Aintree Racecard - Saturday 4th December

Page 1

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Becher Chase Day, our final race meeting of the year at Aintree. We have a bumper card on offer today with eight races, including the iconic Unibet Becher Chase and the competitive Unibet Many Clouds Chase. We are delighted to stage the rescheduled Unibet Houghton Mares’ Chase, that was due to be run at Carlisle last Sunday, and it looks to be an intriguing race. The Unibet Becher Chase is our second chance to see a race over the famous Grand National fences this season, and it is looking set to be a brilliant renewal. Last year’s race was won in fine style by the popular grey, Vieux Lion Rouge and he is ready to take his chance again today. We wish all connections with runners here today the very best of luck. Over recent years, the Unibet Many Clouds Chase has attracted fantastic fields, and today’s Grade 2 contest features some of the sport’s biggest stars including 2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Native River for the in-form Tizzard Team and dual Randox Grand National Winner, Tiger Roll, lining up at 2.05pm today. It is certainly going to be a fascinating race for all of us to enjoy. As ever, we would like to thank our partner today, Unibet who have sponsored all eight races on the card. We thank them for their continued support and wish them and their guests a wonderful day. We would like to invite you all to join us for a minute’s silence today before the first race, as we remember 12 year old Ava White who sadly lost her life in Liverpool last week. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and the City through this very difficult time. We thank you for your co-operation. This has been a challenging year for us all, but we would like to thank you for your continued support as racegoers, partners, owners, horsemen and fans of our sport. We were treated to a historic 2020 Randox Grand National thanks to Rachael Blackmore and Minella Times, as well as brilliant racing throughout all our racedays. A huge highlight for us was being able to open our gates to you once again and welcome you back to this iconic venue. We wish you all a Merry Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you back here in the New Year for our opening day of the Randox Grand National Festival, Liverpool’s NHS Day on Thursday 7th April 2022.

PLAY SMARTER

With some strong bumper form behind him, MIGHT I looked useful when quickening clear of his rivals at Newton Abbot in October and he can leave the bare form of that well behind. There’s depth to this though, with Name In Lights open to progress, while six-figure point recruit Constitution Hill demands a second look.

It’s really important that racing creates an inclusive environment where everyone taking part can be themselves. No one should judge anyone for who they are.

PLAY SMARTER

Unsurprisingly claims can be made for many in a cracking mares’ handicap and it may pay to side with KISSESFORKATIE. It’s likely her first start for 12 months was needed at Lingfield in November, and having looked unlucky not to win off this mark on her second start last term, all looks set fair for a big run. Shirocco’s Dream, last year’s winner Emmpressive Lady and Fable head up the dangers.

Gary Moore has a good record in this contest and his runner NATURALLY HIGH, who ran to a useful on the level in France, looks the one to beat after easily opening his hurdling account at Lingfield. Fellow ex-French recruit Happy And Fine appeals as the one to give him most to do starting out in handicaps off a good mark. City Derby and Colden’s Dream both figure on the shortlist too in an interesting handicap.

Harry Skelton was his usual positive self aboard the 2/1 favourite in last years renewal. He set a blistering pace that his rivals quite simply couldn’t live with and despite a sketchy jump at the last he was an impressive winner. The Tizzard trained Eldorado Allen couldn’t live with the ferocious gallop and both he and GA Law were forced into jumping errors that eventually cost them any chance in the finish. Second favourite Hitman was keen early on under Harry Cobden and was the only other runner who could go the gallop. He stayed on nicely but had given himself too much ground to make up.

ALL WINNERS OF THIS GRADE 1 HAVE GONE ON TO BE RATED AT LEAST 155 - VERY HIGH CLASS.

KEY CONTENDERS THIRD TIME LUCKI Already firmly in the picture for this years Arkle, Third Time Lucki should take all the beating for the Skeltons, who won this race last year. He’s 3lb clear of his nearest rival on ratings and a clear round should see him win.

HHHHH EDWARDSTONE A second season Novice, Edwardstone has the most experience in the field but that comes at a cost as no seven-year-old has won this race in the last 10 years. He won well at Warwick on his last start and a similar performance would see him go close.

HHHH MINELLA DRAMA Donald McCains six-year-old has taken a real step forward over fences after putting up some good performances over hurdles. He was second to War Lord but if his jumping can improve, he may reverse that form.

PLAY SMARTER

THIRD TIME LUCKI has been an impressive winner of his 2 chase starts at Cheltenham and is fancied to provide Dan and Harry Skelton with back-to-back wins in this contest. Paul Nicholls has a record 7 wins in this so it’s interesting that he fast tracks Il Ridoto to Grade 1 company after his Newbury handicap success last week and he’s feared most ahead of Edwardstone in a good renewal.

An ultra competitive renewal of this race, with 2019 winner, Native River, back as an 11-year-old to confirm he still has what it takes at top level. Protektorat went down as an unlucky loser in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham 3 weeks ago, after flying late down the home straight. The extra trip could work in his favour today. Previous Cheltenham Festival winners Imperial Aura and Simply The Betts match up again, with the latter coming out on top the last time these two superstars met as Novices’. James Bowen takes the mount on Tiger Roll, a two-time Grand National winner here in 2018 and 2019, and, although this trip might be on the short side, he is always hard to oppose. Sam Brown, The Two Amigos and Wishing And Hoping make up the 8-Strong field.

This race is named in honour of Many Clouds after his victory in 2016. National Hunt racing by nature breeds heroes, equine and human, who capture a special place in the public’s heart. The legacy of 2015 Grand National winner Many Clouds continues to live on as racing returns to the scene of his greatest triumph. Trevor Hemmings’ third winner of the Grand National (following Hedgehunter and Ballabriggs) was foaled in 2007, by Cloudings out of Bobbing Back. He was trained by Oliver Sherwood and ridden by Leighton Aspell, who partnered him in all his 27 career starts. He won 12 races worth £927,732 in prize money, completing two Grand Nationals and winning the 2014 Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury - the only horse to have won both big races in the same season. He was a horse so hugely and warmly acclaimed that practically the whole population of Lambourn, where he was trained, turned out to welcome him home after his outstanding Aintree victory under 11st 9lb. His honesty and battling determination were the qualities that made people love him, and these attributes were never displayed more vividly than in his final race, Cheltenham’s Cotswold Chase, in January 2017. That day, Many Clouds literally grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat when fighting back in a duel up the famous hill to overcome the brilliant Thistlecrack - but tragically he subsequently passed away. He is immortalised in Grand National history, not only on the boards of previous winners, but in the hearts of the public.

Politologue really is one of racings favourites and last year he made it two wins in this race. His first came back in 2017 and to win it again three years later shows just what a brave and talented horse he is for Paul Nicholls and connections. He became only the third nine-yearold in the last 10 years to win the race when beating stable mate Greaneteen. Harry Skelton kept it simple from the front and made use of his excellent jumping to come home a comfortable seven length winner. Rouge Vif made a mistake two out when ultimately held and Greaneteen could only pick up the pieces back in second.

TINGLE CREEK won three renewals of the Sandown Pattern Chase, the predecessor to this race, breaking the track record twice in the process. He was widely renowned as the best jumper of a fence of all time and that is why he lends his name to this great race.

KEY CONTENDERS CHACUN POUR SOI Wille Mullins pride and joy, Chacun Pour Soi has done everything but win at the festival and if he can replicate his final run last year, he is going to take all the beating. A two-mile specialist, the only question mark would be fitness.

HHHHH NUBE NEGRA Despite beating Chacun at Cheltenham, Nube Negra was put back in his place after finishing 25 lengths behind him at Punchestown. The season may well have caught up on him and his reappearance at Cheltenham was electric. It should be a cracking match between the two.

HHHH GREANETEEN With no Politologue, Nicholls hopes rest on last years Celebration Chase winner. He could only manage fourth on reappearance but was giving away a lot of weight and is entitled to come on for that run. He finished third last year but if he can continue that upward curve, he should be right there come the line.

With the tongue strap and cheekpieces applied, Conor O’Farrell guided his mount through the field to land the key trial for the Randox Grand National. Held up towards the rear, the 11-year-old always jumped soundly throughout the race, picking off rivals one-by-one. Close up 3 fences from home, David Pipe’s inmate challenged for the lead 2 out, before putting his rivals to the sword to go clear on the run in. A gutsy final effort up the straight saw him run out a very convincing winner by an astonishing 24 lengths, with Kimberlite Candy finishing in the same place as 2020 in second, and joint-favourite Le Breuil back in third.

KEY CONTENDERS VIEUX LION ROUGE This 12-year-old now bids to win this contest for the third time, after taking this race by storm last year, being sent off at 12/1. Despite a poor season return at Chepstow, this should be a lot more to his tune and see him back to his best. David Pipe’s horse seems to love the Becher Chase and he will take all the beating once again, albeit 5lb higher in the handicap this year.

HHHHH

SNOW LEOPARDESS With placed effort in Graded company last season, Snow Leopardess looks a horse with vast potential this season. She scored impressively on seasonal reapperance at Bangor and looks to play a key part in this if taking to the larger fences. Although she arrives on a career high mark of 140, she is right towards the top of the market, with an excellent jockey booking of Aidan Coleman to aid her cause.

CHRIS’S DREAM

HHHH

Rated 162 and a huge weight to defy, Chris’s Dream is still in with a great chance of taking home the prize money. Henry De Bromhead’s gelding was travelling well before he blundered and unseated Darragh O’Keeffe late on in the Grand National, so it would be no suprise for another big effort today. This 9-year-old has some cracking form in his locker, including a Grade 2 win at Gowran Park, and if the ground is soft enough, he will be a major player.

HHHH

KIMBERLITE CANDY

CHECKITOUT

Sent off at 14/1 for this race last year, Tom Lacey’s horse ran with a lot of promise into second for the second year running. He hasn’t been seen since pulling up in the Grand National earlier in the year but, this horse has proved time and time again that he goes well fresh. Making his seasonal debut today 3lb better off than last year, this 9-year-old looks to have leading claims once again, with Jonathan Burke in the saddle.

With Nigel Twiston-Davies being the leading trainer in this contest, it would be rude to not give his horse a mention. This 7-year-old was a dual-winner last season over the three-mile trip and his comeback run behind Larry in the Grade 3 Bateaux London Gold Cup Handicap Chase would give him an each-way chance. A 4lb hike in the weights is a slight concern but he is an interesting contender nevertheless.

ELHAM VALLEY has the distinction of being the only horse to have inflicted defeat on Hudson de Grugy at Sandown, and he looks capable of winning a race of this nature judged on his fine effort at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Aintree Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Parade Ring Access In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.

Photography Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not permitted anywhere in the Parade Ring or Winner’s Enclosure areas, or anywhere in the close vicinity of horses.
