RACE DESCRIPTIONS

3.00 THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

3.30 THE GEORGE CRAWFORD LEGACY TRUST HANDICAP CHASE

2.00 THE AGRICULTURE AND EQUINE COURSES AT SRUC MAIDEN HURDLE RACE

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today

2.30 THE RACING TV PROFITS RETURNED TO RACING MARES’ MAIDEN HURDLE RACE

This is another maiden race, meaning that the horses running today have yet to win a race. Many of the fillies and mares aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and four furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

This is a two mile, about four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

4.00 THE VISIT RACINGTV.COM NOVICES’ LIMITED HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

This is a two mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 95 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

4.30 THE WATCH RACING TV NOW HANDICAP CHASE

This two miles, seven and a half furlong handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage

5.00 THE 100% RACING TV PROFITS BACK TO RACING CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

The final race this afternoon is a one mile, seven furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-100. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

This certainly isn’t the strongest race for the grade, and LOOKING SPLENDID has shown enough in handicaps over this sort of distance to suggest he is more than capable of winning this Coral Blue performed with plenty of credit in a stronger race over C&D two weeks ago, so he is a danger, as is handicap-debutant Good Company who could be better than what he’s shown in novice company.

MILAJESS is a long-standing maiden but she did bump into a handicap blot at Sedgefield last week and this might finally be her day. Heart Above was at the top of his game when last seen in November and heads the dangers along with Trailblazer Handicap-newcomer King Ulanda would also be of interest if the betting vibes are strong.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
