THERE’S PICKING THE HORSE, TH E, THEN THERE’S
DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP 12 TH AUGUST
WITH POST-RACING CONCERT HEADLINED BY CRAIG DAVID VISIT ASCOT.COM FOR TICKETS
Welcome to QIPCO King George Weekend, one of the summer highlights of the British Flat season.
Today sees over £100,000 in prize money on offer across our six-race card, with the John Guest Racing Handicap the feature at 3.35pm.
We extend a warm welcome to our sponsor of three races, John Guest Racing, who have been with us for 25 years. One of those races commemorates Ascot legend, Brown Jack, who dominated the Queen Alexandra Stakes at the Royal Meeting between 1929 and 1934, winning the race six times under jockey Steve Donoghue.
Owned by Sir Harold Wernher, Brown Jack also claimed the 1928 Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, as well as the Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup in an illustrious career, worthy of commemoration today.
We also welcome Chapel Down, sponsors of our third race and announced today as the Official English Sparkling Wine of Ascot Racecourse.
Our thanks also to today’s further sponsors; British EBF, Slingsby Gin, Berenberg and The October Club
The Berenberg sponsored October Club Fillies’ Handicap that concludes our card today is run in support of Schoolreaders, one of the many charity initiatives we engage with here through our Ascot Supports programme.
We are pleased to be hosting the photography exhibition opened at Royal Ascot in celebration of the late Queen, presented by Howden and Getty Images
We look forward to welcoming you back tomorrow for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, an event that features a clash for the ages with the first and second from the 2023 Derby and a number of other top-class horses due to run.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & ChairmanYour guide to all of today’s races 14-42
PAGES 14-16
1st Race 1.50pm
The John Guest Racing British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes
Today’s opener is a six furlong Novice Stakes, restricted to two-year-old fillies which are E.B F. eligible, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Each runner is allocated 9st 2lbs before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
PAGES 18-20
2nd Race 2.25pm
The John Guest Racing
Brown Jack Handicap Stakes
This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 24-26
3rd Race 3.00pm
The Chapel Down Handicap Stakes
This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75.
PAGES 30-32
4th Race 3.35pm
The John Guest Racing Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
PAGES 36-38
5th Race 4.10pm
The Slingsby Gin Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
PAGES 40-42
6th Race 4.45pm
The Berenberg October Club Supporting Schoolreaders Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
The final race today is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

As we look ahead to the rest of the Flat season National Racehorse Week (NRW) is quickly coming into view. Initially the brainchild of trainer Richard Phillips, NRW celebrates the thoroughbred and opens up the behind-thescenes elements of horse racing the public otherwise would not see.
This year NRW runs from the 9th-17th September and includes yards from across the country, from Scotland to Devon, Newmarket to Nottinghamshire. It also involves retraining centres, ex-racehorses visiting care homes and other Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) activities.
The week will also incorporate seven Racing to School days, kindly hosted by Daniel and Claire Kubler, Mark Pattinson, Rebecca Menzies, James Moffatt, Donald McCain and Hugo Palmer. Racing Together supports NRW and there are groups visiting yards from initiatives such as Tickets4Troops, MIND and Blue Light Ticketing.
Last year featured 138 separate events with over 100 yards, eight studs and seven aftercare, retraining & rehoming centres taking part. This year there are over 15,000 spaces at public open day events during National Racehorse Week, with 185 public open day events and over 50 community events taking place.
The week will showcase the love, care and attention that these magnificent animals receive on a daily basis, provide an opportunity for racing to engage with its local communities as well as open out the sport to those who have never previously experienced it. Who knows, for someone it may be the lightbulb moment that sparks a lifetime love of horse racing.

HHHH Notably strong traveller who has won five of her 25 handicap runs and finished second in a further 11; 3lb rise for her latest Windsor win (beat Woolhampton, despite idling and hanging left in the closing stages); very best form has come on fast ground but she is effective on good to soft; has more races in her and she should make a bold bid to improve on her second to Cuban Breeze in this race last year

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £ 2,676,727 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from May to August 2023.
