Welcome to the second day of The Peroni Nastro Azzurro May Racing Weekend.
This is an important period in the Flat racing season with the two Guineas Classics run and the Derby trials now underway. Soon it will be Royal Ascot and of course we had our own trials day just last week where impressive performances from Coltrane and Cold Case put them in the frame for the Gold Cup and Commonwealth Cup respectively.
Today, the Peroni Nastro Azzurro Victoria Cup takes centre stage. The £100,000 Heritage Handicap is the first of several very valuable seven-furlong races at Ascot throughout the season. This race was won in 2019 by Cape Byron who went on to win the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot. It is likely that many of today’s participants will return here in June to contest that six furlong sprint or another of Royal Ascot’s major handicaps
We are thrilled that Peroni Nastro Azzurro are title sponsors of the weekend for the first time. Peroni Nastro Azzurro is The Official Beer of Ascot Racecourse and you will find it poured in our restaurants and bars around the racecourse. We are also extremely grateful to the Carey Group for their continued support as a race sponsor. Our penultimate race today celebrates the winners and runners-up of the annual Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition and we are delighted to be hosting all the teachers and children for tea in the Windsor Forest Restaurant. They will be invited to judge the best turned out horse for that race and to present the trophies to winning connections before joining us again on the Saturday of Royal Ascot to form a guard of honour for the jockeys.
Our next meeting is of course Royal Ascot which runs from 20th to 24th June. We hope to see you there.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & ChairmanYour guide to all of today’s races 18-58
PAGES 18-20
1st Race 1. 30pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro Handicap Stakes
Today’s opener is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for four-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 24-26
2nd Race 2.05pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
This race is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upward fillies’ only. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.
PAGES 30-34
3rd Race 2.40pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro Victoria Cup (Heritage Handicap)
This race is a seven furlong heritage handicap which has the same conditions as the previous race but is for four-year-olds and upwards. A heritage handicap in more basic terms is a handicap that is worth more than £50,000 and is open to horses rated 0-105 Due to the decent prize money on offer, they are usually highly-competitive and attract many top handicappers from both Britain and Ireland.
PAGES 40-41
4th Race 3.10pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro Novice Stakes
This five furlong Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
PAGES 46-47
5th Race 3.45pm
The Carey Group Handicap Stakes
This race is a one mile and two furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
PAGES 50-52
6th Race 4.20pm
The Royal Ascot Local Schools
Art Competition Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
Our penultimate race is a one mile and two furlong handicap race that has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated between 66 and 85 However, horses officially rated in excess of 85 are also eligible to take part. The conditions of this race stipulate that the maximum weight to be carried by a horse rated 85 would be 10st 2lb, so should a horse rated 87 be entered to run, they would be asked to carry 2lb more than the top weight – 10st 4lb, unless recieving the weight allowance for being a three-year-old.
PAGES 56-58
7th Race 4.55pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Handicap Stakes
Our finale is a six furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

First brewed in 1963, Peroni Nastro Azzurro exemplifies the traditions of Italian craftsmanship, passion, and flair – blending the finest ingredientsincluding hops, barley, and the extra special Nostrano dell’Isola maize grown exclusively for Peroni in Northern Italy. This helps to give the beer its uniquely crisp and refreshing taste, and its distinctive light, golden colour. The iconic Peroni Nastro Azzurro brand has recently added two more varieties to the portfolio: Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% has been developed with new innovative dealcoholisation technology to deliver the same uplifting taste, with zero alcohol. And Peroni Nastro Azzurro Stile Capri - a brand-new, refreshing ‘sunshine’ lager featuring a subtle hint of Italian lemon and lower bitterness to deliver exceptional quality, inspired by the taste and scent of Capri island just off Italy’s Amalfi coast. Please drink responsibly.
The European Breeders’ Fund was established in 1983 and is funded predominantly by contributions from stallion owners. In Great Britain, the British EBF have provided over £40,000,000 of additional prize money to the racing industry. ebfstallions.com

BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHHH The world’s top-rated turf horse, who has made spectacular progress since his debut last June, most recently justifying short odds in the Lockinge at Newbury where he easily beat Real World and completed a Group 1 hat-trick (first two legs came in last year’s Moulin and here in the QEII); acts on good to firm and good to soft ground, still unbeaten (7-7) and has genuine claims to being the best miler since Frankel, with 1m2f aspirations for him also on the cards later on; looks set to produce another display of sheer class. 22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
23. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy
The countdown has started for the 2023 Racing Together Community Day, to be held this year on 25th May with activity taking place throughout the month.
Over 55 racing organisations are already signed up for racing’s national day of employee volunteering and the day is promising once again to have a huge impact nationwide. One focus of this year’s activity is helping to tackle the current food crisis, and Racing Together has been working closely with The Racing Centre in Newmarket, the charity Racing Welfare and individual businesses and foodbanks to create drop-offs for collections in Malton, Lambourn and Newmarket.
Colleagues nationwide are running litter picking drives around their local areas and tidying public spaces such as the walkway in Lambourn and roundabouts outside Ludlow Racecourse. Trainers are doing their bit with Ed Walker and Claire Kubler leading activities in Lambourn. There are plenty of racecourses signed up, with Ascot teaming up with the Racecourse Association to run an afternoon tea for local day care centres.
Community Day will be forming part of The Big Help Out, the volunteering initiative set up by King Charles III to honour and celebrate his coronation. There is still time to sign up and create a fun and meaningful activity for a cause or organisation in your area. Please contact florence@racingtoschool.co.uk for more details and to share your plans and ideas.

We are pleased to announce the winners of our Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition which saw pupils aged 4-14 from 20 local schools send in their entries which this year focused on a Coronation theme. Over 1,700 online votes were received and winning students won cash prizes of £1,000 for their school, as well as Amazon vouchers to spend on themselves. Today we will be presenting prizes to the winners and runners up plus the schools on the podium. Since 2018, this community project has provided children and schools in the local area with an opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the Ascot Heath Tunnel, creating a colourful walkway for both Royal Ascot visitors and local residents. We asked Ryan Moore, leading flat jockey, to pick his favourite which was Jemima Cantello-Taylor’s “Highly Commended” image of The King.
In recognition of this initiative, we have named our 4.20pm race “The Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition Fillies’ Handicap Stakes”. The students will have the honour of choosing the best turned out horse and presenting trophies to winning connections. We are taking a photograph of all the winners, runners up and teachers from the respective schools on the podium to commemorate this year’s competition which will also join the artwork in the Heath Tunnel.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £ 2,676,727 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from May to August 2023.
