E L C O M E
Welcome to the second day of the November Racing Weekend.
We have a superb day of Jumps racing ahead of us, headlined by the Coral Hurdle and Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase. Both Grade 2 contests, they have been won by a host of stars in seasons gone by and have attracted some hugely exciting horses again today.
Constitution Hill, the runaway winner of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in March, gets his season underway in the Coral Hurdle as he sets out on the path to the Champion Hurdle. In doing so he attempts to join an illustrious roll of honour that includes Grade 1 stars Yanworth, Faugheen, Annie Power, Overturn and Hardy Eustace in recent years
L’Homme Presse, the leading British novice chaser last season after victory at the Cheltenham Festival, also begins his season in the Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase while the Arkle winner, Edwardstone, runs in the hugely valuable Jim Barry Wines Hurst Park Handicap Chase. Grateful thanks go to all of our sponsors for their support including RaceShare.com, Mariner Systems (UK), Chanelle Pharma, Coral and Jim Barry Wines
Off the track, we are hosting the Ebony Horse Club, an inner city riding club near Brixton, on their annual visit to Ascot. Students will be able to see behind the scenes at the racecourse and learn more about the sport during the day. In celebration of the charity’s work, we have named our second race after them. We were thrilled to see Ebonello’s timely win on her hurdling debut at Wincanton on Thursday. She runs for the Friends Of Ebony Horse Club syndicate and could be an exciting horse to follow for all involved. This weekend also forms part of the ‘In The Paddock Shared Ownership Days’ initiative being run by Great British Racing alongside the Racehorse Ownership Association and Racehorse Syndicates Association.
Around 20 syndicates and racing clubs will be based on the Grandstand Concourse where you can find out more about what they have to offer while presenter Frankie Foster will host a series of talks with syndicate managers and trainers A parade of horses that have shares available for sale will take place before racing so head to the Parade Ring from 11.30am to see that.
Our next meeting is the Christmas Racing Weekend in December featuring the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle. We hope to see you there.
Yours sincerely,
Sir
Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman32-72

From £39 Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race)
Our first race of the day is a novice hurdle. Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks
Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular contest is a novices’ hurdle for horses aged four and upwards, run over two miles and about five and a half furlongs See how some of the runners carry a penalty for their recent success
PAGES 38-39
2nd Race 12.55pm
The Ebony Horse Club Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
Our second race is a limited handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and there is no rating restrictions In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
PAGES 44 45
3rd Race 1.30pm
The Mariner Systems Mares’ Handicap Hurdle
This race is restricted to fillies and mares aged four and above, which have been rated from 0 to 130. Today’s race is run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms, a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125
The Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase (Class 1) (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
Our feature race of the day is a Grade 2 contest for horses running over the intermediate trip This race is a high-class contest and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up. Initially, the weights in this two-mile-five-furlong steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success
PAGES 58-59
5th Race 2.40pm
The Coral Hurdle (Class 1) (Registered as The Ascot Hurdle) (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
Like the previous contest, this is another Grade 2 event, although this is a hurdle race to be run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs The penalty structure remains the same, but there would be no allowances for any four-year-olds taking part, hence why there might not be any declared today.
PAGES 64-66
6th Race 3.15pm
The Jim Barry Wines Hurst Park Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
Our penultimate race is a handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards, run over two miles and half a furlong. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, but like our second race, this has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.
PAGES 70 72
7th Race 3.50pm
The In The Paddock Ownership Day Series Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race)
The finale this afternoon is a National Hunt flat race run over two miles The race has been designed to give horses an introduction under rules before they tackle hurdles and fences later down the line. This race is for four, five and six year olds and fillies and mares’ receive their usual 7lb allowance. As Odin’s Quest is the only previous bumper winner in the field, he will recieve a 4lb pentaly.
PARK 3
King Edward VII Enclosure racegoers are invited to enjoy facilities on Level 4 of the Grandstand.
ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS
Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING
The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today.
The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate.
Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of
Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
ROYAL ASCOT
The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768
The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 and 2022 having won the race three times between 2018 and 2020.

MANAGING ASCOT
Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure.
The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as His Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. His Majesty The King is the thirteenth monarch that Ascot has operated under having succeeded Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Late Majesty took a keen interest in the races and had great success with her own horses over the years, including most famously winning the Gold Cup with Estimate in 2013.
The jockeys riding the Sovereign’s horses can be identified by the royal racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent.
During Royal Ascot, the Monarch traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Platinum Jubilee Stakes New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep.
Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20th June 2006.
HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006
There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when Queen Elizabeth II won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season.
The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot.
2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, with the
Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar Renamed again in 2022 as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes, the race became one of two contests at Royal Ascot worth £1 million in prize money and victory went to Godolphin’s Naval Crown. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting, including Campanelle who was successful twice in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the world’s best sprinter, Nature Strip, travelled over from Australia and produced a brilliant performance to win the King’s Stand Stakes
It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling eight-race contest.
While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month.
The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and more recently the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize.

BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Ebony Horse Club (EHC) is a charity based in Brixton, south London that aims to raise aspirations, build life skills and provide new opportunities to youngsters from the local area. They do this by using a combination of horses, riding, horse care and youth work support. EHC targets its activities at those who need it the most and the vast majority of their families are classed as low income. These families would not have the means to access traditional riding schools, but EHC brings the horses into the community Whilst riding is the main activity, the key to EHC’s success is the youth work that underpins all its work. Youngsters have access to workshops, mentoring, trips away from inner city London and work experience placements. To find out more visit: www.ebonyhorseclub.org.uk

Today we are delighted to welcome students from Ebony Horse Club (EHC), based in Brixton, South London and raise the profile of their special club
EHC know what a profound impact horses can have on young lives, which is why their youth centre looks a little different to most. Nestled in a busy corner of Brixton you’ll find their yard, home to 10 horses and serving over 150 local young people a week. Through access to horses, they seek to improve the lives of some of the area’s most in need children and young people. They use riding and horsemanship as tools to develop and improve key life skills such as problem solving, confidence building and empathy, all while seeking to improve the overall emotional and physical wellbeing of members in a safe and fun environment.
EHC feels it is important their young people see their full potential and work alongside them to fulfil their goals, both in a personal and professional sense. They do this through the direct delivery of a number of programmes that make up their core services:
• Members’ lessons They deliver weekly riding lessons to over 95 regular members from the local community, some are just beginning their EHC journey, whilst others are learning to jump, hacking out around the streets of Brixton and even competing.
• Young volunteering They have a structured young volunteer programme for 30 regular members to learn about what it takes to work in the equine industry. They get stuck in with everything from mucking out to supporting beginner riders in lessons.
• Trips and outings Their trips are all about providing fun new opportunities and broadening horizons. Whether they’re having some downtime away from buzzing South London in the country, or discovering new parts of the city, they make sure to keep their schedule as full and as exciting as possible.
• The RIDE programme They work with a number of local schools and youth organisations to support at least 60 local children a week, many of whom will never have had access to horses before.
• Youth work Youth work practice is the golden thread through everything they do and is built into all their activities. EHC provides dedicated youth work support to help young people growing up in challenging circumstances, both in a group setting as well as 1:1 mentoring.
In 2022 alone, they have hosted close to 2,000 rides, trips and activities for members and the community they serve with almost 1,500 young people through the doors As they head into 2023, they hope to not only continue their work, but to expand upon it and offer support to even more young people in south London who need them.
In recognition of the charity’s work, we have named our 12.55pm race: The Ebony Horse Club Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase.
To hear more about their work, or to find out how you can support, please email Sid Holdsworth, COO sid@ebonyhorseclub.org or visit www.ebonyhorseclub.org

British Racecourses and Blue Light Card are delighted to announce an extension of a complimentary ticket scheme for UK’s emergency services, NHS workers and social carers into 2023.
Throughout 2022, the Racecourse Association (RCA) and Racing Together have collaborated with Blue Light Card to offer key workers the opportunity to visit the racecourse of their choice. All 59 British racecourses have participated, demonstrating their gratitude towards key workers in helping the country through the difficult months of the pandemic. With overwhelmingly positive feedback amongst beneficiaries, the RCA Board unanimously agreed that the scheme should be extended into 2023 to allow further key workers to enjoy a fantastic day out, creating thousands of new racing fans in the process
In its inaugural year, the scheme has been incredibly popular with key workers and has exceeded 20,000 redemptions already. Long seen as the traditional end of the Flat racing season, Doncaster’s BetGoodwin November Handicap raceday on Saturday 5th November hosted an additional 250 beneficiaries to enjoy a complimentary raceday with some extra special elements added to befit the occasion.
To view all racedays available to Blue Light Card holders, please visit the website here: https://bluelighttickets.co.uk/category/equestrian
Paul Swain, Raceday Experience & Communications Manager at the RCA, said: “It has been wonderful to partner with Blue Light Card throughout 2022 and welcome so many key workers to the races. The country, and our sport, owes a great deal to these individuals for their tireless work to support each of us.”
Lucy Gurney, Community Engagement Manager for Racing Together, added: “We’re so proud of British racing’s enthusiasm to say thank you to key and emergency workers through Blue Light Tickets. To be celebrating 20,000 free tickets taken up through the scheme in year one is a testament to the generosity of racecourses and the popularity of racing as a day out for fans, new and returning.”
Tom Dalby, Blue Light Card Chief Executive, said: “As our members continue to go above and beyond to keep our communities healthy, safe and supported we are pleased to work alongside the RCA and Racing Together, to offer complimentary tickets for our members, and their families, to enjoy. We are delighted that the partnership will continue into 2023.”
Beneficiary testimonial
“I have really enjoyed attending events at racecourses this year. I work at a surgery near Salisbury in carer support and coordination and my guest each time I go is a patient carer. He enjoys this time so much and it benefits his health and wellbeing greatly. Last night I attended Carer Support Wiltshire’s awards night and received a Platinum award for the work I do with patient carers. You have helped me greatly by offering these free events that benefit the local community I love going because the races remind me of my late Dad who was an avid horseracing fan. I have many wonderful memories of years gone by, spent at the Salisbury racecourse, cheering on my favourite horses alongside my much-missed Dad. For these memories and for enabling me to provide important respite activities to carers, I thank you sincerely.”

RACE PREDICTOR
20,000 and Counting!
20,000 free horse racing tickets have been redeemed this year by Blue Light Card holders, in recognition of their service to the country. A huge thanks to all 59 British racecourses for participating, and we look forward to welcoming more of the Blue Light community in 2023.
S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare
is paramount throughout the year at Ascot.
In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, as previously, some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses
For Jump racing, we introduced the one-fit padded hurdles for the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so Vets generally find fewer superficial
injuries with horses running over padded hurdles compared to the traditional birch hurdle.
At the start of the 2022/23 season, we switched from orange to white markings on our wood and vinyl padding of take-off boards, guard rails and top boards Research from Exeter University showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses.
During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
