CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

Welcome to the opening dayofThe Peroni Nastro Azzurro MayRacing Weekend.

With the Guineas nowrun, RoyalAscotwill soon be upon us, and we arelooking forwardtoChaldean and Mawj as well as the other protagonists from Newmarket lining up again hereat Ascotinjustoverfiveweeks’ time. Those domestic stars will be joined by astrong looking setofinternational entries, headed by the Australian sprinters Coolangatta and Artorius for what is shaping up to be another memorable RoyalMeeting.

More immediatelythough, the Class 2PeroniNastroAzzurroHandicap which opens the cardtodaycan be auseful pointer to futuresuccess.Itwas wonlastyear by Shadwell’sAlfaila who went on to run in the Jersey Stakes beforeprogressing to win twice at Group 3level towardsthe end of the season, so the form is likelytobe worth following again today.

That race forms part of ITV Racing’s coveragethis afternoon along with the final dayofChester’s Boodles MayFestivalwhich will be broadcastonthe screens around the racecourse. The featurerace is the tote Chester Cup and the field includes former AscotStakes winner Reshoun as well as the versatile Tritonic, twice awinner at Ascotoverhurdles and aRoyal Ascotrunner-up.

We arethrilled that Peroni Nastro Azzurroare title sponsors of the weekend for the firsttime. Peroni Nastro AzzurroisThe Official Beer of AscotRacecourse, and you will find it poured in our restaurants and bars around the racecourse.

Your guide to all of today’s races 22-58

PAGES22-23

1stRace1.50pm

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro Handicap Stakes

Today’sopener is aseven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 86 to 105 In ahandicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their levelofform shown so far.The aim is to ensurecompetitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry moreweightthan alower rated rival. As aguide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lowerend of the scale whilstthe very bestperformers would be rated as high as 130

PAGES28-30

2nd Race 2.25pm

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro Apprentice Handicap Stakes

This twomile handicap race is for four-year-olds and upwardswhich have been rated from 71 to 90.Toqualify for ahandicap rating horses musthave run at leastthree times in aFlat race in Britain, or have run in no more than twoFlat races run in Britain and wonatleastone of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in ahandicap.Insimple terms ahorse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb morethan arival rated 80.

PAGES34-36

3rd Race 3.00pm

The British EBF 40th Anniversary

Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes

(EBF Restricted Qualifier)

This race is afive furlong maiden stakes for two-year-old fillies only, which areEBF eligible .Maiden races provide astarting point for young horses that areyet to recordavictory and mostwill be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts.Previous experience can count for alot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles aremorethan capable of landing the prize at the firsttime of asking.

PAGES44-45

4th Race 3.35pm

The DUAL Maiden Fillies’ Stakes

This one mile and twofurlong contestfor fillies aged three-years-old is another maiden stakes -arace for horses that have yet to recordaracecourse victory. Thereare avariety of reasons whythe older horses in this race could still be maidens.Stoutlybredhorses areunlikelytobeseen at their bestoverthe shorter distances of their juvenile season whilsta setback or injury can curtail even the mostprecociouslybredhorse’s two-year-old career

PAGES48-50

5th Race 4.10pm

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro

“Live EveryMoment” Handicap Stakes

The fifth race on today’scardisanother handicap over six furlong for four-year-olds and upwardswhich have been rated from 76 to 95.Once ahorse has qualified for ahandicap rating this is regularlyreassessed.A below-par effort could result in areduced rating whilst astrongperformance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses areentered to race beforetheir handicap rating has been reviewedand so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they areallotted a mandatory penalty –usually6lb

PAGES52-53

6th Race 4.45pm

The Just Around The Corner Ascot Handicap Stakes

Our penultimate race is another contestoversix furlong. However, this is for three-year-olds onlywhich have been rated from 63 to 82. Likemosthandicaps on the Flat, this race is also open to horses that arerated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate aminimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of howlow their rating is.This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered adisadvantage.

PAGES56-58

7th Race 5.20pm

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro

“Serve With Style” Handicap Stakes

Our finale is aone mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85 Likeall handicaps on today’scard, this means that should ahorse rated 75 takepart they would be required to carry 5lb morethan arival rated 70

JIM CROWLEY

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in asufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make anumerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. Ahorse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot aseparate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

23. Jockey’s name and photo

If there is anumber next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfareofhorses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improveour facilities on and off the track to ensureweprovide the very bestcareand attention for all participants.Nowhereis this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.

The keyelements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created asafer surface for the horses, wherepreviouslysome less experienced runners had occasionallyshied at the differing surfaces.

Further improvements to equine welfareprovision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016.Increased in size to accommodate largefield races more comfortably, the Unsaddling EnclosureLawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade

from the crownofanadjacent maturetree as well as arepositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specificallyqualified equine vets areon duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses.During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend acasualty generallywithin aminute –asfastasthe paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.

Ascot’stwo permanent veterinary boxesare supplemented with an X-Raymachine for the major meetings to assistwith swift diagnosis beforeadministration of treatment on site or anymovement necessary to equine hospitals. Thereare twoequine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascotinclude a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

ROYAL ASCOTLOCAL SCHOOLS ART COMPETITION

We are pleased to announce the winners of our Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition which saw pupils aged 4-14 from 20 local schools send in their entries which this year focused on aCoronation theme. Over 1,700 online votes were received and winning students won cash prizes of £1,000 for their school, as well as Amazon vouchers to spend on themselves. On the second day of the May Racing Weekend we will be presenting prizes to the winners and runners up plus the schools on the podium.

Since 2018, this community project has provided children and schools in the local area with an opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the Ascot Heath Tunnel, creating acolourful walkway for both Royal Ascot visitors and local residents. We also asked Ryan Moore, leading flat jockey, to pick his favourite which was Jemima Cantello-Taylor’s “Highly Commended” image of The King

HORSE WELFARE

At all meetings there is ateam of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend acasualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient acalm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around afallen horse.

In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
