QUEEN ELIZABETH II with a special QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame exhibition located in the centre of the grandstand.
QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS DAY FOREWORD FROM ROD STREET
Welcome to QIPCO British Champions Day. It is a pleasure to have you join us on what is sure to be an exciting day of horseracing.
Today is the first QIPCO British Champions Day since the death of our late monarch, Queen Elizabeth II We were privileged that Her Majesty attended every staging of this raceday, except for 2020 when we raced behind closed doors.
Last year, on what proved to be her final visit to a racecourse, we were proud to include her in the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame, reflecting her immeasurable contribution to the sport over seven decades. Today we celebrate Her Late Majesty in the Hall of Fame Exhibition, which you can find on the ground floor of the grandstand I am sure you will join us in celebrating her role as the treasured figurehead of horseracing and for her dedication to the sport.
We are delighted to announce two more inductees into the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame today. The first is former jockey Willie Carson OBE who won a total of 17 British Classics and became the first man to win a Classic on a horse he bred himself The second inductee is the late Sir Henry Cecil, who is regarded as one of the greatest trainers in history, having been Champion Trainer 10 times and trainer of 25 domestic Classic winners. And no-one will forget the success he had with Frankel, who was the first inductee in the Hall of Fame We are extremely privileged to welcome Lady Cecil to Ascot today to receive his honour.
Champions Day has been blessed with the participation of many of the world’s best racehorses since its inception It is fitting that 10 years since Frankel made his last racecourse appearance in the QIPCO Champion Stakes, that this year Baaeed, who is currently unbeaten in a ten-race career and is the highest-rated horse in Europe right now, will bid to sign off his career in similar fashion this afternoon.
There is a host of activity taking place away from the racing today: We will be celebrating the legend of staying races, Stradivarius, who will be paraded during the afternoon, and we have a new extended fan zone, as well as multiple jockey masterclasses and a parade of former QIPCO British Champion Series racehorses. Ahead of racing, we will also be crowning the Champion Jockey, Apprentice and Owner.
We are immensely grateful to have the continued support of QIPCO who sponsor both British Champions Series and Champions Day and appreciate the commitment and unwavering enthusiasm of Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah al Thani and his brothers.
Our thanks also go to all the owners, trainers and stable staff for continuing to support the day. We wish them and you the best of luck today and thank you for being with us at Ascot. We hope that you have an enjoyable day.
ROD STREET, CHIEF EXECUTIVE BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES
e, g
Welcome from HH Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani, Chief Executive Officer, QIPCO Holding
On behalf of my brothers and fellow Directors of QIPCO, I welcome you all to Ascot for the 2016 running of QIPCO British Champions Day.
On behalf of my brothers and fellow directors of QIPCO, welcome to QIPCO British Champions Day.
As title sponsors we are delighted at how QIPCO British Champions Day has evolved and grown and once again there are several reasons to look forward to this year’s running, the sixth since its launch in 2011.
It is with great sadness that we reflect on Her Late Majesty The Queen’s passing. During her life The Queen derived immense joy and great success from horseracing. A consummate horsewoman with a deep intuition for bloodstock and breeding, she celebrated more than 1,800 winners, including 24 at Royal Ascot, and won all bar one of the British Classics. Her success on the track was celebrated throughout the industry and we are privileged to have so many memories of Her Late Majesty at Ascot; on QIPCO British Champions Day and at Royal Ascot.
First and foremost, there is the quality and competitiveness of the racing This year there were a record number of horses entered (256) when entries closed in August, including the winners of 79 Group 1 races and 15 European Classics. Today’s runners will be competing for prize money totaling £4.2m, the richest raceday in Britain, and the action will be played out in front of what is expected to be a record crowd after two of the enclosures sold out weeks in advance.
Our fortune in sharing her passion for our wonderful sport, and her love for the thoroughbred, cannot be overstated. A passion that permits us to celebrate here at Ascot Racecourse today, a place she held with deep affection. A true ambassador of our sport, her devotion and support raised the global profile of horseracing. We will forever be thankful
The QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame was launched on the 10th anniversary to recognise excellence and celebrate champions of the sport. It was an honour to have been able to induct Her Late Majesty The Queen to the Hall of Fame last year, in recognition of her extraordinary and special contribution to British Flat Racing.
While it is with heartfelt sorrow that we will no longer enjoy Her Late Majesty The Queen’s presence at our racecourses, the ongoing sight of the Royal silks reminds us of her enduring significance and the far-reaching impact she leaves on our sport We wish Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort every success as they build on Her Late Majesty The Queen’s considerable legacies.
As a business, QIPCO has invested in British Champions Series and British Champions Day to promote the sport and to promote the company and although both our racing and bloodstock operations are subsidiaries of QIPCO, it is as a family that we share in the thrill of ownership
This is the 12th running of the QIPCO British Champions Series and today we celebrate the crowning of Champions on what continues to be Britain’s
richest race day. This year’s series has been as thrilling as ever We have enjoyed international success from the likes of Australian sprinter Nature Strip, winner of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, and witnessed Stradivarius, who will be paraded here today, win a record-breaking sixteenth QIPCO British Champions Series race
My brothers and I have been fortunate enough to experience the highs that accompany the thrill of a winner on QIPCO British Champions Day firstly, in conjunction with our father when Charm Spirit won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in 2014 and then last year when Simple Verse won the Fillies’ and Mares’.
QIPCO British Champions Day is no stranger to superstars and today is no different In 2012 the unbeaten Frankel bid his farewell after victory in the QIPCO Champion Stakes and today we may say goodbye to another star. Baaeed, last year’s winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and now the world’s second highest rated racehorse, bids to maintain his unbeaten record in the same race His performances have captured us all and I wish his connections the best of luck today.
Simple Verse returns to Ascot this year and we are excited at the prospect of her seeing her run again. Meanwhile, Charm Spirit returns to Britain, after a season in France, to stand at stud in 2017 alongside our other Qatar Bloodstock stallions at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire. It is a dream and ambition of ours to breed stock of the calibre good enough to win on QIPCO British Champions Day.
It is in the breeding sheds that we nurture future generations, and it was with huge delight that Qatar Racing’s Zoustar recently celebrated his first Northern Hemisphere Group 1 winner with Lezoo winning the Cheveley Park Stakes. There is also great excitement around our Classic winner Kameko’s first foals, who we welcomed earlier this year
A day of spectacular, high quality racing lies ahead and we wish all the participants and racegoers the best of luck, without your support QIPCO British Champions Day could not have progressed in the manner it has.
From four legged champions to two. Our many congratulations to William Buick who will be crowned Champion jockey, a hugely deserved and impressive feat We are also delighted to celebrate the legacy of the late Sir Henry Cecil and to welcome Willie Carson as the latest inductees to the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame.
QIPCO British Champions Day sees the best racehorses, jockeys, and trainers coming together to compete on a global stage, marking the completion of another fantastic European racing season. We are immensely proud of the Series and of the day itself, and I am certain we will see yet more top-class and thrilling action today. We wish all the connections the best of luck.

Official BHA Rating 140
BHA Rating: The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHAT IS WORLD POOL?
World Pool enables racegoers to bet into a global pool consisting of over 20 countries, resulting in significantly bigger pools and increasing the total amount to be won, which is then shared between the winners (like the lottery).
Place any of the following bets
WIN, PLACE, FIRST TWO, FIRST THREE, TWO FROM THREE and the TREBLE at any Bet With Ascot kiosk on course to enter the World Pool for that race.
World Pool is available for all six QIPCO British Champions Day races with estimated pool sizes of £1million expected. Bet With Ascot screens will indicate pool sizes for each race.
The Placepot, Jackpot and Quadpot will be managed by using the standard Bet With Ascot rules.
Under World Pool rules, in races with exactly 7 declared runners, the place market will pay three places. The place terms for all races are as follows:
1-4 declared runnersNo place pool
5 & 6 declared runners
1st or 2nd (void if less than 4 runners)
7-20 declared runners
1st, 2nd or 3rd (3 places remain if 5 or 6 runners, void if less than 5 runners)
21 or more declared runners
1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th (4 places remain for 20 or less runners)
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE PARADE RING
Horses will usually arrive in the Parade Ring around 15 to 20 minutes before the start time of the race. They will parade until roughly five minutes before the start of the race, at which point the bell will ring and the jockeys will mount.
What to look out for?
There is no exact science but here are some of the things to look out for if you’re trying to select a horse.
Does your horse look fit?
Clear muscle definition on its shoulders and over its hindquarters all suggest a horse that is fit and healthy.
It should not carry too much ‘condition’ or extra weight and its walk should be athletic
What does its coat look like?
Look for a sleek, shiny coat which is a sign of good health.
Is your horse relaxed?
The big occasion can get to some horses If it is sweating before it has left the Parade Ring or jig-jogging around, it might be expending too much energy before it has even run in the race.
Horse looks relaxed Muscle definition on the shoulders and hindquarters Coat looks sleek and shinyTHE QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS LONG DISTANCE CUP
HISTORY OF THE RACE
Established in 1873 as the Jockey Club Cup, this race was run at Newmarket until 2011, when it was moved to Ascot and renamed the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup.
The variety of contests in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance category vary in distance from the one mile and six furlongs (2,800m) of Doncaster's Cazoo St Leger to the two and a half miles (4,000m) of the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.
The intermediate two-mile distance of the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup therefore provides the perfect distance for the category finale. In 2018, the staying king and QIPCO British Champions Series stalwart, Stradivarius rounded off a memorable campaign to win this race. Remarkably, this was his fifth QIPCO British Champions Series race win in a single season In 2019 he was, however, overturned by Kew Gardens for Aidan O'Brien by the smallest of margins in a thrilling battle all the way to the line.
It was 2020 that arguably provided the race with its biggest story as Hollie Doyle became the first female jockey to win a race at QIPCO British Champions Day, aboard Trueshan That would prove to be the start of a memorable day for Doyle and also provided dual-purpose trainer, Alan King with his first QIPCO British Champions Series winner Trueshan made it back-to-back wins in the race after a storming victory in 2021, beating Tashkhan and Stradivarius in the process.

ONES TO WATCH TRUESHAN
Sex: Gelding Colour: Bay Age: 6
Trainer: Alan King
Owner: Singula Partnership
Sire-Dam: Planteur (IRE) Shao Line (FR)
Breeder: Didier Blot
Info: Trueshan seeks to make history today by becoming the first horse to win three times on Champions Day. A runaway winner of this race two years ago, he retained his crown in decisive fashion 12 months ago and seems unlikely to relinquish it without a fight. He looked better than ever when winning the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle in June, when conceding lumps of weight to his rivals, and has subsequently been placed in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup and Coral Doncaster Cup. His ten wins on turf have all been achieved on good ground or softer, so any give in the ground will aid his cause.
ELDAR ELDAROV
Sex: Colt Colour: Bay Age: 3
Trainer: Roger Varian
Sire-Dam: Dubawi (IRE) All At Sea
Breeder: Miss K Rausing
Owner: KHK Racing Ltd
Info: A three-year-old has yet to win the Long Distance Cup but perhaps Eldar Eldarov will put the record straight He was having only his third start when performing wonders to get up in the final stride of the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot in June and stayed on strongly to win the Cazoo St Leger at Doncaster on his latest start. His only defeat in five races came on his penultimate start when he dropped in trip and was a creditable fourth to Onesto in the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp in mid-July His jockey, David Egan, suggested last weekend that his recent work at home has been better than ever
WATERVILLE
Sex: Colt Colour: Bay Age: 3
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Owner: Mrs John Magnier/Michael Tabor/ Derrick Smith/Westerberg
Sire-Dam: Camelot Holy Moon (IRE)
Breeder: Razza Del Velino Srl
Info: Aidan O’Brien has scooped the majority of this year’s top staying races with Kyprios and in the imposing Waterville he has another emerging long-distance star The Camelot colt, a half-brother to the brilliant Sea Of Class, is stepping up in class but put up a tremendous display in the 30-runner Friends Of The Curragh Irish Cesarewitch last month, weaving through from the back of the field to get up in the final strides and win by a neck from main market rival Echoes In Rain
AIDAN O'BRIEN
ON WATERVILLE
It’s a big step up in class for Waterville, but this has been the plan for him after the Cesarewitch. He’s come out of the race well.

3rd: Trueshan 2/1
What a showdown! Gold cup winner Kyprios came head to head with last year’s winner, Trueshan and Stradivarius in this year’s Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup. In the final two furlongs it was a waiting game for Strad as he was boxed in behind Kyprios but as soon as the gap came on the inside showed an impressive turn of foot and drove to the front, partnered by Andrea Atzeni. However, Kyprios did not back down and ridden by Ryan Moore once more, the pair powered home to cement his credentials as the dominant stayer in training.

There was shock in the Doncaster Cup as Coltrane beat the odds on favourite Trueshan by a neck The Andrew Balding-trained gelding travelled in the middle of the pack throughout and ahead of Trueshan who was held at the back. Once turning for home, Jockey David Probert found a gap on the inside, taking Coltrane on that route to the finish line ahead of Trueshan and Lismore. In winning the race Andrew Balding emulated his father, Ian, who won this contest for Her Late Majesty The Queen with Magna Carta in 1970

The Flat Jockeys’ Championship is enot Champion p not an honorary gong, a bauble anbestowed gon at the season’s end, but a title thearned e seas earned through blood, sweat and tears. ghIt , tear It is testament to the tedetermination, stament determination, character and talent of William rBuick d t Buick that having finished runner-up in thatthe g fi runner p the last two gruelling campaigns, that twhe o ca was fully prepared to do it all sagain. y d l
The 34-year-old gave it his all in 2021, a year in which he could have been forgiven for focusing on quality over quantity in a campaign that yielded a host of big-race successes, including the Cazoo St Leger on Hurricane Lane and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes aboard Adayar
But Buick’s agent Tony Hind made it clear from an early stage this year that his appetite for honours, along with the rider’s, was as voracious as ever
“I have got this thing in my blood that I love making champions,” Hind said.
“I am going to go for it from start to finish with William. He has got a lot of good contacts, he is a brilliant jockey, and has got all the attributes to be champion.”
Those attributes now have affirmation, if any were needed, in the form of a first Flat Jockeys’ Championship for Buick. It’s hard to believe it will be his last.
It seems an age ago that Buick shared the 2008 apprentices’ title with David Probert when both were based with Andrew Balding at Kingsclere, a yard which has also helped launch the careers of last year’s champion Oisin Murphy and 2018 champion apprentice
Jason Watson and which houses one of this year’s leading apprentice jockeys in Harry Davies.
Balding’s father, Ian, was so taken with Buick’s ability that he struck a £10 bet at 500/1 that Buick would be champion, remarkably placed before the jockey had ridden in public
Towards the end of 2014, Godolphin signed up both Buick and his close friend James Doyle; their careers remain closely entwined, with Doyle gaining a first British Classic success in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas in April of this year aboard Coroebus, at the expense of Buick who had elected to ride stablemate Native Trail.
Buick and Native Trail gained some compensation in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas before the pair finished a close third behind Vadeni and Mishriff in the Coral-Eclipse, one of the races of the season
Buick was back on board Coroebus at Royal Ascot, guiding him to success in the St James’s Palace Stakes, one of five victories for the rider at the prestigious meeting.
Despite that fast start to the first six weeks of the campaign, this year’s title was no all-the-way success for Buick, who was headed by both Hollie Doyle and
Ben Curtis at points during the opening skirmishes
A gifted rider unfairly dogged by injury, Curtis’s season has again been interrupted by battles with a longstanding shoulder problem All racing fans will hope that he is able to put those issues behind him and return in 2023 to enjoy a smoother season
As for Doyle, her achievements require no further introduction This year saw further holes punched in the glass ceiling as she gained a first Classic success in the French Oaks on Nashwa, days after finishing third in the Epsom version on the same filly.
She finishes the campaign with her best-ever seasonal tally, battling it out for second place in the championship with husband Tom Marquand and Paul Mulrennan, whose impressive level stakes profit over the course of the campaign has ensured that his popularity with punters endures.
Another six successes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival saw Buick retain the meeting’s top jockey title and put the seal on a prolific period which saw him ride over 30 winners in both June and July and pull clear of his title race competitors.
The pace barely dropped in August, a month in which Buick brought up his fastest century, appropriately with a Newmarket double for Charlie Appleby in mid-month, prompting Appleby to say: “To get to 100 winners in the speed that he’s done it in is an achievement in itself and I am delighted to be a part of it
“It’s not just his achievements here in the UK, it’s what he does on the global stage as well, and it just shows the horsemanship and the talent that William has. But to be crowned Champion Jockey will be a great achievement, and myself and everyone at Godolphin are very pleased for him.”
As Appleby highlighted, Buick rides for a worldwide operation and some of this year’s biggest highlights have been on the international stage.
Buick won the French 2000 Guineas aboard Modern Games (and the following day was back at Redcar for six rides) who has been a star for stable and jockey this season, placing in the French Derby and Sussex Stakes before winning the Woodbine Mile to complete a Grade One double in Canada for the jockey
Just days later, Newmarket’s important Cambridgeshire meeting saw further success
Buick ended the first day with a treble which he supplemented 24 hours later with a double and then another treble on the Saturday, including a Group One when landing the Cheveley Park Stakes aboard Ralph Beckett’s Lezoo, highlighting his popularity with all trainers at the time of writing, Buick had ridden domestic winners for 36 different trainers in the calendar year at an impressive strike rate of 27%.
Buick wasn’t done there though and Sunday saw him in Germany, again in Group One-winning action, when he partnered Rebel’s Romance to beat German Derby winner Sammarco in the Preis von Europa
It is a relentless schedule, especially for a man with a young family, but dedication and a drive to succeed have carried Buick to the top and we can be certain that he will not rest on the laurels of being crowned Champion Jockey today.
THEQIPCOBRITISHCHAMPIONSSPRINTSTAKES
HISTORY OF THE RACE
The event was established in 1946, and was originally called the Diadem Stakes, named after Diadem, a winner of several of Ascot’s leading races.
The race was given its present name and returned to October in 2011 when it became part of the newly created QIPCO British Champions Day. In 2015, the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes was upgraded from Group 2 to Group 1 status and has since been won by some top-class sprinters.
This six-furlong (1,200m) contest provides the grand finale to the seven-race sprint category of the QIPCO British Champions Series There are three Series races run over five furlongs and four, including today’s contest, over six furlongs Trainer James Fanshawe has a good record in the race, having won the first renewal under its current guise with Deacon Blues and more recently, with the ever reliable The Tin Man in 2016.
In 2017, 2018, and 2019 there were high-priced winners with the most notable being Donjuan Triumphant, winning at 33/1 in 2019, making him the highest-priced winner at QIPCO British Champions Day so far. In 2020 Hollie Doyle rode Glen Shiel to victory and, in doing so, secured her maiden Group 1 win. The duo returned in 2021 to defend their title, but were denied by Godolphin’s Creative Force and William Buick.

ONES TO WATCH CREATIVE FORCE
Sex: Gelding Colour: Chestnut Age: 4
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Owner: Godolphin
Sire-Dam: Dubawi (IRE) Choose Me (IRE)
Breeder: Owenstown Bloodstock Ltd
Info: No horse has won the Sprint in successive years, although 2020 winner Glen Shiel came close to achieving the feat when runner-up last year. Creative Force was the horse who denied him the double and now seeks back-to-back triumphs himself. He was a convincing winner 12 months ago, having won four other races earlier in the campaign, including in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. We’ve not see so much of Creative Force this season but he’s shown all his powers remain intact, being beaten a neck by Naval Crown, his stablemate, in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes here in June before finishing fourth in the Darley July Cup (a place better than he managed in 2021).
ART POWER
Sex: Horse Colour: Grey Age: 5

Info: Art Power has run in six QIPCO British Champions Series races over 6f in the past couple of years and finished 443454; never being beaten far on any occasion His connections must be growing a little concerned that their grey might never hit the jackpot but an emphatic win on his latest start in the Group 3 William Hill Ireland Renaissance Stakes at The Curragh means he will arrive at the top of the game. Art Power’s record at Ascot stands close inspection He’s been a fine fourth in the past two renewals of this race last year when drawn away from the trio who beat him plus has twice run well at Royal Ascot, winning at the meeting in 2020 and finishing third in last year’s Diamond Jubilee Stakes
ROHAAN
Sex: Gelding Colour: Bay Age: 4

Info: Rohaan was disappointing in the Sprint last year but perhaps a fruitful year, during which he won seven of his 17 races, had caught up with him. His prowess at Ascot is certainly not in doubt as he has won the past two renewals of the Wokingham, beating an aggregate of 45 rivals from high in the weights. And a fortnight ago he returned to land the Group 3 John Guest Racing Bengough Stakes.Rohaan made the frame in two Group 1 races in the second half of the summer the Arc Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville (behind Highfield Princess) and Betfair Sprint Cup (behind Minzaal) at Haydock

Once again it was another Charlie Appleby 1-2, with the 33-1 shot coming home in front of last year’s QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes winner, Creative Force. Jockey, Jim Crowley sat comfortably behind the leaders throughout but when asked one furlong out, the colt showed a remarkable turn of foot Minzaal stormed home to win impressively, making it a sixth win of the Series for Jim Crowley and Team Shadwell, from last year’s winner Emaraaty Ana in second.

CHAMPION APPRENTICE 2 0 2 2
The 2022 Apprentice Jockeys’ Championship has been a relentless rollercoaster of a ride.
Given the precocity and obvious talent of Benoit De La Sayette and Harry Davies, the racing world hoped the title battle between them might deliver. They were not to be disappointed.
Such has been the close-knit rivalry of the pair that only in the very final days has the championship been decided with just a handful of winners separating title-winner from runner-up. Perhaps it was runaway winner Obelix at Newcastle that clinched it, or easy winner Fully Wet at Chelmsford. October has seen Benoit De La Sayette, 19, edge into an unassailable lead and today, he will be crowned Champion Apprentice.
The first few weeks saw the chance for Davies to get first run on his would-be rival, as De La Sayette had only just returned from a six-month suspension Davies, 17, struck first, scoring on sprinter Son Of Sannie just three days into the season. Both he and Saffie Osborne raced into an early lead, their confidence up and the thrill of a new campaign spurring them on
It didn’t take long for De La Sayette to throw his hat in the ring, though taking the ride on Vafortino in one of the biggest handicaps of the season, the Victoria Cup, he steered the four-year-old gelding home for a cosy victory.
Once again, just as he had demonstrated when winning the Lincoln a season earlier, De La Sayette proved himself a man for the big occasion However, you can’t keep a talented rider down for long and Davies soon responded. Donning the blue silks of Godolphin, he bounced straight back with victory aboard After The Rain in the very next race.
Perhaps this was an early auspice of what was to come. Just when De La Sayette might have thought he’d stolen a march on his rival, Davies hit back. It would be tit for tat throughout the summer Indeed, just a week after the Victoria Cup, Davies landed a big Saturday handicap at Newmarket aboard Shine So Bright Despite a slow start, Davies refused to panic and weaved his mount through rivals to land the prize, demonstrating composure and cool in the heat of the moment.
And another seven days later, Davies continued his surge, landing a double at York on Bronte Cup Day with Truly Aclaimed and Maywake. Time for his rival to panic?
Of course not. Forty-eight hours after Davies’ double, De La Sayette caressed Salvator Mundi home at Leicester for bosses John and Thady Gosden
By the end of June, the standings saw Davies on 20 winners, with Benoit De La Sayette on 19. Neither had given an inch thus far, and July would see more of the same On the opening weekend, it was De La Sayette’s turn to ride a double, with Leicester once again a happy hunting ground as Divine Magic and Dukedom both did the business
Damaar helped him stretch the lead yet further at Chelmsford the following day, and it was at this point that De La Sayette really laid a marker down for the first time Another winner at Brighton twenty-four hours later, and he was on a roll. The following Saturday he scored again, this time at Newmarket. Three winners during Qatar Glorious Festival week followed, including a success aboard Trawlerman, who went on to triumph in the Ebor. But the best thrive under pressure, and Davies was keeping himself in the mix. A treble at Chelmsford at the beginning of August gave him a big boost, and suddenly it was game on again.
Another Saturday winner at Newmarket two weeks later, and once again there wasn’t much in it at all. Come mid-September and the scores were Davies 48, De La Sayette 47 Too close to call
Since then however, De La Sayette has had a month to remember. Over a dozen winners has seen his lead become a title. Racing should be grateful to both him and Davies as, apart from serving up an exciting battle, we now have two brilliant riding prospects to look forward to in the future
Not that any racing championship even this one can only have been about two protagonists
Saffie Osborne, Rhys Clutterbuck, Ryan Sexton, and Callum Hutchinson have all demonstrated that they have bright futures with notable successes against the biggest names, while Sean Kirrane, Stefano Cherchi, Pierre-Louis Jamin and Fred Larson have all also shown themselves to be hot prospects for the future
Competition at the top is becoming stronger and that healthy sporting rivalry is cascading down to the apprentice ranks. Recent winners of this title include Cieren Fallon, Oisin Murphy and Tom Marquand, and all have gone on to great things It would take a brave person to bet that Benoit De La Sayette is not destined for the same heights.
THE QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS FILLIES & MARES STAKES
HISTORY OF THE RACE
The history of the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes dates back to 1946 when Ascot staged the Princess Royal Stakes for the first time.
In 2008 it was renamed the Pride Stakes and moved to Newmarket, but it returned to Ascot under its current name in 2011 The new race was given a boost in its very first year as it was won by none other than the Investec Oaks and Preis der Diana (German Oaks) winner, Dancing Rain, a dual Classic heroine in her final European start.
It was subsequently upgraded to Group 1 status in 2013. Simple Verse was the second British Classic winner to claim the spoils in its short recent history when successful in 2015 Aidan O’Brien won back-to-back renewals with Hydrangea (2017) and Magical (2018). The latter went on to secure 2019’s QIPCO Champion Stakes. In 2019, the race was won by the John Gosden-trained Star Catcher with Frankie Dettori aboard. In 2020, Wonderful Tonight was a hugely impressive winner and was a first Group 1 win on British soil for her trainer, David Menuisier The Roger Varian-trained Eshaada was the 2021 winner of the race, who finished marginally ahead of Albaflora on the line.

ONES TO WATCH
MIMIKYU
Sex: Filly Colour: Bay Age: 3
Trainer: John and Thady Gosden
Owner: George Strawbridge
Sire-Dam: Dubawi (IRE) Montare (IRE)
Breeder: George Strawbridge
Info: Veteran owner-breeder George Strawbridge saw his white and green silks carried to victory by the John Gosden-trained Journey in this race in 2016 and must be hopeful of repeating the feat with her sister, Mimikyu, who has been blessed with similar powers and is also housed at Clarehaven
She was having only her sixth start when an emphatic winner of the Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes Doncaster last time when settling better than she has done sometimes in the past and scoring at the main expense of Eshaada A first-time hood seemed to help Mimikyu relax at Town Moor last time and perhaps it is no coincidence that the same headgear also helped Journey fulfil her potential.
ESHAADA
Sex: Filly Colour: Bay Age: 4
Trainer: Roger Varian
Owner: Shadwell Estate Company Ltd
Sire-Dam: Muhaarar Muhawalah (IRE)
Breeder: Shadwell Estate Company Limited
Info: Eshaada edged home by a short head from Albaflora in a thrilling renewal of the Fillies & Mares last year and is back to defend her crown. She had been runner-up in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot four months earlier and the demands of this course clearly serve her well, much as they did her sire, Muhaarar, who was all about speed and won the Commonwealth Cup and Champions Sprint at Ascot in 2015 Eshaada has been unable to add to her tally in three starts this term but has run well in defeat on her past two starts
ETERNAL PEARL
Sex: Filly Colour: Bay Age: 3
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Owner: Godolphin
Sire-Dam: Frankel Pearly Steph (FR)
Breeder: Scea Haras De Saint Pair
Info: The daughter of Frankel seems to be peaking at just the right time for Champions Day, and she arrives at Ascot seeking a fifth successive win. A 700,000gns purchase as a yearling, she was unraced as a two-year-old and beaten in her first three starts this campaign However, she’s improved with every run, winning Group 3 prizes at Deauville and Newmarket on her past two starts She was particularly impressive when staying on stoutly to collar Peripatetic in the Princess Royal Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Stakes on her latest start, a race that Journey won before landing this in 2016 A big, scopey filly, it would be no surprise if Eternal Pearl progressed again
ROGER VARIAN ON ESHAADA
Eshaada has been trained for one race all year and I’m very happy with her It doesn’t concern me at all that she hasn’t won yet this year as she needed the race first time out, nearly got brought down at Haydock, and then was second to a very good filly at Doncaster.
THE FILLIES & MARES SERIES
THE QIPCO 1000 GUINEAS
NEWMARKET ROWLEY MILE, 1ST MAY
(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M) £490,000 PRIZE MONEY
1st: CACHET (IRE) 16/1
2nd: Prosperous Voyage (IRE) 33/1
3rd: Tuesday (IRE) 4/1
Cachet made it a weekend to remember for James Doyle who was winning his second Classic in the space of 24 hours. It was another first for young trainer George Boughey who won one of racing’s most coveted prizes in just his third year of training. It was an impressive performance from the filly as she led the field from the stalls and all the way to the line, ahead of Prosperous Voyage who challenged hard in the final furlong and just missed out on the spoils
THE CAZOO OAKS
EPSOM DOWNS, 3RD JUNE
(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 4F) £540,000 PRIZE MONEY
1st: TUESDAY (IRE) 13/2
2nd: Emily Upjohn 6 /4F
3rd: Nashwa 4/1
What a Race! Tuesday triumphed for team Ballydoyle in this year’s Cazoo Oaks beating the favourite Emily Upjohn by a head. In doing so she gave maestro Aidan O’Brien a history-breaking 41st British Classic winner The result may have been different had Frankie Dettori and Emily Upjohn not stumbled when leaving the stalls, conceding huge amounts of ground, but Tuesday withstood the challenge of her fast-finishing rival to claim the crown.
THE CORONATION STAKES
ROYAL ASCOT, 17TH JUNE
(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M) £440,000 PRIZE MONEY
1st: INSPIRAL 15/8F
2nd: Spendarella (USA) 9/1
3rd: Discoveries (IRE) 11/1
After a slight setback meant she swerved the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, Inspiral made her debut in the Coronation Stakes and what a debut it was! Trained by John and Thady Gosden the filly turned around the Clarehaven team’s Royal Ascot week by going into turbo mode down the straight and mowing past the field to win by an inspiring four and three-quarter lengths
THE TATTERSALLS FALMOUTH STAKES
NEWMARKET JULY COURSE, 8TH JULY
(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M) £200,000 PRIZE MONEY
1st: PROSPEROUS VOYAGE (IRE) 16/1
2nd: Inspiral 1/7F
3rd: Sandrine 12/1
A shock result in this year’s Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes with 16-1 outsider Prosperous Voyage beating the odds-on favourite and Royal Ascot winning Inspiral This win was the first of the Series for jockey, Rob Hornby who would have been itching to get a Group 1 under his belt after losing the ride of Westover in the Irish Derby. The pace was set steady from the start but on the day Inspiral was no match for Prosperous Voyage who found a second wind the further she went
THE QATAR NASSAU STAKES
GOODWOOD, 28TH JULY
(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 2F) £590,000 PRIZE MONEY
1st: NASHWA 6/5F
2nd: Aristia (IRE) 40/1
3rd: Lilac Road (IRE) 15/2
Hollie Doyle made history in becoming the first female jockey to win the Qatar Nassau Stakes on board Nashwa Trainer John Gosden spoke glowingly after the race, saying, “She’s a star, so applied and focused, and a credit to anyone in any line of work.” An impressive ride saw Nashwa show her class as she swooped past the field from last to first with 40-1 outsider Aristia in second.
THE DARLEY YORKSHIRE OAKS
YORK, 18TH AUGUST
(CLASS 1) (GROUP 1) (1M 4F) £350,000 PRIZE MONEY
1st: ALPINISTA (JPN) 7/4F
2nd: Tuesday (IRE) 7/2
3rd: La Petite Coco (IRE) 4/1
After Group 1 international success could Alpinista make it a fifth Group 1 on home soil? Going into the race, her trainer Sir Mark Prescott had no doubt she was the best filly in the race, and after her performance at York and subsequent heroics at Longchamp we now know why. Alpinista, ridden by Luke Morris, held a steady pace throughout the race and was always in the slipstream of strong competition on La Petite Coco and Magical Lagoon In the closing stretch the filly showed enough to win by a length in front of the Cazoo Oaks winner, Tuesday

ChampionsSeries
British Champions Series
Queen Elizabeth II was racing’s greatest supporter for more than 70 years and it was our honour to induct her into the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame last year
What other sport has had such a constant companion and ally since the mid-1940s? Queen Elizabeth II’s lifetime love of horses never diminished with her devotion as an owner, breeder, ambassador and fan unwavering She is a treasured figurehead and has been part of racing’s fabric for as long as anyone can remember
The magic and excitement that The Queen created when attending the races was immeasurable, as anyone who has crowded around the paddock to greet her daily arrival at Royal Ascot over the past seven decades will testify
The Queen nominated Aureole as being among her favourite five racehorses in Horse & Hound magazine in 2020. The other quartet were Doutelle, the first top-class horse bred by The Queen in her own right; Phantom Gold, who won the Ribblesdale Stakes in 1995 before becoming central to Her Majesty’s broodmare band, Estimate who won the Gold Cup at Ascot in 2013 and Highclere, winner of the 1974 1000 Guineas
The Queen’s induction into the Hall of Fame, the first within the Special Contributor category, was testament to her unwavering commitment and longstanding patronage of the sport, and the benefits that this devotion had undoubtedly brought to British horseracing
On the 8th September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II sadly passed away, but her mark on horse racing will be left for decades to come Her eldest son and now monarch, King Charles III has now taken on the reins as a racehorse owner, enjoying his first success at Leicester Racecourse on 5th October
Visit the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame exhibition, where a special display pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, together with other Hall of Famers. The exhibition is located in the centre of the Grandstand.
The QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame inducts individuals, both equine and human, from 1970 to the present day, with the Class of 2022 including champions from across the timeline
Guineas Inductions
In April the Hall of Fame inducted two more titans of the turf, with Frankie Dettori and Dancing Brave becoming the tenth and eleventh Hall of Famers. Both titans were recognised at the QIPCO Guineas Festival and presented with their coveted Hall of Fame medals.
Frankie Dettori has been thrilling racing fans for 35 years and is a sporting colossus recognised by a global audience, and his story still has more chapters. Dettori has ridden almost 3,300 British winners and has also enjoyed vast success all around the world, winning major races in no fewer than 24 countries His six victories in France’s most coveted race, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, is a record.
The Class of 2022 also wound back the clock to the early 1980s, with Dancing Brave becoming the sixth horse to be inducted into the Hall of Fame His versatility and turn of foot, not to mention constitution, made him stand out from the crowd
The Great Galileo
The seventh horse inducted into the Hall of Fame was the late great Galileo, who was recognised at the Cazoo Derby Festival following a public vote. Galileo was a dazzling Derby winner in 2001, and his progeny has continued to shine in the Classic race The great stallion now joins his most successful progeny, the incomparable and all-conquering Frankel, in the Hall of Fame.
Today’s Inductions
It was ten years ago this week that the magnificent colt Frankel, signed off his flawless career with victory in the QIPCO Champion Stakes on this very raceday. Today we’re celebrating his trainer, Sir Henry Cecil, one of the most successful and much-loved trainers of the past century. Speaking of his most celebrated masterpiece, Frankel, Cecil acclaimed;
“He’s the best I’ve ever had, the best I’ve ever seen.” Cecil is joined in the Hall of Fame by one of racing’s colourful characters, Willie Carson OBE. Carson was a 5ft powerhouse of the Weighing Room and today, we recognise his glittering career by announcing his induction into the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame
The Scot, who will be 80 next month, was champion jockey in Britain five times and his 3,828 winners in the UK have included 17 Classic triumphs, four of them in The Derby Only three other greats have bettered his overall tally: Sir Gordon Richards (4870), Pat Eddery (4633) and Lester Piggott (4493)
Britain’s richest race day has played host to many true champions over the course of the last decade, but none greater than the horse who starred at the inaugural meeting.
Ten years ago on this exact raceday, the legend Frankel arrived at Ascot with a perfect record of 13 wins in 13 straight races, nine of them Group 1s He produced another imperious performance to land the QIPCO Champion Stakes on an emotional day at the Berkshire track.
The ground was more testing that he had faced, and the colt’s participation had been in doubt until Lord Grimthorpe (then Juddmonte Racing Manager) walked the course before giving the go ahead A sell-out crowd of 32,000 cheered home Frankel who finished ahead of the previous year’s victor Cirrus des Aigles
The mastermind behind Frankel’s training, Sir Henry Cecil, paid tribute to the horse after the race by saying: “He’s the best I’ve ever had, the best I’ve ever seen I’d be very surprised if there’s ever been a better.”
Today, it is our honour to induct the great late Sir Henry Cecil into the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame, where he is also joined by legendary jockey Willie Carson OBE.

HISTORY OF THE RACE
Long recognised as Europe’s flagship mile race, 1,600m contests come no bigger than this anywhere on the international stage. Since becoming part of QIPCO British Champions Day the race has gone from strength to strength and has seen some mighty performances across the previous nine runnings.
Named in honour of The Queen in 1955, the race has a roll of honour packed full of stars, including Brigadier Gerard (1971 & 1972), Known Fact (1980), Dubai Millennium(1999) and the awesome Frankel, who took the contest in 2011 in effortless fashion
In 2016, Minding became the first filly to be successful since Milligram in 1987, a feat which was followed up by Persuasive for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori in 2017 The race already held special memories for Frankie Dettori, having provided him with his first-ever Group 1 victory thanks to Markofdistinction in 1990.
Six years later, Mark Of Esteem was the third leg of his ‘Magnificent Seven’, when he won all seven races on that famous Ascot card 2021 saw a fantastic battle with Dettori and Palace Pier denied a final career win on the day by undefeated three-year-old, Baaeed. This gave owners Shadwell and jockey Jim Crowley a second of three wins on the day

There was shock in this year's Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes with the outsider, Fonteyn, storming home to just catch John & Thady Gosden’s Laurel on the line. Last year's winner, Saffron Beach who was the favourite, ran disappointingly and was no match for Fonteyn who was steered to victory by Neil Callan who scored his first Series win after a decade racing in Hong Kong. The pair jumped out of the stalls well, taking a keen lead and keeping a good position on the stands rail In the final furlong Fonteyn battled against supplemented Laurel, both finishing strongly but it was the Kevin Ryan trained horse that came out on top.

CHAMPION O W N E R TITLE RACE 2 0 2 2
“For Godolphin to be Champion Owner, me Champion Trainer and William (Buick) being two strides off being Champion Jockey… that shows the strength and depth of the operation and long may that continue,” said Charlie Appleby at the end of 2021. The hardest point now is to try to maintain this level in 2022, but we have an exciting team with some very smart soon-to-be three-year-olds.” Appleby’s faith was not to prove misplaced. Those three-year-olds had collected three Classics between them before the dust had settled on the new British season.
So, although the destination of this year’s trainers’ title will take a little more unravelling, Godolphin and Buick will today be crowned Champion Owner and Champion Jockey following a season which began in scintillating fashion on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile at the end of April (a month which had already seen Godolphin named UK Champion Owner on the all-weather for an eighth consecutive time).
Native Trail was unbeaten in his juvenile career and went into the winter as favourite for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas following his victory in the Dewhurst. Also successful on the same 2021 Dubai Future Champions Festival card was Coroebus, a convincing winner of the Group Three Emirates Autumn Stakes.
Buick and the betting market preferred Native Trail to Coroebus, but the latter produced a brilliant display to beat his stablemate by three quarters of a length and spark dreams of what lay ahead.
Those dreams didn’t pan out as we all would have hoped with Coroebus suffering an untimely and fatal injury in the Prix du Moulin, having already added the St James’s Palace Stakes to his tally, ending his career with four victories from seven starts.
Native Trail picked up a Classic victory of his own in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas before being asked to stretch his stamina to 10 furlongs in the Eclipse, finishing a half-length third, and the International at York
Godolphin had taken centre stage in the 2021 Cazoo Derby but this year’s Epsom festivities proved to be somewhat lower key, with last season’s Classic hero, Adayar, ruled out of his intended return due to a minor setback.
But the day after Epsom, French 2000 Guineas winner Modern Games showcased Godolphin’s strength in depth with a fighting third in the French Derby. He went on to book his return to the Breeders’ Cup when winning the Grade One Woodbine Mile in Canada on a remarkable night which saw Godolphin gain further Grade One honours on the card with Mysterious Night and Nations Pride at Aqueduct in America.
Back in Britain, Godolphin enjoyed a fine June, saddling 32 winners with a strike rate of 25%, and winning the Leading Owner Award at Royal Ascot for a second successive year with five victories over as many days There was more top-level success too, courtesy both of Coroebus, and Naval Crown, who edged out stablemate Creative Force in a thrilling Platinum Jubilee Stakes
The pair finished first and second at the same meeting in the Group Three Jersey Stakes 12 months earlier and repeated the feat against some of the leading sprinters in the world, with Naval Crown emerging best by a neck to become the 50th individual Group One winner for his sire, Dubawi. Noble Truth ensured that the Jersey Stakes remained with Godolphin and that success was further supplemented by Dubai Future (Wolferton) and Secret State (King George V Handicap).
Mawj, trained by Appleby’s Godolphin colleague Saeed bin Suroor, finished second in the Albany Stakes but she went one better at Newmarket’s July Festival in the Group Two Duchess of Cambridge Stakes and returned to Newmarket in September to finish third in the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes.
She was joined in the July Course winner’s enclosure by the globe-trotting Yibir and New London, who gave a sign of things to come when storming home to win a heritage handicap
New London successfully stepped up in grade for the Group Three John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes, putting himself in the frame for the Cazoo St Leger Secret State also threw his hat into the ring for the final Classic of the season as the pair helped Godolphin end the Qatar Goodwood Festival as Champion Owner with six winners.
Godolphin ended July with another impressive haul of 30 winners at a 28% strike-rate and continued to send out winners at a similar rate throughout August and September with notable highlights provided by Noble Style’s victory in the Gimcrack Stakes and by fellow juvenile Naval Power showcasing his talents in the Ascendant Stakes
There are still races to be run today and new champions to be crowned, but the race for the Owners’ Championship was over bar the shouting, some time ago. There will, though, be no easing up from Sheikh Mohammed’s global operation with representatives at the key international fixtures to look forward to and a wealth of juvenile talent with Classic aspirations to nurture through the winter months.
At the very top of the sport, racing’s wheel never stops turning.
THE QIPCO CHAMPION STAKES
HISTORY OF THE RACE
Following on from iconic races like the Cazoo Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, the QIPCO Champion Stakes provides a pulsating showdown in the QIPCO British Champions Series Middle Distance division.
The race brought its great heritage with it from Newmarket, where it had been run from its inception in 1877 until 2010 But it’s move to QIPCO British Champions Day in 2011 has seen some remarkable performances and has further enhanced its status Each of the eleven renewals in the race’s new surroundings have produced top quality fields and thrilling finishes
The first set the bar high, with French raider Cirrus Des Aigles getting the better of Aussie superstar So You Think, with two champion mares, Snow Fairy and Midday, further behind. For quality and drama, few races could ever match the 2012 running, when Frankel rounded off his unbeaten career with another magnificent win, his 14th in a row. In 2016, Almanzor completed a stunning sequence of five victories with a dramatic defeat of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe winner, Found, to provide French trainer Jean-Claude Rouget with his first and Belgian jockey Christophe Soumillon with his second win in the race.
Cracksman, son of Frankel, won back-to-back renewals in 2017 and 2018 by a combined distance of 13 lengths, and in doing so became the first horse to win the same race twice at QIPCO British Champions Day. In 2019 the tough mare Magical showed her class and in 2020, it was Addeybb that would go one better and secure jockey, Tom Marquand his first success at QIPCO British Champions Day. In 2021, France took home the trophy with their representative, Sealiway, ridden by classic winning jockey Mickael Barzalona

JIM CROWLEY ON BAAEED
I’ve been fortunate to ride some good horses, but Baaeed does give that feeling of something completely different to any I’ve come across before not only on the racecourse, but in his whole demeanour. He’s such a great character. I may never come across a horse like him again.

A star-studded line-up graced the stage for this year’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO stakes including an Irish Derby, Saudi Cup and previous Arc winner Against the odds, it was Pyledriver who prevailed, running out an astounding two and three-quarter lengths winner from Torquator Tasso who himself was eight lengths clear of Mishriff Pyledriver travelled well throughout with the favorite Westover setting a strong pace Jockey PJ McDonald sent on Pyledriver three furlongs out and there was no catching them Who would have thought the horse picked up for 10,000 guineas would have a career like this?

YORK, 17TH AUGUST

1st: BAAEED 2/5F
2nd: Mishriff (IRE) 4/1
3rd: Sir Busker (IRE) 100/1
Leading up to this year’s Juddmonte International all the talk was of how Baaeed would handle the step up in trip and whether he would be able to emulate the mighty Frankel who likewise made his 10 furlong debut in this race ten years ago. Silky smooth in running and still on the bridle until the last furlong, Baaeed silenced the doubters with a spectacular performance, showing a remarkable turn of foot to win by an impressive six-and-a-half lengths and cement his position as one of the greatest racehorses in the world

THE BALMORAL HANDICAP STAKES (SPONSORED BY QIPCO)
HISTORY OF THE RACE
Named after the castle in Scotland that has belonged to the British Royal Family since it was purchased by Prince Albert in 1852, the Balmoral Handicap (sponsored by QIPCO) was inaugurated in 2014.
A race known as the Balmoral Handicap had previously been staged over five furlongs at the Royal Meeting but was discontinued in 2004 in favour of the new Windsor Forest Stakes for fillies and mares. The Ascot Executive always intended to bring the name back when the appropriate opportunity arose, and Her Majesty The Queen graciously consented to it being re-introduced on QIPCO British Champions Day. The Balmoral Handicap, with its £200,000 race value, has quickly become established as one of the most prestigious events of its kind anywhere in Europe. In its inaugural running, the race could not have had a more popular winner than Marcus Tregoning’s Bronze Angel, twice the winner of the Cambridgeshire.
In 2017, Lord Glitters secured victory for David O’Meara and subsequently went on to secure his first Group 1 at Royal Ascot in 2019 in the Queen Anne Stakes In 2020, trainer Jessica Harrington would secure her first QIPCO British Champions Day winner with Njord, who gave his jockey Tom Marquand back-to-back wins on the card. Jim Crowley made it a QIPCO British Champions Day to remember by completing a treble when winning with Aldaary in last year’s renewal. It also marked a third win on the day for owners Shadwell.

ONES TO WATCH BLUE FOR YOU
Sex: Gelding Colour: Chesnut Age: 4
Trainer: David O’Meara
Owner: Alderson Burke Francis
Sire-Dam: New Approach (IRE) Love In The Sun (IRE)
Breeder: Moyglare Stud Farm
Info: Winner of two of his seven races in Ireland last year, when trained by Dermot Weld, Blue For You has continued to progress in the care of David O’Meara this season after changing hands for 65,000gns After four successive near-misses at Sandown Park, York (twice) and Goodwood, the handicapper must have thought he was in control but Blue For You deservedly got his head in front at York’s Ebor meeting in August beating stablemate Escobar by a head with 16 others behind. On his latest start, here at Ascot a fortnight ago, Blue For You finished behind Escobar but he wasn’t seen to best advantage after a six-week break.
MONTASSIB
Sex: Gelding Colour: Chestnut Age: 4
Trainer: William Haggas
Owner: Somerville Lodge Limited
Sire-Dam: Exceed And Exceli (AUS) Felwah
Breeder: Shadwell Estate Company Limited
Info: Montassib has been knocking at the door so loudly in competitive handicaps in the second half of this season that he probably has bruised knuckles Having returned from a lengthy lay-off with successive wins at Wetherby and Goodwood, he was then a close fifth in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot before fourth-place finishes in the bet365 Bunbury Cup, at Newmarket, and Dubai Duty Free Shergar Mile, here at Ascot. On his latest start, he found one too good at Haydock Park, again hinting his turn was close
MIGRATION
Sex: Gelding Colour: Bay Age: 6
Trainer: David Menuisier
Owner: Gail Brown Racing (IX)
Sire-Dam: Alhebayeb (IRE) Caribbean Ace (IRE)
Breeder: Ms C Peddie
Info: Migration has been absent since being beaten a neck by Modern News in a competitive 17-runner handicap at Newbury in April but he can go well when fresh, so don’t let that put you off him. Last season, having returned from 20 months on the sidelines, he was an unlucky loser on his return at Salisbury before winning at Glorious Goodwood and then scoring at York’s Dante meeting. His trainer attributed his below-par final run of the campaign to fast ground and his overall record does point to good going or softer serving him well His Newbury conqueror won a Listed race next time and went close in Group 3 company on his latest start.
ESCOBAR
Sex: Gelding Colour: Bay Age: 8
Trainer: David O’Meara
Owner: Withernsea Thoroughbred Limited
Sire-Dam: Famous Name Saying Grace (IRE)
Breeder: Peter Evans
Info: Escobar will be running on QIPCO British Champions Day for the fifth successive year and few will take him lightly after his commanding win in a valuable handicap at Ascot a fortnight ago. That success confirmed he seems to have a soft spot for Ascot, which is also reflected by his record in this race Second in the 2018 renewal, he went one better 12 months later, when winning at the main expense of subsequent Group 1 winner Lord North, and he was a creditable sixth last year. He is well-served by the demands of big-field handicaps and the dartboard colours of his owners make him easy to identify.

HORSE WELFARE
At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses.
During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
