Welcome to the first day of our traditional Autumn Racing Weekend & Beer Festival.
Our racing highlight today is the Troy Asset Management Noel Murless Stakes, a Listed contest over 1 mile and 6 furlongs with a roll of honour that includes Gold Cup winner Big Orange. The race sometimes attracts horses that have run in the St Leger at Doncaster and that is the case today with Chesspiece and Middle Earth in the field.
Our thanks go to Troy Asset Management for sponsoring our feature event on the card, as well as Inline Policy Ltd who are celebrating their 10th anniversary
We are delighted to be staging the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards at Ascot next February. We are formally partnering with the BHA, the Racing Post and Racing TV to support the event, alongside the principal sponsor, Godolphin. Our opening race today signals the chance to make nominations for the award, which closes on November 7th.
We are also delighted to welcome beneficiaries from Racing Welfare, and the charity HEROS, both important organisations which will have races run in their names today in recognition of their contribution to the racing industry.
Off the track we invite you to enjoy one of the largest beer festivals in the South East as we showcase over 160 different lagers, real ales, ciders and perries, all of which are available over the two days of our race meeting.
We look forward to welcoming you back tomorrow and also for the conclusion of our Flat season, QIPCO British Champions Day, when Frankie Dettori will have the final rides of his illustrious career in Britain.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & ChairmanYour guide to all of today’s races 18-49
PAGES 18-20
1st Race 2.12pm
The Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Stakes
This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 This specific handicap is also limited to amateur jockeys
Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
PAGES 24-26
2nd Race 2.47pm
The HEROS Novice Stakes (GBB Race)
This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs There are a variety of reasons why the horses in this contest are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances in their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
PAGES 30-32
3rd Race 3.22pm
The Racing Welfare Classified Stakes
This race is a one-mile classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90 Unlike a handicap when a horse’s rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rivals
PAGES 36-37
4th Race 3.57pm
The Troy Asset Management
Noel Murless Stakes (Listed Race)
This one mile and six furlong contest for three-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 1lb for colts and geldings and 8st 10lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success.
PAGES 42-43
5th Race 4.30pm
The Inline Policy Ltd 10th Anniversary Handicap Stakes
This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 46-49
6th Race 5.05pm
The Ascot Iron Stand Membership Handicap Stakes
This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 105 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
A schoolteacher said of their day at Ascot: “It was a very enriching experience, providing children with hands on experiences and opportunities The children learnt so much from the knowledgeable experts. HEROS Charity was founded by Grace Muir and was granted charitable status in 2006. Since then, the charity has gained recognition and success for the retraining, rehabilitation, and rehoming of racehorses. HEROS is proud and committed to provide support of the highest standards to former racehorses, promoting welfare and creating bright futures and second chances to these magnificent animals.
HEROS works in partnership with the racing industry and its champions; the charity has developed and expanded its knowledge and expertise to support the horses that give so much pleasure to so many people. In 2022 they became the official aftercare partner to racing, meaning they are recognised as a centre of excellence for retraining and rehoming and are working in partnership with Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) to scale up the transition for horses in their first step out of racing and other aftercare programmes
Every year about 2,000 racehorses leave racing for a variety of reasons including injury, age, and limited success. But retirement from racing does not mean the end for these horses, they are so incredibly versatile, and their natural curiosity and interest in humans means they are extremely retrainable.
In 2015 with a grant from The Racing Foundation HEROS diversified. Recognising the ability of the thoroughbred to communicate and harnessing their natural inquisitive nature, they began offering opportunities to young people in the local area who were not thriving at school to come and spend time with their horses This has developed quickly and they now have an education department, offering programmes to SEN students as an Alternative Provision to mainstream education. This area continues to grow and develop and in October 2023, HEROS launched their Forest School as the demand and need continues to increase.
Today we are delighted to welcome Grace alongside members of her team and have named our 14.47 race “The HEROS Novice Stakes” in recognition of the charity’s work. HEROS are also our nominated bucket collectors, so please donate if you are able. To find out more visit: heroscharity.org

Our support is available to everyone currently working in or retired from British horse racing and the Thoroughbred breeding industries We help people thrive in their day-to-day lives by providing information, advice and practical support for a range of life’s challenges
During 2022 we assisted more than 2,700 people, seeing demand for our services increase by yet another 14% on the previous year. Demand has been steadily increasing since 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic, and it shows no sign of slowing down as we continue to live through challenging times
Over the past year racing’s people have sought our support with their physical and mental health, careers advice, retirement and housing to name but a few, with financial assistance being particularly in demand as the ‘Cost of Living Crisis’ continues
As well as providing a holistic wellbeing support service, we organise several community events across the country with the aim of preventing loneliness and social isolation within racing’s communities. Events can be anything from a rounders and barbecue evening for working age staff, retired staff coffee mornings, quiz nights or outings to the races. We are grateful to Ascot for supporting such events and for hosting a group of retired beneficiaries at today’s fixture. These events have a profound effect on racing’s people, who might not otherwise see many people during a normal week or month.
To continue to offer these vital services to racing’s people, Racing Welfare needs to raise more than £3million each year. Without the generosity of our supporters, we would struggle to get there.
For more information about Racing Welfare and to find out how you can support our work visit racingwelfare.co.uk or scan the QR code.
Recent Beneficiaries
Racing Welfare recently helped Louisa access physiotherapy. Without people like Louisa, who are so passionate about our sport, a day at the races simply would not happen.
“I can safely say that without the physiotherapy Racing Welfare provided the pain would have been unbearable and I’d have not been able to continue working in a racing yard at all. I’m not exaggerating when I say that my everyday life is genuinely so much more enjoyable now!”
- Louisa, head person for Jim Boyle
Today, Ascot Racecourse welcomes beneficiaries from Racing Welfare, the horse racing industry’s primary human welfare charity. In recognition of the Charity’s work the 15.22 race has been named “The Racing Welfare Classified Stakes” with attendees Pauline Ashworth, Andy Johnson and George Montgomery invited to present trophies to the winning connections.

DARK THIRTY had a few of these behind when third over this trip at Newmarket’s July Festival and has held his form well over 7f since, tasting success at the same venue. The son of Starspangledbanner could relish the return to this distance and is just preferred to C&D winner Lethal Nymph, who was runner-up at Doncaster over an extended 6f last month and is now only 1lb higher. King’s Lynn and Mitrosonfire are just a couple more to consider.
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £1,400,093 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from September to December 2023.
