CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the final day of QIPCO King George Diamond Weekend. Today is one of the highlights of the British Flat season, featuring our midsummer showpiece event the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes. This historic race has been won by some of the greats of the sport since its inception in 1951 including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard, Shergar, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and Enable. The 2022 renewal features a fascinating clash of the generations with Westover representing the Derby form having been third at Epsom before winning the Irish Derby and Emily Upjohn who was a close second in the Oaks. They meet high-class older horses in the shape of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Torquator Tasso from Germany, last year’s runner-up Mishriff, the Hardwicke Stakes winner Broome and former Coronation Cup winner Pyledriver. It should be a thrilling spectacle. We are delighted to be able to return the prize money for the race to the pre-pandemic level of £1.25 million which will make it the third most valuable race run in Britain this year and are hugely grateful to QIPCO for their continued support. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the great Brigadier Gerard’s victory in the race and to honour his illustrious achievements he is the latest recipient of the QIPCO Diamonds & Pearls Award, presented each year to the winner of a vintage renewal of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes. There is more about Brigadier Gerard’s remarkable career in these pages and the presentation by David Redvers on behalf of QIPCO will be made after the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes to Brigadier Gerard’s groom, Laurence Williamson. The supporting card features two Group 3 contests in the Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes and the Longines Valiant Stakes as well as an extremely competitive Heritage Handicap, the Moët & Chandon International Stakes. Alongside QIPCO, our grateful thanks go to all of our sponsors today including Longines, Keeneland, Moët & Chandon, Flexjet, Porsche and Garrard. Our next meeting is the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup when no fewer than 10 nations will be represented by jockeys from all around the world in this unique team competition. We hope to see you there. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

R AC I N G PAG E S Your guide to all of today’s races

PAG E S 3 4 - 3 6

1st Race 1.50pm The Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes (Group 3)

This six furlongs race for two-year-old fillies is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, each of the fillies will be allocated 9st 2lb before penalties are awarded to those which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners or 5lb for a Group 1 or 2 victory. PAG E S 4 2 - 4 4

2nd Race 2.25pm The Longines Valiant Stakes (Group 3)

The second race on today’s card is also a Group 3 contest, over the one mile trip. This specific race is for fillies and mares aged three-year-old and upwards. Initially, each of the fillies or mares will be allocated a weight depending on age before any penalties are awarded - three-year-olds will carry 8st 11lb, while four-year-old and upwards will carry 9st 5lb. If a horse has won a Pattern contest after 2021, they will recieve the following penalty - 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb to Group 2 winners and 7lb to Group 1 winners. PAG E S 5 4 - 5 8

3rd Race 3.00pm The Moët & Chandon International Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. PAG E S 70 - 7 1

4th Race 3.35pm The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

Victory in a Group 1 race is the pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those horses that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers at stud. PAG E S 76 - 7 7

5th Race 4.10pm The Flexjet Pat Eddery Stakes (Listed Race)(Formerly The Winkfield Stakes)

This seven furlongs contest for two-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially the weights are set at 9st 5lb for colts and geldings and 9st for fillies, before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Pattern race success. PAG E S 82 - 8 4

6th Race 4.45pm The Porsche Handicap Stakes

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85. PAG E S 8 8 - 9 0

7th Race 5.20pm The Garrard Handicap Stakes

This race is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

This one mile and four furlongs race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 1 contest; the highest level of racing. Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland and also from around the world due to the large levels of prize money available. CONTENTS

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 and 2022 having won the race three times between 2018 and 2020.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Platinum Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty The Queen on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013. In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the

curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Re-named again in 2022 as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes, the race became one of two contests at Royal Ascot worth £1 million in prize money and victory went to Godolphin’s Naval Crown. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting, including Campanelle who was successful twice in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the world’s best sprinter, Nature Strip, travelled over from Australia and produced a brilliant performance to win the King’s Stand Stakes. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling eight-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RETRAINING OF RACEHORSES (ROR) PARADE AT 12.45PM A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.45pm. The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). Today’s parade features some familiar names who have adapted to a new career, notably the Group 1 winning sprinter, Limato, and the Queen’s former top class chaser Barbers Shop. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows, RoR: • • • •

Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities; Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses; Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing; and Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care.

RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball. For more information visit: www.ror.org.uk

1.

BARBERS SHOP – RIDDEN BY KATIE JERRAM-HUNNABLE 20-year-old gelding by Saddlers’ Hall, formerly trained by Nicky Henderson Breeder – Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother Leading today’s parade is Barbers Shop. Now aged 20, Barbers Shop was bred by Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother . He raced in the colours of The Queen and was trained by Nicky Henderson, winning eight races and being placed in a King George VI Chase and a Hennessy Gold Cup. Since his retirement from racing in 2012, Barbers Shop has been in the care of top showing producer Katie Jerram-Hunnable and he became one of the leading former racehorses to compete in showing classes. His second career highlights include being crowned champion at Hickstead and three times winner and champion at Royal Windsor Horse Show. He is now retired from competitive showing but regularly participates in RoR parades.

2.

DREAM IN JAPAN – RIDDEN BY WILL JOHNSON 10-year-old gelding by Dalakhani, formerly trained by Antonio Marcialis Breeder – Giuseppe Morese Dream in Japan ran on the flat in France. Following his retirement from racing he was retrained for Horseball by owner Alexandra Oldbury-Davies and has now played two seasons of Horseball and competed in the sport’s Champions League. Dream in Japan is ridden in today’s parade by Will Johnson. Will has played Horseball for 25 years, has represented Team GB and is a successful pro elite coach as well as player.

3.

FORTH BRIDGE – RIDDEN BY CHARLOTTE THORNE 9-year-old gelding by Bernardini, formerly trained by Michael Bell and Charlie Longsdon Breeder – The Queen Forth Bridge ran in the colours of HM The Queen on the flat, over hurdles and over fences and is now looking ahead to a career in dressage. Known at home as William, this handsome horse only joined Louise Robson’s ‘Thoroughbred Dressage’ team in late 2020 but he is already showing a real aptitude for the sport. On only his second outing, Forth Bridge qualified for the RoR Regional Dressage Championships at Preliminary level. He is turning out to be a very level-headed, exceptionally kind and trainable horse and Louise is very excited for his future.

4.

GALLEY PROOF – RIDDEN BY OLIVE NICHOLLS 10-year-old gelding by Galileo, formerly trained by William Haggas Breeder – The Queen A beautifully bred son of Galileo, Galley Proof is a half-brother to another horse in today’s parade, Quadrille. Unplaced in two starts on the flat, Galley Proof has enjoyed more success eventing than he did on the racecourse. Ridden competitively since the turn of the year by Olive Nicholls, daughter of trainer Paul Nicholls, Galley Proof recently finished second in a competitive class at Barbury International Horse Trials.

5.

LIMATO – RIDDEN BY ELLIE GREENHALGH 10-year-old by Tagula, formerly trained by Henry Candy Breeder – Seamus Phelan A top-class sprinter and winner of 14 of his 33 races, including the Group 1 July Cup, Limato has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable since he retired from racing in autumn 2020. Katie reports that Limato settled in quickly and is a real character. Last year Limato took part in RoR showing classes, concluding with a win at the West Wiltshire show, and the plan is to continue down the showing path and hopefully secure some more good results for his supportive owner Paul Jacobs.

6.

ORDERS FROM ROME – RIDDEN BY ALEXANDRA OLDBURY-DAVIES 13-year-old gelding by Holy Roman Emperor, formerly trained by Charlie Fellowes and Eve Johnson Houghton Breeder- Bgd Breeders Orders From Rome ran 29 times on the flat, winning twice and being placed a further five times. Retired from racing in 2014, he is now owned and ridden by Alexandra Oldbury-Davies who has retrained him for Horseball. Together the combination have played Horseball successfully for the past five seasons, including being part of the Team GB Ladies squad in 2017.

7.

QUADRILLE – RIDDEN BY LOUISE ROBSON 15-year-old gelding by Danehill Dancer, formerly trained by Richard Hannon Snr Breeder - The Queen Another former Royal runner, Quadrille was beaten just a short-head in the 2010 running of the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot. The winner of three of his seven starts, this talented performer’s racing career was curtailed by a tendon injury, but it has not stopped Quadrille from thriving in a different discipline. Retrained by Louise Robson, Quadrille is now the highest performing former racehorse on the UK dressage circuit and competes at international Prix St George level. In 2019 he claimed a unique double being crowned both RoR Dressage Elite Champion and RoR Horse of the Year.

8.

SHIPPING FORECAST – RIDDEN BY DULCIE WEST 8-year-old by Harbour Watch, formerly trained by Brian Meehan Breeder – Mr and Mrs G E M Wates Shipping Forecast raced four times as a 2-year-old, winning once at Chepstow. Ahead of his 3-year-old season he sustained a pelvic fracture and due to the severity of the injury he underwent a lengthy rest and rehabilitation. Since the decision to retire him from racing, Shipping Forecast has been in the care of HEROS, the retraining and re-homing centre, where he has become a firm favourite, especially with rider Dulcie West. The partnership has come a long way and they are now heading to Aintree for The Jockey Club RoR National Championships in August. This year “Shipping” has been sponsored by Protexin Products, to help fund his bid to qualify for Aintree and he has become a flagship horse for HEROS, showing that even following injury horses can enjoy fruitful second careers.

Longines is very proud to actively support the world of equestrian sport. As Title Partner, Official Timekeeper or Official Watch of the most important competitions, Longines is constantly strengthening its traditional and enduring commitment to equestrian sport worldwide. The Swiss brand has been associated with the equestrian world since its inception. The oldest known Longines watch decorated with equestrian motifs dates from 1869, and ushered in a handsome series of equestrianthemed pocket watches. The brand’s early ties with horses encouraged the watchmakers of Saint-Imier to pursue advances in sports timekeeping for equestrian competitions. In 1878, the winged hourglass brand developed its first chronograph movement, the legendary 20H. In addition, the Swiss watch brand was associated for the first time with a show jumping event in 1912. As a result of its legitimacy and expertise, Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports today includes flat racing, show jumping, dressage, driving and eventing disciplines. Longines.com/en-gb/

RACE 3

Moët & Chandon has been associated with the equestrian world since 1908 when two three-year-old horses, one named “Moët” and the other “Chandon”, belonging to Monsieur Alfred Simon, the House’s sales representative in London, finished first in Epsom and Newbury respectively. That same year, “Moët” ran fourth in the Hunt Cup at Ascot and as a result, Alfred Simon referred to it as his “lucky” race. The House’s passion for horseracing was further brought to life in 2019, when Moët & Chandon became the ‘Official Champagne of Ascot’. Ascot and Moët & Chandon already share a long-standing legacy filled with exceptional celebratory moments, and we invite you to toast to yet another iconic racing weekend together at the QIPCO King George Diamond Weekend. Please enjoy Moët & Chandon responsibly. www.moet.com

Foaled 29.1.2020. HHHH Smacked of a smart prospect when making a successful debut at Wetherby (5.5f, good to firm) and her Pontefract conqueror went on to finish a respectable sixth in the Coventry; another form-line gives her a bit to find with Lezoo, but she’s worth considering each-way. Foaled 18.4.2020. HHH Has won only once in five starts but she was only a length behind Lezoo (who was making her debut) at Bath in June and has performed to a similar level subsequently, latterly at Listed level; clearly vulnerable to a top-notcher though and she’s tackling 6f for the first time. Foaled 16.4.2020. HHH Out of a half-sister to Dubawi; defied market weakness in some style at Thirsk (6f, good; 9-1), albeit at the expense of an opponent who now has a mark of 71; difficult to know how she’ll deal with this rise in class but she is promising for sure. Official BHA Rating -

Foaled 5.2.2020. HHH Has won both her 6f AW races with something in hand, latterly making all under a penalty at Kempton; this company demands a whole lot more (runner-up last time was well behind Minnetonka on debut) but she’s evidently talented. Official BHA Rating 90

Foaled 10.2.2020. HHHHH Listed winner second time out and it was a muddling 6f Group 2 at the July festival in which she relinquished her unbeaten record; raced freely off steady fractions and did well to threaten all things considered; sets the standard and by some way. Official BHA Rating 101

Foaled 20.3.2020. HHHH The form of her wide-margin debut success at Salisbury (6f, good to firm; made all) hasn’t worked out particularly well and she was put in her place by Lezoo at Newmarket (6f Listed, good), albeit under different tactics; needs to prove that latest run all wrong to stand any chance of winning this, but that’s feasible. Foaled 14.2.2020. HHH Fetched 200,000gns at the breeze-ups and knew her job when controlling matters from the front over 5f here in early May (good); the time wasn’t great and the form has taken some knocks, but she didn’t run at all badly in the Queen May after suffering early interference; stepping up to 6f should be fine. Foaled 22.4.2020. HHH Out of a smart sprinter and cost 290,000gns as a yearling; well touted on her debut at Kempton (6f; 11-10f) and duly won a weak maiden with the minimum of fuss; potentially very useful and, with the yard also responsible for likely favourite Lezoo, it will be interesting to gauge the confidence behind her this time. Official BHA Rating -

Horse Age: 2 Weight: 9 2 Colours: WHITE, EMERALD GREEN star, striped sleeves. Form: 1 D

Foaled 14.5.2020. HHH €240,000 breeze-up buy; made up her ground easily from off the pace and stayed on well to prevail by a head at Newmarket a month ago (6f, good; 17-2), in the same maiden that last year’s winner Zain Claudette won en route; has plenty to find on the figures but it’s difficult to know how good she might be. Charity pilot introducing former racehorse Ouzbeck to Care Home Residents Racing charities Greatwood and Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) are working with the Racing Together team to deliver a pilot programme at OSJCT Coombe End Court care home in Marlborough, Wiltshire.

Greatwood was the first charity to use former racehorses to educate children, young people and adults with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Greatwood is now revisiting its original concept of developing and measuring the benefits of introducing former racehorses to the residents of care homes. The six-week pilot programme, working alongside both RoR and the sport’s community partnership, Racing Together began in September 2021 and continues this summer. Emotional wellbeing, mindfulness and inclusion are at the heart of all Greatwood’s programmes. This pilot aims to explore and measure the impact on, and the benefit to physical and mental health of the residents in the care home, and to use these findings to build and promote wider support. Helen Yeadon, Founder and MD of Greatwood Charity, said: “Following a successful career on the racecourse, Ouzbeck embraces his new path in helping children and young people at Greatwood, and he is enjoying venturing further afield and improving lives within the older community.”

38

This pilot aims to celebrate the racehorse, showcase their versatility and provide another way to connect horseracing with its communities and to the public nationwide. Once evaluated, it is hoped that the programme will be extended to connect more former racehorses with community groups. Lucy Gurney, Community Engagement Manager for Racing Together, added: “The horse-human bond is unique to racing as a large spectator sport, and equine-assisted intervention is a field that is going from strength-to-strength. We are delighted to be growing the knowledge base in this area alongside RoR and Greatwood.” The visits enable the residents to interact with Ouzbeck in a way that suits them, by watching and stroking him, by grooming him and chatting to the Greatwood team. The visit programmes take place across six morning visits, where residents can come out to see Ouzbeck in small groups, assisted by care home and Greatwood staff to make the most from his time spent on the lawn in front of their home. The Care Home team said: “We are very excited about being involved – both residents and staff. The residents will be talking about Ouzbeck’s visit all week. One lady is really excited, having been involved in racing. It is a great confidence boost after Covid and a huge boost for all of us.” Find out more: racingtogether.co.uk

HHHH Often makes the running, including when fourth of seven in Group 2 at the Royal meeting here on latest start (20-1; first run on firmer than good); that was below form but much better than reappearance; she’d be very much the one to beat if reproducing last year’s best efforts, which included her fourth in the Coronation Stakes over C&D, but they were on softer than good. HHHH Sole defeat as 2yo came on her only run on good to firm but that Group 3 fourth looked creditable at the time; this season’s Fred Darling at Newbury (Group 3 runner-up), French 1,000 Guineas (about 2l eighth of 15) and German 1,000 Guineas (favourite; never dangerous from wide draw) all suggest she’s a major contender if her stamina (she can race freely) holds out. THE QIPCO DIAMONDS & PEARLS AWARD - BRIGADIER GERARD BRIGADIER GERARD’S KING GEORGE VI & QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES WIN CELEBRATED 50 YEARS ON WITH QIPCO DIAMONDS & PEARLS AWARD. Each year, to mark QIPCO’s sponsorship of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes the winner of a vintage renewal is commemorated. To honour his illustrious achievements and victory in the race 50 years ago, BRIGADIER GERARD became the latest recipient of the QIPCO Diamonds & Pearls Award, won last year by Mill Reef. Trained by Major Dick Hern for owner-breeder John Hislop, Brigadier Gerard won 17 of 18 races in his racing career, including victory in the 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes, Goodwood Mile, and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. The son of Queen’s Hussar was also a winner of the Champion Stakes when stepping up in distance to 10 furlongs. Later referred to as the British Horse of the Century, Brigadier Gerard was 8-13 favourite for Ascot’s 1972 renewal of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. In a thrilling renewal, five out of the nine runners that year were Classic winners. Brigadier Gerard, partnered by regular jockey Joe Mercer, won by one and a half lengths after a lengthy Stewards Enquiry, having rallied with Parnell in the final two furlongs. Brigadier Gerard retired to stand at Egerton Stud in Newmarket before moving to John Hislop’s stud at East Woodhay. His most notable progeny includes, Light Cavalry, winner of the

St Leger in 1980, and Vayrann, winner of the Champion Stakes in 1981. Brigadier Gerard died in 1989. Anne Mercer, wife of the late Joe Mercer, said: “Brigadier Gerard was Joe’s favourite racehorse – a horse of a lifetime. Our family has so many happy memories of the Brigadier and we are delighted that he has now received the QIPCO Diamonds and Pearls award”. Laurence Williamson, Brigadier Gerard’s Groom said; “Brigadier Gerard campaigned in an unprecedented ‘golden’ era. From humble beginnings, out of a half-blind maiden mare of limited ability and a talented but inexpensive sire, anything Brigadier Gerard lacked in breeding, he more than made up for in appearance and performance. His world-class trainer, Major Dick Hern, hailed him as a champion of champions. I will be proud and humbled to be at Ascot when the horse I believe to be one of the greatest racehorses of modern times receives the QIPCO Diamonds and Pearls Award”.

THE KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH QIPCO STAKES ADAYAR WINNING THE 2021 RENEWAL, RIDDEN BY WILLIAM BUICK

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, Europe’s indisputable midsummer middle-distance showpiece, is one of the most prestigious prizes in racing. The Group 1 contest has been won by some of the sport’s most legendary names and to this day attracts the best horses in training to compete for a place among the greats. The race was founded in 1951, when two existing races were merged to create a premier mile-and-a-half contest for three-year-olds and upwards. Major John Crocker Bulteel, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course at the time and one of the most forward-thinking racing figures of his day, envisaged the ‘King George’ as a championship race that would draw considerable international support. Sure enough, from its earliest days it attracted participants of the very highest calibre from across Europe and soon established itself as the principal mid-season weight-for-age test for middle-distance horses. It is also significant in giving the Classic generation one of the first opportunities to take on their elders in what often proves to be a thrilling clash of the generations. Three-year-olds carry 8st 12lb compared to the 9st 9lb allocated to those aged four and above, while fillies and mares receive a 3lb allowance. The inaugural running was worth £25,000, making it the most valuable race ever run in Britain. It attracted a stellar international field including the previous season’s Arc winner from France, Tantieme, and the Derby winner, Arctic Prince, however the race was won by Supreme Court. The following two years saw that season’s Derby winner triumph, before Her Majesty The Queen’s colt Aureole delivered a famous royal victory in 1954. The undefeated Italian champion and dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Ribot won the 1956 renewal, his one and only start on British turf. Lester Piggott was to enjoy the first three of his seven King George wins in the 1960s, the first coming aboard Irish Derby winner Meadow Court in 1965. However, his winning ride on Nijinsky in 1970 would mark the start of a particularly golden era in the race’s history across the subsequent two decades. The illustrious son of Northern Dancer won the King George at a virtual canter the same season as claiming the Triple Crown, a feat to have eluded every other colt to have attempted it in the fifty years since. 6 8 T H E K I N G G E O R G E V I A N D Q U E E N E L I Z A B E T H Q I P C O S TA K E S

Another outstanding Derby winner landed the spoils just a year later, as Mill Reef swept to victory in 1971 en route to a decisive Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe win. The 1975 renewal, often since described as ‘The Race of the Century’, provided one of the most thrilling finishes of all time, as Grundy and Bustino locked horns in a titanic battle to the line, smashing the course record in the process, with Grundy edging ahead close to the line to emerge triumphant. Following a sensational ten-length Derby victory in the hands of 19-year-old Walter Swinburn, which he followed up in the Irish equivalent, Shergar was an emphatic winner in 1981, giving trainer Sir Michael Stoute the first of his record six King George wins. Later that decade came victories for two more greats – the subsequent Arc hero Dancing Brave (1986) and the brilliant Nashwan (1989), the only horse to have won the 2,000 Guineas, Derby, Coral-Eclipse and King George in the same season. Twenty years ago, Montjeu claimed the 50th renewal in devastating style, dismissing his rivals with consummate ease under Mick Kinane. The following year, the same jockey partnered the dual Derby champion Galileo to defeat the high-class five-year-old Fantastic Light. Aidan O’Brien’s first King George winner went on to become the dominant stallion of his era before passing away last year, siring a record number of Group 1 winners including the incomparable Frankel as well as Highland Reel and Nathaniel who both won the King George. In 2010, Harbinger stunned Ascot with a breathtaking 11-length King George victory, the biggest winning margin in the race’s history. He also broke the course record set by Grundy in that epic finish of 35 years previous, but it was only another three years before a new record time was posted, when Novellist became the second German-trained winner in as many years, following Danedream’s success in 2012. Most recently, the John Gosden-trained Enable, made history by winning the race for a third time in 2020. Her victory in 2019 has been billed as a ‘Race for the Ages’ as she narrowly prevailed in a thrilling duel with the gallant Crystal Ocean. After victory over Sovereign and Japan in 2020 she now stands as the only horse to have won the race three times and in doing so she provided her jockey Frankie Dettori with a seventh victory in the race, equalling Lester Piggott’s tally. Last year, Adayar became the first Derby winner to follow up at Ascot since Galileo as he defeated Mishriff and Love in what was the highest rated race run anywhere in Britain during 2021. Whichever of today’s runners adds their name to its illustrious roll of honour, we can look forward to another exceptional and exciting renewal of this magnificent race.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade 7 8 E Q U I N E A N D H U M A N W E L FA R E

from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Customer Liaison Team in writing within three days for a refund.
