Welcome to the final day of the September Racing Weekend. Today marks the start of National Racehorse Week, the annual celebration of the thoroughbred. This year it runs from 9th
17th September, offering everyone the opportunity to experience the first-hand love, care and attention that goes into looking after every racehorse, from foal to retirement.
On course today, we are delighted to welcome Side Glance, our very own Equine Ambassador, who you can meet on the Cedar Tree Lawn during racing. A dual winner at Ascot during his career, he is now helping us to develop important links in the community and on Wednesday he will be visiting South Ascot Village School and Signature Nursing Home as part of our National Racehorse Week activity.
Our final race is named in support of National Racehorse Week while the opening race is the RoR Horses For Courses British EBF Novice Stakes, promoting the Retraining of Racehorses’ programme that helps racecourses adopt horses like Side Glance as ambassadors.
We also extend a warm welcome and grateful thanks to sponsors bet365, the Victoria Racing Club, Fever-Tree and Lavazza for their continued support.
Yesterday marked the first anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, whose love of racing has been commemorated all summer through a Getty-curated exhibition of photographs presented by Howden in the Grandstand. Today is the last opportunity to view the physical exhibition, but we are delighted to be launching an interactive digital version of the gallery today, which will be available for all to view online until December. Simply scan the QR code on page 10 to explore this unique collection of images.
We next race on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th October for our Autumn Racing Weekend, featuring our annual beer festival. QIPCO British Champions Day is then the finale of the Flat season two weeks later We hope to see you then.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman06-07

The RoR Horses For Courses
British EBF Novice Stakes
This seven furlong Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
PAGES 20-22
2nd Race 2.35pm
The bet365 Handicap Stakes
This race is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.
PAGES 28-30
3rd Race 3.10pm
The Lavazza Handicap Stakes
(Heritage Handicap)
This race is a one mile, three furlong and 211 yards handicap race for three-year-olds Just like the previous race, it has no rating restrictions attached to it but this still impacts the higher rated horses as they concede weight to their lower rated rivals, so excpect this race to be very competitive too!
PAGES 42-43
4th Race 3.45pm
The Victoria Racing Club
“Confined” Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and two furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95 and have not won more than one race this year To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90
PAGES 48-50
5th Race 4.20pm
The Royal Ascot Racing Club 25th Anniversary British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 52-54
6th Race 4.55pm
The Fever-Tree Handicap Stakes
This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 79 to 98 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
PAGES 56-58
7th Race 5.30pm
The National Racehorse Week Handicap Stakes
This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 79 to 98 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

In early 2023, Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), launched an exciting new initiative to showcase the care given and opportunities open to former racehorses once their racing days come to an end.
The programme invites racecourses to adopt an equine ambassador who they will invite to attend racedays and provide updates to racegoers in relation to their second career activities
So far more than ten racecourses have signed up, helping to convey positive messages about the high standard of aftercare in British racing to racegoers and beyond to the wider public.
As part of the programme, Ascot Racecourse appointed Side Glance as the Ascot Racecourse Supports Equine Ambassador. A former top-level winning racehorse owned by Sheikh Fahad and trained by Andrew Balding, he now forms a central part of the Ascot Racecourse Supports programme to engage people in the sport of horse racing.
Since retiring, he has been enjoying a new career based with Leanne White and even played a starring role in her wedding. As well as meeting racegoers, groups of school children and other community groups, he also played a central role in the 2023 Royal Ascot marketing campaign.
Side Glance and Leanne are both with us today, parading before racing at 1.00pm and then based on the Cedar Tree Lawn from 1.15pm onwards – please do go and say hello!

GHOSTWRITER made the best possible start to his career at Newmarket and this looks a good opportunity to follow up that success. Clive Cox’s colt won by more than three lengths and even better is anticipated now he has experience on his side. The beautifully-bred Spun To Gold is feared most after showing his inexperience but still managing to make the frame on his Kempton debut, while American Bay made subsequent York sales race winner Dragon Leader pull out all the stops at Salisbury.

Love De Vega arrives in search of a hat-trick and he has to be considered off 6lb higher than his latest success at Musselburgh. However, preference is for SPANGLED MAC, who took a big step forward in first-time cheekpieces to go in by just over a length at Newbury and he could repeat that feat off only a 3lb higher rating. Star Of Orion and Quinault have both had good seasons and also merit consideration.

Tickets4Troops provides free tickets to members of the armed forces for a number of music, cultural and sporting events The charity has an established relationship with the racing industry, something that is nurtured by Racing Together who run community events in partnership with Tickets4Troops
Evie Parker of Tickets4Troops said: ‘Tickets For Troops has enjoyed a fantastic partnership with Racing Together since the charity’s beginning. The relationship has enabled us to send thousands of service personnel and their loved ones on days out to enjoy one of the most thrilling sports the UK has to offer and we hope to continue to do so for a long time to come. ’
Lucy Gurney, Community Engagement Manager at Racing Together said: ‘British
racing is proud to work with Tickets4Troops to say thank you to serving and former members of the armed forces and their families Through this scheme racecourses have generously donated over 100,000 tickets during the past seven years. We’re delighted Paul had a brilliant day at Ascot and thank the racecourse, the Racecourse Association and of course Tickets4Troops for making experiences like this happen year-round.’
All 59 racecourses in Britain are signed up to the initiative and in the last five years Ascot has made over 1,900 tickets available through the scheme.
Paul Dowers, an Officer within the Royal Air Force, talks to Racing Together about his experience with Tickets4Troops at Ascot Racecourse.
What is your role in the armed forces?
Both my wife (Sophie Dowers) and I are Officers within the Royal Air Force. Sophie is a People Operations Officer and I work as a Logistics Officer Currently we are based at RAF High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.
When did you visit Ascot Racecourse and what was your experience there?
We came to Ascot in early May. We had a great day, though the weather did its best to dampen things! The experience was great. Sophie loves horses and we took this opportunity to introduce our daughter Felicity (five months at the time) to the races. Safe to say, she loved it. We were really welcomed by staff and everything was easy. We picked up tickets with no fuss and racecourse staff help us get around with a pushchair and made sure to make a fuss of Felicity.
How did you find out about Tickets4Troops?
T4T is something that I have used throughout my career from when I started out as a Senior Aircraftsmen (now known as an Air Specialist) to where I am now. It was introduced to me by a friend who was serving when I was working at RAF Wittering.
Had you been racing before?
I have been to some smaller racing events but was impressed by just how big Ascot is. The days we had been to before included racing at Sandown, Market Rasen and Southwell.
What other experiences have you had with Tickets4Troops?
We have been lucky and have been to see great artists perform, such as Ed Sheeran and Craig David. In addition, we have attended football games and other great days out in London. Latitude Festival weekend tickets were a highlight!
What does it mean for organisations to give back to the armed forces in this way?
You will see from my daughter’s face in the picture how much it meant for her, for us that is priceless Organisations giving back is huge for the Forces community, often we can’t plan when we will be off work, it’s hard to commit to big events with large costs in the fear of having to be away with work. It also makes you feel valued from outside your own organisation, which for us, is a nice feeling. As Officers we move location every two years, T4T is a good way for us to try new experiences that are closer to our temporary ‘home’.

6-5 Shaquille (GB), 11-1 Mill Stream (IRE), 12-1 Sacred (GB), 14-1 Spycatcher (IRE), 16-1 Run To Freedom (GB), 18-1 Saint Lawrence (IRE), Lezoo (GB), 22-1 Regional (GB), Believing (IRE), 33-1 Swingalong (IRE), 40-1 Garrus (IRE), Khaadem (IRE), 66-1 Rohaan (IRE), Shouldvebeenaring (GB), 80-1 The Antarctic (IRE), 150-1 Annaf (IRE), 200-1 Rumstar (GB), 500-1 Happy Romance (IRE)
SHAQUILLE has been scintillating to watch this year and he has recorded his Group 1 successes in taking fashion after missing the break on both occasions. The son of Charm Spirit is still improving and if he can behave himself a bit better in the stalls, he will prove very tough to beat once more. Spycatcher had Saint Lawrence (third) and Rohaan (seventh) behind when only beaten by a short head in the Prix Maurice de Gheest and he needs considering as he continues to progress.

2-1 Botanical (IRE), 7-2 Mantoog (GB), 9-2 Jeff Koons (IRE), 11-2 Elegancia (GB), 9-1 Blueflagflyinghigh (IRE), 14-1 New Dayrell (GB)
MANTOOG justified strong support in the market when gaining a breakthrough success on her handicap bow at Salisbury last month and won with enough in hand to suggest that she can defy a 7lb rise. Botanical has done little wrong in three appearances and Roger Varian’s gelding is an obvious threat on his handicap bow. Last-time-out novice winner Elegancia could also have more to offer and completes the shortlist.

BRIDESTONES has always shaped as though she is a filly capable of better, and recent efforts in Listed company suggest she is well up to scoring at this level. The daughter of Teofilo was unlucky when not getting a clear run over C&D in the Sandringham, and she is taken to get the better of Leicester scorer Prepense. Placed in the Kensington Palace here on her penultimate start, Tarrabb must enter calculations along with Amanzoe and Farhh To Shy.

A very competitive heat sees a chance taken on CALL ME GINGER, who showed a likeable attitude when getting up on the line over an extended 5f at Chester last week. Jim Goldie’s charge has been raised 4lb for that short-head success, but Amie Waugh’s 5lb claim can help to carry that burden. The consistent Spring Bloom should also be thereabouts after a decent second over 5f at Sandown last time, while Dynamic Force is an interesting contender on his return to the UK.
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £1,400,093 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from September to December 2023.
