Welcome to the Betfair Ascot Chase Raceday.
Our feature race today is the Betfair Ascot Chase, the final Grade 1 in the calendar before the Cheltenham Festival.
Dating back to 1995 it has been won by the likes of One Man, Monet’s Garden, Kauto Star, Silviniaco Conti and Cue Card over the years.
It looks set to be an excellent renewal today with last year’s winner Fakir D’Oudairies attempting to be the first back-to-back winner since Riverside Theatre in 2011 and 2012. He will face dual Cheltenham Festival winner Shishkin who is stepping up in trip as well as Pic D’Orhy who bids to give Paul Nicholls a record-breaking fifth win in the contest.
The race is sponsored by Betfair for the 15th consecutive year and we are hugely grateful for their continued support and delighted to be providing record prize money of £175,000. Our thanks also go to Bateaux London, LK Bennett and the European Breeders’ Fund for their sponsorship on the day.
Off the track, we are thrilled to finally be able to welcome the winners of the Ascot Racecourse Supports Schools Poetry Competition who will be presented their prizes before racing. The competition took place before Christmas but having lost our last two meetings due to frost this will be the first opportunity we have had to celebrate their success
Our final Jumps meeting of the season is the Spring Family Raceday on Sunday 2nd April where there will be a wide range of additional activities for all ages to enjoy.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman30-73

Competition Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race)
Our opener is a novice race. These tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular contest is a novices’ hurdle for horses aged five and upwards, run over two miles and about three furlongs

The Bateaux London Reynoldstown
Novices’ Steeple Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
Our first of two graded races, the Grade 2 Reynoldstown race is a high-class contest and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch horses lining up, and possibly some Cheltenham Festival contenders Initially the weights in this three mile steeple chase for novices aged five and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 3lb for winners of a Class 2 weightfor-age or Class 1 handicap chase, to 5lb for victory in a Class 1 weight-for-age chase.

3rd Race 2.25pm
The LK Bennett Swinley Handicap Steeple Chase (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race)
Premier handicaps are the best handicaps on offer and can only be bettered by graded contests Many of the five-year-olds and upwards in this three mile chase race will be using this race as a springboard to possibly even better things Even though it’s called a premium handicap, it’s still a handicap meaning that the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official rating. There is no handicap limit in this race, so Neon Moon will be carrying bottom weight whereas Sporting John will be carrying top weight.

The Ascot Racecourse Supports
Box4Kids Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race)
This handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards is run over two miles and about three furlongs In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

The Betfair
Ascot Steeple Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race)
The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and five furlongs Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football - quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race so the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex.

The Age Concern Bracknell
Handicap Hurdle
Our penultimate race is a handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards rated from 0-125 and is run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms, a horse rated 125 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 120

7th Race 4.45pm
The British European Breeders’ Fund EBF Mares’ Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race)
Our finale is a National Hunt Flat Race - or ‘bumper’, as they are more commonly referred to - is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat, over hurdles or in steeple chases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to fillies and mares aged four, five and six, which are E.B.F eligible, and will be run over two miles

ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS
Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING
The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today.
The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate.
Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
ROYAL ASCOT
The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768 The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939
The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 and 2022 having won the race three times between 2018 and 2020.

MANAGING ASCOT
Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown Estate property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure.
The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as His Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. His Majesty The King is the thirteenth monarch that Ascot has operated under having succeeded Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Late Majesty took a keen interest in the races and had great success with her own horses over the years, including most famously winning the Gold Cup with Estimate in 2013. The jockeys riding the Sovereign’s horses can be identified by the royal racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent.
During Royal Ascot, the monarch traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Platinum Jubilee Stakes New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep.
Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20th June 2006.
HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006
There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days
when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when Queen Elizabeth II won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season.
The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot.
2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, with the
Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar Renamed again in 2022 as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes, the race became one of two contests at Royal Ascot worth £1 million in prize money and victory went to Godolphin’s Naval Crown. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting, including Campanelle who was successful twice in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the world’s best sprinter, Nature Strip, travelled over from Australia and produced a brilliant performance to win the King’s Stand Stakes
It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling eight-race contest.
While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize.

22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
23. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

FA N TA ST I C P R I Z E S
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants
Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses This created a safer surface for the horses, as previously, some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
For Jump racing, we introduced the one-fit padded hurdles for the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. Vets generally find fewer superficial
injuries with horses running over padded hurdles compared to the traditional birch hurdle.
At the start of the 2022/23 season,we switched from orange to white markings on our wood and vinyl padding of take-off boards, guard rails and top boards. Research from Exeter University showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

KATHLEEN (KATHY) MCMULLAN Raceday Steward
We sadly heard the news that one of our long-standing Raceday Stewards, Kathy McMullan, passed away suddenly in November 2022.
Kathy worked as a Raceday Steward (Bowler Hat) on Level 2 of the Grandstand guiding our guests to the Ascot Authority Box and at times assisting on the door to the Royal Box. She had been with us since November 2013 and was joined on racedays by her husband, Charles McMullan, who works as a Senior Sector Supervisor leading the raceday racing team.
Kathy was an inspirational and valued member of staff and will be sorely missed by all of her colleagues and friends here at Ascot. We send our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Charles and his family during this difficult time.

RESOUNDING AFFIRMATION OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT’S POSITIVE VALUE TO RACING’S FUTURE
Over 120 guests and speakers from across the country and the sport of horseracing converged on Ascot Racecourse on Thursday 9 February for the inaugural Racing Together Industry Day. The event –supported by The Levy Board, the Racing Foundation, Racecourse Association and Ascot Racecourse – was designed to explore ‘why community engagement is at the heart of racing’s future strategy’ and drew upon some of its own diverse leaders in the field, supported by invaluable insight from football, cricket and the responsible gambling sector
Around 60 separate organisations, including 20 charities were represented at one of British sport’s most iconic venues
Representing football and the Premier League, Andy McLaren shared the experiences of the football family, which is supported by a vast charity network comprising over 6,000 staff across the Leagues. Together they support highly effective programmes, such as Premier League Kicks, which a young Marcus Rashford benefited from in his school days “There is a high-performance sustainable bedrock to our work through assessing the charities in the same way, ” said Andy.
British Horseracing Authority Chair, Joe Saumarez Smith set out the vision of the sport’s governing body to lay the foundation to help the industry achieve greater things On the value of community engagement, he said: “We all have an opportunity to share our stories and to work harder to inform wider recognition from Government and MPs.”
If Ascot symbolises high quality racing for the wider world, then Lord’s Cricket ground holds that same stature for its sport. Ricky Reynolds, Head of Community at Lord’s Cricket said “Half of our programmes have nothing to do with a bat and ball but are more about access to our spaces, such as the media centre and museum, where
young people are engaged with maths and literacy. Local people are supported through employability programmes and a mental health partnership with the charity, MIND has allowed our team to do what we do best, to play an active role at an ultra-local level.”
York Racecourse’s successful Pride Raceday was showcased in a presentation from Harriet Rochester representing the racecourse, supported by Rachael Gowland from the EBF and Di Farrell-Thomas from Racing with Pride.
EPIC Risk Management’s Mark Potter highlighted just some of racing’s opportunities to support and educate its workforce and customers around responsible gambling. The delegates were very moved as Mark shared his own lived experience of gambling harm, which spiralled to devastating effect during his days as a professional rugby player.
The day concluded with a rousing call to action from a panel comprising trainers Richard Phillips and Jo Foster, Park Lane Stables’ Founder Natalie O’Rourke MBE and aspiring jockey Louis Woolf, discussing the growth and future potential of National Racehorse Week, alongside Great British Racing’s Gabi Whitfield.
John Blake, CEO of Racing Together said:
“We were so grateful to have been joined by such a knowledgeable and action-focused group of speakers and colleagues from across racing and other sports. It was encouraging to see representatives from our main funder, The Levy Board, so too the Racing Foundation, Ascot Racecourse Supports…, and the Racecourse Association engaging in the discussions as invested partners
“So many of the delegates are themselves committing time and resources to work on improving the lives of racing’s communities, making the sport more relevant and valuable to an often circumspect, or even dismissive society.
Representing the hosts, Racing to School Trustee Jacqui Greet closed the morning session alongside Jon Yates, Berkshire Community Foundation and Assunta Soldovieri, Sebastian’s Action Trust reflecting on some effective activity within the ‘Ascot Supports…’ community programme – a new sub-brand that the racecourse has embedded so successfully within its work since 2017
“There was great optimism and urgency around the room and a clear answer to the question of whether community engagement should be at the heart of racing’s future thinking and planning.”

WELCOMING Box4Kids
The Barrie Wells Trust is a charity founded and funded by Barrie Wells MBE which run the Box4Kids initiative The charity is unique in that it does not ask for any monetary donations, just simply the kind donation of executive boxes.
The Trust collaborates with over 200 sports clubs, entertainment venues and box holders who kindly donate their boxes. To date, over 14,000 children and their families have enjoyed a Box4Kids experience. The Trust have a network of over 140 hospitals across the UK including Great Ormond Street, Royal Manchester Children’s, Great North Children’s and Alder Hey who nominate children to attend.
Box4Kids invites seriously ill and disabled children to enjoy a sporting or entertainment event in the luxury of an executive box. Comfortable and safe, a box is an ideal environment for a child who normally is not able to attend sporting or entertainment events due to their illness or disability. Most importantly, it’s the perfect way to make a child feel special for the day, giving them a VIP experience to remember.
Getting involved is easy. Whether you’re a business, a club, event venue or an individual, they invite you to donate your box and aim to make it as simple as possible. Just choose an event you’d like to donate your box for and Box4Kids do the rest. Their team does all of the logistics, inviting children from local hospitals for the day and hosting them with their families.
To celebrate the children that are here with us today, we have named our 3pm race “The Ascot Racecourse Supports Box4Kids Handicap Hurdle Race” and have asked the children to judge the best turned out horse.
If you are interested in donating your executive box, or would like to find out more about The Trust and Box4Kids, you can contact Barrie directly at barrie.wells@ barriewellstrust.org or via the office on 01524 590600

Age Concern Bracknell Forest is a 50-year-old charity dedicated to supporting older people; offering services to end loneliness and promote wellbeing. The charity provides a supportive day centre that is fully dementia-friendly and a safe and secure environment for older people. At the day centre they have a busy roster of entertainment filled to bursting with games, activities, crafts, quizzes, bingo, and even chair fitness. They have a new, unique relaxed cinema room while piping hot meals are served daily. The day centre is managed by an experienced care team and is proud to run community groups that help reduce and combat isolation in the heart of neighbourhoods In 2022, they integrated another beloved local organisation, Triple A, into their Age Concern Bracknell Forest family. Triple A is designed to re-connect older people to their community and offers exciting outings as well as respite for carers. They have launched the revised community provision and have already planned trips for the year ahead.
“We are thrilled to be supported by Ascot Racecourse who have helped us on multiple occasions over the past few years. Last summer, a dedicated team of employees from the racecourse gave up their time to help rejuvenate our main garden areas to allow our members to enjoy the outside space.
“Ascot Racecourse continues to champion charities in the local area and on behalf of the entire team here at Age Concern Bracknell Forest, we are beyond humbled by the generosity, kindness and giving of the team. Allowing us fundraising opportunities within this glorious setting means we can raise vital funds to help support our running costs and provide our vital services. Small charities receive no central funding, and the chance to raise funds and increase awareness is vital. This has been possible because of fantastic organisations like Ascot Racecourse.”
Andrew Eltham - CEO, Age Concern, Bracknell Forest.
In recognition of the charity’s work, we have named our 4.10pm race “The Age Concern Bracknell Handicap Hurdle Race” and Emma Franklin, Finance Officer for Age Concern Bracknell will present trophies to winning connections. The charity is also our bucket collection charity today so please donate to this worthy cause if you are able.
Their mission has remained unchanged - as a small, independent charity they want to support local older people suffering from loneliness and isolation. They want to engage them and signpost people to services that can support them. With the current cost of living crisis, older people are struggling with rising energy costs, food prices and continued isolation following the pandemic. They work tirelessly every day to create positive opportunities for older people, bringing the support they need at the time they need it most. The charity is also passionate about expanding its reach to span all generations, recognising that every community (regardless of age) needs to come together, support each other and benefit from being connected to one another.

GEORGE RIDGLEY
Raceday Steward
We sadly heard the news that one of our long-standing Bowler Hats, George Ridgley passed away.
George worked as a Raceday Steward (Bowler Hat) for over 30 years, from 1991 until he retired in early 2022. His first job was supporting the office team on racedays, where he undertook a wide range of duties, before moving over to help the racing team.
Primarily based in the Parade Ring, George was instrumental in making sure our trophies were delivered safely and placed in the correct position ready for presentations. He was a familiar face in the Winners’ Enclosure and quite often on TV as he ensured everything was exactly right. George also wrote a book ‘Life in a bowler hat’ which tells of his many encounters at Ascot Racecourse over the years and donated all proceeds to charity
He will be missed greatly by us all and our deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends during this difficult time.

28TH
An action-packed couple of days at Ascot with the perfect combination of thrilling racing and an atmosphere made for socialising.
Several competitive handicaps make up the card on Friday, promising an exhilarating afternoon’s racing, while Saturday’s highlight is the Victoria Cup, a valuable seven-furlong Heritage Handicap that tends to attract proven course specialists and interesting, less exposed youngsters alike.
Cape Byron was a memorable winner in 2019, going on to land The Wokingham Stakes a month later. It is likely that some of the 2023 participants will return to contest this, or another of Royal Ascot’s major handicaps.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses.
During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
