CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the first day of The Tote+ May Racing Weekend. Two fascinating days of racing are ahead of us as we build ever closer to the five days of Royal Ascot in June. It was fantastic to see Stradivarius light up Royal Ascot Trials Day last week with victory in the Longines Sagaro Stakes. He showed that he retains all of his ability and enthusiasm as a seven-year-old and the prospect of him returning here in June to try and emulate Yeats by winning a fourth Gold Cup is hugely exciting. It is a busy weekend for our media partners Sky Sports Racing who will exclusively cover today’s Ascot card alongside the concluding day of Chester’s May Festival. Today’s feature race is the Tote+ Chester Cup, one of the highlights of the Flat season and the versatile Not So Sleepy, twice a winner of the valuable Betfair Exchange Trophy Handicap Hurdle at our Christmas Meeting, is one of the favourites. Who Dares Wins and Coeur De Lion, the most recent winners of the Queen Alexandra Stakes and the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, are also in the field. Tom Marquand, who rode Who Dares Wins to victory last year, is the focus of our Ascot Enquiry feature today in these pages. This is a two miles handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. PAGES 22-24

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for threeyear-olds which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100. PAGES 42-45

This race is a fivefurlongs maiden stakes for two-year-old fillies. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This one mile and four furlongs contest for horses aged three-years-old is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-yearolds which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80. PAGES 52-54

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are preﬁxed by the letter h. 23. A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The ﬁrst permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost ﬁfty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who ﬁrst saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The ﬁrst race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bears little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that ﬁrst Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the ﬁrst four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magniﬁcent achievement, and one that Stradivarius could emulate this year.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot in all. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 11 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - most recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. Dave Lowe came agonisingly close to taking the 2016 Commonwealth Cup home with him but his beloved Kachy had other ideas and veered across the track, handing the Cup to Quiet Reflection, but this is still one of the Lowe’s favourite racing moments. Dave’s interest in racing stretches back to the 1970’s when he used to sit with his late father to watch the ITV 7 on World of Sport, but his first foray into ownership was a share in a horse with Deva Racing called Misty Conquest ten years ago. As with all owners Dave has lived through the highs and the lows but his favourite racing moment so far was winning the AW Sprint Final in 2019 with his beloved Kachy, this memory still eclipses all others. “We had planned this route for Kachy for 18 months so for it to actually happen was incredible.” Dave does have one regret about becoming an owner, “I wish I had done it years earlier, the thrill of watching your 20 OWNERS FOCUS

colours crossing the line is a fantastic feeling.” Kachy may have come tantalisingly close to getting a Royal Ascot win but he is not the only runner the Lowe’s have had. Their own homebred Caroline Dale also came close taking 3rd in the Queen Mary in 2020 when 100/1 and exceeded all expectations, “we are really looking forward to seeing her run as she should have a lovely 3-year-old career ahead of her.” Any one with a passion for racing will have a horse they wish they owned, and Dave is no exception, “it would have to be Battash, I love the sprinters.” As for a race he wishes to win he has two, “The King’s Stand or Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot.” Each owner has their own specific ‘ideals’ when choosing a trainer but Dave states that trust is everything to him, “one who listens and treats every Owner with respect and one you can trust to tell you everything the way it is and not be afraid to tell the bad news as well as the good.”

DESERT ENCOUNTER AMONG BUCKHOUNDS WINNERS TO MAKE THEIR MARK INTERNATIONALLY

2017 BUCKHOUNDS STAKES WINNER DESERT ENCOUNTER HAS GONE ON TO REPRESENT TEAM BRITISH RACING ON THE WORLD STAGE ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS

Since its inception in 2005, the Listed Buckhounds Stakes, run over a distance just shy of 1 mile 4 furlongs, has proved a happy hunting ground for horses that have represented British trainers admirably all over the world. In just its fourth year, the 2008 contest provided a springboard for future globetrotter Spanish Moon, who went on from victory in this race to win a Group 1 in France, place in top-level contests in Dubai and Hong Kong and run at the Breeders’ Cup for Sir Michael Stoute and his late owner, Prince Khalid Abdullah. John Gosden’s trio of Buckhounds Stakes winners – Duncan in 2009, Aiken in 2012 and Gatewood in 2014 – all went on to win Group contests in France. The Sylvester Kirk-trained winner of the 2019 renewal, Salouen, was a regular across the channel over the years and earned his spot in Group 1 company in Hong Kong, while last year’s winner, Dashing Willoughby, subsequently contested the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in Australia for Andrew Balding, remaining down-under thereafter for new connections. But the accolade for the most well-travelled winner of the Buckhounds Stakes must go to the David Simcock-trained Desert Encounter. Since his win in the race in 2017, this admirable gelding has gone on to become a two-time winner of the Grade 1 Canadian International at Woodbine, also representing Simcock’s Trillium Place Stables in the Middle East each spring. A mainstay of the British middle-distance division since his Buckhounds Stakes success,

Desert Encounter has been a hardy and reliable servant, lining up in no less than eight Group 1s, two Group 2s and 10 Group 3s on home turf for Simcock and his owner Abdulla Al Mansoori. Now a nine-year-old, Desert Encounter remains in training for 2021 and, judged on his latest appearance when he defied his odds to finish runner-up to the exciting Waldkonig at Sandown Park, appears to have lost none of his enthusiasm for the game over the winter. He holds an entry in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, a race that he has contested twice before but failed to fire in as yet. “If you were ever to own a horse, he is the ideal horse to own,” Simcock said of Desert Encounter after his second consecutive Grade 1 win in Canada, and it is not hard to see why. A 12-time winner who has been in the first three on 29 of his 42 starts, he has been rated as high as 118 and has won more than £1million in prize money – a sum that makes the 32,000 guineas he cost his owner as a yearling at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 in 2013 look like a veritable steal! Reflecting on the gelding’s Buckhounds Stakes victory in 2017, Simcock said this week: “It proved to be the first of Desert Encounter’s eight Stakes wins. It was a springboard to a wonderful career that is now into its eighth season. It sits perfectly in the calendar for a horse starting off the year in pattern company.” If the winner of this year’s Buckhounds Stakes does not already have airmiles to their name, it would certainly be no surprise to see them open their account in the near future.

ASCOT MEETS.... Alex Hammond Alex Hammond is often seen on our screens paddock-side at racecourses all over the country, bringing her expert opinion and sunny disposition in her role as a Sky Sports reporter. Did Alex always want to work in racing or did she have other plans, we find out… At school did you know you wanted to work within the racing industry? Not at all. I loved horses as a child and was completely obsessed with them, to the degree that my English teacher used to despair that all my creative writing involved them. It didn’t do me much harm in the long run though did it? I didn’t know what I wanted to do at school and careers advice in those days was quite limited, but I saw an advert in the Horse & Hound magazine whilst I was studying for my A-Levels for a college in Witney. Their courses revolved around the racing industry and I thought it looked like an interesting path to take, so I applied. After completing A-Levels I was accepted on a course there, but didn’t get a grant initially, so took a year out and embarked (with my Mum) on a mission to go to as many racecourses as possible. We had some great days together, and I knew then that was where I wanted to be, so the following year I went to that college and opportunity followed. How did your role as a presenter at Sky Sports Racing come about? Well, I worked at The Racing Channel back in the day (from 1998-2002), but sadly that that came to an end in the early 2000s when the channel folded. There didn’t appear to be many opportunities in television at the time, but I was lucky to be given a chance to present at Sky Sports News, despite knowing little about general sport. I learned on the job and worked with some fabulous people over my 16-year stint, but when I was asked if I’d like to join the new Sky Sports Racing channel and return to covering the sport I was passionate about I was thrilled. I won’t say it was an easy decision, because I felt like part of the furniture at SSN, but racing is what I love and has turned out to be the best decision I could have made. What is your career highlight so far? That’s hard to define because there have been so many over the years. Breaking News at Sky Sports News was always a thrill, and the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson livened the newsroom up one morning. Our shifts there started before dawn and with a 1.30am alarm call you tended to feel jetlagged most of the time. However, when something like that happened the adrenaline took over and that buzz was special.

Since SSR launched there have been some incredible days too. Enable’s King George ding-dong with Crystal Ocean was memorable and our first Royal Ascot was special too. During the past year it’s also been a privilege to keep the show on the road for racing fans at a time when there was little to look forward to. To receive emails from people who are having a tough time and knowing you helped brighten up their day makes it feel incredibly worthwhile. Who is the racing personality (from anywhere in the world) that you would like to interview? That’s a tough one. I have been lucky to interview some of the biggest names in sport (Roger Federer was a particular highlight) and I don’t have a bucket list of personalities to tick off yet. But your question is thought provoking and I feel I ought to make one now. In Britain we are spoiled with some of the best racing in the world and therefore we mix with, and talk to, top names on a regular basis. If you didn’t follow the path into TV what career would you have done? I’m very lucky to enjoy this wonderful career without ever actually having that as the grand plan initially. If the teachers at my school had been a barometer of what I was capable of, it wouldn’t have led me down this path. If I may I’d like to quote Baz Luhrmann from his song Sunscreen as I feel it’s a true reflection on how I have always felt about my journey.

ASCOT MEETS.... Alex Hammond (continued) The racecourse you would love to present from anywhere in the world and why? Shall I say Garrison Savannah in Barbados for obvious reasons? Joking aside, I’ve been to The Garrison and it’s a unique track. I wouldn’t fancy riding round there that’s for sure as the bend is pretty sharp, but it has all the benefits of location, location, location. Did you study sports journalism at University? No, I didn’t go to university. The HND in Business and Finance (Stud and Stable Administration) did me just fine, but I was definitely more focused on the latter part of its title, than the first! Why should the younger generation look to work in the industry? Racing is an industry of opportunity and not just for those with experience with horses. There are so many roles to explore and the door is ready to be pushed wide open by anyone wanting to take that path. Racing has taken me to places I could never have dreamed about as that pony mad youngster and given me an interesting and varied career. If you are prepared to work hard anything is possible, so why not give it a go? Favourite Ascot moment? Can I say riding in the Ladies Diamond race years ago? We finished 4th, so came back into the old winner’s enclosure which was a moment I’ll never forget. I’ve also had a spin in a charity race at Ascot. For me Ascot is the finest racecourse in the world and to be given the chance to ride on the track was a thrill and a privilege. I also had an “I was there moment” when Frankel won his 2012 Champions Stakes. This racing journey started with my mum, and I was thrilled to be able to take her along to enjoy what was an historic moment.

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS ALZHEIMERS DEMENTIA SUPPORT

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week which takes place from 10-16th May 2021 we are highlighting the work of our friends at Alzheimers Dementia Support (ADS). ADS is a local charity that provides a wide range of high quality, varied and enjoyable services whilst giving companionship, support, advice, information and sign-posting to as many people with dementia, their carers and families as they can within the local communities of Windsor, Ascot, Maidenhead, Slough & Langley. Ascot Racecourse’s involvement with charity began in 2019 when we welcomed members to the racecourse to enjoy an afternoon tea in one our boxes as part of our community tea programme. Since then, the charity has delivered mental health awareness training to our staff members and provided input into our Accessibility Guide for racegoers. The charity has excellent links with the Dementia Team at the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead as well as contact with the Social Prescribers in Doctor’s surgeries, all of whom refer local people to them for support. In addition, the Maidenhead High Street Charity Shop, monthly newsletter and social media posts all help to communicate how they can assist. ADS also has a book ‘A Kids Guide to Dementia’, which is full of information for young and old alike and is introduced by the author in this short video A Kid’s Guide to Dementia which can be purchased from their website, via an advisor or in their shop. When the first lockdown commenced, most of the charity’s services were moved online, creating a new website where members could access information and activities. Their Advisor Team continues to provide full telephone support as well as doorstep visits when necessary and allowed. “Singing for Pleasure” remains their most popular service and these sessions are currently held via Zoom with the charity hiring professional, experienced musicians to lead Dementia friendly singing. 3 8 A S C OT R AC E C O U R S E S U P P O RT S

ADS is now planning the gradual and safe return of their in-person Services, including their Out & About Respite Service as well as exploring the launch of a new service in conjunction with the Berkshire College of Agriculture. This year will mark the charity’s 10th anniversary and celebratory events are planned for both members and their wonderful volunteers. However, like all charities, ADS has experienced a decline in their usual funding channels due to their Charity Shop having to close, collection tins not being accessed and fundraisers not being able to take part in their planned activities. THE ASCOT ENQUIRY Tom Marquand Tom Marquand has made an incredible start to the 2021 season, travelling to Australia to partner his faithful partner Addeybb to win at the Sydney Autumn festival before heading back to the UK to begin his domestic campaign. Tom took his first Royal Ascot win in 2020 when Who Dares Wins took the Queen Alexandra Stakes and he will no doubt be bidding for further success at next months meeting.
