FACTS & STATS THE SSS SUPER ALLOYS MANIFESTO NOVICES’ CHASE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION
Named after Manifesto, a horse who ran in eight Grand National’s between 1895 and 1904, this race was first staged in 2009. A Grade 1, this race often features horses who ran previously in the Arkle and the Marsh Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Like Manifesto, who won two Grand National’s, horses need to be tough at the finish to win this race, which has now been the opening race at the meeting for six years, and was handed Grade 1 status after just three runnings.

PROTEKTORAT Breaking the trend of being in the top 3 of the betting, the Dan Skelton-trained Protektorat put a good field to the sword in excellent fashion. Given a superb ride from Harry Skelton, the six-year-old tracked the leaders before making headway to go third 3 out. Despite edging out to his right over 2 out, he soon led approaching the last and kept on well to the line to score impressively by 3¾ lengths. The Emmet Mullinstrained The Shunter booked second place, while Hitman was just a neck behind in third.
