CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the opening day of QIPCO King George Diamond Weekend. This is one of our showpiece meetings of the year and with in excess of £1.8 million of prize money on offer across the two days it promises to be an exciting and high-quality weekend. Today’s action includes the InterEx Group British EBF Crocker Bulteel Maiden Stakes, an extremely valuable race of its kind which often produces a smart winner. Richard Hannon has won the race six times in the last seven years including with Mums Tipple and Ehraz so look out for Bailey Gate who represents the yard today. It is great to see Ryan Moore in action again at Ascot for the first time since the Royal Meeting where he was the leading rider for the ninth time with seven winners, including the Gold Cup with Kyprios. Ryan is the leading rider at Ascot this season with eight winners in total and he has some excellent chances to add to that tally with five rides today. The card features three races sponsored by John Guest Racing, including the Brown Jack Handicap which is named after the remarkable stayer who won the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot for a record six years running between 1929 and 1934. We are hugely grateful to John Guest Racing for their support as well as our other sponsors InterEx Group, Slingsby Gin and the October Club, hand in hand with Empire Fighting Chance, who dedicate our final race in memory of Gary McGuire. As is now traditional, we are staging a lunch today for the winning Royal Ascot Breeders, all of whom will be presented with a commemorative inscribed Strawberry Dish. Tomorrow is headlined by the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, our Group 1 midsummer showpiece and it looks a high-quality renewal of this great race. Westover and Emily Upjohn will represent the Classic form as they take on some of the very best older horses in the world including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner, Torquator Tasso, and last year’s runner-up Mishriff. We hope you can join us again. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

PAG E S 4 8 - 5 0

1st Race 1.55pm The Interex Group British EBF Crocker Bulteel Maiden Stakes

5th Race 4.15pm The Ascot Handicap Stakes

This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings which are E.B.F. eligible. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and this race is restricted to horses which have not run more than once. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking. PAG E S 3 0 - 3 2

2nd Race 2.30pm The John Guest Racing British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 and is for female amateur jockeys only. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80. PAG E S 52 - 5 4

6th Race 4.50pm The Slingsby Gin Handicap Stakes

This six furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-old fillies which are E.B.F. eligible, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set at 9st 2lb each before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

PAG E S 3 6 - 3 7

PAG E S 5 6 - 57

3rd Race 3.05pm The John Guest Racing Brown Jack Handicap Stakes

7th Race 5.15pm The Sarah Chandler October Club Supporting Sia Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

This is a two miles handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

The final race today is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

PAG E S 4 2 - 4 3

4th Race 3.40pm The John Guest Racing Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage. CONTENTS

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

6

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 and 2022 having won the race three times between 2018 and 2020.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Platinum Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty The Queen on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013. In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the

curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Re-named again in 2022 as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes, the race became one of two contests at Royal Ascot worth £1 million in prize money and victory went to Godolphin’s Naval Crown. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting, including Campanelle who was successful twice in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the world’s best sprinter, Nature Strip, travelled over from Australia and produced a brilliant performance to win the King’s Stand Stakes. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling eight-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade

from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

HHH Stable has farmed this race (seven wins in nine years) but this colt will need to improve significantly on debut form if he’s to further enhance that fine record, having been easy to back at Newbury (6f, good; 14-1) he hung left-handed and finished about 6l off the principals (both stablemates). Charity pilot introducing former racehorse Ouzbeck to Care Home Residents Racing charities Greatwood and Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) are working with the Racing Together team to deliver a pilot programme at OSJCT Coombe End Court care home in Marlborough, Wiltshire.

Greatwood was the first charity to use former racehorses to educate children, young people and adults with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Greatwood is now revisiting its original concept of developing and measuring the benefits of introducing former racehorses to the residents of care homes. The six-week pilot programme, working alongside both RoR and the sport’s community partnership, Racing Together began in September 2021 and continues this summer. Emotional wellbeing, mindfulness and inclusion are at the heart of all Greatwood’s programmes. This pilot aims to explore and measure the impact on, and the benefit to physical and mental health of the residents in the care home, and to use these findings to build and promote wider support. Helen Yeadon, Founder and MD of Greatwood Charity, said: “Following a successful career on the racecourse, Ouzbeck embraces his new path in helping children and young people at Greatwood, and he is enjoying venturing further afield and improving lives within the older community.”

34

This pilot aims to celebrate the racehorse, showcase their versatility and provide another way to connect horseracing with its communities and to the public nationwide. Once evaluated, it is hoped that the programme will be extended to connect more former racehorses with community groups. Lucy Gurney, Community Engagement Manager for Racing Together, added: “The horse-human bond is unique to racing as a large spectator sport, and equine-assisted intervention is a field that is going from strength-to-strength. We are delighted to be growing the knowledge base in this area alongside RoR and Greatwood.” The visits enable the residents to interact with Ouzbeck in a way that suits them, by watching and stroking him, by grooming him and chatting to the Greatwood team. The visit programmes take place across six morning visits, where residents can come out to see Ouzbeck in small groups, assisted by care home and Greatwood staff to make the most from his time spent on the lawn in front of their home. The Care Home team said: “We are very excited about being involved – both residents and staff. The residents will be talking about Ouzbeck’s visit all week. One lady is really excited, having been involved in racing. It is a great confidence boost after Covid and a huge boost for all of us.” Find out more: racingtogether.co.uk

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Customer Liaison Team in writing within three days for a refund.
