CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the second day of the Summer Mile Racing Weekend. The feature race on the card is the Group 2 Betfred Summer Mile Stakes which is routinely a competitive, high-class race and last year was won impressively by Mohaather, who went on to Group 1 glory in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. This year’s renewal features several horses that ran in the Queen Anne Stakes behind Palace Pier at Royal Ascot. Sir Busker was a career-best third that day and it will be fascinating to see if he can translate his excellent Straight Course record at Ascot onto the Round Course today. That contest is live on ITV along with the Betfred Heritage Handicap, always an extremely competitive contest over the minimum distance of five furlongs. Our thanks go to Betfred, our Official Bookmaker, who sponsor today’s card. Built by brothers Fred and Peter Done, Betfred opened their first shop in Salford in 1967 and now employ over 10,000 people across more than 1,600 shops. They will be operating two betting shops within the Grandstand today and we are delighted to have them back on site. The day starts with two pony races, organised by the Pony Racing Authority, which we are delighted to be staging once again having been unable to do so last year. The likes of Tom Marquand, Hollie Doyle and Callum Shepherd have all come through the pony racing ranks recently so keep an eye on the young jockeys today as there might be some future-stars on show. At Newmarket today the Group 1 Darley July Cup is the headline act on the final day of the July Festival. The King’s Stand Stakes winner Oxted heads the field and he is joined by fellow Royal Ascot winners Creative Force and Rohaan while Dragon Symbol, first past the post in the Commonwealth Cup, also lines up. It’s a high-class renewal with international flavour in the form of American runner Extravagant Kid, who was third behind Oxted at Royal Ascot. Our next meeting is the QIPCO King George Diamond Weekend where the King George VI & Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes is shaping up to be a vintage renewal. Not only could we see this year’s Royal Ascot winners Love and Wonderful Tonight clash but also the Derby winner Adayar is currently being aimed at the race along with Coronation Cup winner Pyledriver and last year’s Champion Stakes winner Addeybb. We hope you can join us then and, meanwhile, I hope you enjoy today’s racing, either on course or through ITV Racing and Sky Sports Racing.

4th Race 3.35pm The Betfred Heritage Handicap Stakes

PAGES 16-18

1st Race 1.50pm The Betfred Sports British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

This seven furlong novice stakes is restricted to two-year-olds which are E.B.F. eligible, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties for each race won. PAGES 22-24

2nd Race 2.25pm The betfred.com Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile about six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. PAGES 30-32

3rd Race 3.00pm The Betfred Summer Mile Stakes (Group 2)

This one mile race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 2 contest and will attract some high-class horses. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 1lb and fillies 8st 12lb, although any runner which has already won a Group 2 race after 2020 will be issued with a 3lb penalty while Group 1 winners will incur a 5lb penalty.

CONTENTS

This race is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 44-45

5th Race 4.10pm The Betfred TV Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-old and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 71 to 90. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85. PAGES 50-52

6th Race 4.45pm The Betfred Nifty Fifty Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile about four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 86 to 105. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 6lb in this race. PAGES 56-58

7th Race 5.20pm The Betfred ‘Ascot Official Bookmaker’ Handicap Stakes

The finale today is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bears little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

6

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius could emulate this year.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot in all. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 11 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - most recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. MOHAATHER: The 2020 Summer Mile winner who is now one of Britain’s most exciting young stallions

CLICK HERE TO VIEW A REPLAY OF MOHAATHER’S IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY IN LAST YEAR’S SUMMER MILE STAKES

Witnessing a horse whose star is still rising slam a classy field and announce himself as the next Group 1 winner in waiting is often every bit as exciting as seeing a reliable top-level stalwart secure yet another career defining success. Twelve months ago, Group 2 Betfred Summer Mile Stakes favourite Mohaather delighted fans and set pulses racing with a scintillating performance on the hallowed Ascot turf that proved that he was on the verge of fulfilling his potential. His late owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and trainer Marcus Tregoning had each displayed admirable patience with the evidently talented son of Showcasing. An unlucky passage in running in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot a month earlier in June would have given even the most reasonable of connections cause for frustration. But the saying ‘patience is a virtue’ is often borne out in racing, and on this warm July afternoon at the Berkshire track, it certainly seemed as if all the pieces of the jigsaw were finally coming together for Mohaather. The four-year-old was given a sumptuous ride by Dane O’Neill. Having settled him just behind the pace, O’Neill pressed the go button halfway up the Ascot straight and Mohaather duly obliged, showing his customary turn of foot to win by an ultra-impressive 3 and 3/4 lengths. As this eye-catching performance suggested he might, Mohaather duly backed this up with a dazzling display in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, beating a host of talented milers including Circus Maximus, Kameko and Siskin. 2 6 M O H A AT H E R - G B R I

He was subsequently retired to Nunnery Stud in Norfolk, the headquarters of Sheikh Hamdan’s global racing and breeding operation, Shadwell. Mohaather was introduced to breeders at a fee of £20,000, a price that they unsurprisingly jumped at considering his exemplary race record – he was a Group winner at two, three and four – and good looks. Now a five-year-old, Nunnery Stud’s newest recruit has recently completed his first season at stud, having covered 146 mares. Shadwell’s nominations and marketing manager, Tom Pennington, tells us more: “Mohaather has just finished covering his first book of mares and he’ll now enjoy a good summer break at grass. He’s taken to his new job exceptionally well, but it’s what we expected. He’s blessed with a phenomenal attitude - all he wants to do is please. “He looks a million dollars at the moment and is testament to the stallion team who do a fantastic job. He’s a bull of a horse, blessed with strong hindquarters and a great second thigh. You can really see how he generated that speed. “He was well supported by a good cross section of Europe’s leading breeders and received some of Shadwell’s most exciting mares, headed by dual Group 1-winning miler Nazeef as well as Asheerah, dam of Irish 2,000 Guineas hero and leading young sire Awtaad. “It’s not every day you have the opportunity to stand one of Europe’s leading milers. Thoroughbreds who possess an explosive turn of foot live long in the memory and Mohaather was one of those rare equine talents blessed with that trait. Let’s hope he can pass that on to his offspring.” Find out more about Mohaather and his new career at stud by visiting his Great British Stallion Showcase profile here.

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS

Today, we are delighted to be raising awareness for five local charities that have most recently benefitted from the “Ascot Racecourse Supports” grant fund managed by our charity partners, Berkshire Community Foundation. Smart Works Reading tackles a root cause of poverty by supporting local disadvantaged women into work. Over one in two of their clients have been offered employment; and they have helped approximately 700 women since they opened in 2015. Some of their clients have lived through challenging, life-changing or traumatic events; others are long-term unemployed or were made redundant during the pandemic. The women often lack self-confidence and all are given individual support. Ascot is supporting Smart Works to provide free employment skills advice, interview coaching and high-quality workwear for women in need. Together, we will help more women to gain confidence, excel at interviews, and secure a more stable financial future for them and their families. For more information, visit: https://reading.smartworks.org.uk/ Dingley’s Promise is a Berkshire-based charity providing support and education to children in the Early Years with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) which Ascot Racecourse has supported since 2019. They have three centres based in Reading, Wokingham and Newbury and ensure that every child learns in the way that suits them, in an inclusive and supportive environment, which enables them to reach their full potential. Many children with SEND have been hugely affected by the pandemic, particularly the lack of access to key services, isolation and lack of essential interaction with other children and adults. Ascot’s funding will support their recovery programme to assist the children regain key skills. Berkshire Vision is a charity that has supported blind and partially sighted children and adults across Berkshire for over 110 years. They provide a wide-range of services designed to ensure visually impaired people have everything they need to remain as independent as possible, including telephone befriending which, during the pandemic, Ascot staff volunteered to join. They also offer employability support and tech buddies to enable those with sight loss to make the best use of technology and accessibility features. They organise activities to keep members connected from the comfort and safety of their own homes plus social events and adapted sports. Our latest funding will support “I Can Do It” courses for children with sight loss, building independence and life skills. For more information, to donate, or to get involved, visit www.berkshirevision.org.uk. Re:Charge work with families in the Maidenhead community who frequently face difficult life challenges and with men and women (18+) who are often exposed in some way emotionally, physically or financially, including those recovering from addictions. Their weekly drop-in sessions provide help with parenting, stress and difficulties with home life together with play, reading and creative activities for children. Ascot’s support will fund six part-time staff to continue these vital services. For more information, visit: www.rechargerandr.org.uk Cowshed is a crisis charity that provides emergency support to people across Berkshire at a time when they are going through personal crisis, e.g. domestic abuse, homelessness and financial hardship. They provide clothing, bedding, toiletries and other essentials for families and individuals in need. At the start of April 2020, they had assisted 893 people across Berkshire in the preceding 15 months. In the 12 months since then, they have helped more than 6,000 people by providing emergency clothing referrals to 2,500+ individuals, Christmas gift sacks to 1,000+ children, Easter hampers to 1,200 children as well as supporting 700 children with craft packs during the lockdown and almost 800 vulnerable adults/care leavers. Ascot’s funding will enable the charity to employ another staff member to assist with their essential fundraising aims. For more information, visit: https://www.thecowshed.org

The breeding side of the horseracing world is vitality important and can take you around the world. Here is Sophie’s career story. “After completing the National Stud Diploma Course in June 2020, I ventured to France to work with yearlings (young horses) for Ecurie Des Monceaux ahead of the Arqana September and October Bloodstock Sales. It was a great opportunity for me to further my French racing knowledge and increase my understanding of European pedigree lines. A typical day included hand walking 3-4 lots of yearlings in tack for 20-40 minutes each, alongside putting horses on and off the walker, grooming and checking the yearlings over for any injuries. The tack was adjusted specifically for each yearling to encourage strengthening in the areas that the individual required. Approximately 4 weeks prior to the September sale, we would have 3 or 4 different visits a week from top quality bloodstock agents (both national and international), ready to analyse our 2020 stock. The sales itself gave me plenty of experience in showing horses and I thoroughly enjoyed the adrenaline of taking a horse through the sales ring for the first time. All of team Monceaux’s hard work was rewarded when we stood as a team and watched the Monceaux-bred Dubawi filly out of Starlet’s Sister (half-sister to 2020 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe victor Sottsass) top the September sale for €2.5 million. I left Monceaux in December, with the prospect of returning to them in Summer 2021, I am very grateful for the opportunities and experiences they have provided me with. Gilltown Stud I arrived at Gilltown Stud, County Kildare Ireland, in late January ahead of the 2021 Breeding Season. I am delighted to be back working with mares and foals, witnessing and caring for new life is truly remarkable. I enjoy analysing the conformation of the foals and altering their turnout regimes to help them strengthen and develop in ways which will benefit them during their track careers. Gilltown has some incredible breaking and training facilities and I have thoroughly enjoyed expanding my knowledge of these sectors of the Thoroughbred racing industry, whilst simultaneously furthering my ability in caring for youngstock. I am excited for what the rest of the 2021 breeding season has to offer and to be looking after the champions of the future The best advice I could give someone wanting to have a career in the breeding industry is to utilise the courses available, for example the English and Irish National Stud courses. Both put you in connection with top people in the industry, act as a strong support network for you after the course has finished and provide you with a solid grounding to all aspects of working on a stud.” Find out more about careers, jobs and training in the horseracing industry, visit www.careersinracing.com CA R E E R S I N R AC I N G 47

ASCOT SUPPORTS – WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Laura O’Neill, Operations Executive, Retraining of Racehorses (RoR); I was lucky enough to be offered Jallota, now known as Jally, through a good friend of mine, Steph, who works for trainer Charlie Hills. Steph called me one day and asked if I knew anyone who would like to give Jallota a “forever” home and after a short think, I said I would love to have him! Jally was previously owned by Dr and Mrs Hay (whose racing colours have also been carried by the likes of Fame And Glory and Here Comes When), his racing career saw him travel to Dubai, Italy and all over the UK, including running four times at Ascot. He ran a total of 52 times, winning seven races, including at both Group 3 and Listed level, as well as being placed in a Group 1. I collected Jally from Charlie’s yard in September 2019 and gave him 8 months in the field as he had an old injury that needed a bit of rest before we bought him back into work in May 2020. 54 WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Due to a previous injury the decision was made to direct his retraining to the dressage arena. He took to this very well and in September 2020 we made our debut at an unaffiliated dressage competition and won our class. Jally has continued to improve and will now go affiliated this year with the plan to climb the levels and see how we go. The Hay’s are very interested in how all of their former racehorses are and take great pleasure in hearing of their achievements off the racecourse. They enjoy hearing how Jally is progressing and have added me to their family and friends Facebook page where I post updates on how we are doing and results from competitions. “We are delighted that Jallota is with Laura and thoroughly enjoying his new life in the dressage arena. It is wonderful to see such a lovely horse, who gave us so much fun and pleasure during his racing days having the opportunity to have a second career and a lovely home. The Facebook page gives people like Laura the chance to update us with what the horses are doing and allowing us to see any pictures, which is always so nice. We are very much looking forward to seeing more of Laura and Jallota’s journey together”.

ror.org.uk

Most horses retiring from racing are eminently suitable for a further career in one of the sport horse disciplines or simply as a hack. In the fifteen years since RoR started staging competitions exclusively for former racehorses, annual participation has increased significantly. During non-Covid affected times, RoR annually stages 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The RoR Showing and Dressage Series are the most popular amongst RoR members, however, Eventing, Horseball and Polocrosse are all on the rise, highlighting the many different disciplines that RoR has to offer. To provide a comparison and some perspective, in 2019 more thoroughbreds took part in RoR dressage competitions than ran in steeplechases (4,148 vs 2,965). Most racehorse trainers have now established their own networks for finding second careers for horses in their care but owners wishing to learn more can ring the RoR helpline for advice on 01488 648998, there is also a directory of retrainers on the RoR website, as well as RoR’s own Source A Horse site, an online facility through which former racehorses can either be sold or loaned out.

THE ASCOT ENQUIRY Laura Pearson Laura Pearson had captured the eye of many racegoers with her rise through the amateur ranks but June 16th 2021 will be a date that Laura won’t be forgetting for a long while, this was the day she bagged her first Royal Ascot winner in the Kensington Palace Stakes flying out the gates and leading from start to finish. With no doubt that this will be the first of many high level successes for Laura we find out a little more about this bilingual young lady. 1) You rode an incredible race to win the Kensington Palace stakes, your first Royal Ascot winner – how did you feel when you crossed the winning line? Breathtaking, it was quite incredible, a dream come true, and I still have to pinch myself now. 2) How did you get into racing? My dad was a point-to-point trainer and amateur jockey so I was always intrigued by the sport. My mum also had Arab’s so after pony club and sometime hunting I started pony racing and Arab racing. I also got a weekend job for Phil Collinson, who trained Sheilk Hamdams Arab’s, when I was 15 and caught the bug. 3) You have had an incredible start to your career, but do you have one race above any other that you would like to win this year? I try not to set exact goals, so I don’t disappoint myself. It would be incredible to ride another winner at Ascot, but I won’t set a concrete goal as so much can go wrong or change. Mentally I find it easier not to set myself to fail. 4) Do you have a racing idol? Growing up my idols were Richard Hughes and AP McCoy but today it would have to be Ryan Moore because he can change his riding style depending on which horse he is riding. 5) What is the best piece of advice you have been given so far? My agent, Stephen Croft who said, “come up the middle at Lingfield” and I think I have won every race at Lingfield when I have come up the middle. 6) Did you always want to be a flat jockey, or did you ever consider being a jump jockey? I did want to be a jump jockey, but I wasn’t built for that job and would have to carry a lot more weight to be a jump jockey, so I had to rethink my plans. I still get to school some jump horses over fences, and it gives me an incredible buzz. 7) Which one race at any Ascot race meeting would you like to win? I would like to win the Queen Anne Stakes but even getting the opportunity to ride in it would be brilliant. 8) One thing about you that our readers might not know. I grew up in France and French was my first language before moving back to the UK when I was 10. 9) The one racehorse from the history books you would have liked to ride. Black Caviar – if you can have a mare or filly that has a heart of a lion then they cannot be beaten. 10) You are called up to ride at the Ascot Shergar Cup meeting, which horse would you choose to ride? ANYTHING – I would be honoured to even lead up at the Shergar Cup so the opportunity to ride at the Shergar Cup would be a dream come true. 11) What advice would you give to a young person who would like to follow in your footsteps and become a jockey? It’s a very hard game and it is a game; you need a lot of luck on your side and choose the people you have around very carefully. Surround yourself by people who want you to do well. 12) What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a jockey? The first job I ever wanted to do was be a mechanic but I soon discovered I was not great with cars so I would like to be a detective, it fascinates me. 62 T H E A SCOT E N Q U I RY
