W E L C O M E

Welcome to the opening day of the Summer Mile Racing Weekend.

Today is the annual Property Raceday at Ascot which continues to be as popular and successful as ever in its 17th year. It is the property industry’s ‘day at the races’ and since its inception, has raised more than £3 million for a variety of charities.

It is fantastic to see so many businesses supporting the day again and we are hugely grateful to the Property Raceday Committee, all the organisers and especially the race sponsors, including Knights, Close Brothers, Long Harbour, Signature Capital and Tide. We hope everybody involved has a great day.

Just three weeks ago another memorable Royal Ascot came to a close with some wonderful stories and top-quality performances throughout the week. It was fantastic to witness Frankie Dettori sign off his Royal Ascot story with four winners, including a ninth Gold Cup success on Courage Mon Ami.

The highlight for many was the victory of Desert Hero for Their Majesties The King and Queen, a thrilling moment for them and the entire Royal Family and one which was enjoyed by millions around the world. Their Majesties’ continued patronage of British racing is so important, and we were delighted to welcome many members of the Royal Family throughout the week.

The Howden photography exhibition celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s close association with Royal Ascot is still in place on the Concourse of the Grandstand so please do take time to enjoy the special collection of images if you get the chance today. We hope you can join us again tomorrow when the Group 2 Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile is the feature race on an exciting card.

Yours sincerely,

1st Race 2.15pm

The Property Race Day

Apprentice Handicap Stakes

Today’s opener is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

PAGES 28-30

2nd Race 2.50pm

The Knights Nursery Handicap Stakes

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular six furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 80

PAGES 34-36

3rd Race 3.25pm

The Close Brothers Property Division

Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 71 to 90 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85

PAGES 44-46

4th Race 4.00pm

The Long Harbour Derek Lucie-Smith

British EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 76 to 95. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

PAGES 50-52

5th Race 4.35pm

The Signature Capital Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

PAGES 56-58

6th Race 5.10pm

The Tide Handicap Stakes

Our finale is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 95 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90

BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHHH The world’s top-rated turf horse, who has made spectacular progress since his debut last June, most recently justifying short odds in the Lockinge at Newbury where he easily beat Real World and completed a Group 1 hat-trick (first two legs came in last year’s Moulin and here in the QEII); acts on good to firm and good to soft ground, still unbeaten (7-7) and has genuine claims to being the best miler since Frankel, with 1m2f aspirations for him also on the cards later on; looks set to produce another display of sheer class. 22. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

23. Jockey’s name and photo

If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Frankie Dettori’s Royal Ascot story drew to a wonderful conclusion last month with four winners during the week, taking his career total at the Royal Meeting to a tally of 81.

After a frustrating opening day with three seconds, Frankie got on the scoresheet with Gregory in the Queen’s Vase on Wednesday before he guided Courage Mon Ami to a memorable victory in the Gold Cup, his ninth success in the meeting’s most prestigious race.

On the Friday he landed the opening Albany Stakes on Porta Fortuna as well as the Sandringham Stakes on Coppice and she will forever be remembered as Frankie’s final Royal Ascot winner

His 81 Royal Ascot winners takes him to second on the all-time list with only Lester Piggott ahead of him on 116

As Frankie’s farewell tour continues don’t miss him at the QIPCO King George Weekend, 28th

29th July, captaining the Europe team at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, 12th August, and for his final Ascot appearance at QIPCO British Champions Day, 21st October

THE RACE IS ON TO REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE

5 2 R AC I N G PAGE S

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.

The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.

Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade

from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
