OFFICIAL PROGRAMME £5.00
THERE’S
Welcome to the second day of the Summer Mile Racing Weekend.
Today’s feature race is the Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile, a Group 2 contest run over the Old Mile on the round course. It is always an intriguing contest, often filled with a combination of progressive horses coming through the ranks and those that have already competed at Group 1 level. Among the recent winners is Mohaather who went on to win the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in 2020
We are thrilled that the Cowley family is once again sponsoring the race in memory of Fred, who passed away in 2013, and we are delighted to welcome them to Ascot today.
Our grateful thanks also go to raceday sponsors, Magnum and Village Hotels, as well as Juddmonte for their support of the wider British developmental race programme including today’s seven furlong two-year-old novice stakes.
Off the track, we have a huge amount on offer at what is one of our dedicated family racedays From fairground rides to face painting and soft play to segways, there is something for all ages to enjoy. A full list of activities is available in these pages.
The fourth race on today’s card is The Ascot Racecourse Supports Children Heard and Seen Handicap Stakes, helping to promote the work the Oxfordshire-based charity does to support children, young people and their families who are impacted by parental imprisonment.
Ascot Racecourse Supports recently funded an activity in partnership with the charity ‘Give a Book’, that has culminated in the children creating artwork which you can see in the Grandstand Concourse today. We have also invited 20 families to enjoy the day with us in a dedicated picnic area. Tomorrow, we will host the annual Sebastian’s Action Trust Christmas in July event, with nearly 700 family members due to visit the racecourse. It is always a fantastic event and everybody at Ascot is excited to be able to facilitate and play a part in such a joyous and important occasion. Our final race today is named in support of the charity
Our next meeting is the QIPCO King George Weekend, Ascot’s midsummer highlight. We hope to see you then.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & ChairmanPAGES 11-13

Bake-Off Competition
Heritage Handicap Stakes
Today’s opener is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races
PAGES 34-36
2nd Race 2.20pm
The Fred Cowley MBE Memorial
Summer Mile Stakes (Group 2)
The feature race of the day, this one mile race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 2 contest and will attract some high-class horses. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 3lb and fillies 9st, although any runner which has already won a Group 2 race after 2022 will be issued with a 3lb penalty while Group 1 winners will incur a 5lb penalty
PAGES 40-42
3rd Race 2.55pm
The Juddmonte British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes
This seven furlong novice stakes is restricted to two-year-olds which are E.B.F eligible, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties for each race won.
PAGES 46-48
4th Race 3.30pm
The Ascot Racecourse Supports Children Heard And Seen Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
PAGES 52-54
5th Race 4.05pm
The Magnum Classic Ice Cream Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100
PAGES 60-62
6th Race 4.40pm
The Village Hotels Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
Our penultimate race is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 69 to 88. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
PAGES 64-66
7th Race 5.15pm
The Ascot Racecourse Supports Sebastian’s Action Trust Handicap Stakes
Our finale is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

21. Weight (stones/pounds)
22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
23. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
The world’s top-rated turf horse, who has made spectacular progress since his debut last June, most recently justifying short odds in the Lockinge at Newbury where he easily beat Real World and completed a Group 1 hat-trick (first two legs came in last year’s Moulin and here in the QEII); acts on good to firm and good to soft ground, still unbeaten (7-7) and has genuine claims to being the best miler since Frankel, with 1m2f aspirations for him also on the cards later on; looks set to produce another display of sheer class.
In March 2023, Ascot Racecourse Supports sponsored a competition in collaboration with educational charity, Learning to Work, that saw local schools compete to create a traybake with a coronation theme. Bakes were judged by Gemma Amor, 1711 Executive Head Chef, Jonathan Parker, 1711 Managing Director and celebrity chef, James Tanner
The top prize was to have the winning bakes available for racegoers to buy, and today we are delighted to showcase Churchmead School, Datchet’s “Coronation Sensation” and Cranbourne Primary School’s “Crownbourne Cakes” which are available to buy from the Lavazza Tierra outlet on the Grandstand Concourse.
The winners and runners up have also been invited to enjoy our family raceday today and in recognition of the initiative, we have named our 1.45 race “The Ascot/1711 Learning to Work Bake-Off Competition Heritage Handicap Stakes” with our culinary team presenting trophies to winning connections.

Born 25th May
1915 Frederick
Thomas Cowley was without doubt one of this country’s most prominent electrical engineers throughout the 20th century. Fred, as he was known in the industry was a true leader, a quiet, unassuming gentlemen, with a head for business, who was renowned and respected throughout the electrical engineering industry Fred started as a young Electrical Engineer with Fosters Transformers during which time he attained Chartered Electrical Engineer status and this led to him becoming the firm’s Chief Electrical Engineer
Fred left Fosters and in 1951 started his own business, Transformers and Rectifiers Limited, an electrical rewind/repair facility in Guildford. The success of this business necessitated moving to new premises 10 years later where he started building new equipment. As the years progressed, Fred expanded the business further to include Electrical Generators and Test Equipment. For his services to the industry Fred was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in 1999
Fred continued to hold the reins of his business until 2003 when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Despite this, Fred’s wife Anne was determined to retain his presence both in the business and socially which surely contributed in Fred surviving for another 10 years Sadly, Fred died in February 2013 and Anne sold his business interests in 2016.
During their life together, Fred and Anne became avid racegoers and loved the venues of Royal Ascot and the Epsom Derby. It is because of this, and in memory of her husband, that Anne has dedicated The Fred Cowley MBE Summer Mile in his name and has done so for the last 10 years since his death.
Together Anne and Fred started to acquire horses of their own and all of the Cowley horses wear the white and black boxed breast girth to match the silks Fred could not recognise the horses when running due to his illness but did identify them by the distinguished breast girth. Anne ensured that they attended most venues where their horses were racing and those of us who were also present knew that this bought great joy to both of them.
Today, Anne continues to own a stock of racehorses both here in the UK and jointly in the USA in association with her business partner, Jay Grandfield. In the USA, Anne and Jay share a 50% ownership in Justifyable Belle, out of Bow Bells/Justify which is trained by Eoin Harty in Kentucky
One of Anne’s earlier racehorses, Freddie’s Girl is now a broodmare and is stabled at Abbyville Stud in Ireland. Francescian, a yearling colt out of Freddie’s Girl/ Starspangledbanner, is also at Abbyville and was named in memory of Anne’s younger sister, Frances, who sadly passed away in 2022. Freddie’s Girl is now in foal with a filly sired by Dark Angel and who will be a full sister to Tip To Win.
Other horses bred by Freddie’s Girl are Marion’s Boy, sired by Mastercraftsman, and Caragio sired by Caravaggio Both horses are being trained by Roger Teal in Lambourn. Francescian will also be going to Lambourn to be trained by Roger.
Retired Jockey, Micky Fenton is now training Swift Butterfly, sired by Iffraaj, Marclaflo Diamond (Freddie’s Girl/Ten Sovereigns), named after Micky’s three daughters and Gurkha Girl (Freddie’s Girl/The Gurkha).

Today we are delighted to welcome beneficiaries of Children Heard and Seen (CHAS), a charity established in response to the lack of support available for children impacted by parental imprisonment. Whilst families of crime victims rightly receive support in the aftermath of an offence, the offender’s children, who are also completely innocent, are left isolated and without support, facing additional stigma and shame from their community.
CHAS supports children with a parent in prison in their own communities and is currently supporting 25 children in Berkshire. It offers 1-1 support with a focus on raising aspirations, improving mental health outcomes, and breaking the cycle of intergenerational offending with trained staff, volunteer mentoring, parent support, peer support groups for children, online activities and activity days.
Nationally, 65% of boys with a parent in prison go on to offend. Of the 850+ children that CHAS has supported since its inception, only four have gone on to commit an offence, a reduction to just 0.5%. CHAS is the only charity in the country supporting children with a parent in prison in their own communities.
As part of our Ascot Racecourse Supports programme, we sponsored a group activity in partnership with the charity ‘Give a Book’, that has culminated in the children creating artwork using The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy as inspiration. Their artwork is being exhibited in the Grandstand Concourse adjacent to the Ascot Shop.
In recognition of the charity’s work and our support, we have named our 3.30 race “The Ascot Racecourse Supports Children Heard and Seen Handicap Stakes”. The charity is our official bucket collector today so please donate if you are able.

Frankie Dettori’s Royal Ascot story drew to a wonderful conclusion last month with four winners during the week, taking his career total at the Royal Meeting to a tally of 81.
After a frustrating opening day with three seconds, Frankie got on the scoresheet with Gregory in the Queen’s Vase on Wednesday before he guided Courage Mon Ami to a memorable victory in the Gold Cup, his ninth success in the meeting’s most prestigious race.
On the Friday he landed the opening Albany Stakes on Porta Fortuna as well as the Sandringham Stakes on Coppice and she will forever be remembered as Frankie’s final Royal Ascot winner

Sebastian’s Action Trust has been in existence for nineteen years; ensuring that every one of the nearly six hundred families of seriously ill children they support receives the best possible care. The charity provides emotional, social, and practical support and remains present for them through the good days, the bad days and everything in between.
Since 2018, Ascot Racecourse Supports has been an active supporter of the charity via grant funding, raffle prizes and using its national platform to further raise the profile of its work. Ascot staff have also been able to participate in CSR days at the charity’s family outreach centre ‘The Woodlands’, in Crowthorne, Berkshire, helping with gardening and other volunteering duties
On Sunday 16th July 2023, the racecourse will host the charity’s annual ‘Christmas in July’ party for the fifth year running. This flagship event brings together the children and young people the charity cares for – some of whom will not live until December - and their families to have fun, spend time together and make memories that will last a lifetime.
The charity will have exclusive use of dedicated racecourse facilities in place for our Summer Mile Racing Weekend and is grateful for the collaboration and support of suppliers, entertainers, and concessionaires, who have generously agreed to return, or stay on until the Sunday for the families’ enjoyment.
In recognition of the event and as an advanced well done to the charity’s army of volunteers that will descend tomorrow to add sparkle to the day, we have named our 5.15pm race “The Ascot Racecourse Supports Sebastian’s Action Trust Handicap Stakes.”

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £ 2,676,727 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from May to August 2023.
