Royal Ascot: ABrief History
“Ideal for horsestogallop at full stretch.” Thesewere the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the historyofAscot Racecourse. It waswhilstriding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she firstsaw the land that hadsuch potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she haddiscovered, Ascot’sinaugural event –Her Majesty’s Plate –was held here upon her requestthat very same year. For morethan 300 years since, the patronageofthirteen monarchs hashelped makeAscotone of the world’s best-lovedracecourses.
The racecourse waslaid out by William Lowen and Ascot’sfirst event washeld on Saturday 11th August1711, with its firstfour-daymeeting takingplace in 1768.Apermanentbuilding waserected to hold justover1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later.Itwas at the beginning of the nineteenth century wherethe origins of today’sRoyal Meeting lie.
It wasaroundthe same timethatthe rootsof today’straditionalRoyal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, aclose friend of the Prince Regent, decreed thatmen of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons
Over the years, this evolvedinto the wearing of morning suitsand equallyformal attire for ladies, including of course hats –and today, the issuing of the Lookbookmaintains RoyalAscot’sunique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their ownpersonal style.
Ascot’sfirstmajor redevelopment came to fruitionin1954 withthe relocationofthe Straight Mile north to allowmorespace behind the stands. This wasquicklyfollowed by the construction of the Queen ElizabethII Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.
Ascot’smuch-lovedtradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardshipofLadyBeaumont, wife of then Clerk of theCourse, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.
2002 sawplenty of changetothe established pattern of RoyalAscotasitexpanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork &Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes, which wasrenamed again in 2012 to The DiamondJubileeStakes andtoThe Platinum Jubilee Stakes in 2022.

The featureGroup 1race on the final daynow honoursHer Late Majesty in perpetuity as The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes
AscotRacecourseclosed in September2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meetingwas staged at York in 2005.The new Ascot Grandstand wasofficiallyopened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget,on20th June 2006.
In 2009,the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedentedfourth Gold Cup,beating the recordset by Sagarointhe 1970s.A statue commemorating thegreat stayer’s remarkable achievement nowstands in the Parade Ring.
Ascotcelebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the followingyear, the RoyalMeetingplayed its part in The Queen’sDiamond Jubilee celebrations.Onthe track, the incomparable Frankel wonThe Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar justclung on in adramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
In 2013,Estimate wonThe Gold Cup in the famous royalcolours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having wonThe Queen’s Vase the previous year.
2015 wasall about one man –RyanMoore. Arguablythe world’sbestjockey,Moore won no less than nine of the 30 races over the week, amodern dayrecord.
Also that year,Royal Ascothosted the inaugural running of The CommonwealthCup,bringing thenumber of Group 1races at the meeting to eight. The race has quicklyestablished itself as afeatureofthe week and in 2019 it wasthe joint-highestrated three-year-oldrace in the world.
2016 sawTepin land The Queen Anne Stakes for Mark Casse, who followedinthe footsteps of compatriotWesley Ward as an American Royal Ascot-winning trainer.
In 2017,the VillageEnclosurewas opened to great acclaim, the firstnew enclosureatthe RoyalMeeting for 100 years.Itprovides a unique perspective being located on the inside of the track looking back towardsthe final furlongwithAscot’sfamous Grandstand as a backdrop.
In 2018,prize money topped £7 million for the firsttimeand this year it is arecord£9.52 million. No race will be run for less than £100,000 and twoGroup 1races –the Prince of Wales’sStakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes arebothworth £1 million. This has been significant in terms of maintaining the worldwide appealofthe RoyalMeeting as it continues to attract the besthorses from across the world.
In recent years, the magnificent Stradivarius claimed threeGoldCupsunder FrankieDettori who heads into his final RoyalAscotthis year with 77 winners at the RoyalMeeting and hoping to add at leastone final winnertothat tally.
In 2014,Royal Ascotsaw an amazing Group 1 sprint double for the Powerfamilywith Sole Powerwinning The King’s Stand Stakes and Slade Powerfollowing up in The Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Royal Ascot -Race Histories
2.30pm The Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
Founded in 1840, the Queen Anne Stakes commemorates the monarch who established racing at Ascot in 1711. Run as the Trial Stakes until 1929, the Queen Anne Stakes was first awarded Group 3status in 1971, becoming Group 2in1984. The race, attracting Europe’s top older milers, achieved the highest three-year average rating of any Group 2race in Britain from 1999 to 2002 according to the then International Classifications and was elevated to Group 1status accordingly in 2003. Run as the opening race of the week since 2008, it will once again get the Royal Meeting underway and includes Frankel and Baaeed on the recent roll of honour.
3.05pm The Coventry Stakes (Group 2)
First run in 1890, the race was named after the 9th Earl of Coventry who was Master of the Buckhounds between 1886 and 1892. This is traditionally the first Group contest of the year for juveniles and as aresult attracts some of the very best precocious young horses, forming part of the high-class opening day card. Since the race was promoted to Group 2status in 2004 many top quality horses, including Canford Cliffs, Dawn Approach and Caravaggio, have won this before going on to achieve greatness.
3.40pm The King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
AStand Plate was first run on the Round course in 1837, becoming the Royal Stand Plate in 1858. The race was renamed the Queen’s Stand Plate in 1860 for two-year-olds, over the sprint distance of four furlongs, finally becoming the King’s Stand Plate in 1901. Today the race remains a sprint, althoughnow runover theminimum trip of five furlongs forthree-year-olds and upwards. In 2008itwas promoted to Group 1status. The 2019 renewal was officially the highest-quality sprint race in the world with arating of 120.25 after Blue Point and Battaash fought out the finish. Nature Strip was abrilliant winner for Australia in 2022 and ended the year as the world’s best sprinter.
4.20pm The St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
Named after the Tudor royal residence, the inaugural running of the St James’s Palace Stakes in 1834 was awalkover for the Derby winner Plenipotentiary. This race features the best male milers from the Classic generation, often attracting horses that have run in the British, French and Irish 2,000 Guineas. Frankel, Kingman and Palace Pier are recent stars to have won the race while the last two victors, Poetic Flare and Coroebus, both won the British 2,000 Guineas before following up at Royal Ascot.
5.00pm The Ascot Stakes (Handicap)
First run in 1839, the Ascot Stakes is run over two-and-a-half miles. Like the Gold Cup and Queen Alexandra Stakes, this race provides athoroughtest of stamina.Itisone of justfourraces at the RoyalMeeting in which thefield passes thewinningposttwice. As wellas attracting some high-class horses from the Jumpssphere, the race normallyfeatures horsesthat willgoontorun in the major staying handicapsthroughout the season including the Northumberland Plate and the Ebor.
5.35pm The Wolferton Stakes (Listed Race)
First run in 2002 as part of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, this is aListed race over 10 furlongs for four-year-olds and upwards, havingbeen aListed handicap until2017. Addeybb won the race in 2019 beforegoing on to Group 1 success around the world while John Gosden is the leading trainer with four victories.
6.10pm The Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap)
Staged over amile and three quarters, the Copper Horse Stakes was one of the six additional races to be run at Royal Ascot in 2020. Open to four-year-olds and upwards, Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race’s name being included and it now forms part of the permanently expanded programme.Itisinspiredbythe magnificent statue ofKingGeorgeIII –mounted on horseback –which marks the endofthe Long Walk in Windsor Great Park. The inaugural running was won by Fujaira Prince who went on to win the Ebor at York and was then second in the Group 1Irish St. Leger and third in the British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day.

Having posted her biggestperformance when fresh at this meeting lastyear,top-notch filly INSPIRAL holds very persuasive claims back hereonher seasonal debut. Judged on ratings and other factors, the Charlie Appleby-trained colts Modern Games (second choice) and Native Trail look the biggestthreats.Atbigger odds, the lightlyraced 4yos Cash and Triple Time areinteresting types who could well improveontheir ratings and getseriouslyinvolved.

Atenth Coventry Stakes win for Aidan O’Brien could be on the cards as RIVER TIBER boasts a compelling profile. Abig-money purchase as ayearling,he’sunbeaten in tworaces this spring and ought to be well suited by stepping up to today’slonger distance. If there’sahigh-class 2yoamong his rivals, itcould be Asadna, who looked something out of the ordinary when demolishing athin field at Ripon, aperformance backed up by the clock. Singing around the Bandstand
Racegoers in the Royal and Queen Anne Enclosures are invited to join in with the tradition of singing around the bandstand after racing concludes from 6.20pm.
It was the late Lady Jinny Beaumont, wife of Sir Nicky Beaumont, Clerk of the Course from 1969 to 1994, who first introduced this communal tradition that has become synonymous with Royal Ascot.
She was famed for conducting the band and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that abandstand was erected to recognise this prized Ascot tradition.
Union Jack flags are provided on afirst come first served basis, so come with agood voice and be prepared to sing along to classics such as Land of Hope and Glory, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Daisy Daisy and We’ll Meet Again.
Ascot Racecourse wouldlike to thankthe Band of the Household Cavalry whowillbeplaying throughout RoyalAscot 2023and John Park who will be leading the singing.

Feature Race Analysis
2000 Guineas winner Chaldean currently heads the betting in what looks a fascinating renewal of the St James’s Palace Stakes. Frankie Dettori has won this race three times in the last 10 years and will be hoping for a solid first day on his last visit to the Royal Meeting. Paddington was heavy backed before landing the Irish equivalent race in the hands of Ryan Moore and had favourite Royal Scotsman soundly beat on the day.
The unbeaten Cicero’s Gift takes a huge step up in class here but seems to be rapidly improving for the Charlie Hills stable. He beat the 103 rated Kolsai last time out by five-and-a-half-lengths at Goodwood and deserves a shot at this level. He seems to be better fancied than stablemate Galeron. The John & Thady Gosden-trained Mostabshir also needs to improve drastically to win this but scored impressively last time out, showing a nice turn of foot from the front end at York on quick ground.
Superlative Stakes winner Isaac Shelby showed a vast amount of promise as a juvenile and has subsequently matured nicely into a three-year-old, landing the Greenham Stakes with a bit in hand over Charyn Runner up at the France 2,000 Guineas last month, he makes this a highly competitive affair, and the booking of William Buick catches the eye. Indestructible rounds out the strong field of nine and will need to bounce back following a below-par effort in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot
The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeysisparamount at RoyalAscotand in recent years severalmajor changes have been made to improve welfare standards. Anew initiative at RoyalAscotthis year will see enhanced pre-race examinations carried out on everyhorse running throughout the week. The process involves:
•Acardiac assessment
•Atrotupover25 metres in astraight line
• An examination of the musculoskeletal system
These examinations aredesigned to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layerof protection so we knowhorses arelining up in the bestpossible health post-travel.
Ascothas invested significant amounts to improveequine welfareinrecent years. During the 2004-2006 redevelopment asafer racetrackwas created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.
In 2016,further improvements to equine welfareprovision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses
Five specificallyqualified equine vets are on duty everyday at RoyalAscotwho are dedicated to
the welfareofall the horses
During each race, vets followthe runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generallywithin aminute –asfastasthe paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.

Race Summary:
Zinc White would look averystrong contender on soft ground, even with his wide draw. He is one of four runners for Ian Williams, who wonthis race in 2019 and 2021 but whose other one to note on 2023 evidence, LawOfThe Sea, has also been drawn out wide. Lastyear’s runner-up Bring On The Night is alittle better off in 15 and has been ahot favourite in ante-postlists,straight on the shortlistgiven theAscotStakes recordofhis trainer Willie Mullins. However, the top two options maybeCalling The Wind, who justlooks suretorun well, and IRISH LULLABY(nap), who has much moretoprove than mostinstamina terms, not having raced beyond 1m6f, but has hinted stronglyathidden depths in her bestperformances.Novel Legend and Zoffee also require apositive mention.
