CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the opening day of the Autumn Racing Weekend at Ascot. It has been a high-class summer of Flat racing at Ascot headlined by the likes of Adayar, Subjectivist, Poetic Flare and Alcohol Free while the exploits of Nicola Currie in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will live long in the memory. We still have QIPCO British Champions Day to look forward to at Ascot in two weeks’ time but all eyes will be on Longchamp this Sunday for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. It will be fascinating to see if the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes winner Adayar can become just the third horse ever to win the Derby, King George and Arc in the same season. Today’s feature race is the Harrogate Water B Corp Noel Murless Stakes, a Listed race for three-year-olds over a mile-and-three-quarters. It is designed for promising young stayers who could develop into Gold Cup horses of the future, just as Big Orange did having won this race in 2014. It is fantastic to welcome Racing to School back to Ascot today for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and we hope students from South Ascot Primary School have an enjoyable and informative day. They will have the honour of judging the Best Turned Out for the opening race which we have named after the charity that provides free, educational days to school children at racing-related venues. We are also pleased to support the Berkshire Search & Rescue Dogs organisation with the naming of the final race on the card. This week marked the 25th anniversary of Frankie Dettori’s astonishing achievement of riding all seven winners on the card at the old Festival of Britain meeting at Ascot on 28th September 1996. We are delighted to remember the ‘Magnificent Seven’ with the naming of today’s fifth race and pleased to welcome racecourse bookmaker Gary Wiltshire, who made his name by trying to take on Frankie’s final mount that day and lost over a million pounds, to make the post-race presentations. Our thanks also go to all of today’s sponsors including Harrogate Water, Official Water of Ascot, Troy Asset Management and Design Work Studios. Off the track, we are thrilled to once again combine with CAMRA to provide the popular Ascot Beer Festival. An outstanding selection of more than 160 real ales, ciders and perries from local producers will be available in the outside area of the Grandstand concourse as well as a wine tasting offered by Hallgarten & Novum Wines and a wide array of food options. We hope you enjoy the day and look forward to welcoming you back to Ascot in the near future.

1st Race 1.55pm The Racing To School Classified Stakes
4th Race 3.40pm The Design Work Studios Handicap Stakes
This race is a one-mile classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90. Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival. PAGES 26-27
2nd Race 2.30pm The Troy Asset Management Novice Stakes This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the horses in this contest are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career. PAGES 32-33
3rd Race 3.05pm The Harrogate Water B Corp Noel Murless Stakes (Listed Race)
This one mile and six furlongs contest for three-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 1lb for colts and geldings and 8st 10lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success.
2
CONTENTS
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. PAGES 44-46
5th Race 4.15pm The 25 Years Since Frankies Magnificent Seven Handicap Stakes
This is a two miles handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80. PAGES 48-51
6th Race 4.50pm The Berkshire Search & Rescue Dogs (BSARD) Handicap Stakes
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. The Berkshire Search and Rescue Dogs (BSARD), which is part of the nationwide Lowland Rescue organisation, have been operating successfully for more than 12 years, and are tasked by Thames Valley Police (TVP) to search for vulnerable missing people. On average they are called out once a week. Whilst Thames Valley Police always respond positively to a report of a vulnerable missing person, financial pressures mean that TVP no longer have the same search capability and rely on the Lowland Search and Rescue organisations to assist by providing this function. They are self-funding and provide their own dogs and equipment. www.bsard.org.uk

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS RACING TO SCHOOL We are delighted to finally welcome back Racing to School, the educational charity that provides free, interactive educational days to school children at racing-related venues, who are here today with students from South Ascot Primary School. As part of the programme, each young person is given a workbook that focuses on numeracy and literacy and contains a range of resources that supports the delivery of interactive and outdoor learning. The day is tremendous fun and students are given behind-thescenes access to all areas of the racecourse and even get to feel what it is like to be a jockey with a ride on an equiciser. In 2019, Racing to School delivered a record 372 events across the country – engaging over 15,000 young people. The global Covid-19 outbreak severely impacted the charity’s ability to deliver events, with participation numbers dropping to around 25% of their target in 2020. However, the charity has recently been able to return to a busy programme of events within both their Education and Riders’ Programmes. The Riders’ Programme encourages young people who already ride and/or have an interest in another equine discipline to consider horseracing as a possible career route or leisure activity.

The charity also offer Horse and Pony Racing Taster Sessions as part of a five-year collaborative programme with the Pony Racing Authority, Pony Club and the British Horseracing Authority’s Careers in Racing team. The Pony Racing Pathway Project offers a formal pathway into the horseracing industry for young people through pony racing, no matter what their background. Racing to School also leads the “Racing Together” partnership, which represents the wide variety of community engagement work undertaken by racing and youth charities, and commercial organisations whose work benefits others. To mark their return to Ascot Racecourse, our 1.55pm race has been named The Racing to School Classified Stakes and the students from South Ascot Primary School have been given the honour of judging the Best Turned Out Horse from the race – they can be seen just outside the parade ring sporting their jockey silks! Chrissie Sykes is currently a Racing Secretary at Ruth Carr Racing. Last year she was nominated for a Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Award. Here is her career story as she talks about her role and how finding your dream career has no time limit! “In July 2019 I had been reflecting on my career and how I had been in my previous three positions for approximately 10 years each. It got me thinking that at the age of 53, I probably had another ten years of active work life left in me and I decided to search for a career which involved my passion for horses. With all this renewed interest in horses, and after attending many racing yard open days in Malton and Middleham, it made sense to approach local trainers and ask if they had any staff vacancies and by chance my CV landed on Ruth Carr’s desk on a busy July race day. Ruth had always carried out all the office work as well as everything else and she invited me for a chat. We hit it off straight away and I was very impressed with Ruth’s efficient work methods and her immaculate yard with lots of happy horses and staff. Ruth created the role of Racing Secretary for me and I started this position by attending a Racing Secretary’s Course at the British Racing School in Newmarket. I had a wonderful few days learning all about the admin and strict Rules and Regulations of Racing and everything that goes on behind the scenes. I also got up early one morning to watch the horses exercise out on the Newmarket gallops and was lucky enough to see Enable exercising before her trip that weekend to the Prix de L’arc de Triomph in France. Having only attended the races as a spectator, I had little idea of what was involved to get the right horse to the right racecourse, with the right colours and the right Jockey and the sponsor’s logo displayed correctly in the right position at the exact size – the list goes on. With Ruth’s help I quickly settled into my new role and I am loving every minute. It is great to see the yard activity from my office window and see the horses setting off to go racing.” Start your career in racing today, visit: www.careersinracing.com for information on jobs, careers and training in the industry.

HARROGATE SPRING WATER – COMPETITION
Harrogate Spring announce Matthew Lewis as winner of their Mindful Cocktail competition Britain’s number one premium water brand has announced the winner of its first Mindful Drinking Competition. Harrogate Spring Water has announced the winner of its first Mindful Drinking cocktail competition, in partnership with ‘Mindful Mixologist’, Camille Vidal. The competition aimed to inspire creativity around low and non-alcoholic cocktails as part of the brand’s wider commitment to mindful drinking. With health and wellness an ever-increasing priority for consumers, this new initiative aimed to shine a light on the growing no and low sector, encouraging bartenders to showcase their mixology skills through cocktails which promote mental health and wellbeing. The competition was won by Matthew Lewis, who manages unique destination bars and venues, WC Newcastle and The Auction House in Morpeth. Matthew studied bartending at the Bols Bartending Academy in Amsterdam, before going on to open his first bar in Middlesborough when he was just twenty-two. He saw a gap in the market for a high-end cocktail bar offering more delicate flavours and statement serves and went onto open the Nuthatch bar. Matthew’s Cocktail, the ‘On the Nose’ is a refreshing low-ABV cocktail that uses Harrogate Sparkling with Lillet Blanc to create a delicious botanical spritz with crisp notes of orange blossom, yuzu, and apricot. The name ‘On the Nose’ is a playful nod to Ascot and a subtle reminder to enjoy the fragrant aroma of the cocktail before you sip! H A R R O G AT E S P R I N G
Matthew Lewis said: “This was my first ever cocktail competition entry, and I couldn’t believe I won! I’ve seen lots of competitions however the mindful aspect really stood out for me. Most cocktails are dominated by the spirit, so by reducing or removing this I found more enjoyment, creating depth and balance using fewer alcoholic flavours.“I’ve always been a lover of a spritz in the sun, and as restrictions impacted and changed everyone’s drinking habits, I was so glad more of the market was introduced to an alternative approach to drinking. I choose drinks based on flavour, balance and presentation - with mindful drinks I don’t need to worry about watching my consumption and can enjoy another.” “I hope the growth of the mindful and low-ABV sector continues to grow, having more options and more bars embracing a more leisurely approach to drinking!” Harrogate Spring Marketing Exec. Charlotte Porteous said: “We’re thrilled to announce Matthew Lewis as our winner! Matthew has really embraced the brief and has a clear passion for mindful drinking as well as undeniable talent behind the bar. Matthew’s mindful cocktail won the judges over with its subtle sweet and floral flavour – and we love how it was lengthened beautifully with our award-winning sparkling water! We’re so excited to share this delicious low-ABV mindful cocktail with racegoers at Ascot’s Autumn Racing Weekend.” As Official Water of Ascot and Royal Ascot, Harrogate Spring Water will be championing mindful drinking during the October Racing Weekend, encouraging racegoers to properly hydrate to make the most of their day. Matthew’s winning mindful cocktail, the ‘On the Nose’, will be launched at Ascot’s Autumn Race Day on Friday 1st October and will be available for the rest of the year at their cocktail bars, Bit and Bridle and the Juniper Gin Terrace.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: 25 YEARS ON On the morning of the 28th September 1996, there was just one thought on Frankie Dettori’s mind – winning the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Mark Of Esteem and meeting The Queen. Little did he know that by the end of the day his life would be changed forever. That Saturday was then known as the Festival of British Racing at Ascot, a precursor to QIPCO British Champions Day and the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes was the feature race on the card which also included the Diadem Stakes, now known as the British Champions Sprint Stakes. The Cumberland Lodge Stakes, which is now held on this Autumn Racing Weekend in October, was the first race on the card that day and Dettori partnered Wall Street to victory by half a length over Salmon Ladder to begin the remarkable sequence. In hindsight, the second race was where it all nearly fell apart as Diffident, a 12/1 chance, just managed to defy the well-fancied Lucayan Prince by a short head. Walter Swinburn partnered the runner-up and they met trouble in running at every opportunity which allowed Dettori to get first run and he just held on. Next came Mark Of Esteem who was simply too good for his high-class opponents including Bosra Sham and French colt Ashkalani. After that, it was pressure off for Dettori who had delivered the big race victory for Godolphin with Sheikh Mohammed and his family in attendance.
4 2 T H E M AG N I F I C E N T S E V E N
He wasn’t done yet though and the 26-runner Tote Festival Handicap was turned into a procession by the appropriately named Decorated Hero, trained by John Gosden. Fatefully then won the Rosemary Stakes by a neck before Lochangel glided to victory in the Blue Seal Stakes to make it six from six. While those last two winners were largely expected having been sent off as favourites, Dettori’s final mount of the day had been around a 16/1 chance in the morning. With liabilities mounting up in trading rooms across the country though, Fujiyama Crest opened up around 9/2 on course before eventually being sent off at just 2/1 for the Gordon Carter Handicap. He hadn’t won a race since landing the same contest a year before but Sir Michael Stoute had him back in form when it mattered most. Dettori made all on the proven front-runner and just managed to fend off the challenge of Northern Fleet under Pat Eddery to create history. The concept of somebody riding all seven winners on the same card was largely unfathomable to that point but for Dettori to do it on a major Saturday meeting at Ascot was beyond conceivable and it remains one of the foremost achievements in sporting history. Of course, he came close to doing something similar when riding the first four winners on Gold Cup Day at Royal Ascot in 2019 but his luck ran out in the Britannia Stakes that day, much to the relief of the bookmakers. So for now, and likely a long time to come, Dettori’s Magnificent Seven remains a unique accomplishment in British racing.

THE ASCOT ENQUIRY ROSSA RYAN With a number of Group race wins to his name and the support of many of the countries leading trainers Rossa Ryan’s career is on a upwards trajectory. Whilst his 2021 season may have been interrupted, firstly with injury and then an emergency appendix operation, he hasn’t let that stop him looking certain to achieve his first century of winners in one season. We find out about Rossa’s career highlights to date, his racing idol and the race he would most like to win at Ascot. 1. How did you get into racing? I got into racing through my Dad who is a jumps trainer in the West of Ireland. 2. Your favourite Ascot memory so far? Winning on Highland Chief at Royal Ascot . 3. Do you have a racing idol? Ryan Moore. 4. The highlight of your career so far? Hello You winning the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket. 5. Did you always want to be a flat jockey, or did you ever consider being a jump jockey? Always thought I’d be a jump jockey, to be honest, but I managed to hold my weight ok when it came to getting my license and stuck on the flat. 6. Which one race at any Ascot race meeting would you like to win? I would say the King George. 7. One thing about you that our readers might not know? Massive lover of ice cream! 8. The one racehorse from the history books you would have liked to ride? Sea The Stars, best horse in my opinion by far, and proved it all around the world. 9. What advice would you give to a young person who would like to follow in your footsteps and become a jockey? Talent beats work every time but if talent doesn’t work, work beats talent. 10. What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a jockey? Something down the line of construction I would say, it’s the only subject I did well in at school. 52 T H E A SCOT E N Q U I RY
