THERE’S YOU YOU, THEN THERE’S 20-24 JUNE ASCOT.COM

C H A I R M A N ’ S W E L C O M E

Welcome to the Spring Family Raceday, our final Jumps meeting of the 2022/23 season.

It has been a curtailed winter season at Ascot with two of our major meetings, at Christmas and in January, lost to the cold weather. As a result, we have staged just one Grade 1 contest but it was well worth the wait as Shishkin’s performance in the Betfair Ascot Chase was one of the highlights of the entire Jumps season.

Although he did not manage to follow up at the Cheltenham Festival we look forward to seeing Shishkin at Aintree and next season he will step up to run over three miles It also looks likely that we will see Our Power, winner of the Bateaux London Gold Cup in October, in the Grand National and he goes there as one of the leading British hopes for the race.

Today, £170,000 of prize money is on offer, including the £40,000 Royal Ascot Racing Club Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. It looks an exceptionally strong renewal with many of the contenders having run in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. It is also great to see old favourites Two For Gold and Larry in the Memberships At Ascot Veterans’ Handicap Chase.

Our grateful thanks go to today’s sponsors including Soil Science and LK Bennett as well as all of those who have supported our Jumps racing programme throughout the season.

You will notice that our first race has been donated to Ascot United Warriors football team, a Special Olympics side for players with learning difficulties that Ascot is sponsoring through the Ascot Racecourse Supports programme. They are celebrated a victory in their first ever game last weekend and we hope they enjoy their visit to Ascot.

Off the track, there are a wide range of activities to get involved in, all linked to a countryside Easter theme. With face painting, pony rides, animal displays including sheepdogs and alpacas, arts and crafts, egg and spoon races and much more on offer, there should be something to keep all ages entertained throughout the afternoon.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day and we are thrilled to have Autism in Racing on site again with 17 families due to make use of the facility You will also have the chance to vote in the 2023 Royal Ascot Schools Art competition, so do head to the Exhibition Hall to see all of the entries

Our next meeting is Royal Ascot Trials Day on 3rd May, a high-class fixture that signals the start of the Flat season at Ascot. We hope to see you then.

Yours sincerely,

W E L C O M E 1

RACING PAGES

Your guide to all of today’s races 20-51

PAGES 20-22

1st Race 1. 50pm

The Ascot Racecourse Supports Ascot United Warriors Maiden Hurdle Race (GBB Race)

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles, three and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and will almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience they gain today.

PAGES 26-28

2nd Race 2.25pm

The Soil Science Novices’ Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

Our first handicap on the card is a two miles and five furlongs novice hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

PAGES 30-33

3rd Race 3.00pm

The Royal Ascot Racing Club Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Race (GBB Race)

The third race on the card is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds only, also known as juveniles. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105

PAGES 36-38

4th Race 3.35pm

The LK Bennett Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

Our feature race of the day is a two miles and one furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

PAGES 40-42

5th Race 4.10pm

The Colts and Fillies Club

Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race (GBB Race)

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. This particular two mile, seven and a half furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races and have a handciap rating between 0-110.

PAGES 44-45

6th Race 4.45pm

The Memberships At Ascot

Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Leg 5 of The Veterans Chase Series)

Our penultimate race, as the race title suggests, is a veterans’ steeple chase designed specifically for those in the later stages of their National Hunt careers

These types of races often attract some past stars of the sport and provide a perfect opportunity for fans to catch a final glimpse of their equine heroes before they are retired. In order to qualify for this three miles handicap, horses must be ten-years-old or older and be officially rated between 0 and 150

PAGES 48-51

7th Race 5.20pm

The Ascot Shop Handicap Hurdle Race

Our finale is a two miles, five and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race which has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards rated from 0 to 140. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

22. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

23. Jockey’s name and photo

If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS THE ASCOT UNITED WARRIORS

Today, we welcome Ascot United Warriors, a team of footballers aged from 18-39 who are affiliated with Special Olympics GB The Ascot Racecourse Supports community programme is sponsoring the kit this season for the players who have learning disabilities including autism, down syndrome and dyspraxia. They travel from as far as Farnham, Camberley, Bracknell and Reading for training every Sunday evening at Ascot United FC.

Their first ever competitive match took place on 26th March when they took on St Albans Special Olympics team achieving a 7-5 win, with their Captain scoring 4 wonderful goals; the first from the half-way line!

Donna Molyneux, whose son Brett Edge plays for the team, is the driving force behind the success of the initiative, supported by Ascot United and its chairman Simon Negus The football club has sourced FA funding for coach Jake Perry, who travels from West London each Sunday to coach the team.

Donna said, “Jake had not trained adults with special needs before and his calm and encouraging persona has had a huge impact on the team. For the parents of the young men this has been tremendous, as they see their sons now engaging with their peers on and off

the field and learning new skills which keep them fit and healthy and give them an avenue to form new friendships. We find that once their educational journey has ended at school, they struggle to gain employment and are often at home alone playing on their computer or watching TV. This team has provided the members with a purpose. I have seen the confidence grow both in their footballing skills, but perhaps more importantly, the team’s social and emotional skills as they feel safe and comfortable together in this very special team.”

In the team’s honour, we have named our 1.50pm race “The Ascot Racecourse Supports Ascot United Warriors Maiden Hurdle” with players having the privilege of picking the best turned out horse alongside presenting trophies to winning connections

The team are keen for new players to join and if you are male, aged 18+ and have a recognised learning disability, then you would be welcome to come along on a Sunday evening at 5pm to Ascot United. You can also contact Donna directly at molyneuxdonna16@gmail.com

LOCAL SCHOOLS ART COMPETITION

Our annual Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition is underway with schools invited to submit artwork with a “Coronation/Royal Ascot” theme to commemorate this special year. This community project provides children and schools in the local area an opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the Ascot Heath Tunnel, creating a colourful walkway for both Royal Ascot visitors and local residents

Pupils aged 4-14 years from schools within a 5-mile radius of the racecourse were asked to submit their artwork to be in with a chance of winning cash prizes of £1,000 for their school, as well as Amazon vouchers to spend for themselves.

Today, the short-listed entries are displayed in the Exhibition Hall. Please come and vote for your favourites or alternatively you can view and vote online at: www.ascot.com/school-art-competition Ascot staff have also cast their votes and Flat Jockey, Ryan Moore, has been asked to pick his favourite.

Winners and runners up will be announced at the beginning of May with cheque presentations taking place at our Victoria Cup Raceday on Saturday, 13th May 2023.

We hope you enjoy the wonder of a child’s perspective of Royal Ascot and the Coronation as much as we do!

RETURN YOUR RE-CUP

The race is on to reduce plastic waste

Racegoers at all meetings are asked to place their used glasses into one of over 200 dedicated RE-CUP bins around site or return them to the bars. Glasses are subsequently washed and returned to the racecourse.

RACING TOGETHER COMMUNITY DAY

THURSDAY 25 MAY 2023

Racing’s national day of volunteering in support of local people, Racing Together Community Day, returns on Thursday 25 May, when all those involved in the sport are invited to give their time for good causes. Racing organisations already signed up include Tattersalls, Goffs UK, Lycetts, the Thoroughbred Breeders Association and a wide variety of trainers, racecourses and education providers such as the British Racing School and National Horseracing College. This year there is a particular focus on food poverty within local areas and partnerships with Newmarket Open Door and The Lambourn Junction are creating focal points for donations within racing communities.

John Blake, CEO of Racing Together, said: “We’re pleased to announce this year’s date for the popular Racing Together Community Day and hope to build on last year’s efforts, which engaged 65 racing organisations and gave us wonderful stories of racing teams helping out at food banks, hospices, local community areas and much more. ”

The Bank Holiday to mark the Coronation of King Charles III takes place two weeks prior on Monday 8 May and as part of ‘The Big Help Out’ initiative people are being invited to take part in volunteering projects within their local community Racing’s volunteering efforts throughout May will form part of The Big Help Out initiative and Racing Together’s Community Day.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants.

Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, as previously, some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces

Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses

For Jump racing, we introduced the one-fit padded hurdles for the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so Vets generally find fewer superficial

injuries with horses running over padded hurdles compared to the traditional birch hurdle.

At the start of the 2022/23 season,we switched from orange to white markings on our wood and vinyl padding of take-off boards, guard rails and top boards Research from Exeter University showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

An action-packed couple of days at Ascot with the perfect combination of thrilling racing and an atmosphere made for socialising.

Cape Byron was a memorable winner in 2019, going on to land The Wokingham Stakes a month later. It is likely that some of the 2023 participants will return to contest this, or another of Royal Ascot’s major handicaps.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
