A very warm welcome to all our annual badgeholders on oddschecker Grand National Trial day.

The oddschecker Grand National Trial is always a fantastic, contest. It is thirty one years ago since Haydock Park was blanketed in snow and Philip Arkwright, our Clerk of the Course then, had the foresight to change the great race to Kempton Park on the same day. It was won by subsequent Gold Cup winner Master Oats Other notable winners include Red Rum fifty years ago, Twin Oaks (whom our winning connections room is named after) and the hugely popular Bristol De Mai three years ago Today’s victor has their chance to add to the illustrious roll call It is wonderful to see Royale Pagaille once again appearing at Haydock Park in the great race, bidding to add to his Betfair Chase tally. His inflated handicap mark puts several out of the weights, but it is some task to carry top weight in this race.

The supporting card is abounding with impermeable quality One of our supporting races is The Victor Ludorum Juvenile Hurdle, which usually features a decent youngster. Frodon has previously took the two-mile contest, which unusually is not named after a person, but it is in fact Latin for “the winner of the games”.

The WKD Rendlesham Hurdle is always a notable pre-cursor to The Stayers Hurdle at Cheltenham, whilst class 1 status is afforded to both our staying novice hurdle and our opening mares contest which has been transferred from Warwick last week Our closing contest sees some old favourites in a Hunters’ Steeplechase.

Our reciprocal list has been finalised It is a veritable smorgasbord of high quality and eclecticism, comprising of over seventy five days at the majority of racecourses across the land. In coming weeks, we have visits to Kempton Park and Kelso Further information is available on the website or in the Annual Members Room An addition is Musselburgh tomorrow, who have generously given an additional day following their abandonment on 3rd January

As with every fixture this year, an exclusive member’s bar area for refreshments is available, together with reserved seating and panoramic views from two private boxes, high up in the grandstand.

I wish you an enjoyable and successful days racing.

It looked unlikelythat the strong-travelling JIPCOTwould be plying his trade over 3m after placing in the Imperial Cup last spring, but he has been transformed since having wind surgery after a disappointing starttothe season, proving betterthan everfortackling longertrips. This should be run to suit and he can take this under an ultra-patient ride. There are a host of promising staying types among the rest, notably Nab Wood tackling 3m for the first time and the improving Kilbarry Hill.

It could be worth chancing WHISTLEINTHEDARK, who took a big step back in the right direction when second on first crack in veterans’ company at Warwick last week and he’s potentially very well treated if building on that. VETS SCREEN POLICY

We have agreed with our vets that the screen should be erected, whenever a horse requires veterinary treatment on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
