Welcome to the September Racing Weekend, our two-day meeting as we head into the closing stages of the 2023 Flat season.

Today’s seven-race card starts with three two-year-old races that could throw up potential stars of the future. On this day last year, Paddington made his racecourse debut in the Charbonnel et Walker British EBF Maiden Stakes He only finished fifth but has since gone on to become the leading three-year-old of his generation with victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown and the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

We will be on the lookout for another potential star today and our thanks goes to Charbonnel et Walker who once again sponsor that race as well as the British EBF, Palmer & Co Champagne, Sodexo Live! and LK Bennett for their support.

LK Bennett, our Official Womenswear Sponsor, provides backing to the Lady Amateur Jockeys Handicap Stakes which we are delighted to see feature on the September Racing Weekend for the first time. Some of the best riders from the amateur ranks will be in action.

Today marks the first anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, whose love of racing has been commemorated all summer through a Getty-curated exhibition of photographs presented by Howden in the Grandstand. This weekend is the last opportunity to view the physical exhibition, but we are delighted to be launching an interactive digital version of the gallery today, which will be available for all to view online until December. Simply scan the QR code on page 10 to explore this unique collection of images

We hope to welcome you back tomorrow for the second day of the September Racing Weekend, where the Lavazza Handicap Stakes is our feature race. Recent winners include Chalk Stream in 2021 who was the last winner at Ascot for Queen Elizabeth II as an owner.

Yours sincerely,

The Events At Ascot Christmas Parties

British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes

This six furlong Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

PAGES 20-22

2nd Race 2.25pm

The Charbonnel et Walker

British EBF Maiden Stakes

This race is a seven furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes

This one mile Novice Stakes is another restricted to two-year-olds This race holds the same conditions as the first race of today’s meeting, but is for fillies only.

PAGES 28-30

4th Race 3.35pm

The LK Bennett

Lady Amateur Jockeys Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

PAGES 32-33

5th Race 4.10pm

The Bet With Ascot Classified Stakes

This race is a seven furlong classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90 Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rivals

PAGES 36-37

6th Race 4.45pm

The Palmer & Co Champagne

Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

PAGES 40-42

7th Race 5.20pm

The Sodexo Live!

Handicap Stakes

This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

21. Weight (stones/pounds)

22. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo

If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RACE SUMMARY

The booking of Ryan Moore for the Clive Cox-trained newcomer Nemov catches the eye and any market confidence behind him would be significant. However, MISS INFORMATION has shown a decent level of form already and she shades the verdict. The daughter of Blue Point was beaten narrowly into third at Windsor a fortnight ago and this stiffer track should play to her strengths. Western hasn’t been seen since finishing fifth on debut over 5f here May, but he left the impression that he would benefit from this step up in trip on that occasion.

Racing Together Talks To Paul Dowers

Tickets4Troops provides free tickets to members of the armed forces for a number of music, cultural and sporting events The charity has an established relationship with the racing industry, something that is nurtured by Racing Together who run community events in partnership with Tickets4Troops

Evie Parker of Tickets4Troops said: ‘Tickets For Troops has enjoyed a fantastic partnership with Racing Together since the charity’s beginning. The relationship has enabled us to send thousands of service personnel and their loved ones on days out to enjoy one of the most thrilling sports the UK has to offer and we hope to continue to do so for a long time to come. ’

Lucy Gurney, Community Engagement Manager at Racing Together said: ‘British

racing is proud to work with Tickets4Troops to say thank you to serving and former members of the armed forces and their families Through this scheme racecourses have generously donated over 100,000 tickets during the past seven years. We’re delighted Paul had a brilliant day at Ascot and thank the racecourse, the Racecourse Association and of course Tickets4Troops for making experiences like this happen year-round.’

All 59 racecourses in Britain are signed up to the initiative and in the last five years Ascot has made over 1,900 tickets available through the scheme.

Paul Dowers, an Officer within the Royal Air Force, talks to Racing Together about his experience with Tickets4Troops at Ascot Racecourse.

What is your role in the armed forces?

Both my wife (Sophie Dowers) and I are Officers within the Royal Air Force. Sophie is a People Operations Officer and I work as a Logistics Officer Currently we are based at RAF High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.

When did you visit Ascot Racecourse and what was your experience there?

We came to Ascot in early May. We had a great day, though the weather did its best to dampen things! The experience was great. Sophie loves horses and we took this opportunity to introduce our daughter Felicity (five months at the time) to the races. Safe to say, she loved it. We were really welcomed by staff and everything was easy. We picked up tickets with no fuss and racecourse staff help us get around with a pushchair and made sure to make a fuss of Felicity.

How did you find out about Tickets4Troops?

T4T is something that I have used throughout my career from when I started out as a Senior Aircraftsmen (now known as an Air Specialist) to where I am now. It was introduced to me by a friend who was serving when I was working at RAF Wittering.

Had you been racing before?

I have been to some smaller racing events but was impressed by just how big Ascot is. The days we had been to before included racing at Sandown, Market Rasen and Southwell.

What other experiences have you had with Tickets4Troops?

We have been lucky and have been to see great artists perform, such as Ed Sheeran and Craig David. In addition, we have attended football games and other great days out in London. Latitude Festival weekend tickets were a highlight!

What does it mean for organisations to give back to the armed forces in this way?

You will see from my daughter’s face in the picture how much it meant for her, for us that is priceless Organisations giving back is huge for the Forces community, often we can’t plan when we will be off work, it’s hard to commit to big events with large costs in the fear of having to be away with work. It also makes you feel valued from outside your own organisation, which for us, is a nice feeling. As Officers we move location every two years, T4T is a good way for us to try new experiences that are closer to our temporary ‘home’.

RACE SUMMARY

This may be an informative event, but the obvious place to start is the Aidan O’Brien-trained KESTREL The son of Justify is out of mare who was Group 2-placed over 1m2f and it would be no surprise to see him go well on debut. There wasn’t much to separate Moyassr (third) and Ten Bob Tony (fourth) at Salisbury last month, where both gave the impression that this extra furlong would suit, while Olympic Candle and Accumulate also make the shortlist.

Finding A Cure

Imagine not being able to move, sleep, or smile. Feeling anxious or depressed and struggling to think or remember. Your body not feeling like your own. This is what Parkinson’s can feel like.

Your mum, son or friend. Anyone can get Parkinson’s, young or old. Every hour, two more people are diagnosed.

Parkinson’s is what happens when the brain cells that make dopamine start to die. There are over 40 symptoms, from tremor and pain, to anxiety. Some are treatable, but the drugs can have serious side effects. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet.

But we know we’re close to major breakthroughs.

Funding the right research into the most promising treatments, we get closer to a cure every day.

Until then, we’re here for everyone affected by Parkinson’s. Fighting for fair treatment and better services. Making everyone see its real impact.

We’re people with Parkinson’s, scientists and supporters, fundraisers and families, carers and clinicians, all working side by side. Impatient for change, we’re taking a stand, speaking out, chipping in, and playing our part.

We are Parkinson’s UK. Powered by people. Funded by you. Together we’ll find a cure.

Further information, advice and support is available on our website, www.parkinsons.org.uk or our free, confidential helpline on 0808 800 0303.

You can also make a cash or card donation here today - our volunteers will be based at each exit point.

SEAWARD sets a good standard based on her fourth-placed finish on debut at Newmarket last month and, as the only one in the contest with race experience, the Sea The Stars filly could prove too good for her rivals. RACE SUMMARY

ONE STEP BEYOND was a cosy winner over course and distance on his penultimate start and then followed that up when second at Windsor a fortnight ago With that in mind, the six-year-old looks sure to give another good account of himself Lenny’s Spirit should not be discounted in his bid for a hat-trick either, although his recent wins have been over further and that is a slight concern. Shaladar has gone close on his last two starts and is another to note

RACE SUMMARY

Tafreej posted a solid fourth in the Sky Bet Mile at York a fortnight ago and he is well treated at the weights. Though respected, a chance can be taken on SEA OF THIEVES. She wasn’t disgraced in the Group 3 Valiant Stakes here last time and Ed Walker’s filly is the least exposed, so might find further progress dropping in class. Saxon King, Out Of Shadows and Glenfinnan are others to note in what looks a fairly open heat.

RACE SUMMARY

MAJOR PARTNERSHIP found only a well-fancied stablemate too strong over C&D in July and a similar level of performance may suffice off just 1lb higher in the ratings. Aerion Power finished a fine fourth in the Royal Hunt Cup here in June and could give the selection most to think about with Ryan Moore now back on board. Ouzo offered more encouragement when beaten just over a length at Goodwood recently and shouldn’t be far away either.

RACE SUMMARY

The consistent Kimnkate looks sure to go well after her most recent second at Newmarket, as she has been raised just 2lb for that display. However, the vote goes to HARRY MAGNUS, who likes to be held up and he could have this race run to suit. In addition, he sports a first-time hood, which could eke out improvement, so he looks worth chancing under Jim Crowley. Any market support for Liberty on her handicap bow would be interesting.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.

The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.

Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade

from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.

The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
