QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS DAY FOREWORD FROM ROD STREET This year marks the tenth running of QIPCO British Champions Day, following the inaugural event which took place in 2011. The day could not have got off to a better start with the imperious Frankel wowing the 30,000 strong crowd on course and the millions more watching from home. Since then, it has established itself as one of the great days in the international racing calendar and it is hard to believe that prior to its inception, Britain lacked an end-ofseason Flat racing finale to rival that of other racing jurisdictions. Now, alongside Ascot Racecourse and with our sponsors QIPCO, we are proud to host an established, world-class event that has consistently attracted the world’s best horses and jockeys. Over the years at QIPCO British Champions Day and throughout the running of QIPCO British Champions Series, we have witnessed a decade of champions who have lit up the racetrack and etched their names in sporting history. In the early years, Cirrus des Aigles proved a popular crowd favourite and was followed by other superlative French victors including Charm Spirit, Solow and Almanzor. Whilst Frankel put up a world’s best performance on the day in 2012, earning him a rating of 140 which has never been bettered, his progeny Cracksman did something that he never achieved by becoming the first horse to win the same race twice at Champions Day when landing the QIPCO Champion Stakes in 2017 and 2018. Roaring Lion, Minding and Magical are some of the other superstar horses to have set our hearts racing. The Series itself this year has been just as compelling, with Battaash and Stradivarius both landing back-to-back victories in their respective race categories. The talented Ghaiyyath has emerged as the world’s top rated horse this year following stunning victories in three Series races including the Coral-Eclipse when he lowered the colours of Enable. She herself made history with a third King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes in July and has now been retired to stud following a truly dazzling career.

1

From a racing perspective, this year’s day looks set to maintain those lofty standards with racing superstars at every turn. However, unfortunately it will also be very different with the event taking place behind closed doors following restrictions imposed by Government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, we are proud that the day remains the most valuable raceday in Britain again this year, with the QIPCO Champion Stakes the richest race run in 2020. As ever, we remain incredibly grateful to our sponsors QIPCO, who have been our partners from the start, for their continued support, particularly in these extraordinary times. We also extend our thanks to the owners and trainers who continue to support the day. 2020 has been a year that many of us would like to forget but we are looking forward to bringing you unforgettable sporting action to enjoy from the comfort of your home with ITV, Racing TV and Sky Sports Racing and we look forward to welcoming you back to QIPCO British Champions Day in 2021.

“Our Zoustar fillies are absolutely gorgeous and we couldn’t be happier. They have everything you want; tremendous presence, correct, incredibly well-balanced with a lovely way of moving and a strong backend and hindleg.” Sara Cumani, Fittocks Stud

PAT SMULLEN TRIBUTE Racing’s community came together in shared sadness last month at the death of Pat Smullen, aged just 43. An outstanding jockey and an upstanding gentleman, he rode 1,892 winners in Britain and Ireland, including 11 Classics and a host of other worldwide Group One prizes. From the sadness of his passing, a tapestry of moving tributes emerged, telling of his qualities both in and out of the saddle. One of Smullen’s most successful contemporaries, Kieren Fallon, referred to one of Smullen’s most celebrated successes on the track, at Epsom in 2016. “I just want to remember him winning the Derby on Harzand,” he said. “Everyone was saying ‘He is a lovely guy’, but they were looking for something different – I said to one of the press boys ‘He loves his tractors, so write about that!’. “I remember going into the weighing room the next day, we were together and he had that cheeky smile on his face shaking his head at me – I can still see him now shaking his head and smiling at me!” Ireland’s nine-time Champion Jockey between 2000 and 2016, Smullen forged an enduring partnership with Dermot Weld, having taken over the role as stable jockey from Mick Kinane in 1999. Smullen was crowned Ireland’s champion for the first time the following year. Big-race victories in Ireland and around the world came regularly throughout his career, including four times on QIPCO British Champions Day itself. Forgotten Rules, successful in the 2014 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup, was luckless in his bid to win the race again the following year, finding his path blocked more than once. But rather than dwell upon that misfortune, Smullen came back out of the weighing room and gave Fascinating Rock a confident ride to take the QIPCO Champion Stakes, holding his line as the field fanned across the straight and getting first run on Found. However, it was the victory of Rite Of Passage in the 2012 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup that perhaps saw Smullen at his assured best. Absent from the racecourse for 510 days with a tendon injury, the 2010 Gold Cup winner was returning to action in soft ground and with questions to answer over both his physical and mental sharpness. But after a slow start, having given some trouble at the starting stalls, Smullen hacked Rite Of Passage around at the back, humouring him on his return. Encouragement turned to coercion as he guided him through the field as others gave way, sticking fast to the far rail. Switched off the rail for a final thrust, the pair flew past Aiken to win by a neck. 7

Typically deflecting praise for his ride, Smullen hailed “a remarkable performance from horse and trainer”, before going on to illustrate the detail of race-riding and horsemanship that his career was built upon. “The plan was to hunt away, get him into a rhythm and let him warm into the race,” he went on. “As soon as we came out of Swinley Bottom and met the rising ground, he was on the bridle again for me, so I was confident that he was running a huge race. “The gap came up the inside in the straight. You have to give a horse like him every chance so I went the shortest way but when you do that you’re playing with fire and I was lucky.” Although one of his most fondly remembered rides, it was not one typical of Smullen’s measured approach. Never one for letting his emotions get the better of him, he preferred to rely on a consistent outlook towards race-riding, using his sense of pace, his racing brain and his excellent hands to position his mount optimally, rather than risk unnecessary hard-luck stories. Smullen’s career was brought to a premature end by a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, but rather than dwell or despair, he began a new race, battling his illness while at the same time working relentlessly to raise both awareness and much-needed funds to help others fighting the same disease. He threw himself into the organisation of the Pat Smullen Champions Race for Cancer Trials Ireland, staged at the Curragh on the second day of Irish Champions Weekend, an event that ultimately raised €2.5million. On a day of intense competition and enjoyable celebration, we will remember Pat Smullen and think of his family and friends at a meeting that was created to celebrate all that is best about our sport – for that, in all respects, is exactly what he was.

Official BHA Rating: The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE PARADE RING

Coat looks sleek and shiny Horse looks relaxed

Muscle definition on the shoulders and hindquarters

Horses will usually arrive in the Parade Ring around 15 to 20 minutes before the start time of the race. They will parade until roughly five minutes before the start of the race, at which point the bell will ring and the jockeys will mount. What to look out for? There is no exact science but here are some of the things to look out for if you’re trying to select a horse.

What does its coat look like? Look for a sleek, shiny coat which is a sign of good health.

Does your horse look fit? Clear muscle definition on its shoulders and over its hindquarters all suggest a horse that is fit and healthy. It should not carry too much ‘condition’ or extra weight and its walk should be athletic.

Is your horse relaxed? The big occasion can get to some horses. If it is sweating before it has left the Parade Ring or jig-jogging around, it might be expending too much energy before it has even run in the race.

THE QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS LONG DISTANCE CUP

HISTORY OF THE RACE

Established in 1873 as the Jockey Club Cup, this race was run at Newmarket until 2011, when it was moved to Ascot and renamed the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup.

The variety of contests in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance category vary in distance from the one mile and six furlongs (2,800m) of Doncaster's Pertemps St Leger to the two and a half miles (4,000m) of the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. The intermediate two-mile distance of the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup therefore provides the perfect distance for the category finale. There have been some thrilling finishes in recent years – in 2016 Sheikhzayedroad came out the victor in a four-way photo finish, beating subsequent 2017 winner Order Of St George, who ground out his win in his customary battling style. In 2018, the staying king and QIPCO British Champions Series stalwart, Stradivarius rounded off a memorable campaign to win this race. In 2019 he was, however, overturned by Kew Gardens for Aidan O'Brien by the smallest of margins in a thrilling battle all the way to the line.

ONES TO WATCH

STRADIVARIUS

Sex: Horse Colour: Chestnut Age: 6 Trainer: John Gosden Owner: Mr B. E. Nielsen Sire-Dam: Sea The Stars (IRE) - Private Life (FR) Breeder: Bjorn Nielsen

Info: The supreme stayer has looked better than ever this term, securing a third triumph in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot (by ten lengths with Frankie Dettori motionless) before gaining a record fourth triumph in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup. However, recent races have seen him compete against Europe's best over middledistance trips, most recently in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Back up in trip today, he is seeking his 14th QIPCO British Champions Series win.

SPANISH MISSION

Sex: Colt Colour: Bay Age: 4 Trainer: Andrew Balding Owner: Team Valor Llc & Gary Barber Sire-Dam: Noble Mission – Limonar (IRE) Breeder: St Elias Stables LLC Info: Staying races have been difficult to secure over recent years with Stradivarius’ dominance, however when an opportunity arises you have to take it – that’s exactly what Spanish Mission did. Since changing trainer midway through the season, Spanish Mission has looked highly progressive with a win in the Chester Stakes first time out for Andrew Balding. Just 22 days later he secured the bet365 Doncaster Cup, and a first Series win. The QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup looks to be a competitive affair, and Spanish Mission is certainly not one to discount.

SEARCH FOR A SONG

Sex: Filly Colour: Chestnut Age: 4 Trainer: Dermot Weld Owner: Moyglare Stud Farm Sire-Dam: Galileo (IRE) – Polished Gem (IRE) Breeder: Moyglare Stud Farm Ltd

Info: Dermot Weld has said that Search For A Song isn’t the easiest to train but there is no doubting her ability as last month she became the first back-to-back winner of the Comer Group International Irish St Leger since Vinnie Roe in the early-2000s. Those Group 1 Classic triumphs over 1m6f at The Curragh have hinted that two miles may well be within her compass. Weld knows better than most what is required to win the race, having landed it with Rite Of Passage (2012) and Forgotten Rules (2014).

DERMOT WELD (TRAINER) ON SEARCH FOR A SONG

She’s never raced over further than a mile and six, but she wasn’t stopping at the end of the St Leger and that’s what is giving me the encouragement to have a crack.

THE GOLD CUP

ROYAL ASCOT, 18TH JUNE

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (2M 4F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: STRADIVARIUS (IRE) 4/5F 2nd: Nayef Road (IRE) 11/1 3rd: Cross Counter 7/1 A majestic performance by superstar stayer Stradivarius as he surged ten lengths clear of Nayef Road on the rain-softened ground to scoop a historic third Gold Cup. Only Sagaro and Yeats had previously achieved the feat. Stradivarius cruised to the front before quickening clear and winning with ease. The race was so comfortable the charismatic Dettori could be seen punching the air half a furlong out as the blistering turn of foot put the race to bed in a matter of seconds.

THE AL SHAQAB GOODWOOD CUP GOODWOOD, 28TH JULY

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (2M) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: STRADIVARIUS (IRE) 4/7F 2nd: Nayef Road (IRE) 20/1 3rd: Santiago (IRE) 15/8 Just three days after Enable made history, her stablemate Stradivarius did the same by becoming the first four-time winner of the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, a race first run in 1812. The record looked in peril when he found himself boxed in towards the finish but once in the clear he showed his usual acceleration to lead close home. Nayef Road again chased him home with Santiago, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner, having to settle for third.

THE WEATHERBYS HAMILTON LONSDALE CUP YORK, 21ST AUGUST

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 2) (2M 1/2F) £100,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: ENBIHAAR (IRE) 15/8F 2nd: Stratum 20/1 3rd: Nayef Road (IRE) 7/2 With Stradivarius being given a breather, the door was open for another stayer to take centre stage. Step forward his likeable stablemate, Enbihaar, who stuck on gamely to beat Stratum by three-quarters of a length with the reliable Nayef Road the same distance away in third. Enbihaar was having her first race over two miles however she appeared to relish the new trip before injury led to her premature retirement.

THE bet365 DONCASTER CUP DONCASTER, 11TH SEPTEMBER

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 2) (2M 2F) £80,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: SPANISH MISSION (USA) 6/4F 2nd: Selino 12/1 3rd: The Grand Visir 10/1 Spanish Mission was sent off a well-backed favourite after a decisive success at Chester on his previous start and his supporters had little to worry about. The four-year-old travelled strongly throughout and it was merely a case of how far he would win by when held onto a furlong out. He crossed the line with three lengths to spare over Selino, who had also chased him home at Chester, with The Grand Visir, who set the pace, another four lengths back in third. Revolver, seeking a seventh successive win, was fourth.

THE PERTEMPS ST LEGER DONCASTER, 12TH SEPTEMBER

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 6F) £350,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: GALILEO CHROME (IRE) 4/1 2nd: Berkshire Rocco (FR) 16/1 3rd: Pyledriver 9/2 A fabulous renewal of the oldest Classic with Galileo Chrome edging out Berkshire Rocco by a neck after a great tussle in the final furlong. Pyledriver and Santiago were both a length further back in third and fourth. Tom Marquand, 22, the winning jockey, had been handed the ride just 24 hours earlier after intended rider Shane Crosse had been ruled out. He duly obliged by winning his first Classic. Joseph O’Brien was emulating Harry Wragg, the last person to have ridden and trained a St Leger winner. He completed the double in 1969.

THEQIPCOBRITISHCHAMPIONSSPRINTSTAKES

HISTORY OF THE RACE

The event was established in 1946, and was originally called the Diadem Stakes, named after Diadem, a winner of several of Ascot’s leading races.

The race was given its present name and returned to October in 2011 when it became part of the newly created QIPCO British Champions Day. In 2015, the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes was upgraded from Group 2 to Group 1 status and has since been won by some top-class sprinters. This six-furlong (1,200m) contest provides the grand finale to the seven-race sprint category of the QIPCO British Champions Series. There are three Series races run over five furlongs and four, including today’s contest, over six furlongs. Trainer James Fanshawe has a good record in the race, having won the first renewal under its current guise with Deacon Blues and more recently, with the ever-reliable The Tin Man in 2016. The last three renewals have seen some more surprising winners, firstly with the Dean Ivory-trained Librisa Breeze at odds of 10/1 before Sands Of Mali, under Paul Hanagan for trainer Richard Fahey, gamely held off Harry Angel to win at odds of 28/1 in 2018. In 2019 it was the turn of Donjuan Triumphant, winning at odds of 33/1, the highest priced winner at QIPCO British Champions Day so far.

OXTED

Sex: Gelding Colour: Bay Age: 4 Trainer: Roger Teal Owner: S Piper, T Hirschfeld, D Fish & J Collins Sire-Dam: Mayson – Charlotte Rosina Breeder: Homecroft Wealth Racing Info: Whatever Oxted goes on to do in the future, he is guaranteed a special place in the affections of his trainer, Roger Teal, and regular jockey, Cieren Fallon Jr. He provided the pair with their first Group 1 triumphs when landing the Darley July Cup at Newmarket this summer. It was a decisive success, too, gained after a similarly authoritative win on his comeback. Oxted’s official rating has risen to 120 and, still lightly raced, the four-year-old’s best days may still be to come.

DREAM OF DREAMS

Sex: Gelding Colour: Chestnut Age: 6 Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Owner: Saeed Suhail Sire-Dam: Dream Ahead (USA) – Vasilia Breeder: Prostock Ltd

Info: Nobody could begrudge Dream Of Dreams a big win at Ascot. He finished fast when beaten a head by Blue Point in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at the Royal Meeting in 2019 and it was a similar story this summer when he lost by that margin to Hello Youmzain in the same race. However, he finally and deservedly got his QIPCO British Champions Series account off the mark with a commanding victory in the Betfair Sprint Cup in September. Two previous runs in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint have brought no joy but he looks as good as ever as he bids to change that this year.

He has since thrived on a busy schedule, winning four of his subsequent races and running better than ever last time when beating all bar Dream Of Dreams under regular rider Hollie Doyle in the Betfair Sprint Cup. He went off 25/1 that day but is unlikely to be so underestimated in the betting this time. Another big run seems on the cards.

ROGER TEAL (TRAINER) ON OXTED

He looks amazing and still keeping his coat, which is great. He’s training really well and seems to have that mojo back and we’re really happy with him at the moment.

THE KING'S STAND STAKES ROYAL ASCOT, 16TH JUNE

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (5F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: BATTAASH (IRE) 5/6F 2nd: Equilateral 9/1 3rd: Liberty Beach 4/1 The world’s top sprinter, Battaash, had found Blue Point too strong in the previous two renewals of the King’s Stand, but made no mistake this time. He made all and scored by two-and-a-quarter lengths from his stablemate, Equilateral, who kept on late to grab second from Liberty Beach. Battaash was becoming the first horse since Lochsong to have wins in the Coolmore Nunthorpe, Prix de l’Abbaye and King’s Stand on his CV. The win formed part of a memorable day for jockey Jim Crowley, picking up four winners.

THE COMMONWEALTH CUP ROYAL ASCOT, 19TH JUNE

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (6F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: GOLDEN HORDE (IRE) 5/1 2nd: Kimari (USA) 5/1 3rd: Ventura Rebel 50/1 Golden Horde, who had shown smart form at two, stood out on looks beforehand and was a decisive winner. Quickly up with the pace, he asserted from over a furlong out to win by a length-and-a-half from the American challenger, Kimari – who was finishing an unlucky second at the Royal Meeting for a second year running. Ventura Rebel kept on well to hold off Royal Commando (250/1) for third but the top two in the market, Lope Y Fernandez and Pierre Lapin, never figured.

THE DIAMOND JUBILEE STAKES

ROYAL ASCOT, 20TH JUNE

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (6F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: HELLO YOUMZAIN (FR) 4/1 2nd: Dream Of Dreams (IRE) 8/1 3rd: Sceptical 2/1F Front-running Hello Youmzain rallied tenaciously to claim the spoils. He looked in trouble when the strong-travelling Sceptical headed him but he clawed him back, before then having to repel a traditional late thrust from Dream Of Dreams. The latter found the line coming too soon and went down by a head, just as he had 12 months earlier, with Sceptical another neck further back in third. Hello Youmzain was providing his young jockey Kevin Stott with not only his first Group 1 winner, but also his first Royal Ascot winner.

THE DARLEY JULY CUP NEWMARKET JULY COURSE, 11TH JULY

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (6F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: OXTED 12/1 2nd: Sceptical 18/5 3rd: Golden Horde (IRE) 2/1F A memorable renewal with Oxted emulating his sire, Mayson, and giving Roger Teal and Cieren Fallon Jr. their first Group 1 triumphs. The winner was never far away, racing on the pace with some proven Group 1 winners from the Series already. Late on he stretched clear and won with authority from Sceptical, who had also gone close in the Diamond Jubilee, and Golden Horde, the Commonwealth Cup winner.

THE COOLMORE NUNTHORPE STAKES YORK, 21ST AUGUST

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (5F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: BATTAASH (IRE) 1/2F 2nd: Que Amoro (IRE) 22/1 3rd: Moss Gill (IRE) 22/1 The fastest horse in the world, Battaash, duly delivered, although the slightly slower ground for this renewal meant his own course record would stand for another year. The ground was tacky after rain showers on the Knavesmire presented another challenge. Battaash was swiftly into top gear but had to roll up his sleeves to master the speedy Que Amoro, who made a bold bid close to the rail. Nothing else really got into contention, with course specialist Moss Gill keeping on to grab third place.

THE BETFAIR SPRINT CUP HAYDOCK PARK, 5TH SEPTEMBER

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (6F) £225,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: DREAM OF DREAMS (IRE) 5/2F 2nd: Glen Shiel 25/1 3rd: Golden Horde (IRE) 13/2 A well-deserved first Group 1 success for Dream Of Dreams, whose previous exploits had included two near-misses in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. The six-year-old was always travelling sweetly for the champion jockey Oisin Murphy and kept on well to win by a length-and-a-quarter from the gallant Glen Shiel. Golden Horde was a further neck away in third, having been handy throughout.

HISTORY OF THE RACE

The history of the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes dates back to 1946 when Ascot staged the Princess Royal Stakes for the first time.

In 2008 it was renamed the Pride Stakes and moved to Newmarket, but it returned to Ascot under its current name in 2011. The new race was given a boost in its very first year as it was won by none other than the Investec Oaks and Preis der Diana (German Oaks) winner, Dancing Rain, a dual Classic heroine in her final European start. It was subsequently upgraded to Group 1 status in 2013. Simple Verse was the second British Classic winner to claim the spoils in its short recent history when successful in 2015. Aidan O’Brien won back-to-back renewals with with Hydrangea (2017) and Magical (2018). The latter went on to secure last year’s QIPCO Champion Stakes. Last year the race was won by the John Gosden- trained Star Catcher with Frankie Dettori aboard. Star Catcher was giving owner, Anthony Oppenheimer, his third successive win at QIPCO British Champions Day after Cracksman’s wins in 2017 and 2018.

EVEN SO

Sex: Filly Colour: Bay Age: 3 Trainer: Ger Lyons Owner: Mrs John Magnier & Mrs Paul Shanahan Sire-Dam: Camelot – Breeze Hill (IRE) Breeder: Lynch Bages Info: Even So is bred for middle distances and relished stepping up to a mile-and-a-half for the first time in the Juddmonte Irish Oaks at The Curragh. Always travelling smoothly, she came from off the pace to win at the main expense of Cayenne Pepper and Passion. The daughter of Camelot had made all the running when previously successful at Gowran Park and Naas, so is clearly versatile regarding tactics. She has looked well served by some give underfoot but has also run well on faster going.

DAME MALLIOT

Sex: Filly Colour: Bay Age: 4 Trainer: Ed Vaughan Owner: Mr A. E. Oppenheimer Sire-Dam: Champs Elysees – Stars In Your Eyes Breeder: Hascombe And Valiant Studs Info: The black-and-white silks of owner Anthony Oppenheimer have been carried with distinction at recent QIPCO British Champions Days. Firstly by two-time QIPCO Champion Stakes winner Cracksman and then the winner of this race last year, Star Catcher. Dame Malliot is another horse in the Oppenheimer colours that could continue this rich vein of form, having won two Group 2 races before being placed in Group 1 company on her past two starts. Her third behind Tarnawa and Raabihah in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp last time reads well, and she’d gone close in Germany before that.

WONDERFUL TONIGHT

Sex: Filly Colour: Bay Age: 3 Trainer: David Menuisier Owner: Christopher Wright Sire-Dam: Le Havre (IRE) – Salvation Breeder: S A R L Ecurie La Cauviniere

Info: Wonderful Tonight is peaking at just the right time for QIPCO British Champions Day, putting several other British-trained contenders firmly in their place when landing the Group 1 Qatar Prix de Royallieu at Longchamp last time. That was only her seventh run and she is clearly still on an upward curve. Her trainer already has one eye on next year’s Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for her, so evidently believes there is more to come. She’s yet to win a race in Britain but has only run here twice, all her other outings being in France.

DAVID MENUISIER (TRAINER) ON WONDERFUL TONIGHT

I think a mile four is probably her favourite trip; she won over a mile and six last time because she’s very good.

When invited to put her stamp on the race, the daughter of Galileo eased four-and-a-quarter lengths clear without being fully extended. Trainer Aidan O’Brien said “We're delighted with Love. She was doing everything right all through the winter and the spring.” Cloak Of Spirits clung on to second by a head from Quadrilateral, who kept on after racing freely early on.

She was also providing Frankie Dettori with his first Coronation Stakes winner – the only Group 1 race at Royal Ascot he had not previously won. After the race Dettori said “It has taken 30 years to win all the Group 1s, but I can say that I have really conquered Royal Ascot”. American challenger Sharing ran on to claim second, with Quadrilateral unable to pick up in third.

THE INVESTEC OAKS EPSOM DOWNS, 4TH JULY

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 4F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY

1st: LOVE (IRE) 11/10F 2nd: Ennistymon (IRE) 6/1 3rd: Frankly Darling 7/4 A one-two for Aidan O’Brien in the fillies’ Classic, although in truth this was all about one horse, Love, as she galloped nine lengths clear. Such a wide-margin win looked unlikely three out as she was pushed along having raced in rear, but it was a case of the further the better as she galloped on remorselessly. Ennistymon chased her home without being able to land any kind of blow, while Frankly Darling, the Royal Ascot Ribblesdale winner, plugged on to be a remote third. In total, there were more than 50 lengths between the winner and last, showcasing the dominance of the Ballydoyle filly.

THE TATTERSALLS FALMOUTH STAKES NEWMARKET JULY COURSE, 10TH JULY

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M) £110,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: NAZEEF 9/2 2nd: Billesdon Brook 14/1 3rd: Terebellum (IRE) 5/6F Terebellum was all the rage after her narrow defeat in the Queen Anne but it was her thriving stablemate, Nazeef, who stole the show. Terebellum made the running but was collared by both Nazeef and Billesdon Brook in the closing stages, with the former emerging triumphant by a neck under Jim Crowley. It was her sixth successive win and another string to the bow of owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum who has been enjoying a memorable year across the board at big racing festivals.

THE QATAR NASSAU STAKES GOODWOOD, 30TH JULY

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 2F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: FANCY BLUE (IRE) 11/4 2nd: One Voice (IRE) 20/1 3rd: Nazeef 100/30 Yet another O’Brien winner, but not the one we are used to seeing! This time it was the trainer’s young son, Donnacha, taking the plaudits. His French Oaks winner, Fancy Blue, fended off the Jessica Harrington-trained One Voice, with the prolific Nazeef having to settle for a supporting role. O’Brien had only sent out his first winner five months earlier and was already securing his second Group 1 – his first (and surely not last) in Britain.

THE DARLEY YORKSHIRE OAKS YORK, 20TH AUGUST

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 4F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY

1st: LOVE (IRE) 4/9F 2nd: Alpinista 33/1 3rd: One Voice (IRE) 12/1 It was another case of Love conquers all as the star filly followed up her emphatic wins in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas and Investec Oaks with another runaway success. Never far away, it was simply a case of how far she would win by once Ryan Moore eased her ahead with three furlongs to run. The winning distance this time was five lengths, but might easily have been more. Alpinista was the outsider of the field but stuck on gamely to claim second spot, with One Voice another couple of lengths away in third.

THE QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES (SPONSORED BY QIPCO)

HISTORY OF THE RACE

Long recognised as Europe’s flagship mile race, 1,600m contests come no bigger than this anywhere on the international stage. Since becoming part of QIPCO British Champions Day the race has gone from strength to strength and has seen some mighty performances across the previous nine runnings. Named in honour of The Queen in 1955, the race has a roll of honour packed full of stars, including Brigadier Gerard (1971 & 1972), Known Fact (1980), Dubai Millennium (1999) and the awesome Frankel, who took the contest in 2011 in effortless fashion. In 2016, Minding became the first filly to be successful since Milligram in 1987, a feat which was followed up by Persuasive for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori in 2017. The race already held special memories for Frankie Dettori, having provided him with his first-ever Group 1 victory thanks to Markofdistinction in 1990. Six years later, Mark Of Esteem was the third leg of his ‘Magnificent Seven’, when he won all seven races on that famous Ascot card.

ONES TO WATCH

PALACE PIER

Sex: Colt Colour: Bay Age: 3 Trainer: John Gosden Owner: Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum Sire-Dam: Kingman – Beach Frolic Breeder: Highclere Stud And Floors Farming Info: Five races have yielded five wins for Palace Pier and an increasingly growing reputation. The best three-year-old miler around? Quite possibly. He came of age when outstaying Pinatubo and Wichita in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and followed up with a fluent success in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, when he won at the main expense of Alpine Star. The Kingman colt has shown he can win on ground ranging from good-to-firm and soft and seems certain to take some stopping.

THE REVENANT

Sex: Gelding Colour: Chestnut Age: 5 Trainer: Francis-Henri Graffard Owner: Al Asayl France Sire-Dam: Dubawi (IRE) – Hazel Lavery (IRE) Breeder: Al Asayl Bloodstock Ltd

Info: Charm Sprit (2014) and Solow (2015) have been recent French-trained winners of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO) and The Revenant came close to improving that tally when runner-up to King Of Change 12 months ago. The prolific five-year-old, who has won nine of his 12 races, has been trained with this year’s renewal in mind and will line-up on the back of a reappearance win at Longchamp a fortnight ago. The Dubawi gelding acts well on testing ground but also has wins on good going to his name.

CIRCUS MAXIMUS

Sex: Colt Colour: Bay Age: 4 Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Owner: Flaxman Stables, Mrs Magnier, M Tabor, D Smith Sire-Dam: Galileo (IRE) – Duntle (IRE) Breeder: Flaxman Stables Ireland Ltd Info: Circus Maximus is established as one of the best milers in training and his two previous visits to Ascot have both yielded Group 1 victories. He dug deep to land the St James’s Palace Stakes at the Royal Meeting last year and showed similar resolution to scoop the Queen Anne Stakes this summer. The tough son of Galileo, who has since placed in the Qatar Sussex Stakes, Prix Jacques le Marois and Prix du Moulin can again be relied upon to give his all.

AIDAN O’BRIEN (TRAINER) ON CIRCUS MAXIMUS

Circus Maximus is very tough and consistent and seems to dance every dance. He’s a very competitive horse and loves it when horses challenge him – he’s tough and hardened and loves to get into a battle.

THE QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS NEWMARKET ROWLEY MILE, 6TH JUNE

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: KAMEKO (USA) 10/1 2nd: Wichita (IRE) 15/2 3rd: Pinatubo (IRE) 5/6F The fastest QIPCO 2000 Guineas ever run produced a thrilling finish, with Kameko gamely edging a neck ahead of Wichita under champion jockey Oisin Murphy. Pinatubo, the champion two-year-old, was a length further back, with Military March, in the same silks, a creditable fourth. The race was run behind closed doors six days after the resumption of racing. Kameko was giving trainer Andrew Balding his first winner in the race and his jockey a first British Classic success.

THE QUEEN ANNE STAKES

ROYAL ASCOT, 16TH JUNE

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: CIRCUS MAXIMUS (IRE) 4/1F 2nd: Terebellum (IRE) 5/1 3rd: Marie’s Diamond (IRE) 40/1 A third Group 1 success for Circus Maximus, who dug deep to get the better of Terebellum by a head in a tight finish. The pair pulled three lengths clear of frontrunning Marie’s Diamond. The overall pace was steady and the field congregated on the stands’ rail, leading to several hard-luck stories. Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said after the race “I think he has probably been a bit underestimated. He travels very strongly and then loves getting eyeballed.”

THE ST JAMES'S PALACE STAKES

ROYAL ASCOT, 20TH JUNE

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: PALACE PIER 4/1 2nd: Pinatubo (IRE) 11/8F 3rd: Wichita (IRE) 9/4 The race was billed as a rematch between Wichita and Pinatubo, who had chased home Kameko in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas. The pair had another good tussle – Pinatubo coming out on top between them this time – but the unbeaten Palace Pier, stepping up to Group 1 company for the first time, upstaged them under the unstoppable Dettori, who was riding his third winner of the day, and sixth at the meeting. The winner arrived late on the scene and won by a length.

THE QATAR SUSSEX STAKES

GOODWOOD, 29TH JULY

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M) £275,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: MOHAATHER 3/1 2nd: Circus Maximus (IRE) 6/1 3rd: Siskin (USA) 9/4F Mohaather, who had endured a luckless run in the Queen Anne earlier in the summer, showed a dazzling turn of foot to come from last to first after meeting some trouble in running. Jim Crowley had to drop his mount right to the back three out, before circumnavigating the entire field late on. Circus Maximus was runner-up in the race for the second year running, with Siskin, the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas winner, an honourable third. Kameko, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas winner, was fourth after enduring a luckless run up the rail under Oisin Murphy.

THE KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN SUN CHARIOT STAKES NEWMARKET ROWLEY MILE, 3RD OCTOBER

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M) £235,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: NAZEEF 17/2 2nd: Half Light (IRE) 14/1 3rd: Cloak Of Spirits (IRE) 28/1

The market for the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes suggested this renewal had plenty of candidates for top honours and it was proven Group 1 winner, Nazeef that obliged, stretching one-and-a-quarter lengths clear of French raider Half Light. Having scooped the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot and then the Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes on the July Course, the Rowley Mile also proved to be no trouble for Nazeef who added another Group 1 win to an ever-growing list for jockey, trainer and owner this year.

THE QIPCO CHAMPION STAKES

HISTORY OF THE RACE

Following on from iconic races like the Investec Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, the QIPCO Champion Stakes provides a pulsating showdown in the QIPCO British Champions Series Middle Distance division.

The race brought its great heritage with it from Newmarket, where it had been run from its inception in 1877 until 2010. But it’s move to QIPCO British Champions Day in 2011 has seen some remarkable performances and has further enhanced its status. Each of the nine renewals in the race’s new surroundings have produced top quality fields and thrilling finishes. The first set the bar high, with French raider Cirrus Des Aigles getting the better of Aussie superstar So You Think, with two champion mares, Snow Fairy and Midday, further behind. For quality and drama, few races could ever match the 2012 running, when Frankel rounded off his unbeaten career with another magnificent win, his 14th in a row. In 2016, Almanzor completed a stunning sequence of five victories with a dramatic defeat of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe winner, Found, to provide French trainer Jean-Claude Rouget with his first and Belgian jockey Christophe Soumillon with his second win in the race. Cracksman, son of Frankel, won back-to-back renewals in 2017 and 2018 by a combined distance of 13 lengths, and in doing so became the first horse to win the same race twice at QIPCO British Champions Day. In 2019 the tough mare Magical showed her class to get the better of Addeybb and secure her second win at QIPCO British Champions Day.

ADDEYBB

Sex: Gelding Colour: Chestnut Age: 6 Trainer: William Haggas Owner: Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum Sire-Dam: Pivotal - Bush Cat (USA) Breeder: Rabbah Bloodstock Limited Info: The soft-ground loving Addeybb beat all bar Magical in last year’s running of the QIPCO Champion Stakes and has continued to flourish this year, winning successive Group 1 prizes in Australia in the spring. He marked his return to these shores by finishing second to Lord North in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and on his latest start showed typical determination to go one better in Listed company at Ayr. He’s tremendously consistent and again seems sure to be in the thick of the action.

MAGICAL

Sex: Mare Colour: Bay Age: 5 Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Owner: Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor Sire-Dam: Galileo (IRE) – Halfway To Heaven (IRE) Breeder: Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt Info: No horse has ever won three times on QIPCO British Champions Day but few people would bet against Magical achieving the feat. The daughter of Galileo won the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes two years ago and 12 months ago returned to land this prize. Connections initially retired her, but the decision to delay her second career as a broodmare this term has been fully vindicated with three more Group 1 victories (taking her haul to seven) being achieved. She’s admirably consistent and versatile regarding the ground and was last seen beating Ghaiyyath in the Irish Champion Stakes.

MISHRIFF

Sex: Colt Colour: Bay Age: 3 Trainer: John Gosden Owner: Prince A A Faisal Sire-Dam: Make Believe – Contradict Breeder: Nawara Stud Limited Info: Mishriff has thrived on his racing this year, looking ideally served by today’s trip of a mile and a quarter. The form of his victory in a Listed race at Newmarket in early June proved extremely strong and he then became the first British-trained colt since 2014 to win the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) at Chantilly. On his latest start, he returned to France to win a Group 2 prize in emphatic style at Deauville. Seemingly at home on any type of ground, another bold bid seems assured.

AIDAN O’BRIEN (TRAINER) ON MAGICAL

She’s in good form and she ran in this race last year and loved it. It was a great race the last day, they went a nice even pace and she was happy to make the running or get a lead.

The Godolphin-owned five-year-old won in a course record time. His jockey, William Buick, said: “He's a very explosive horse with a great cruising speed. He's incredibly genuine and puts everything in to everything he does.” 2019 Investec Derby winner, Anthony Van Dyck was beaten by two-anda-half lengths in second, with three-time Gold Cup hero Stradivarius an honourable third.

THE PRINCE OF WALES'S STAKES

ROYAL ASCOT, 17TH JUNE

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 2F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: LORD NORTH (IRE) 5/1 2nd: Addeybb (IRE) 7/2 3rd: Barney Roy 8/1 A coming-of-age for the progressive Lord North, who streaked clear after leading a furlong out having been held up throughout. The four-year-old won by three-andthree-quarter lengths. Addeybb, runner-up in the QIPCO Champion Stakes the previous year, again had to settle for second, with Barney Roy holding off Japan, the favourite, for third. John Gosden revealed a gelding operation had transformed Lord North. A tilt at this year's QIPCO Champion Stakes has always been on the agenda.

THE INVESTEC DERBY

EPSOM DOWNS, 4TH JULY

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 4F) £500,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: SERPENTINE (IRE) 25/1 2nd: Khalifa Sat (IRE) 50/1 3rd: Amhran Na Bhfiann (IRE) 66/1 A remarkable running of the premier Classic with the unconsidered Serpentine, who had lost his maiden tag just a week earlier, soon establishing a clear lead and barely seeing another rival. With three furlongs to travel Serpentine was a dozen lengths clear and still galloping strongly under Emmet McNamara, one of six jockeys having his first ride in the race. The pack did belatedly close but Serpentine still had five-and-a-half lengths to spare at the finish. Outsiders chased the winner home, with Kameko, the 5/2 favourite, in fourth. An unlikely outcome but excellent story nonetheless.

THE CORAL-ECLIPSE SANDOWN PARK, 5TH JULY

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 2F) £250,000 PRIZE MONEY

1st: GHAIYYATH (IRE) 9/4 2nd: Enable EvensF 3rd: Japan 6/1 Three-year-olds were excluded but that didn’t detract, with two of the highest-rated horses in the world, Enable and Ghaiyyath, crossing swords. The former went off favourite but she was running for the first time since October and the race-fit Ghaiyyath took full advantage, making all at a good tempo and readily fending Enable off at the finish. Japan added substance to the form in third. After the race, Ghaiyyath’s trainer Charlie Appleby said “Ghaiyyath and Enable battling up the straight was a good spectacle and I’m very proud to have been part of it”.

THE KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH QIPCO STAKES ASCOT, 25TH JULY

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 4F) £400,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: ENABLE 4/9F 2nd: Sovereign (IRE) 12/1 3rd: Japan 5/2 An historic day with Enable becoming the first horse to win the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes on three occasions. She faced only two rivals but was imperious, breezing to a five-and-a-half length win over Sovereign, winner of the Irish Derby the previous summer. The win was an excellent way to bounce back from defeat in the Coral-Eclipse and showcased all the talent racing’s favourite mare still possessed. Japan was a distant third on ground deemed to be unsuitable.

THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL STAKES YORK, 19TH AUGUST

(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 2 1/2F) £275,000 PRIZE MONEY 1st: GHAIYYATH (IRE) 11/8F 2nd: Magical (IRE) 9/4 3rd: Lord North (IRE) 4/1 A third dazzling exhibition of front-running by Ghaiyyath this summer as he again galloped top-class opposition into submission. Galloping powerfully to the line, he won by three lengths under regular rider William Buick from seven-time Group 1 winner Magical, with runaway Prince of Wales’s winner Lord North another length-and-a-quarter back in third and Kameko, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero, in fourth. Afterwards, Ghaiyyath’s official rating was elevated to 130 – making him the highest-rated turf horse in the world.

THE BALMORAL HANDICAP STAKES (SPONSORED BY QIPCO)

HISTORY OF THE RACE

Named after the castle in Scotland that has belonged to the British Royal Family since it was purchased by Prince Albert in 1852, the Balmoral Handicap (sponsored by QIPCO) was inaugurated in 2014. A race known as the Balmoral Handicap had previously been staged over five furlongs at the Royal Meeting but was discontinued in 2004 in favour of the new Windsor Forest Stakes for fillies and mares. The Ascot Executive always intended to bring the name back when the appropriate opportunity arose, and Her Majesty The Queen graciously consented to it being re-introduced on QIPCO British Champions Day. The Balmoral Handicap, with its £100,000 race value, has quickly become established as one of the most prestigious events of its kind anywhere in Europe. In its inaugural running, the race could not have had a more popular winner than Marcus Tregoning’s Bronze Angel, twice the winner of the Cambridgeshire. In 2017, Lord Glitters secured victory for David O’Meara and subsequently went on to secure his first Group 1 at Royal Ascot in 2019 in the Queen Anne Stakes. The 2019 Balmoral was won by another horse trained by David O’Meara, Escobar, who came from off the pace late to assert close home. Second place went to Lord North who went on to secure the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2020.

The latter of those two victories was a commanding success here, cruising clear of the field to win by five lengths. That win saw his official rating hiked by 11lbs to 108, but will be running of 103 here today and it’s easy to see why he is prominent in today’s market.

He was a well-fancied 6/1 chance for the 2018 running and finished a close fifth. Last year, he went off the same price and came sixth. He’s also run in the past two renewals of the Royal Hunt Cup, finishing a fine fifth on one of those occasions. He’s had a light campaign but shaped really well when fifth in the QTS Ayr Gold Cup over six furlongs, his first outing since having a wind operation. He seems effective on all types of ground.

NJORD

Sex: Gelding Colour: Bay Age: 4 Trainer: Jessica Harrington Owner: Blessingndisguise Partnership Sire-Dam: Roderic O’Connor (IRE) – Rosalind Franklin Breeder: Mrs Eithne McDonnell Info: Irish challenger Njord was a striking winner at The Curragh in late June and has since been running excellent races in defeat. He twice went close at the Galway Festival (beaten a nose and then a neck in big fields) before finishing a close fifth in the Irish Cambridgeshire in late August. It seems only a matter of time before the four-year-old wins a big handicap and he should not be marked down too much for his latest fourth in Listed company at Listowel.
