competition, the students get the opportunity to submit their creations for the international fashion design competition REMIX. Very appropriate to the Austrian award, the theme of this year’s REMIX competition was ‘Responsibility’. FUR EUROPE launches New Website on Sustainability and Fur The new website Sustainablefur.com is designed to promote the sustainability features of fur with a focus on animal welfare, environmental performance and traceability. This mirrors some of the fur sector's most prominent current policies such as WelFur, the FEC project as well as IFF’s Furmark. Members could contribute to the promotion of fur by linking to the website whenever possible and share with Fur Europe their sustainability stories. Belgian Region Flanders Bans Fur Farming Flanders become the third Belgian region to ban fur farming, following the example of Wallonia in 2015 and Brussels in 2017, where, however, no fur farms have ever been operating. Flanders itself has 17 working mink farms producing approx. 150.000 pelts in 2018. The ban has its roots in moral grounds, and not animal welfare issues with fur being considered unnecessary. Considerations over environmental impact are also mentioned in the law’s preambles. The ban was expected as it comes after ten years of a political debate over fur farming in the country, which gained further traction in the wake of the Dutch ban in 2014. Contrary to the Netherlands however, Belgian fur farmers have secured a compensation which will be distributed according to the production size. Force feeding to produce foie gras in Flanders was banned in the same regulation

Fendi and IFF visit to Sojuzpushnina Auction. On January 31, 2019, FENDI and a representative of the International Fur Federation (IFF) visited the Sojuzpushnina auction. The purpose of the visit was to get acquainted with the structure of the auction sale of farmed and wild sables, sales traceability, sustainable use of natural resources and certification of fur in accordance with the principles of Furmark project. As part of the auction visit, the delegation members inspected the presented collection of wild and farmed sable, its sorting system, including using an automated sorting machine, as well as an auction system for monitoring goods that allows tracing the origin of the skins to the places of its harvest. During the visit, a meeting was held on the traceability of turnover of farmed and wild sable, as well as certification of sable skins, in which buyers from Italy, Greece, Germany, Great Britain, the USA and other countries took part. IFF Director of Standards and Sustainability Paul Stockall made a presentation on the international certification project Furmark. FURMARK is a global fur tracking and certification program that covers the entire production chain. It provides the highest standards of welfare and environmental standards. Aleksey Plekhanov, CEO of Sojuzpushnina, made a presentation on the topic of transparency of wild sable pelts turnover in Russia. Sable production in Russia is clearly regulated by current legislation and is under the control of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation and it’s regional offices. The number of the main types of fur animals in Russia is monitored regularly. Currently, Russian Fur Union together with the International Fur Federation (IFF) is conducting work on monitoring the population of wild sable in Russia, which will allow more efficient use of natural resources of sable, without negative impact to the population. Following the visit, FENDI positively assessed the existing sable turnover traceability system and expressed confidence in the further use of this type of fur in their collections. Farmed sable certification In coordination with the management of the International Fur Federation (IFF), the Research Institute of Fur Breeding and Rabbit Breeding (NIIPZK) was determined as an independent body that provides services for certifying fur farms in the Russian Federation To assess the compliance of fur farms of the Russian Federation with the requirements of the Standing Committee of the Council of Europe on the protection of animals and the Furmark project, an expert group was formed to carry out on-site inspections of fur farms, summarizing the results of inspection and certification of farms. The Furmark project for farmed sable has begun the practical implementation which will be carried out in 2019-2020.
