CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the second day of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend at Ascot. We are hugely grateful to Howden, an Official Partner of Ascot Racecourse, who are sponsoring the Christmas Racing Weekend for the first time. Today is one of our flagship days of the Jumps season, featuring the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle which will see the very best staying hurdlers line up in a hugely competitive renewal of the race. Two-time victor Paisley Park bids to join Big Buck’s and Reve De Sivola on three victories in this prestigious race with Baracouda out on his own with four. Emma Lavelle’s nine-year-old would certainly be a popular winner and it’s great to see Thomas Darby, who got the better of him at Newbury recently, line up as well alongside On The Blind Side who was second that day. We are thrilled to announce the winners of our local schools Christmas poem competition. The winning entries, as chosen by celebrity judge Clare Balding, begin on page 18. Also today, before racing, presentations will be made to the winners of this year’s Pony Racing Points Series. So many of the current jockeys progressed through the pony racing ranks and we are thrilled to be recognising the future stars of the weighing room. Our thanks also go to Betfair for their continued support of the Betfair Exchange Trophy, the betting highlight of the weekend, as well as Foundation Developments who sponsor our opening contest. Thanks to the continued support of our Partners and Sponsors, we were delighted this week to announce record prize money at Ascot in 2022. Prize money is racing’s way of rewarding participants who deliver the sport on a daily basis so we are really pleased to be able to offer owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff in excess of £15 million across our 25 fixtures next year. There is all sorts of festive fun at the racecourse this afternoon which concludes with our traditional carol concert led by Ascot Brass. This year, with mask wearing required in the Grandstand, this will take place at the Bandstand. Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year, Yours Sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

1st Race 12.40pm The Foundation Developments Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race)
4th Race 2.20pm The Howden Long Walk Hurdle (Grade 1) (GBB Race)
This is a two miles and seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards novices’ which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 44-44
2nd Race 1.10pm The Howden Graduation Chase (GBB Race)
A Graduation Chase is simply a race for horses that have yet to win more than twice over fences. This particular two mile and five furlongs contest is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards. Initially, the weights are set according to age and sex before penalties are awarded to previous winners. Depending on the class of race won, these range from 4lb to 7lb. PAGES 54-56
3rd Race 1.50pm The Howden Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

CONTENTS
The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards to be run over three miles and half a furlong. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premiership in football, quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 7lb, although fillies and mares do receive a 7lb allowance. PAGES 78-80
5th Race 2.55pm The Howden Silver Cup Handicap Chase (Listed Race) (GBB Race)
This is a three miles handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. As this is also a Listed contest, expect some quality handicappers in action. PAGES 86-88
6th Race 3.30pm The Betfair Exchange Trophy (A Handicap Hurdle) (Grade 3) (GBB Race)
Just like the previous race, this one mile and seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle is open to any rated horse. A 4lb penalty will be awarded to any horse that has won after December 5th 2021, which will should make the finale a very competitive race.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY
ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. ASCOT MEETS: DAVID HOWDEN David Howden’s face lights up as he talks about the inaugural Howden Christmas Racing Weekend - two days of outstanding Jump racing which will launch the Christmas holidays in earnest.
“Christmas reflects a time of great joy, of happiness and, of course, hope,” he says. “But it is also a time for families and friends to get together, for celebrations and for sharing, and, given the challenges that the Covid-19 pandemic has thrown at the world in the past two years, it is wonderful for us at Howden to be hosting what is very much a family racing weekend at Ascot.” “As ever at Ascot, there is of course a huge focus on high-quality racing, but that family celebration element is also why we are so excited for Howden to play a part this weekend. I have an utter passion for horses - I breed and race them, my daughters compete in eventing and I also love riding, and host the fantastic Cornbury House Horse Trials at my home in Oxfordshire. I am deeply committed to promoting horse sport and opening it up to a broader spectrum of people. What better way for a young child to become enthralled by horseracing than by coming and enjoying our Howden days at Ascot with all their fun and family entertainment?” David is founder of Howden, the largest UK-headquartered insurance broker and the fifth largest employee-owned company in the UK. In June, Howden became an Official Partner at Ascot. “We have really enjoyed partnering with another great British company in Ascot,” says David. “Our partnership aims to promote the best of British, but both Howden and Ascot are businesses which have a very strong international reach as well. “A key thing was for Howden - which has a very large horse sport and bloodstock division - to be able to support the racing industry, and what better way to do that than at Ascot, which has achieved so much to create such a phenomenal experience for those who love its world-class racing. It was a great fit for us - a British company, now the leading UK-headquartered insurance broker in the market, which has been built up with employee ownership at its heart. We are delighted with the way the first year of our partnership is going, in terms of the brand recognition we have received, the entertainment we have been able to give our clients, partners and employees - including at Royal Ascot, of course - and also the feedback we have had in terms of raising our profile, at home and globally.

A SCOT M E E T S
“We are very much a people-first business - more than 2,000 of our staff are shareholders in our business - and the Howden Family Racing Weekend is really important for that, as it means we are able to invite our colleagues and their families, along with key clients, to come and enjoy a wonderful day’s racing and celebrate Christmas with us.” David’s own breeding and racing operation is blossoming. Perhaps the highlights of 2021 were Mo Celita - a three-year-old filly by Camacho winning a Listed race at Deauville under Hollie Doyle, and two-year-old Wilderness Girl taking a hot fillies’ maiden at Glorious Goodwood when ridden by William Buick. David’s first homebreds are going into training ready for 2022, and are an exciting bunch which include a couple by Roaring Lion and a couple by Zoustar. It was watching Roaring Lion run in the 2000 Guineas in 2018, following a morning on the Newmarket Heath with bloodstock agent, racing manager and stud owner David Redvers, that ignited David Howden’s burning passion for racing. “It’s not just about buying a horse and trying to win a race; it’s the passion for the whole picture and the whole journey,” David explains. “It’s like Cornbury House Horse Trials - it’s a long-term venture with big hopes and aspirations born out of a real love for horses.” Cornbury House Horse Trials held its second extremely successful annual event in September 2021, and David has ambitious plans for its future, centred around his determination to help the very best young British talent - equine and human - achieve full potential. Next year should be an exciting one for David’s equine passions, and for Howden. However, his wishes for 2022 are centred round people. “Clearly everybody hopes that the world might begin to return to normal and that, globally, we will overcome the challenges of the pandemic and be able to operate fully once again, both socially and business-wise,” he says. “I think we have shown huge resilience in a difficult time, in the UK and around the world, and I am very hopeful for 2022. It has been a particularly challenging time for the young. My wife Fiona and I have three daughters of our own [Talitha, Jemima and Kitty] and it has been so difficult for them and for all young people to enjoy their normal lives and continue to develop themselves, their friendships and their education. I hope for them, and for their peers all over the world, that we can regain normality and move forward.”

W H E N R U D LO P H B E CA M E A R AC E H O R S E Rudolph was a reindeer with a bright red nose, With his large antlers he could strike a magnificent pose. But Rudolph was very sad and full of remorse, Because all he really wanted was to be a racehorse. At Christmas time his job was to deliver gifts to all, But his dream was to run in a race and line up in a stall. He longed to feel the hallowed Ascot turf beneath his hooves With Santa on his back and show his dashing moves. Courageously he trained all year to be fit and strong So he could deliver presents all day long. He also wanted to be very quick and fast Just in case he could race and not come in last. Eventually Christmas came and Rudolph was watching the race. The horses lined up, but there was a spare place! He looked to Santa and his friends who said you go on and run So he joined the race, ran like the wind, and he won!

W H E N R U D LO P H B E CA M E A R AC E H O R S E Rudolph the reindeer and his shiny nose. He stopped during his work, just for a quick dose. (He had been working all day without pay.) But upon opening his eyes he could find no sleigh. He searched frantically around looking for deer. But no antlers, no Santa, no elves around here. A short man in bright colours took hold of his head. “Mmmm, you seem a little different” he quietly said. But with a shrug of his shoulders often done by elves. He retrieved a bridle from one of the shelves. He began to tack up Rudolph, pulling too tightly. Then sat upon him, positioning himself lightly. Rudolph was in shock as he trotted around. He paced back and forth, hooves striking the ground. “How did I end up here?” he thought. Then from outside the room he heard a snort. Emerging outside, he had to blink twice. Rudolph’s knees almost buckled, like Bambi on ice. He gazed in awe at the fresh green course. Then settled his eyes on a fine graceful horse.
The audience gave side looks as Rudolph emerged. But still his excitement could not be purged. Him, a reindeer, at Ascot races? He spun with glee, ignoring angry faces. The jockey led the reindeer up to the stalls. Amid the racegoers excited calls. And as the starters orders finally came. He raced ahead hoping to win his fame. But something was wrong, Rudolph was last. All the racehorses were just too fast. Rudolph hung his head in shame. As the crowd jeered and pointed in blame. Suddenly he heard an abrupt, huge pop. All the loud music came to a stop. The screens went off, the lights went out. And the laughing crowd began to pout. People were frantic “please help me” they cried. But they couldn’t see, no matter how hard they tried. Then out of nowhere came something that glows. Rudolph the Reindeer and his bright red nose.

HHHH Has always looked a much better chaser (won five in that scene) but it was a competitive handicap hurdle he won at Leicester 16 days ago and it would have been more convincing had he not fluffed the last (first run after wind surgery); 5lb rise very fair and he’s rated 5lb higher again over fences. THE ASCOT ENQUIRY EMMA LAVELLE Paisley Park has become a treasured name on the staying hurdle scene in recent years. After giving trainer Emma Lavelle her first Grade 1 success in the 2018 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot, the team went on to win the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Two years on from their first success, Paisley returned to Ascot and produced a thrilling late run to wear down Thyme Hill and reclaim his Howden Long Walk Hurdle crown. Now the 9-year-old gelding bids to bring a third Long Walk title home to a yard that is no stranger to success. Emma Lavelle is only the third owner of the historic Bonita Racing Stables, previously home to Peter Makin, who produced Royal Ascot winners such as two-time King’s Stand Stakes winner Elbio. Since moving to the historic yard in 2016, Emma Lavelle has had to pinch herself a few times. Here we find out about Emma, from how she started to where she’s going, and which horse she would want to have at Bonita Racing Stables! 1. What has been your favourite five minutes at Ascot? Definitely the first Long Walk Hurdle. Although I went to school just down the road from Ascot, and used to run round the racecourse every day, so the first time I ever achieved running around it without stopping might have been my favourite five minutes! 2. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Winning the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. 3. Who is your racing inspiration? I went to stay with Toby [Balding] for a week when I was about 11, and when I came back from there I said “well, I want to either train racehorses or be the prime minister!” 4. Which horse in training with another trainer would like to have in your yard? Having watched A Plus Tard win at Haydock, it would be difficult to turn him down if that was an option.
PAISLEY PARK
40 T H E A SCOT E N Q U I RY
5. How did you celebrate your first Grade 1 win when you won the 2018 Long Walk Hurdle? We’ve always been a yard that’s celebrated well when we’ve had a good winner. Before Covid we had our local which was basically walkable, so we’d go in there; the whole team would be there, and we would have a great night. 6. What’s the characteristic you most look for in a horse? Honesty. You can have the best horse on the gallops but if it doesn’t want it, it will never be the best horse on the track. 7. Do you have any pre-race superstitions? Not really, I’m usually just rushing and haven’t got time for any kind of pre-race activities. 8. Favourite place to watch your runners on a raceday at Ascot? Usually in the stands. 9. If you did not become a racehorse trainer, which career path would you have followed? I probably would have gone into politics, so I am remarkably grateful that I became a racehorse trainer. 10.A young horse to look out for from your yard? We’ve got a lovely four-year-old; his first run was at Ascot. He’s called Nollyador. He is a gorgeous young horse who is only going to improve with time, and I think he has a very bright future. 11. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? The best piece of advice I’ve been given is that bad horses make bad trainers. 12. Your favourite thing about your yard? There’s a part of the grass gallops where you can park at the top of the grass and look down and see all of the gallops. It’s just a really special place. It’s the one place where Barry and I will sit and just pinch ourselves and go “do we really own this?” Those grass gallops have seen some phenomenal horses use them. 13. In 5 years’ time, what would you like to have achieved? More Grade 1’s, a few more Cheltenham Festival winners would be great, and still be operating successfully in this business. 14. Five famous guests you would invite to join you in a box at Ascot for a day? Margaret Thatcher, Martin Luther King, Roger Federer, Vincent O’Brien and Tom Hanks. T H E A SCOT E N Q U I RY

THE TSI WORLD BEES ICE HOCKEY CLUB Today we are delighted to welcome “The TSI World Bees Ice Hockey Club” who play home games at the Slough Ice Arena. The Bees play in the top division of the National Ice Hockey League with teams from Sheffield, Peterborough, Basingstoke, Leeds, Telford, Swindon, Romford and Milton Keynes.
Ice Hockey is the fastest and most entertaining indoor sport in the world, and the Bees really want to share this family-friendly and entertaining sport with the local community in Slough, Ascot, Windsor, Maidenhead, Bracknell and beyond. As part of their local presence, they have a very active Schools and Community Team who provide ice hockey related events and sporting activities to the local community and to schools who have joined their Schools Programme (free to all schools in the area). They also raise awareness of the sport via community events at no charge, such as here today where they can be found on the Grandstand Lawns between 10.45-16.00 demonstrating puck handling and shooting targets. Other activities include the Ice Hockey Skill Shot, Ice Hockey Skills Training and where possible, the virtual reality Ice Hockey Goal Keeping experience. These activities and the community programme are fully funded by their sponsors, partners and supporters. Their Mascot, BUZZ, is also very active in the local area and you will also see him today taking part in the Christmas Parade. Buzz attends all of their games and also makes guest appearances at schools and community events. Watch Out! BUZZ can be a little bit cheeky and is always on the lookout for fun and a photo opportunity. BUZZ loves to be at events and entertaining everyone he meets. Nothing makes him happier than a smile and a “fist bump”. If you see BUZZ, be sure to give him that very special fist bump to make his day. Don’t forget to try their activities today, say “Hi” to BUZZ and go to a game… they have a home game every week right through to early April 2022. BEES ICE HOCKEY CLUB 42

HHHH In excellent form over 2m in the spring when runner-up at Aintree (good to soft) before winning at Punchestown (yielding); perhaps even better again when third over 2m1f here in November (good) and, for whatever reason, he just never fired a week later at Newbury; may be better for the longer break this time and he’s a player; regular tongue-tie/cheekpieces discarded. HHHH Has had jumping issues but not when winning as he liked over 2m at Hereford (soft; led halfway) in March and that made it 2-2 under rules racing right-handed, whereas he’s 0-8 going the other way round; has an 8lb higher mark to contend with and lacking a recent run is probably not ideal, but dangerous to discount nonetheless; should stay and acts on all ground. HHHHH Attractively handicapped judged on his beginners’/novice chase wins two years ago (2m4f, heavy/2m3f, good to soft) and both the jockey booking and market vibes suggested his belated return from an absence at Aintree in November was needed; with that respectable effort behind him, back up in distance and reunited with Harry Skelton, there’s good reason to be hopeful. THE HOWDEN LONG WALK HURDLE
PAISLEY PARK
The Howden Long Walk Hurdle is Ascot’s pre-Christmas racing highlight, a Grade 1 contest with a rich history of showcasing some of the sport’s hurdling superstars. The race itself was created in 1965 and is named after The Long Walk, a historic three-mile avenue in Windsor Great Park that runs from Windsor Castle to the Copper Horse Statue of George III at Snow Hill. It switched from a handicap to a conditions race in 1971 and was upgraded to its current Grade 1 status in 1990. Run over an extended trip of three miles and about half a furlong it is a true test of stamina, taking in almost two full circuits of the track, while any jumping inefficiencies are always exposed across the twelve flights of hurdles. Early winners included Lanzarote in 1975 who had won the Champion Hurdle earlier that year while John Cherry, a former Cesarewitch winner on the Flat, became the first dual winner in 1979 following his victory in 1977 under Steve Eccles Smith on both occasions. The winners of the Long Walk Hurdle often go on to be very competitive in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and six horses have gone on to win the staying hurdle crown in March after winning the Long Walk in the same season. That trend started with Derring Rose in 1980-81 and also includes Baracouda and My Way De Solzen from the early 2000’s. Most recently future King George winner Thistlecrack and Paisley Park also completed the double.
6 4 L O N G WA L K H U R D L E
The remarkable Big Buck’s managed it three times between 2009 and 2012 on his way to 18 straight victories, although that Long Walk record is slightly quirky in that his first two successes were at Newbury after Ascot’s Christmas Meeting was lost to snow twice. The race has also travelled around to Windsor in 2004 and Chepstow in 2005 with Ascot closed for redevelopment during that time. The aforementioned Baracouda won the race a record four times for French handler Francois Doumen which makes BIG BUCK’S him the leading trainer in the race. Jenny Pitman is one of several trainers to have won the race three times and her victories included Royal Athlete in 1989 who went on to win the Grand National in 1995. Paul Nicholls and Nick Williams are the other three-time winners with the later sending out the hugely popular Reve De Sivola who joined Big Buck’s on three victories between 2012-14. If Paisley Park lines up this year again he will bid to join that elite group of horses after winning in 2018 and 2020. We hope you enjoy what promises to be another enthralling renewal of Ascot’s first Grade 1 of the season this Saturday.

HHH Good fourth in Grade 3 handicap at Aintree (3m1f, good to soft) in April with these cheekpieces added and, following wind surgery, he won a Class 3 at Kelso (2m5f, soft) by about 4l last month; may have more to offer in the headgear but probably needs a career best now back up in grade. HHH Behind when unseating three out on reappearance at Uttoxeter last month; however, he may have needed that run and this front-running 7yo was progressive last year, with two wins (3m/3m2f, heavy/good to soft); conditions are fine and it’ll be no surprise if he bounces back with a bold bid. HHHH Takes on battle-hardened chasers on this third run over fences, and his recent win at Ayr (3m, good to soft) came in a small field Class 3; however, he’d have been a convincing winner but for idling in front, so should have more left in the tank, and he won here on heavy ground over hurdles. HHHH From one of the great talents as a juvenile to one of the great enigmas, but racing this way round is one of the keys to him; goes very well on soft/heavy, more to prove on good to soft; shaped nicely, as if in need of the race, here after his summer break and performances such as his Wincanton win last February suggest that even this lofty mark would be manageable were he at this top of his game. Official BHA Rating 153

HHH Got up close home with a strong finish in the big 2m handicap at Leopardstown in February and, although the principals had gone well beyond recall, he stayed on well to finish seventh off today’s mark in the County on good to soft at Cheltenham; could have more to give granted a sufficient test and he should benefit from his Flat run in October; respected. HH First three starts as novice (all in the mud) were impressive, culminating in the Grade 1 Tolworth at Sandown at turn of the year; however, remote when just 11-2 for the Supreme at Cheltenham and he then raced freely and kept hanging left (faded before two out) when pulled-up favourite at Sandown two weeks ago; it’s too early to dismiss him but he has questions to answer. HHH Impressive in Grade 2 novice at Kempton in February but three subsequent performances at Cheltenham (the Triumph, a conditions race and when fifth of 19 to West Cork in the Greatwood) show that improvement is needed; he’s just a 4yo, so finding it may be possible. Official BHA Rating 141

HHH Progressive in bumpers last season, fourth in Grade 2 at Aintree in April; hurdling career has also begun well, winning at Worcester before second at Chepstow (2m3f Grade 2) and Exeter (2m, good to soft); he should settle better with a stronger pace likely in this race, which adds to his interest as a handicap debutant.
