CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the opening day of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend at Ascot. We are hugely grateful to Howden, one of our Official Partners, who sponsor the Christmas Racing Weekend for the first time. Thanks also go to Lexicon Recruitment who sponsor the closing Listed National Hunt Flat race. We have two days of fantastic racing ahead of us including our first Grade 1 of the season tomorrow, the Howden Long Walk Hurdle. Today, there are a brace of Grade 2 novice contests that are often hugely informative with an eye on the future. The Howden Kennel Gate Novices’ Hurdle in particular has an excellent record of producing top-class performers and recent winners include future Grade 1 winning hurdlers Irving and Yanworth as well as My Drogo last year who is making into a top-class chaser this season. This year it looks set to provide the most informative novice hurdle contest of the season yet with the highly touted Jonbon due to take on I Like To Move It, already a winner at this level, and two of the best bumper horses from last season in Elle Est Belle and Knappers Hill. Grade 1 runner-up Colonel Mustard completes the line-up and all five look likely to have ambitious spring targets at Cheltenham and Aintree so this will be a fascinating early-season clash. The Howden Noel Novices’ Chase also has a rich history of future stars with Simonsig, Politologue and Vinndication on the roll of honour. Thanks to the continued support of our Partners and Sponsors, we were delighted this week to announce record prize money at Ascot in 2022. Prize money is racing’s way of rewarding participants who deliver the sport on a daily basis so we are really pleased to be able to offer owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff in excess of £15 million across our 25 fixtures next year. Tomorrow’s Howden Long Walk Hurdle is hugely anticipated with Paisley Park bidding to become the fourth triple winner of the race alongside Baracouda, Big Buck’s and Reve De Sivola. We hope you can join us then and if not we look forward to seeing you again soon. The afternoon concludes with our traditional carol concert. This year, with mask wearing required in the Grandstand, this will take place at the Bandstand. Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year. Yours Sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

1st Race 12.35pm The Howden Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race
4th Race 2.20pm The Howden Kennel Gate Novices’ Hurdle Race (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
This is a two miles and five and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 36-37
2nd Race 1.10pm The Howden Maiden Hurdle Race (GBB Race)
Grade 2 races are high class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up, and possibly some Cheltenham Festival contenders. Initially, the weights in this one mile and seven and a half furlongs hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 3lb to 5lb depending on previous successes. PAGES 54-55
5th Race 2.55pm The Howden Noel Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and five and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.
This two miles, two and a half furlongs steeple chase is another for novices’. It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not previously won more than two steeple chases. Initially, the weights are set according to sex with fillies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals before previous race winners are allocated a penatly. As this is a Grade 2 contest, a 3/5lb penalty will be awarded to horses who have won a class 1/2 contest previously and four-year-olds will also get a weight allowance.

3rd Race 1.45pm The Howden Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
6th Race 3.30pm The Lexicon Recruitment Championship Open National Hunt Flat Race (Listed Race) (GBB Race)
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and one furlong novices’ handicap steeple chase is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.

CONTENTS
As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race, or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, this race differs from a usual bumper in that it is restricted to those making their debuts this afternoon. Horses that have previously run in a bumper, on the Flat, in hurdle races or steeplechases, or Point-to-Points are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six, and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY
ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. ASCOT MEETS: DAVID HOWDEN David Howden’s face lights up as he talks about the inaugural Howden Christmas Racing Weekend - two days of outstanding Jump racing which will launch the Christmas holidays in earnest.
“Christmas reflects a time of great joy, of happiness and, of course, hope,” he says. “But it is also a time for families and friends to get together, for celebrations and for sharing, and, given the challenges that the Covid-19 pandemic has thrown at the world in the past two years, it is wonderful for us at Howden to be hosting what is very much a family racing weekend at Ascot.” “As ever at Ascot, there is of course a huge focus on high-quality racing, but that family celebration element is also why we are so excited for Howden to play a part this weekend. I have an utter passion for horses - I breed and race them, my daughters compete in eventing and I also love riding, and host the fantastic Cornbury House Horse Trials at my home in Oxfordshire. I am deeply committed to promoting horse sport and opening it up to a broader spectrum of people. What better way for a young child to become enthralled by horseracing than by coming and enjoying our Howden days at Ascot with all their fun and family entertainment?” David is founder of Howden, the largest UK-headquartered insurance broker and the fifth largest employee-owned company in the UK. In June, Howden became an Official Partner at Ascot. “We have really enjoyed partnering with another great British company in Ascot,” says David. “Our partnership aims to promote the best of British, but both Howden and Ascot are businesses which have a very strong international reach as well. “A key thing was for Howden - which has a very large horse sport and bloodstock division - to be able to support the racing industry, and what better way to do that than at Ascot, which has achieved so much to create such a phenomenal experience for those who love its world-class racing. It was a great fit for us - a British company, now the leading UK-headquartered insurance broker in the market, which has been built up with employee ownership at its heart. We are delighted with the way the first year of our partnership is going, in terms of the brand recognition we have received, the entertainment we have been able to give our clients, partners and employees - including at Royal Ascot, of course - and also the feedback we have had in terms of raising our profile, at home and globally.

“We are very much a people-first business - more than 2,000 of our staff are shareholders in our business - and the Howden Family Racing Weekend is really important for that, as it means we are able to invite our colleagues and their families, along with key clients, to come and enjoy a wonderful day’s racing and celebrate Christmas with us.” David’s own breeding and racing operation is blossoming. Perhaps the highlights of 2021 were Mo Celita - a three-year-old filly by Camacho winning a Listed race at Deauville under Hollie Doyle, and two-year-old Wilderness Girl taking a hot fillies’ maiden at Glorious Goodwood when ridden by William Buick. David’s first homebreds are going into training ready for 2022, and are an exciting bunch which include a couple by Roaring Lion and a couple by Zoustar. It was watching Roaring Lion run in the 2000 Guineas in 2018, following a morning on the Newmarket Heath with bloodstock agent, racing manager and stud owner David Redvers, that ignited David Howden’s burning passion for racing. “It’s not just about buying a horse and trying to win a race; it’s the passion for the whole picture and the whole journey,” David explains. “It’s like Cornbury House Horse Trials - it’s a long-term venture with big hopes and aspirations born out of a real love for horses.” Cornbury House Horse Trials held its second extremely successful annual event in September 2021, and David has ambitious plans for its future, centred around his determination to help the very best young British talent - equine and human - achieve full potential. Next year should be an exciting one for David’s equine passions, and for Howden. However, his wishes for 2022 are centred round people. “Clearly everybody hopes that the world might begin to return to normal and that, globally, we will overcome the challenges of the pandemic and be able to operate fully once again, both socially and business-wise,” he says. “I think we have shown huge resilience in a difficult time, in the UK and around the world, and I am very hopeful for 2022. It has been a particularly challenging time for the young. My wife Fiona and I have three daughters of our own [Talitha, Jemima and Kitty] and it has been so difficult for them and for all young people to enjoy their normal lives and continue to develop themselves, their friendships and their education. I hope for them, and for their peers all over the world, that we can regain normality and move forward.”

THE ASCOT ENQUIRY EMMA LAVELLE Paisley Park has become a treasured name on the staying hurdle scene in recent years. After giving trainer Emma Lavelle her first Grade 1 success in the 2018 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot, the team went on to win the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Two years on from their first success, Paisley returned to Ascot and produced a thrilling late run to wear down Thyme Hill and reclaim his Howden Long Walk Hurdle crown. Now the 9-year-old gelding bids to bring a third Long Walk title home to a yard that is no stranger to success. Emma Lavelle is only the third owner of the historic Bonita Racing Stables, previously home to Peter Makin, who produced Royal Ascot winners such as two-time King’s Stand Stakes winner Elbio. Since moving to the historic yard in 2016, Emma Lavelle has had to pinch herself a few times. Here we find out about Emma, from how she started to where she’s going, and which horse she would want to have at Bonita Racing Stables! 1. What has been your favourite five minutes at Ascot? Definitely the first Long Walk Hurdle. Although I went to school just down the road from Ascot, and used to run round the racecourse every day, so the first time I ever achieved running around it without stopping might have been my favourite five minutes! 2. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Winning the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. 3. Who is your racing inspiration? I went to stay with Toby [Balding] for a week when I was about 11, and when I came back from there I said “well, I want to either train racehorses or be the prime minister!” 4. Which horse in training with another trainer would like to have in your yard? Having watched A Plus Tard win at Haydock, it would be difficult to turn him down if that was an option.
PAISLEY PARK

5. How did you celebrate your first Grade 1 win when you won the 2018 Long Walk Hurdle? We’ve always been a yard that’s celebrated well when we’ve had a good winner. Before Covid we had our local which was basically walkable, so we’d go in there; the whole team would be there, and we would have a great night. 6. What’s the characteristic you most look for in a horse? Honesty. You can have the best horse on the gallops but if it doesn’t want it, it will never be the best horse on the track. 7. Do you have any pre-race superstitions? Not really, I’m usually just rushing and haven’t got time for any kind of pre-race activities. 8. Favourite place to watch your runners on a raceday at Ascot? Usually in the stands. 9. If you did not become a racehorse trainer, which career path would you have followed? I probably would have gone into politics, so I am remarkably grateful that I became a racehorse trainer. 10.A young horse to look out for from your yard? We’ve got a lovely four-year-old; his first run was at Ascot. He’s called Nollyador. He is a gorgeous young horse who is only going to improve with time, and I think he has a very bright future. 11. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? The best piece of advice I’ve been given is that bad horses make bad trainers. 12. Your favourite thing about your yard? There’s a part of the grass gallops where you can park at the top of the grass and look down and see all of the gallops. It’s just a really special place. It’s the one place where Barry and I will sit and just pinch ourselves and go “do we really own this?” Those grass gallops have seen some phenomenal horses use them. 13. In 5 years’ time, what would you like to have achieved? More Grade 1’s, a few more Cheltenham Festival winners would be great, and still be operating successfully in this business. 14. Five famous guests you would invite to join you in a box at Ascot for a day? Margaret Thatcher, Martin Luther King, Roger Federer, Vincent O’Brien and Tom Hanks. T H E A SCOT E N Q U I RY 3 3

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS ALZHEIMER DEMENTIA SUPPORT “ADS” Today we welcome Alzheimer Dementia Support “ADS”, a Maidenhead-based charity that provides a wide range of high quality, varied and enjoyable services whilst giving companionship, support, information and advice to people with dementia. They also provide support to carers and families within the local community of Windsor, Ascot, Maidenhead, Slough and Langley. With the outbreak of COVID-19, they kept their group services going as long as was safe, before moving activities on-line and spending increased time on the telephone and at garden gates. Calls to their team increased as people struggled with the isolation of lockdown. As their members have now begun to venture back out again, they are re-opening their group services, but with new risk assessments and additional cleaning. They lost many members during the lockdowns but have new people being referred, often further into the dementia journey than would be normal.

In September, they were delighted to commence a new service in collaboration with Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA). Members can attend the new BCA Health & Social Science building where the students, as a part of their curriculum, work with the person with dementia while their carer has a cup of tea and a chat in another room or takes a walk around the beautiful grounds. With some national charities moving away from local support and local authorities cutting back on funding, the work of charities like ‘ADS’ increases. Raising funds becomes more vital. ADS celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and thanked volunteers in the summer with a part-sponsored cream tea. Members were also treated to a sunny picnic kindly hosted by BCA, with games and entertainment provided by the students. If you would like to speak to the charity about someone you know with dementia or find out more, please visit: www.adscharity.com The charity are our nominated bucket collectors today so please donate if you can.
