CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the second day of the Summer Mile Racing Weekend. Today’s card is headlined by the £140,000 Fred Cowley MBE Summer Mile Stakes, a Group 2 contest over the Old Mile. The race has been won by some smart horses over the years, none more so than Mohaather in 2020 who went on to win the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Richard Hannon Snr is the leading trainer in the race with four winners between 1986 and 2011 and Richard Hannon Jnr looks to continue the excellent record of the yard as they run Chindit who was fourth behind Baaeed in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. A huge thanks go to all of our sponsors today including the Cowley Family, the European Breeders’ Fund, Hi-Speed Services, Betfred, Magnum and Village Hotels. We are also delighted to name our final race today the Ascot Sebastian’s Action Trust Christmas In July Handicap. Sebastian’s Action Trust is a Crowthorne-based charity that provides support for hundreds of families of seriously-ill children, helping them to have quality time together. Tomorrow, we will host the annual Sebastian’s Action Trust ‘Christmas in July’ party which brings together the children and young people the charity care for and their families. It is an incredibly special event and we are extremely proud to host it at the racecourse where everybody attending will have exclusive use of the family facilities in place from today’s raceday. At Newmarket today, Royal Ascot winners will clash in the July Cup as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner, Naval Crown, and the Commonwealth Cup winner, Perfect Power, line up in the July Cup. That Group 1 sprint also features the second and third from the Platinum Jubilee Stakes in Creative Force and the Australian challenger Artorius. It’s a fascinating, high-class race that you will be able to enjoy at 4.25pm on the big screens here at Ascot. Our next meeting is the QIPCO King George Diamond Weekend which features our mid-summer showpiece, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes. At the moment the race is shaping up to be an excellent renewal, headlined by the Derby winner Desert Crown and possibly last year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Torquator Tasso from Germany. We hope to see you there. Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

1st Race 1.50pm The British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (for horses in Bands A, B, C and D) (EBF Restricted Race Qual) (GBB Race)
This seven furlong novice stakes is restricted to two-year-olds which are E.B.F. eligible, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties for each race won. PAGES 36-37
2nd Race 2.25pm The Hi-Speed Services Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile about six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. PAGES 42-45
3rd Race 3.00pm The Betfred Heritage Handicap Stakes
This race is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the 2
CONTENTS
higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 50-51
4th Race 3.35pm The Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile Stakes (Group 2)
This one mile race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 2 contest and will attract some high-class horses. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 3lb and fillies carry 9st, although any runner which has already won a Group 2 race after 2021 will be issued with a 3lb penalty while Group 1 winners will incur a 5lb penalty. PAGES 68-69
5th Race 4.10pm The Magnum Classic Ice Cream Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile about four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 86 to 105. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage. PAGES 74-76
6th Race 4.45pm The Village Hotels Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80. PAGES 80-82
7th Race 5.20pm The Ascot Sebastian’s Action Trust Christmas In July Handicap Stakes
The finale today is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 and the same handicap rules apply.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY
ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 and 2022 having won the race three times between 2018 and 2020.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Platinum Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty The Queen on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013. In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the
curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Re-named again in 2022 as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes, the race became one of two contests at Royal Ascot worth £1 million in prize money and victory went to Godolphin’s Naval Crown. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting, including Campanelle who was successful twice in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the world’s best sprinter, Nature Strip, travelled over from Australia and produced a brilliant performance to win the King’s Stand Stakes. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling eight-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize.

“AUTISM IN RACING” IS BACK Today, we welcome the return of Autism in Racing (AiR), British horseracing’s programme of education and awareness about autism that has commenced its second year of activity.
the addition of new funders the Horserace Writers and Photographers Association (HWPA) and racecourse donations.
As part of the programme, AiR works in collaboration with Immersive Interactive, a market-leader in inclusive experiences. Their mobile sensory unit will be open to pre-booked families with autistic children who can use the unit as a base for the day in the family zone of the Old Paddock. Ascot Racecourse is pleased to announce that this sensory unit will be in situ at all our family racedays in 2022. To raise further awareness of autism in general, we also welcome Autism Berkshire who have a stand adjacent to the sensory unit and are working with us to help signpost those who live with autism to specialist services, training and social/ leisure activities available across the county. Background to AiR Founded by broadcaster Bobby Beevers and managed by Racing Together and the Racecourse Association (RCA), Autism in Racing’s first year proved a success with beneficiaries following pilot events at racecourses across the country. The provision of an e-learning module about pre-condition was also ratified by the Autism Education Trust. Both the Racing Foundation and the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust will continue to part-fund the programme with 3 4 A S C OT R AC E C O U R S E S U P P O RT S
In addition to Ascot, 13 racecourses have signed up to host an Autism in Racing raceday in 2022. Aintree, Doncaster, Haydock Park and Musselburgh will again host events after successful days over the past year and will be joined by Chelmsford City, Chester, Newbury, Newcastle, Newmarket, Southwell, Uttoxeter, Warwick and York. Further venues may also be included as the year progresses. In addition to the increased number of racecourse events, the support and educational elements of Autism in Racing continue to develop. Racing Welfare’s award-winning support line will be available to signpost anyone working within the sport for further information about autism whilst the Racing2Learn e-learning module on autism awareness will be promoted widely throughout British racing. The steering group to advise and guide Autism in Racing has been extended to allow for additional expertise to develop the programme. Carly Jones MBE, a pioneer
within the autistic community due to her work advocating awareness of diagnosis, education and safeguarding of autistic women and girls, will join alongside the National Autistic Society’s Head of Autism Accreditation Christine Flintoft-Smith. Bobby Beevers, founder of Autism in Racing, said: “Our first year was a huge success and we very much hope year two continues on the same track. We have developed a support programme which is accessible to anybody, whether they are autistic or not, to learn more about the condition. The aim is that it will encourage further people to either pursue British racing as a career option or choose to visit for a day out. “To this end, we’re excited to extend our portfolio of racecourses offering Autism in Racing racedays and look forward to welcoming even more families later this year.” Lucy Gurney, Community Engagement Manager at Racing Together, said: “We are extremely grateful to the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, Racing Foundation and the Horserace Writers and Photographers Association for their financial contributions that enable us to bring phase two to life. “As we continue to build upon the pilot year for Autism in Racing we look forward to working with our brilliant partners across the sport and beyond to make racing more accessible and to improve autism awareness.” Paul Swain, Raceday Experience & Communications Manager at the RCA, said: “It is fantastic to see the Autism in Racing programme return for its second year.
We learnt a significant amount from our pilot year which I am confident will positively impact Autism in Racing’s beneficiaries. “Our sustainable but ambitious expansion will see us take Autism in Racing events to treble the number of racecourses as we did in 2021. I look forward to working closely with the racecourses to create further wonderful days out for our guests.” If you are interested in attending as a guest with Autism in Racing at one of Ascot’s future family racedays or for more information on Autism in Racing, visit: racingtogether.co.uk/autism-in-racing To view a summary of the programme go to: youtube/KNdE5Zaa6NQ For more information on Autism Berkshire visit: autismberkshire.org.uk

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

THE FRED COWLEY MBE MEMORIAL SUMMER MILE Born 25th May 1915 Frederick Thomas Cowley was, without doubt, one of this country’s most prominent electrical engineers of the 20th century. Fred, as he was known in the industry was a true leader, a quiet unassuming gentleman with a head for business, who was renowned and respected throughout the electrical engineering industry. Fred started as a young Electrical Engineer with Fosters Transformers during which time he attained Chartered Electrical Engineer Status. This led to him becoming the firm’s Chief Electrical Engineer. Fred left Fosters and in 1951 started his own business, Transformers and Rectifiers Limited, an electrical rewind/repair facility in Guildford. The success of this business necessitated moving to new premises 10 years later where he started building new equipment. As the years progressed, Fred expanded the business further to include electrical generators and test equipment. For his services to industry Fred was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 1999. Fred continued to hold the reins of his business until 2003 when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Despite this, Fred’s wife Anne was determined to retain his presence both in the business and socially which surely contributed to Fred surviving for another 10 years. Sadly, Fred died in February 2013 and Anne sold his business interests in 2016. During their life together, Fred and Anne became avid racegoers and loved the venues of Royal Ascot and the Epsom Derby. It is because of this and in memory of her husband that Anne has dedicated The Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile in his name and has done so for the last 9 years since his death.
Anne ensured that they attended most venues where their horses were racing and those of us who were also present knew that this bought great joy to both of them. Today Anne continues to own a stock of racehorses both here in the UK and jointly in the USA in association with her business partner, Jay Grandfield, In the USA (Coolmore, Kentucky), they share two broodmares, Bow Bells, sired by Giant Causeway and Pharaoh’s Belle, sired by American Pharaoh, both of which are in foal. Currently in training with Todd Pletcher is Justifiable Belle, sired by Justify. They also have an unnamed yearling sired by American Pharaoh. One of Anne’s earlier racehorses, Freddie’s Girl is now a broodmare and is stabled at Abbyville Stud in Ireland. An unnamed colt foal, sired by Starspangledbanner is also at Abbyville. Other horses bred by Freddie’s Girl are Marion’s Boy, sired by Mastercraftsman, Gurkha Girl, sired by The Gurkha and Caragio, sired by Caravaggio. All three horses are being trained by Roger Teal in Lambourn. One of Anne’s more successful horses, Tip To Win, is now at Stud at L M Stallions. Retired Jockey, Micky Fenton has just received his trainer’s licence in Ireland and is looking after Swift Butterfly, a yearling filly out of Iffraaj (not home bred). A yearling filly called Marclaflo Diamond, named after Micky’s three daughters and sired by Ten Sovereigns, will also be joining Micky. To complete Anne’s UK stock Pedestal and Glencoe Boy are in training with Tony Carroll in Worcester.
Together Anne and Fred started to acquire horses of their own and all the Cowley horses wear the white and black boxed breast girth to match the silks. Fred could not recognise the horses when running due to his illness but identified them by the distinguished breast girth. 49

SEBASTIAN’S ACTION TRUST CHRISTMAS IN JULY Sebastian’s Action Trust has been in existence for eighteen years; ensuring that every one of the nearly six hundred families of seriously ill children they support receives the best possible care. The charity provides emotional, social and practical support and remain present for them through the good days, the bad days and everything in between. Since 2018, ‘Ascot Racecourse Supports’, has been an active supporter of the charity via grant funding, raffle prizes and using its national platform to further raise the profile of their work. Ascot staff have also been able to participate in CSR days at their family outreach centre, ‘The Woodlands’ in Crowthorne, Berkshire, helping with gardening and other volunteering duties. Most recently, the charity were the beneficiaries of over £10,000 via our ‘Online Public Donations’ initiative. On Sunday 10th July 2022, the racecourse will host the charity’s annual ‘Christmas in July’ party which it has done for the past three years. This flagship event brings together the children and young people the charity care for – some of whom will not live until December - and their families to have fun, spend time together and make memories that will last a lifetime.
The charity will have exclusive use of dedicated racecourse facilities in place for our Summer Mile Racing Weekend and is grateful for the collaboration and support of certain suppliers, entertainers and concessionaires, who generously agree to return or stay on until the Sunday for the families’ enjoyment. In recognition of the event and as an advanced well done to the charity’s army of volunteers that will descend tomorrow to add sparkle to the day, we have named our 5.20pm race “The Ascot Sebastian’s Action Trust Christmas in July Handicap Stakes.”

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Customer Liaison Team in writing within three days for a refund.
