Welcome to the Betfair Ascot Chase Raceday.

We are pleased to offer more than £450,000 of prize money today including £175,000 in the feature race, the Grade 1 Betfair Ascot Chase. It looks like another quality renewal with Britain’s leading Cheltenham Gold Cup hope, L’Homme Presse, bidding to turn the tables on Ascot stalwart Pic D’Orhy who provided Paul Nicholls with a fifth winner in the race last year

Pic D’Orhy aims to become the first back-to-back victor since Riverside Theatre in 2012 while there is an interesting Irish challenge in the shape of Corbetts Cross and Blue Lord.

We are hugely grateful to Betfair for their continued support of this Grade 1 contest, with their sponsorship now extending to a 17th year. Betfair also sponsor five other races on the card including the £100,000 Betfair Swinley Handicap Chase, featuring last year’s winner Threeunderthrufive and Ascot specialist Victtorino.

We have donated the race sponsorship of the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase to the Ebony Horse Club and are delighted to welcome some of their students to Ascot today. The Ebony Horse Club does such important work in the community in south London, helping hundreds of young people take the reins by connecting them with horses and developing key life skills.

Everyone at Ascot was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Joe Saumarez Smith earlier this week. After a successful career in technology and the media, Joe became a director of the British Horseracing Authority in 2014 and was subsequently appointed Chair of the BHA from June 2022, a position he held until last month when he stepped down due to ill health. He was the driving force behind many important initiatives and was an outstanding international ambassador for British racing. We pass on our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at this time.

Our next raceday, the final Jumps meeting of the season at Ascot, is the ever-popular Spring Family Raceday on Sunday 30th March. We hope to welcome you and your families back to Ascot then.

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races

The Best Odds On The Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle Race

Today’s opener is a handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards rated from 0-125 and is run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms, a horse rated 125 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 120

PAGES 20-21

2nd Race 1.50pm

The Ebony Horse Club Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase (Grade 2)

Our first of two graded races, this Grade 2 race is a high-class contest and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch horses lining up, and possibly some Cheltenham Festival contenders. Initially the weights in this three mile steeple chase for novices aged five and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 3lb for winners of a Class 2 weight-for-age or Class 1 handicap chase to 5lb for victory in a Class 1 weight-for-age chase.

PAGES 24-26

3rd Race 2.25pm

The Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle Race

This handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards is run over two miles and about three furlongs. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

PAGES 30-32

4th Race 3.00pm

The Betfair Swinley Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)

Premier handicaps are the best handicaps on offer and can only be bettered by graded contests Many of the five-year-olds and upwards in this three mile chase will be using this race as a springboard to possibly even better things. Even though it’s called a premium handicap, it’s still a handicap meaning that the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official rating. There is no handicap limit in this race which usually makes it ultra-competitive

PAGES 38-39

5th Race 3.37pm

The Betfair Ascot Chase (Grade 1)

The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and five furlongs Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football - quite simply there is no higher level, so these races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race so the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex.

6th Race 4.10pm

The Betfair Racing Podcasts Novices’ Hurdle Race

Our penultimate race is for novices These tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular contest is a novices’ hurdle for horses aged five and upwards, run over two miles and about three furlongs

PAGES 50-51

7th Race 4.45pm

The Betfair Mares’ Open National Hunt Flat Race

Our finale is a National Hunt Flat Race - or ‘bumper’, as they are more commonly referred to - this is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat, over hurdles or in steeple chases (except for point-to-points), they are not eligible to enter This particular contest is restricted to fillies and mares aged four to six.

22. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo

If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

TIMEFORM SUMMARY

DUBROVNIK HARRY clearly hasn’t been straightforward to train but he was third in a better handicap than this on his last run over hurdles and if he can recapture that form following a short-break, so he’s more than capable of winning a race of this nature. The reappearing Bective Abbey is totally unexposed tackling 3 miles for the first time on handicap debut, while Bertie B was unsuited by the run of the race last time and could outrun his odds now stepped up in trip.

Today we are delighted to welcome students from the Ebony Horse Club (EHC) to enjoy a day’s racing with us in one of our corporate boxes.

EHC has nine horses, a floodlit arena and two turnout paddocks - but it is no ordinary stables – it is a youth club with horses. The charity’s President, Her Majesty Queen Camilla, opened its Brixton centre in South London in 2011. Nestling between the railway line and the tower blocks, the charity now welcomes 180 inner-city children and teenagers every week to experience the transformative benefits of horse riding on their doorstep

EHC is making equestrianism accessible in the full sense of the term. 93% of the young riders come from low-income backgrounds and it believes that young people should not be restricted in achieving their full potential by their environment. Through a programme of riding, stable management and youth work activities, the charity encourages students to set their sights high and to develop key life skills such as empathy, responsibility and teamwork.

EHC places a keen focus on breaking cycles of poverty and ensuring its young people can move into meaningful employment, further education or apprenticeships. EHC is now ready for the next adventure! It is building a brand-new centre in the neighbouring

of Southwark,

the

Peninsular It’s an ambitious project but EHC is excited to be bringing all that it has learned in Brixton to a new community.

The new centre will provide opportunities for 200 more youngsters a year to experience the joy of horses in a safe and structured environment. EHC has developed a successful model that encourages resourcefulness and resilience which enables young people to thrive. Thanks to the generosity of the equine community, EHC can broaden its horizons with residential and day trips, these can include visits to racecourses and equine events or just a chance to experience the countryside.

In recognition of the charity’s work, we have donated race naming rights for “The Ebony Horse Club Reynoldstown Novices’ Steeple Chase” at 1.50pm.

SUMMARY

Plenty to consider but the eye is drawn to JOYEUX MACHIN. Having offered little in a brace of outings over 2m upon joining Dan Skelton, he shaped with abundant promise upped in trip at Wetherby last time. With Harry Skelton on for the first time, a big run is surely forthcoming. Altobelli reacted well to cheekpieces when successful over C&D last time and his revised mark is perfectly fair, while Country Park is also considered at longer odds on his handicap debut.

Plenty are in with a shout but Venetia Williams’ VICTTORINO is building up an impressive record round here so is fancied to make light of a 3lb rise for his Silver Cup victory and bag a fourth C&D success. The upwardly-mobile Hasthing rates a big danger though in his hat-trick bid, while last year’s winner Threeunderthrufive and resurgent Newbury runner-up Wiseguy can also have a say. A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants.

For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have proven to reduce fallers by 11% compared to the traditional birch hurdles while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.

More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses

During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty

generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals

There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

TIMEFORM SUMMARY

With the highly promising Just A Rose ruled out, this now looks pretty open. CREST OF FORTUNE hasn’t done a great deal wrong in his three starts over hurdles to date and left the strong impression that this step back up in trip would be in his favour when again finding just one too good at Exeter on New Year’s Day. Anthony Honeyball’s charge gets the nod ahead of First Confession and Kingston Pride, both of whom looked promising prior to low-key performances in graded company last time.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
