t is so exciting to have a full-scale Royal Ascot in operation for the first time since 2019 – even more so in this very special Platinum Jubilee year. The five days of Royal Ascot 2022 will be a fabulous display of elite Thoroughbred racing as we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s extraordinary achievement. We all hope that another winner in the Royal colours will be added to The Queen’s current tally of 24 winners at the Royal Meeting since 1952.

All of the racecourse enclosures are open again and we are thrilled to be welcoming back everyone who wishes to attend, following a year behind closed doors and then a year with restricted crowds in 2021. We have made some reductions to the capacities across the three main enclosures this year, ensuring that all of our guests will be able to enjoy a little bit more space. Of course, much has changed throughout the last couple of years,

and on the track the emergence of Hollie Doyle, Cieren Fallon and Marco Ghiani represents a talented new generation of jockeys. Much remains familiar though, and I am sure that many of you will be hoping that Frankie Dettori can add to his already astonishing tally of 76 Royal Ascot winners throughout the week. Ever the showman, at the age of 51 he remains at the top of his game, and who would bet against him eventually getting close to Lester Piggott’s all-time record of 116 winners at the Royal Meeting. We are hugely grateful to QIPCO, Longines and Howden, our three Official Partners, as well as to all our Official Sponsors and Suppliers. This year we welcome Peroni Italia for the first time as the Official Beer of Ascot Racecourse. We also welcome Slingsby as our Official Gin Supplier. We are committed to playing our part in ensuring British racing maintains its position as a worldleading industry. In 2022, we are providing record prize money of £8.65 million across the 35 races – an increase of 18% on 2019 values. Two of the feature events, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday and the renamed Platinum Jubilee Stakes on Saturday, become the first £1 million races at Royal Ascot. Our eight Group 1 races and a total of 19 Pattern or Listed level contests

attract the greatest concentration of equine talent at a single race meeting anywhere in the world. This year we are expecting competitors from Japan, America, Australia, Ireland, France and Germany, all aiming to take on the leading British hopes. Each of the five days of Royal Ascot are World Pool events, meaning that people betting into the pool benefit from increased liquidity and better value. Hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, with whom we launched the venture in 2019, many countries around the world are expected to bet into the Ascot pool. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the globe and it will be particularly enjoyable for many friends in the racing world to see each other for the first time in three years. We hope that the millions watching on ITV, Sky Sports Racing, NBC in the USA and Green Channel Japan, as well as many other global networks, enjoy it just as much as those of us lucky enough to be present. I hope that you have a wonderful week. Yours sincerely

ew sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution, with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
It was Queen Anne who, in 1711, first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”. 6

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters – rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern-day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes. THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost 50 years. In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that the Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals. 8
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today,

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006, and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013. In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat-racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later.

In 2012, Ascot Racecourse was at the very heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it has been the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being two notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled an impressive 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions, including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and – more recently – the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. #RoyalAscot

Lester Piggott Lester Piggott passed away in May this year at the age of 86. In Ascot’s three-hundred-plus-year history no jockey has dominated the Royal Meeting like him. His tally of 116 Royal Ascot winners stands alone in the modern era, a total that is unlikely to be surpassed and one that came at a time when the meeting was just four days long. 10

P
iggott’s first Royal Ascot victory came in 1952 on Malka’s Boy for trainer Walter Nightingall in the Wokingham Stakes. ‘The Long Fellow’ went on to be associated with some of the greatest horses to have graced Royal Ascot.
He won the Gold Cup a record 11 times, including a then-record threetimes on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977, one on board Le Moss and a brace with Ardross in 1981 and 1982. In modern history, he also remains the most successful jockey in the King’s Stand Stakes, Royal Hunt Cup, Norfolk Stakes, Coronation Stakes and Platinum Jubilee Stakes (formerly the Cork and Orrery Stakes). His seven winners in the King’s Stand Stakes included three for Vincent O’Brien in the 1970s as well as one of the leading post-war sprinters, Right Boy, in 1957 who he subsequently partnered to victory in the 1958 and 1959 Cork and Orrery Stakes. Of those 116 winners, he rode 18 apiece for trainers Noel Murless and Vincent O’Brien. Twice he rode eight winners at a single meeting, in 1965 and 1975. Success at Royal Ascot wasn’t limited to the saddle either as when he briefly turned his hand to training in the mid1980s he sent out Cutting Blade to win the Coventry Stakes in 1986. After famously returning to the saddle, his final winner at the Royal Meeting was College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes, at the age of 57.

Piggott went on to enjoy success as a breeder being the joint ownerbreeder of Superstar Leo who won the Norfolk Stakes in 2000. He also part-owned Mont Etoile, trained by his son-in-law William Haggas, who won the Ribblesdale Stakes in 2006. He is therefore the only known person to have ridden, trained, owned and bred a winner at Royal Ascot. A statue of Lester Piggott sculpted by William Newton was unveiled at Ascot Racecourse in 2019 and stands on the Brigadier Gerard Lawn. Speaking during the unveiling, Piggott said, “I have enjoyed some great days at Royal Ascot. Everybody looked forward to this meeting. To win the Gold Cup once is special and I was very lucky to win the race on 11 occasions. "I rode some brilliant horses in the race including Sagaro, but probably the best was a filly called Gladness. It has been a very lucky course for me." ROYAL ASCOT HIGHLIGHTS • Total Royal Ascot winners - 116 • First Royal Ascot winner – Malka’s Boy in the 1952 Wokingham Stakes • Last Royal Ascot winner – College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes • Gold Cup wins – 11 including three on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977 • Eight winners in a single Royal Ascot twice in 1965 and 1975

Mark Souster talks to Frankie Dettori about achieving victory in all eight Group 1 races at the Royal Meeting…

T
wo years ago Frankie Dettori finally completed the ‘grand slam’ of the eight Group 1 races across the Royal Ascot programme when Alpine Star won the Coronation Stakes – the feature race of today’s card - for Jessica Harrington. It had been a while coming.
“They (the Group 1s) are the hardest races to win in the world as every trainer and jockey will testify to. It means everything to have managed it,” said Dettori, the undisputed King of Ascot. “The race went almost according to plan as much as they ever do and I was lucky that the pace was perfect. At Ascot it is crucial to be positioned perfectly on the bend as you meet the slightly faster ground in the straight.” Before this year, the 51-year-old veteran has won 76 races at Royal
Ascot, the second most of all time behind the incomparable Lester Piggott whose record of 116 is unlikely ever to be surpassed. Given his track record, it is perhaps surprising he has only won once in Her Majesty The Queen’s colours when Phantom Gold took the Ribblesdale Stakes in 1995. The symbiotic relationship between royalty and racing is perhaps best personified by that of Dettori and Ascot. It is a venue where monarch and jockey – both revered in their own way become especially animated. “A week before Royal Ascot I always get the same combination of nerves and excitement,” explained Dettori who loves nothing better than to hold court in the Winners’ Enclosure. “It is the biggest and best week of my year and I know that I come alive there

and I’m in a different zone. It lifts me every time!” The Platinum Jubilee ensures the Royal Meeting carries extra resonance. “It’s even more poignant as her appearances have become rarer throughout the year. When you meet her in the paddock or on the Winners’ Podium you know instantly that she understands everything and what it means to her and the audience. “If I have one more Royal Ascot winner, I’d love it to be for Her Majesty,” Dettori continued. “It is always a tremendous honour to ride for her. The thrill is always the same. There is enormous pride riding for her.” Frankie’s first victory at the Royal Meeting was way back in 1990. It’s a sobering thought that many of the jockeys he now rides against weren’t even born then.

rode when he first arrived from Italy. It was a classic hold up victory. Nineteen at the time, Dettori had Markofdistinction in dead last at the halfway point of the one mile contest. He broke cover a furlong out and switched to the rails and held off Mirror Black in a ding-dong finish by a neck.
“The Gold Cup has been my race over the years and they are really special and I have been so lucky to have been associated with Stradivarius.”
Cumani knows better than most what makes Frankie tick and what makes him stand out, his 16
natural exuberance apart. “When Frankie wants to win, the horse will win,” Cumani told me. “The great thing about him has always been the will to win he can transmit to a horse through the reins. He is a confidence rider, but when he is up he is the best rider in the world. You can see his enthusiasm transmit to the horse like no other jockey.
“With Frankie it is sheer enthusiasm. He engages with the people, with the crowd, the fans. And Ascot is his great love. He is a showman. We are always very pleased

when he wins a big race and is in a happy place. If you follow racing you follow Frankie. Racing is not tribal like football. You don’t follow Godolphin or Coolmore. You follow Frankie.”
the St. James’s Palace Stakes. In so doing, he took his winning tally to six for the week, edging out Jim Crowley on placings, to win his second consecutive title and his seventh in all.
Dettori’s Royal Ascot roll of honour includes 24 Group 1 successes, with eight in the Gold Cup and seven in the Queen Anne, which was elevated to Group 1 status in 2003. Four times he’s won the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. The Commonwealth Cup and the newly named Platinum Jubilee Stakes have twice each come his way while the Coronation Stakes and the King’s Stand Stakes – with one each - complete his remarkable haul.
His haul that year also included a third straight Gold Cup on the incomparable Stradivarius. Stradivarius won his first Gold Cup in 2018 but for pure class nothing can eclipse his hat-trick victory in 2020. Dettori swung him wide around the home turn and pressed the button two furlongs out. The response was scintillating as Stradivarius streaked to a ten length triumph.
His 2011 victory in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Rewilding was another masterclass that lives long in the memory. Ballydoyle had the favourite with So You Think as well as Jan Vermeer as his pacemaker. Under Ryan Moore, So You Think hit the front and soon built up a three length lead. But Dettori got to work on Godolphin’s Rewilding and in the final furlong dug deep to make up the distance and prevail by half a length. Two years ago really saw Frankie in his pomp. Going into the final day of the meeting he was quoted at 20/1 to win the Leading Jockey award. But in typical irrepressible fashion he carved out a 150-1 treble courtesy of Campanelle in the Queen Mary Stakes, the aforementioned Alpine Star in the Coronation Stakes and Palace Pier in the Royal Ascot Insider
By the time this goes to print we will know whether or not Stradivarius has joined Yeats as a four-time winner of the Gold Cup but either way he will always be remembered as a horse that defined the later years of Frankie’s career. “It will be wonderful to give him a good farewell, because potentially, I’m sure it will be his last Ascot, but it could be his last race, too. "I will be excited but emotional when I cross the line, and I will be very sad afterwards. I know it will be very emotional for me. “The Gold Cup has been my race over the years and they are really special and I have been so lucky to have been associated with Stradivarius.”

Pastures new Eleanore Kelly discovers what life holds for horses after they have retired from the racetrack – and finds herself reunited with some Flat-racing stars of the past
A
round 7,000 thoroughbreds are bred for racing each year, and while many of them enjoy successful careers on the track, often Flat racehorses can be retired as young as four or five years old. Considering most horses live beyond 20, this begs the question – where do they go next? Since 2000, British Horseracing’s official charity, Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), has transformed the lives of thousands of thoroughbreds after racing. Promoting the versatility and adaptability of racehorses for other equestrian pursuits after they retire, the charity not only provides a platform for owners and trainers to rehome horses and for people to find their thoroughbred partners, it also offers training and education, as well as competitions for people who give these marvellous animals a second chance. In addition, the charity rolls out a ‘safety net’ for ex-racehorses that would otherwise be vulnerable, promoting the highest standards of horse welfare, providing care and funding, and often placing them in accredited rehoming and retraining centres. Di Arbuthnot is CEO of RoR and explains that the seed of the idea came from Andrew Parker Bowles OBE, following a TV programme that catapulted the issue of horse welfare onto the stage. Andrew was a director of the British Horseracing Board and reinforced that there should be some sort of after-care provision. After discussion, funding was secured from the wider industry and a board was duly formed. “We felt the most sensible thing to do was to be proactive and raise the profile of the thoroughbred in the equestrian world, to encourage people to take them on,” says Arbuthnot. “It has grown very rapidly, and we have 10,599 horses on the register.” the Royal Ascot Insider
These horses enjoy a new life in a multitude of disciplines – dressage, eventing, showing, polo or simply as hacks and companions. “Retraining them takes time, and that can also contribute to what sort of level they get to,” Arbuthnot explains. “Many people who take them on have families and work alongside their horses, so our programme is mainly about grassroots training and offering help and education to these owners. I think many of them enjoy that experience of learning together.” Due to the popularity of the brand and the impressive versatility and intelligence of the thoroughbred, most trainers are now finding it very easy to move horses on. “It’s the intelligence that helps with the transition,” says Arbuthnot. “With patience and the right training, many horses can go quite easily from being a sprinter and running very fast in one direction, to a completely different activity such as dressage. A change of diet, routine and training, and they can become something else entirely – they are intelligent enough to switch over like that.” #RoyalAscot

Meeting Old Friends
Many former runners at Ascot are now enjoying a new lease of life. Here are some you may remember from their racing heydays… QUADRILLE Quadrille, sired by the great Danehill Dancer, was bred and owned by The Queen. At 15 years old, he’s leading a very different life to the one he started – he is now a successful dressage horse. In his heyday, Quadrille had much success as a racehorse when trained by Richard Hannon Snr. He ran seven times and had three wins, amassing £42,228 in prize money. At the peak of his career, he raced at Royal Ascot and was beaten by a short head in 2010 in the Hampton Court Stakes. Sadly, in 2012 at the age of five he sustained a career-ending injury, but he went on to begin a new career with Louise Robson, who specialises in re-training retired racehorses and runs Thoroughbred Dressage in Buckinghamshire. Initially, Robson was not convinced ‘Quad’ had all the attributes to succeed in dressage, where horses must be highly trainable and attuned to the rider’s commands, but also show expressive paces and presence in the arena. However, he has far surpassed her expectations and is now the highest performing former racehorse on the UK dressage circuit, competing at International Intermediate 1. As well as enjoying success in the dressage arena, Quadrille also performed for The Queen at her 90th birthday celebrations and has attended RoR exhibitions at Blenheim International Horse Trials. “As he has developed, he has blossomed into something truly exceptional,” says Robson, who hopes to be able to compete with him at Grand Prix, the highest level of dressage competition, one day. Robson adores Quad’s “zest for life” and says that he is also known as ‘Peter Pan’, because he is the horse that never grew up. “This horse is incredible,” she smiles. “If Quadrille’s example encourages others to get a racehorse and take up dressage or simply to hack it around for fun, that would be wonderful.” 22
LIMATO Limato was a top-class sprinter and winner of 14 of his 33 races for Henry Candy, including the 2015 Merriebelle Stable Pavilion Stakes at Ascot. He has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable since he retired from racing in 2020 and has gone on to take part in RoR showing classes. In 2021, they had some good results at the Southern Area Show and Southern Regional Show, before ending with a win at the West Wiltshire. JerramHunnable also competed with The Queen’s ex-racehorse, Barbers Shop, with great success in the show ring.

NAMIBIAN
THE TIN MAN
Namibian was a Royal Ascot winner for Mark Johnston in 2011. He is now thriving in his second career as a para dressage horse. Under the training of Julie Frizzell, a retired RAF Wing Commander, Namibian proved to be a quick learner, and the pair have been selected to represent Great Britain three times, as well as qualifying for the British Dressage National Para Dressage Championships.
The Tin Man is another notable Royal Ascot competitor that is enjoying a career change. The nine-year-old gelding was trained by James Fanshawe in Newmarket. He won nine of his 31 races on the Flat and £1,274,888 in prize money during his career, proving to be a dream pioneer for the Fred Archer syndicate who owned him. Among his victories, he claimed three Group 1 sprint races: the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes in 2016, the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2017 and the Haydock 32Red Sprint Cup Stakes in 2018.
TRIP TO PARIS
The Tin Man retired in 2021 after an injury occurred during a routine workout. He was rushed to the Newmarket Equine Hospital for treatment, but his racing days were over. After the injury was stabilised, he was given time to heal and spent the next few months at rest. He has since come back in for rehabilitation under the watchful eye of Claire Mackay, who is James Fanshawe’s secretary.
Trip To Paris earned more than £800,000 during his racing career, the highlight of which was victory in the 2015 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. He retired from racing in 2017 and, after winning his first outing as a show horse, he is now excelling at dressage, carrying himself beautifully with a “commanding presence”, as described by new owner Julie White.
“The plan is to bring him back into work steadily and I am lucky as he takes everything in his stride,” says Mackay. “We would like to get out and do some RoR showing. I am still in contact with his owners who love to hear all about his rehab progression, and they have continued to support him throughout his treatments.”

But what of the younger generation – particularly those who don’t have a family name steeped in racing? Who is leading the next wave of talented trainers, eager for success and hoping to add their own names to the roll of honour at Royal Ascot? Born in Ireland and now based in England, after learning his trade with a long stint in Australia in between, David Loughnane is becoming increasingly familiar to racing fans in Britain. In 2021, a 1–2 finish in the Royal Ascot Insider
the Kensington Palace Stakes was a huge moment for the trainer, with Lola Showgirl edging out stablemate Ffion to give David his first-ever Royal Ascot winner. The following day the stable came agonisingly close to another victory, when Go Bears Go was beaten by a head in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes. “2021 was a bit surreal really, and even now it still feels that way,” says Loughnane, as he looks back on last year’s Royal Meeting. “To win with Lola Showgirl was an incredible moment for the whole yard, and then to come so close the next day in the Norfolk Stakes with Go Bears Go was amazing too. It’s a Group race that has been won by so many good trainers with so many good horses. We were just drawn on the wrong side, but the horse did us proud. #RoyalAscot
“The whole experience last year was unforgettable for all of us – it meant as much to every member of my staff as it did to me.” The importance of Royal Ascot in the sporting calendar, and to everyone involved in horse racing, is clear in the minds of Loughnane and his team. “It’s synonymous with racing around the world,” he says. “Everyone knows that Royal Ascot means horse racing, and if you are a trainer, owner or jockey, it’s the one place you want to be involved with. “Being able to say, ‘We had a winner at Royal Ascot is what you hope might happen one day when you start out, whatever your role in the yard.” And this sense of occasion is one that ramps up even more in late spring, with the meeting drawing closer as the weeks go by. “We’d like to think that we’ll go there with the 29
best team we can. The first half of the season is totally geared to Royal Ascot,” Loughnane explains. “Go Bears Go is being prepared to go back there for the Commonwealth Cup and hopefully Lola Showgirl will run again too. We’ve also got a handful of promising two-year-olds and we’re optimistic that some of them might make the grade to go to Royal Ascot. “It’s an exciting time for us,” he enthuses. “If you’re in racing and

you’re not fired up every year for Royal Ascot, you’re probably in the wrong industry.” Another trainer to make a breakthrough and grab some headlines in the last year or so is Newmarket-based George Boughey. Like Loughnane, Boughey served his apprenticeship as a trainer in Australia, before returning home to England to become assistant to Hugo Palmer. He was granted a trainer’s licence in 2019 and set up on his own,

with great success to date – including a narrow miss at Royal Ascot last year when Oscula finished third in the Albany Stakes. A couple of weeks before Royal Ascot, Boughey’s Mystery Angel was second in the Oaks at Epsom. The stable also tasted Group 2 success in 2021, among a host of other winners. This year, Royal Ascot is again a central focus for his team. “It’s the pinnacle of global racing; whether you train in Britain,

“If you’re in racing and you’re not fired up every year for Royal Ascot, you’re probably in the wrong industry.” America, Japan or Australia, you want to win at Royal Ascot,” he says. “Last year we were third in the Albany Stakes with Oscula and it definitely whetted the appetite for this year... to bring more horses to the meeting and try to be even more competitive. “Growing up you watch the legendary trainers – the Stoutes, the Cecils – winning dozens of races at Royal Ascot, and you realise that just getting one winner would be amazing.” So how are things shaping up for the Boughey team ahead

of this year’s Royal Meeting? “There are horses that you identify even in the previous year that you hope you might be able to bring to Royal Ascot,” he says. “We had our first twoyear-old runner of the year at the end of March and it would be great to have a good enough horse to take there, let alone trouble the judge. At the moment, most of our two-year-olds are unraced – even the precocious ones – so the dreams are still alive! “We had 87 winners across Europe last year. It’s a number I never dreamed of having so early in my career, my second season, and #RoyalAscot
we’ll just try to keep improving the quality as we go forward.” And if he could pick just one race he’d love to win at Royal Ascot, what would be top of Boughey’s list? “Any win at Royal Ascot would be special, but if you’re making me pick one it would be the St James’s Palace Stakes,” he replies. “All the best threeyear-old milers usually run in it, from Britain, Ireland and France. I was working with Hugo Palmer when the yard won the race with Galileo Gold in 2016 and that was a massive day. Another one like that would be incredible!” 31
Welcoming Our Heroes

scot Racecourse is again proud to welcome the three principal single Service Armed Forces charities, namely the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund. Each charity works tirelessly to support military personnel, past and present, and their families in times of need with a wide range of practical, emotional and financial support. They would not, however, be able to provide this vital level of care without the public’s support. Our long-term support of the charities includes a donation from the sale of certain beverages across our enclosures during Royal Ascot, which in 2019 amounted to over £17,000. Our concessionaires also donate a percentage of their sales on the days they are with us.
The charities are also our official bucket collectors on Wednesday and Friday and are always generously supported by our racegoers. You can find out more about these charities and their vital work by reading the stories on the following page.

The RAF Benevolent Fund’s advice and advocacy team stepped in and took the case all the way to the Ombudsman, ensuring no other family would be put in the same position. The Lambert family were refunded more than £45,000 after an ombudsman ruled that the council had breached its duty of care to step in. O
nce a backstage process, production and supply chain transparency is now fully embedded in the fashion psyche – conscious shoppers want to know exactly how sustainable their outfits are, and if the craftsmen and women behind them were treated ethically.
Royal Ascot has long been an advocate of individual style where guests feel comfortable in their sartorial choices, while adhering to dress codes. And far from a luddite when it comes to responsible fashion, this totem of tradition and custom welcomes and encourages spectators to embrace the circular fashion economy, whether by donning a vintage hat and glove duo or peacocking in a ruffled (and rented) summer dress. Digging a little deeper into a fashion brand for moral threads and deciding if it aligns with your own values can be overwhelming, adding yet another layer to the pre-races shopping scramble. So, allow us to save you some homework by drawing those threads together...

R EN TA L Where renting clothes was once reserved for elaborate fancy dress costumes, top hats and tails, it’s now a fully fledged part of the social fashion scene. “I love your dress” now, more than often, prompts “Oh it’s rented”, with a smirk. While the notion of renting occasionwear for women has surged in popularity, hiring is a long-standing tradition for menswear at Royal Ascot, particularly for tails and top hats, whose outings tend to be limited.

BY R OTAT I O N This self-proclaimed ‘social network to rent, lend and buy designer fashion’ certainly has the look and feel of Instagram. Whether checking if a dress can arrive in time for the races, or asking for better images, there’s always someone there to respond, and the ‘like’ button makes for easy online shopping when browsing through pages of Victoria Beckham suits, hats big enough for the Royal Enclosure (a four-inch base, to be precise) and svelte Saloni dresses.

As the voice of Owners, the ROA are consistently promoting the impact and benefits of ownership whilst working to make ownership more rewarding. Once again we will be hailing our popular “ROA Owner of the Day” for Royal Ascot, which showcases an owner with a runner at the meeting.
T
oday’s (Friday 17 June) ROA Owner of the Day is Newsells Park Stud - Ossie Ardiles syndicate, which owns Espressoo, a runner in the Sandringham Stakes (5pm). A baking hot Royal Ascot on Friday will be more about cold drinks than coffee, but there is still a shot of Espressoo to be had in the Sandringham. The daughter of Dark Angel, bred by Newsells Park Stud out of Danehill Dancer’s daughter Elas Diamond, is one of several coming into the mile handicap for three-year-old fillies in good order, having won at Ayr and Chelmsford and been beaten a head at York on her three runs this year. What’s more, she has yet to finish worse than fourth in her six-race career. In competing at the most prestigious Flat meeting on the planet she provides her Hertfordshire stud’s Ossie Ardiles syndicate with a fantastic early highlight, given that it launched just three months ago. Former midfield maestro Ardiles, the Tottenham and Argentinian legend who helped his nation to World Cup glory in 1978, is very much involved - Newsells the Royal Ascot Insider
Park’s owner Graham Smith-Bernal is a big Spurs fan - and will be at the track on Friday to cheer on the filly. Gary Coffey, the syndicate manager, and aptly-named when it comes to discussing Espressoo, says: “We are thrilled to have a runner at Royal Ascot, especially a filly who goes there with solid credentials and in great form. She is a progressive filly who Mark and Charlie Johnston have always liked, and is well entitled to take her chance on Friday. “There are 20 shareholders and it’s a really interesting group. They’re from the sports, business, legal, medical and media worlds, and we also have the local vicar involved keeping an eye on us all! It’s a fun group and the members are enjoying the ride, they all have a great passion for sport. “Ossie is very involved, he’s extremely enthusiastic and will be there on Friday with his wife Silvia, they’re really looking forward to it. “The majority of shareholders will be there, and with partners we’ll have 20-plus people supporting the filly.” The syndicate was launched in March with six horses to go into bat with, spread between the Johnstons, John #RoyalAscot

and Thady Gosden, William Haggas and Roger Varian. Coffey says: “We have Espressoo, then another three-year-old filly named Oblong Song, with Roger Varian, who runs on Thursday at Chelmsford, and the remaining four are two-year-olds. “There’s Perfect Play, who is named after Ossie’s performance in the 1978 World Cup Final! He’s with Charlie and Mark Johnston and has had just the one run, in the race won by subsequent Coventry winner [Bradsell] at York. “He’s a full-brother to Grenoble, trained by William Haggas, who was just touched off in the first race at Epsom on Derby day. Perfect Play is a nice horse and will be especially so next year, though he’ll be running again this year. “We also have an attractive Nathaniel filly called Atlantic Belle. She’s with John and Thady Gosden. Again, she’s a nice type but it will be all about next year for her. She will be out this autumn but is a long-term prospect. “The other two are Viterbo, a colt with William Haggas, who will be racing this summer at some point, and another interesting colt, Green Go, who is with Roger Varian.” The vast majority of syndicates of course are racing through and through, as opposed to having a bloodstock or stud basis, which rather sets apart Newsells’ initiative. “We’re first and foremost a stud farm and all the 44
members have been here, they have seen the mares and foals and stallions, and will visit again, and we’ve had days in Newmarket and will be visiting other studs also,” says Coffey. “The syndicate is an offshoot of our stud operation and the brainchild of Graham Smith-Bernal, our new owner. He comes from a very successful business background and instigated this. It was one of the first items he put to the management team after purchasing the stud last year. “Our boss was very keen to start a syndicate to involve people with a passion for sport who are not necessarily currently involved in racehorse ownership and to make it very inclusive to the stud. We’re very pleased to be achieving this and going to Royal Ascot in our first year, and want to build on that.” Friday will be an exciting afternoon all round for the boss, the stud staff and syndicate members as Mr SmithBernal also has a runner himself in the concluding event at Royal Ascot, the Palace of Holyroodhouse Handicap. “Mr Smith-Bernal has some horses who run in his own personal colours and Manaccan, who runs at Royal Ascot on Friday, is a nice colt,” says Coffey. “He’s training well and one of the top-rated horses in the race; it’s all very exciting for everybody involved.”

RACE HISTORIES
Friday The Albany Stakes (Group 3) Six furlongs, Two Year Old Fillies This race was first run in 2002 as the Henry Carnarvon Stakes, honouring The Queen’s late racing manager, and proved so successful that it was promoted to Group 3 status in 2005. Restricted to two-year-old fillies, the six-furlong event provides one of the first opportunities of the season for promising types to prove their ability and go on to harbour Guineas aspirations.
The Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) Six furlongs, Three Year Olds Colts and Fillies The Commonwealth Cup was a completely new race in 2015 and joined the King’s Stand Stakes and Platinum Jubilee Stakes to become the third Group 1 sprint at Royal Ascot. The race, run over six furlongs, is restricted to three-yearold colts and fillies and was put in place as a Europe-wide measure to create a better Pattern for young sprinters and improve the quality of sprint races across the continent. Several races in the run up to the Commonwealth Cup were promoted in tandem, including the Commonwealth Cup Trial at Ascot, in April to Group 3. The 2019 renewal of the Commonwealth Cup, won by Advertise, was the joint highest rated three-year-old race in the world.
The Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap) One mile, four furlongs, Three Year Olds & Upwards Originally the Bessborough Stakes, named after the fifth Earl of Bessborough, who was Master of the Buckhounds between 1848 and 1866, the race was renamed the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes in 1999. First run in 1914 as a fivefurlong event for two-year-olds, it has now evolved into a middle distance handicap for three-year-olds and upward. 52

The Coronation Stakes (Group 1)
Old mile, Three Year Old Fillies First run in 1840 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria two years previously, the Coronation Stakes is for three-year-old fillies and regularly attracts the winners of the British, Irish and French 1,000 Guineas. Recently it has also started to attract some of the top American fillies and so is a race that acts to crown the best of that year's Classic generation over a mile. It was promoted to Group 1 level in 1988 and the most recent filly to follow up from one of the Guineas is Alpha Centauri who broke the track record when winning in 2018.
The Sandringham Stakes (Handicap)
One mile, Three Year Old Fillies Originally registered as the Fern Hill Stakes, this race was part of the traditional Heath Day card on the Saturday after Royal Ascot. It was renamed after the Norfolk royal residence when the Royal Meeting was expanded to five days as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. This is a competitive handicap over a mile, limited to three-year-old fillies only.
The King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2)
One mile, four furlongs, Three Year Old Colts & Geldings Formerly known, and still colloquially referred to as the Ascot Derby, this race was inaugurated in 1834 and regularly featured horses of both sexes that had competed in the middle-distance Classics. First run as the King Edward VII Stakes in 1926 and now restricted to three-year-old colts and geldings, that last three winners, Japan, Pyledriver and Alenquer, have all gone on to Group 1 success.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes (Handicap)
Five furlongs, Three Year Olds The final race on Friday was among six prizes added to the Royal Ascot race programme in 2020. A five-furlong sprint for three-year-olds, Her Majesty The Queen graciously consented to the race name, which recognises the Monarchy’s official Scottish residence. A race with similar conditions used to be run regularly on the Saturday Heath Day card and featured as part of the full Royal Ascot programme in 2002 and 2003 as the Balmoral Handicap. Upon its return in 2020, it was won by Art Power who went on to win a Group 3 at Naas before contesting the major Group 1 sprints later in the season. the Royal Ascot Insider

Race Summary: Summar This race looks tailor-made for EHRAZ judged on his strong-finishing effort last time and bearing in mind that he’s already a C&D winner. He should be capable of further progress and is taken to reverse Newbury placings with Tiber Flow, who still warrants respect on form but needs to prove he’s effective effecti in headgear (he now goes in first-time cheekpieces). Second choice is Go Bears Go, who has a good record here and whose Sandy Lane effort can be marked up. Perfect Power (third choice) holds major claims returned to sprinting, El Caballo is progressing well, Twilight Jet recorded a big figure on his reappearance and Slipstream is an intriguing US raider.

Race Summary: Summar CEMHAAN (nap) is a major difficulty but he keeps on winning regardless and leave lea s the strong impression that he has a good deal more to give gi . He took a valuable 1m6f race on his latest start but the style st of his 1m4f win the time before suggests that this drop back in trip can help him to register another win. The chief threat looks to be Trawlerman, on just his second start since last season’s Sandown Classic Trial. Contact has been in storming form this season and Candleford could improve on this seasonal debut, while Hughie Morrison has such a superb record in this race that his Stay Sta Well must also be on the shortlist. Feature Race Analysis It looks to be a fascinating renewal of this year’s Coronation Stakes, with John and Thady Gosden finally giving the unbeaten Inspiral the greenlight after her impressive juvenile campaign. The smart filly had Cachet three lengths behind in the Fillies Mile at Newmarket, but she has race fitness on her side following an impressive victory in the 1000 Guineas, with Prosperous Voyage just a neck behind. The trio of Sandrine, Discoveries and Guineas favourite Tenebrism were all behind George Boughey’s filly at Newmarket so will have a bit to find, while Mangoustine got the better of Cachet in a Group 1 in France. With no Godolphin horse in the race, William Buick gets the leg up on the in-form Spendarella who has been on a roll on home soil in America and Jose Ortiz will be hoping to land the spoils with Pizza Bianca, the other American-trained horse in the 12-strong field. Rolling The Dice, Honey Girl and the very lightly-raced Grande Dame all have a bit to find on the official figures but all could be in with an each-way chance.

The Coronation Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) - continued
Race Summary: Summar This is a rive ri ting Coronation Stakes despite the absence of Homeless Songs, who was spectacular in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Inspiral lacks recent match practice but she was flawless fla as a 2yo and commands major respect on her belated reappearance. However, there are several plausible alternative alternati s at bigger odds, notably tabl DISCOVERIES who is an ideal candidate judged tably on breeding and should leave lea her 1,000 Guineas effort behind her. From a punting perspective ecti , ective the second choice is Prosperous Voyage who appears to have ha a major race in her. Cachet is firmly firml in the mix, while French raider Mangoustine and US fillies Spendarella and Pizza Bianca add strong international flavo fla ur to an engrossing line-up. Race Summary: Summar The Group 1 Falmouth Stakes entry HEREDIA did very well to maintain her unbeaten record at York last time, having ha found trouble in running, and she can make it 4-4 with the step up to 1m likely el to be a plus. Second choice, at a much bigger price, is No Nay ely Na Nicki who made some late headway in a Listed race at York last month and could relish this big-field scenario over a stiff, straight mile. The well-bred Invigilate In is next on the list, ahead of her Nottingham conqueror Washraa, with Gatecrasher Girl and Persist others ot who are open to further improvement. Crenelle isn’t written writ off, while last-time-out Doncaster winner Fresh Hope represents Charlie Fellowes and Hayley Ha Turner who won this in 2019 and 2020. Reserves At Roya Ro l Ascot The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception. This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity opportunit to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage. Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any an time up to 1.00pm the t day before bef t race. the The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage. Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage. In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners. Today’s race with a reserve running is The Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes (Class 2 Handicap) SWAYZE

Race Summary: Summar US speedster Ruthin should ensure this is run at a breakneck pace and her central draw dra will gi her rider options. It won’t be easy trying to make all in this field though and her prominence give in the betting looks more a reflection of her trainer’s record at the meeting rather than her being a handicap blot. The British challenge is led by Korker, er who was so impressive er, essi at York and essive could still develop into a Group performer. He is high on the list for last year’s winning yard, with the thriving thri Sterling Knight, Shamlaan and Love Lo s Me Likearock also firmly firml in the picture. The prize may ma be going to Ireland courtesy of LADIES CHURCH, though. She had useful 2yo form, including on fast ground, and was second on her reappearance when the smart favo fa urite got first run on her. She is a strong trave tra ller who should relish an end-to-end gallop off which to challenge. Of those at big prices, Bond Chairman is the most intriguing. Race Predictor: SHAMLAAN LADIES CHURCH
