*Limited number of tickets available at the Early Bird Price.

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the opening day of the November Racing Weekend. As we head into the main part of the Jumps season the high-class action comes thick and fast and we have two days of exciting, informative racing ahead of us. On this card last year we saw Chantry House make a winning start to his career over fences while Metier won the Introductory Hurdle. Both went on to record Grade 1 success later in the season, including at the Cheltenham Festival for Chantry House, so it’s very possible that we could see another future star or two today. The feature race is the Events At Ascot Handicap Chase over two-miles-and-fivefurlongs, worth £25,000. It looks set to be an intriguing contest and last year’s winning trainer, Venetia Williams, saddles the well-fancied Pink Legend while the in form Dan Skelton runs Flegmatik. Dan was the leading trainer at Ascot last season and he is clearly trying hard to regain that title with five runners across the card today. Our thanks go to all of today’s sponsors for their support including A Garden For All Seasons who give their backing to our fifth race. We are also delighted to show our support for the Windsor Horse Rangers and The Not Forgotten charities by the naming of two races after them. You can find out more about those valuable charities in these pages as well as catching up on how Master Minded, unbeaten in four runs at Ascot, is getting on during his retirement through the Retraining of Racehorses article. Tomorrow is another exciting day of racing with a brace of Grade 2 contests in the shape of the Coral Hurdle and Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase. Master Minded was of course a dual winner of that later race in 2010 and 2011 for Paul Nicholls who is the most successful trainer in the race with seven winners since 2006. He features in an extended version of the Ascot Enquiry in this weekend’s racecard. We hope you can join us again tomorrow and if not look forward to seeing you again shortly. Yours Sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman WELCOME

PAGES 22-23

1st Race 12.20pm The The Ascot Shop ‘National Hunt’ Maiden Hurdle (GBB Race)

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress, but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. This contest differs slightly from a standard maiden event in that it is restricted to horses that have been specifically bred for National Hunt racing, and therefore those that have previously run on the Flat are barred from taking part. Many of the runners aged four and upwards in this race run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today. PAGES 28-29

2nd Race 12.55pm The Windsor Horse Rangers Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular contest is a novices’ chase for horses aged four and upwards, run over two miles and about three furlongs. PAGES 36-37

3rd Race 1.30pm The Ascot Fan Pass “Introductory” Hurdle (GBB Race)

An introductory hurdle is a race restricted to horses which have not previously run in more than one hurdle race. This particular two-mile contest is for four-year-olds and upwards. The weights are initially set at 11st for each runner, with fillies and mares receiving a 7lb allowance from their male rivals. However, any runner that was successful on their first start will be allocated a 5lb penalty. PAGES 44-46

4th Race 2.05pm The Events At Ascot Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

This handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145 is run over two miles and about five furlongs. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners’ carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to

2

CONTENTS

ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 48-50

5th Race 2.40pm The Garden For All Seasons Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race)

This hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145 is run over two miles. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 145 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 140. PAGES 54-55

6th Race 3.15pm The Not Forgotten Handicap Chase

This particular handicap steeple chase is to be run over three miles and has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating, this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised, they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 7lb in this race. PAGES 60-61

7th Race 3.50pm The Royal Ascot Racing Club Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race)

The finale this afternoon is a handicap hurdle run over two miles and about five and a half furlongs. The race has been designed for novice three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 115. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

6

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS WINDSOR HORSE RANGERS Windsor Horse Rangers is a volunteer led charity which was set up in 1972 with the aim of educating children on all aspects of horse care and riding in a safe and fun environment. They have 24 horses and ponies who are cared for by 180 children aged between 8 and 18 who spend between three and seven hours each Saturday or Sunday at their farm based at Fifield.

The children are taught from a comprehensive syllabus which includes theory and practical skills. They work towards achievement badges throughout their time at Rangers and are given ranks and promotions to give them more responsibility as they prove themselves. As well as learning about riding and horse care, Rangers learn teamwork, leadership, respect for people and animals, self-esteem, responsibility and many other important life skills. They also spend a lot of time outside doing physical activities. They currently have a waiting list of 750 children which demonstrates the demand for what the charity provides. They have had several children with ‘challenging’ behaviour attending Rangers and have seen them change for the better as they are accepted and given responsibilities within their structure. Although they are not a centre for disabled children, they do have some statemented children with autism, Asperger’s, ADHD and other disabilities who benefit from the activities they provide. 2 6 A S C OT R AC E C O U R S E S U P P O RT S

Ex-Rangers have gone onto to work on or run livery and racing yards and studs. One Ranger groomed horses for The Queen, another rehabilitates horses at a horse sanctuary. Others are vets or vet nurses, equine physiotherapists and even a writer for Horse and Hound magazine. Many Rangers have completed equine related degrees at university and gained a direction in life which they did not have before joining. The children pay a monthly donation which is a fraction of what they would pay for the equivalent at a local riding stable. Donations are kept as low as possible to facilitate as many children as possible to participate. As a result, their monthly running costs are only just covered and anything else they need has to be paid for by fundraising which they carry out all year. They need the extra income to buy new horses and equipment for the children as well as replace worn out fencing and buildings so are always grateful for any support. In recognition of the fantastic service that Windsor Horse Rangers provides, our 12.55pm race has been named “The Windsor Horse Rangers Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase”. The charity is also our official bucket collectors today so please support if you are able. To find out more, visit: www.windsor-horse-rangers.org.uk/

THE ASCOT ENQUIRY PAUL NICHOLLS OBE Paul Nicholls needs little introduction and with a plethora of stable stars in his care both ,past and present, it is no surprise that he is also holds the record for training the most winners of the 1965 Chase. Cerium started the ball rolling back in 2006 and since then Paul produced the likes of Master Minded, Al Ferof, Cyrname and Politologue to all return this valuable prize to the yard at Ditcheat, Somerset. MASTER MINDED

Paul has three daughters, Megan, Olive and Zara, who are all following in their fathers footsteps and his passion for racing. Megan can often be found on our screens commentating for racing television if she isn’t on the track racing. Olive is about to make her debut as a point-to-point jockey having spent her childhood years successfully eventing and the youngest, Zara, is learning her trade racing Shetlands as part of the Shetland Pony Grand National squad. Here we find out about Paul’s favourite Ascot moment, which race down-under he would like to run a horse and the best advice he was given when starting out. 1. Your favourite Ascot moment? When Cyrname beat Altior – what a race! 2. If you could run one horse in a race anywhere in the world, which race would you like a runner in and why? I would love a runner in the Melbourne Cup

32 T H E A SCOT E N Q U I RY

I love gardening and my garden 9. Do you have pre-race superstitions? I always wear a lucky tie 10. If you had not become a racehorse trainer which career path, would you have followed? Never gave that a thought! 11. A young horse to look out for from Team Nicholls this season? Brave Kingdom 12. A young jockey to look out for? Olive Nicholls, who is about to make her point-to-point debut 13. What does being awarded an OBE mean to you? It’s very special and I feel it’s an award for the whole team behind me as well 14. Joining the Careers in Racing team today are a group of Sports Business Management students from the University Campus of Football Business (UCFB), based at Wembley Stadium. The ongoing relationship between the British Horseracing Authority’s Careers in Racing Team and the University enables them to offer students, who are keen to pursue a career in the sports industry, an insight into the opportunities available within horseracing. With talks from industry personnel and a behind the scenes tour the students will be able to see exactly what it takes to operate a raceday at one of the most iconic venues in British sport. To pursue a career in racing students may apply for the British Horseracing Development Programme 2022, which is now open for applications. This Programme, formerly known as the British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme, has been running for over 30 years and provides an invaluable source of talent to the sport and its supporting industry. In fact, several of Ascot’s own employees have taken part in the Programme including Simone Martin, Senior Sales Executive and Matt Powell, Senior Partnerships & Licensing Manager. The British Horseracing Development Programme is an early careers programme for candidates wishing to develop a career in the horseracing industry. ASCOT SUPPORTS – WHERE ARE THEY NOW MASTER MINDED Born in France in 2003, Master Minded started his racing career with leading French trainer Guillaume Macaire before catching the eye of Ditcheat trainer Paul Nicholls and heading to the UK as a 5-year-old. Whilst his UK debut run at Exeter led to an unseating of Sam Thomas, Master Minded soon showed his true talent with wins including the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham and the Clarence House Chase at Ascot the following season. After winning easily, jockey Ruby Walsh famously quoted “this horse is not a machine - he is an aeroplane.” Ascot became a favoured track for Master Minded. The gelding found the Winners’ Enclosure on each of his four appearances at the Berkshire track, including back-to-back wins in the 1965 Chase in 2010 and 2011.

ror.org.uk

Sadly, Master Minded’s racing career came to an end after an injury in the 2011 King George VI Chase, but this was also to be the starting point of his new life with Sophie Haylock, who met him whilst he was a patient at Newmarket Equine Hospital.

MASTER MINDED RECORDING HIS FIRST SUCCESS IN THE 1965 CHASE IN 2010

38 WHERE ARE THEY NOW

While still owned by Clive Smith, who remains actively involved in his charismatic bay’s retirement, Sophie has been looking after Master Minded since 2013. “He is a very polite individual, a gentle giant, a real yard favourite,” says Sophie. “He really loves being out in the field in the summer, enjoying the grass and sunshine. He is not so keen on the cold and rain, but who can blame him! He has a presence about him, he knows he is a legend.” Sophie has had to take particular care to ensure Master Minded’s old injury is managed, meaning the pair mainly enjoy hacking with the odd dressage outing, however Master Minded has returned to Cheltenham on a couple of occasions, taking part in the RoR parade and joining his old stable mates Kauto Star, Denman, and Big Bucks on a ride up Cleeve Hill. Although Sophie has had other ex-racehorses, Master Minded is her first National Hunt horse. While she has found there have been differences in his retraining, the fact that he has returned to any form of ridden work since his injury is an achievement. “Thoroughbreds are very intelligent animals; smart, quick thinking and keen to work. I am very lucky to be able to re-home and train ex-racehorses, and to provide them with a long and happy life after racing.” Master Minded is truly living his best life in retirement.

THE NOT FORGOTTEN A warm welcome to The Not Forgotten In line with tradition, this year “Ascot Racecourse Supports” will again play host to beneficiaries of The Not Forgotten, a national British Armed Forces registered charity for serving and ex-service personnel. Founded in 1920, the charity was established to bring entertainment and relief to the many thousands of soldiers who were wounded and ill after the Great War. Over a century later, they continue to tackle loneliness and isolation among military beneficiaries by offering activities, respite and challenge trips to over 10,000 individuals each year. In what continues to be a challenging time for the charitable sector, The Not Forgotten has spent the past year building on their one hundred year legacy, continuing to provide events and respite breaks for those who have served, and cementing their centenary with a spectacular Son Et Lumiere event at Danny House in West Sussex. The next one hundred years for The Not Forgotten looks to strengthen the charity’s position as a safe space for veterans to come together and spend time with those who understand. December will see a series of Christmas lunches hosted for veterans across the country and symbolise a return to normality in face to face events after a year of disruption. In recognition of the charity’s work, we have named our 3.15pm race “The Not Forgotten Handicap Hurdle Race” in their honour and some of the veterans have been invited to present trophies to winning connections. To find out more about the charity, visit www.thenotforgotten.org
