Royal Ascot: A Brief History

“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.” These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event – Her Majesty’s Plate – was held here upon her request that very same year. For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.

The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768 A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.

It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons

Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats – and today, the issuing of the Lookbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.

Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.

Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.

2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes, which was renamed again in 2012 to The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and to The Platinum Jubilee Stakes in 2022.

4

The feature Group 1 race on the final day now honours Her Late Majesty in perpetuity as The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes

Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005 The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006.

In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring.

Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year.

2015 was all about one man – Ryan Moore. Arguably the world’s best jockey, Moore won no less than nine of the 30 races over the week, a modern day record.

Also that year, Royal Ascot hosted the inaugural running of The Commonwealth Cup, bringing the number of Group 1 races at the meeting to eight. The race has quickly established itself as a feature of the week and in 2019 it was the joint-highest rated three-year-old race in the world.

2016 saw Tepin land The Queen Anne Stakes for Mark Casse, who followed in the footsteps of compatriot Wesley Ward as an American Royal Ascot-winning trainer.

In 2017, the Village Enclosure was opened to great acclaim, the first new enclosure at the Royal Meeting for 100 years. It provides a unique perspective being located on the inside of the track looking back towards the final furlong with Ascot’s famous Grandstand as a backdrop.

In 2018, prize money topped £7 million for the first time and this year it is a record £9.52 million. No race will be run for less than £100,000 and two Group 1 races – the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes are both worth £1 million. This has been significant in terms of maintaining the worldwide appeal of the Royal Meeting as it continues to attract the best horses from across the world.

In recent years, the magnificent Stradivarius claimed three Gold Cups under Frankie Dettori who heads into his final Royal Ascot this year with 77 winners at the Royal Meeting and hoping to add at least one final winner to that tally.

In 2014, Royal Ascot saw an amazing Group 1 sprint double for the Power family with Sole Power winning The King’s Stand Stakes and Slade Power following up in The Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Royal Ascot - Race Histories

2.30pm The Albany Stakes (Group 3)

This race was first run in 2002 as the Henry Carnarvon Stakes, honouring the former racing manager of Queen Elizabeth II, and proved so successful that it was promoted to Group 3 status in 2005. Restricted to two-year-old fillies, the six-furlong event provides one of the first opportunities of the season for promising types to prove their ability and go on to harbour Guineas aspirations.

3.05pm The Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

The Commonwealth Cup was a completely new race in 2015 and joined the King’s Stand Stakes and Platinum Jubilee Stakes to become the third Group 1 sprint at Royal Ascot. The race, run over six furlongs, is restricted to three-year-old colts and fillies and was introduced as a Europe-wide measure to create a better Pattern for young sprinters and improve the quality of sprint races across the continent. Several races in the run up to the Commonwealth Cup were promoted in tandem, including the Commonwealth Cup Trial at Ascot in April to Group 3. The 2019 renewal of the Commonwealth Cup, won by Advertise, was the joint highest rated three-year-old race in the world that year.

3.40pm The Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap)

Originally known as the Bessborough Stakes, named after the 5th Earl of Bessborough, who was Master of the Buckhounds between 1848 and 1866, the race was renamed the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes in 1999. First run in 1914 as a five-furlong event for two-year-olds, it has now evolved into a middle distance handicap for three-year-olds and upward.

4.20pm The Coronation Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

First run in 1840 to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Victoria two years previously, the Coronation Stakes is for three-year-old fillies and regularly attracts the winners of the British, Irish and French 1,000 Guineas. It has also started to attract some of the top American fillies and so is a race that acts to crown the best of that year’s Classic generation over a mile. It was promoted to Group 1 level in 1988 and the most recent filly to follow up from a Guineas victory was Alpha Centauri who broke the track record when winning in 2018.

5.00pm The Sandringham Stakes (Handicap)

Originally registered as the Fern Hill Stakes, this race was part of the traditional Heath Day card on the Saturday after Royal Ascot. It was renamed after the Norfolk royal residence when the Royal Meeting was expanded to five days as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. This is a competitive handicap over a mile, limited to three-year-old fillies only.

5.35pm The King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2)

Formerly known, and still colloquially referred to as the Ascot Derby, this race was inaugurated in 1834 and regularly featured horses of both sexes that had competed in the middle-distance Classics First run as the King Edward VII Stakes in 1926, it is now restricted to three-year-old colts and geldings. Three of the most recent winners, Japan, Pyledriver and Alenquer, all went on to Group 1 success.

6.10pm The Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes (Handicap)

The final race today was among six prizes added to the Royal Ascot race programme in 2020. A five-furlong sprint for three-year-olds, Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race name, which recognises the Monarchy’s official Scottish residence. A race with similar conditions used to be run regularly on the Saturday Heath Day card and featured as part of the full Royal Ascot programme in 2002 and 2003 as the Balmoral Handicap. Upon its return in 2020, it was won by Art Power who went on to win a Group 3 at Naas before contesting the major Group 1 sprints later in the season.

HHHH Half-sister to last season’s Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Lezoo and fetched 240,000gns this year; thrown into a 6f Group 3 at Naas (good) first time out and once in the clear she finished with the wind in her sails to push Porta Fortuna to a neck; that was a performance packed with potential and she has to be feared. Race Summary:

This has the makings of a quality Albany with an array of unexposed winners, who looked so good on their debuts, locking horns None created a stronger impression than JABAARA, who whistled home once seeing daylight at Newmarket, and formlines through the third that day bode well. Second choice is Persian Dreamer, who looked impressive first time out and a blind eye can be turned to her defeat at York. Matrika is third best after defying a market drift at the Curragh and winning newcomers from her yard usually turn out decidedly smart. Carla’s Way turned some heads at Doncaster and she’s a good looker with serious potential, while Porta Fortuna and Navassa Island are other major players after dominating an Irish Group 3.

A Heroes’ Welcome

SUPPORTING EVERY MEMBER OF THE MILITARY FAMILY

Ascot Racecourse is again proud to welcome the three principal single service Armed Forces charities to Royal Ascot, namely the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Each charity works tirelessly to support military personnel, past and present, and their families in times of need with a wide range of practical, emotional and financial support. They would not, however be able to provide this vital level of care without the public’s support.

Our long-term support of the charities includes a donation from the sale of certain beverages across our enclosures during Royal Ascot, which in 2022 amounted to over £17,000, and a percentage of sales donated from attending concessionaires In addition, we provide 2-for-1 ticket offers for all serving military, many of whom will be with us today to celebrate Armed Forces Day, and a dedicated Armed Forces Bar.

The charities are our official bucket collectors today and you will see many of their volunteers across the site. Please donate if you are able.

We thank you for your support.

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity Denzil’s Story

When Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, Denzil, then aged 25, was a Lance Corporal in the Anti-Tank Platoon, 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. During the Battle of Mount Longdon he was hit by a mortar bomb and suffered serious injuries, losing his left leg.

In recent years, his steep and uneven driveway was preventing him from leaving home. The charity helped fund essential resurfacing work, which enabled Denzil to enjoy much greater independence and freedom.

Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot

With 77 Royal Ascot victories to his name, and hoping to add more in his final year, Frankie Dettori is the second most successful jockey ever at the Royal Meeting. A favourite with the crowd, who adore his charm, enthusiasm and trademark flying dismount, he will be much missed in the future. But for now, let’s remember some of his key Royal Ascot moments:

1987 - Frankie has his first Royal Ascot ride on Merle in the Royal Hunt Cup, finishing sixth

1990 - His first winner - Markofdistinction in the Queen Anne Stakes

1992 - First Gold Cup victory on Drum Taps

1994 - Guides Lochsong to an effortless victory in the King’s Stand Stakes

1995 - Frankie’s only Royal Ascot winner for Queen Elizabeth II - Phantom Gold in the Ribblesdale Stakes

1995 - So Factual wins the Cork & Orrery Stakes, Frankie’s first winner at the Royal Meeting for Godolphin

1997 - Leading rider at Royal Ascot for the first time. He also claims the title in 1998 and 1999

2000 - Frankie misses riding at Royal Ascot following a plane crash but is in attendance on crutches to see Dubai Millennium win the Prince of Wales’s Stakes

2001 - Back in the Royal Ascot Winners’ Enclosure on Fantastic Light in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes

2003 - Leading rider at the Royal Meeting again and also in 2004

2011 - Rewilding wins an epic renewal of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes beating So You Think

2015 - 50th Royal Ascot winner with Osaila in the Sandringham Stakes

2015 - Undrafted wins the Diamond Jubilee Stakes – a first winner for Wesley Ward

2016 - Lady Aurelia storms to victory in the Queen Mary Stakes

2019 - Leading rider for the first time since 2004 with seven winners over the week

2020 - Alpine Star wins the Coronation Stakes meaning Frankie has won all eight Group 1 races at Royal Ascot, a unique feat

2022 - Inspiral wins the Coronation Stakes, his most recent winner taking him to 77 in total

22

Other noticeable achievements:

- Second winning most jockey of all time at Royal Ascot with 77 winners – only behind Lester Piggott on 116

- Leading rider seven times at Royal Ascot

- Eight Gold Cup victories

- Most successful jockey in the Ribblesdale Stakes with eight victories

- Most successful jockey in the Queen Anne Stakes with seven victories

- Ridden a Royal Ascot winner in 27 separate years

Race Summary:

Although short-priced Little Big Bear commands major respect despite a slight doubt over his Sandy Lane form, there are several plausible alternatives at bigger odds in a typically competitive Commonwealth Cup. LEZOO, who bagged Group 1 honours on her last 6f attempt and could well have more to offer back sprinting, is the first choice ahead of the improving Ocean Quest who should relish this test having been strong at the end of her races Those two appealing fillies have the bonus of a 3lb sex allowance. Sakheer (third choice) remains of strong interest and Noble Style may prove resurgent in first-time headgear, while Shaquille has clear possibilities if he handles the occasion. Little Big Bear faces stiffer competition than last time but his peak 2yo figure sets a high standard.

It was 2008 when this race was last won from a single-figure draw, by one who made all. Aimeric and Teumessias Fox look the most interesting candidates among those drawn low this time but preference is for something out a bit wider and top of the list are HMS PRESIDENT, Omniscient (the second reserve) and Al Nafir in that order HMS President is the only one of those three who has run this season and he’s been in the form of his life, looking sure to run well again today, but the potential of those two 4yo opponents, particularly the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Omniscient, has to be feared. Others to consider seriously include Maksud, Haunted Dream and Moracana.

Feature Race Analysis

Irish-trained fillies have won three of the last 10 renewals of the Coronation Stakes and Jessica Harrington has scored twice in the last 5 years. Today she saddles the hat-trick seeking Sounds Of Heaven who narrowly denied Queen For You last time out in a Listed contest at York.

Aidan O’Brien is no stranger to this race either, landing this in 2017 with the high-class Winter, and Meditate arrives at the Royal Meeting with a strong second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, with Comhra running a huge race back in third at 150/1. Meditate’s second in the Moyglare and sixth in the 1,000 Guineas clearly worked out well but she finished behind the fabulous filly Tahiyra on all three occasions, which could be the case again today. Dermot Weld clearly has a high-class talent on his hands and after failing to justify favouritism at Newmarket, she returned to the Curragh with a bang and won more cosily than the distance suggested.

Of the home-trained fillies, Mammas Girl is an interesting contender and looked very impressive on her first two outings. The soft ground may have not played to her strengths in the 1,000 Guineas, while the same comments apply to Rob Hornby’s ride Remarquee, who also finished down the field at Newmarket.

Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot

The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeys is paramount at Royal Ascot and in recent years several major changes have been made to improve welfare standards.

A new initiative at Royal Ascot this year will see enhanced pre-race examinations carried out on every horse running throughout the week. The process involves:

• A cardiac assessment

• A trot up over 25 metres in a straight line

• An examination of the musculoskeletal system

These examinations are designed to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layer of protection so we know horses are lining up in the best possible health post-travel.

Ascot has invested significant amounts to improve equine welfare in recent years

During the 2004-2006 redevelopment a safer racetrack was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.

In 2016, further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot who are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses.

During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Royal Ascot

Winners of the following races will earn automatic berths, travel and paid entry fees into the equivalent races at the 2023 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita:

•The Queen Anne Stakes

•The King’s Stand Stakes

•The Prince of Wales’s Stakes

• The Norfolk Stakes

All four races will be televised live and streamed in the U.S. as part of NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of Royal Ascot.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series presented by America’s Best Racing consists of the best races from around the world and awards each winner an automatic and free entry into the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

It’s simple, they win and they’re in.

In recent history, Queen Anne Stakes winners Barathea and Goldikova have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile while Prince of Wales’s Stakes winners Fantastic Light and Highland Reel went on to be successful in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

The winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, for two-year-olds over five furlongs, will receive a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint while the King’s Stand Stakes victor gains an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run over five and a half furlongs.

Plenty of other Royal Ascot races also have relevance for the Breeders’ Cup each year and in 2022 we saw the Albany Stakes winner, Meditate, go on to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf for Aidan O’Brien, Ryan Moore and Coolmore.

Reserves At Royal Ascot

The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.

This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.

Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any time up to 1.00pm the day before the race. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage.

Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage. In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.

Today’s race with a reserve running is The Sandringham StakesBellaphina

Singing around the Bandstand

Racegoers in the Royal and Queen Anne Enclosures are invited to join in with the tradition of singing around the bandstand after racing concludes from 6.20pm.

It was the late Lady Jinny Beaumont, wife of Sir Nicky Beaumont, Clerk of the Course from 1969 to 1994, who first introduced this communal tradition that has become synonymous with Royal Ascot.

She was famed for conducting the band and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that a bandstand was erected to recognise this prized Ascot tradition.

Union Jack flags are provided on a first come first served basis, so come with a good voice and be prepared to sing along to classics such as Land of Hope and Glory, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Daisy Daisy and We’ll Meet Again.

Ascot Racecourse would like to thank the Band of the Household Cavalry who will be playing throughout Royal Ascot 2023 and John Park who will be leading the singing.

Race Summary:

The step up to 1m could be just what MAGICAL SUNSET (nap) needs and she earns the vote on the back of her strong-staying Listed fourth over 7f at Epsom on Oaks day. Breege could also have untapped potential at 1m, with her first two attempts at this trip having come in Group 1s, and she is second choice ahead of the unexposed Gosden filly Coppice. Clounmacon, Ma Belle Artiste, Chelsea Green and Marksman Queen arrive following improved performances and could continue to progress, while Ballydoyle filly Unless could be on a handy mark and Sparks Fly and Novus will be interesting if transferring their winning slow-ground form to this quicker surface.

Race Summary:

It is hard to look beyond KING OF STEEL, who was a clear second in the Derby three weeks ago on his first run for Roger Varian and will take an awful lot of beating if reproducing that form. There are glimmers of hope for others, however, especially Artistic Star who was an 11l seventh in the Derby but produced an eye-catching finishing effort after possibly being unsuited by the track. Another factor to consider is that this might become tactical, in which case Derby ninth and possible pacesetter Dubai Mile may be the one to benefit. Arrest (Derby) and Continuous (Prix du Jockey Club) were disappointing last time but represent leading stables and should be capable of better

Race Summary:

Conquistador looks to have been laid out for this and he’s a runner of some note, better off in the weights with the horses he’s beaten in his two sprint wins for George Boughey. He is high on the list, with stablemate Danger Alert another who can’t be safely discounted. Harry Brown, Kerdos and Tatterstall all have better to come, while Tawalla bids to emulate Latin Lover in winning this under a penalty having won at Kempton the week before. Hispanic (second choice) was baulked early at York on his reappearance and found himself poorly positioned but on his only other 5f outing he produced a tremendous performance to win at the Curragh. A revival is likely today but he may still have to give best to JER BATT. The Barrons’ sprinter will need to continue on his upward curve to defy his new mark but his Musselburgh win was striking and his subsequent defeat at Chester certainly didn’t dent his reputation given how the race panned out.
