Welcome to our penultimate fixture of the Flat season, the second day of our Autumn Racing Weekend & Beer Festival.
We extend our thanks and a warm welcome to long term partners Howden, who sponsor the country’s richest 7 furlong handicap; the £180,000 Howden Challenge Cup
We also stage two Group 3 races today; the Jim Barry Cumberland Lodge Stakes and the John Guest Racing Bengough Stakes.
Both races boast a rich history, most notably the Cumberland Lodge Stakes which was won by Champion Stakes hero Nayef in 2001 and, twenty years later in the same Shadwell silks, by this year’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Hukum.
Our thanks go to Jim Barry and John Guest Racing for sponsoring our two Pattern races, as well as to Blue Eagle and McGee Group for their support on the card.
Our final race of the day commemorates ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, whose volunteers we are delighted to welcome today.
Within the Grandstand selected televisions will be showing Wales V Georgia and England V Samoa from the Rugby World Cup in France, so you can enjoy all the high-class sport that this Saturday has to offer.
Our beer festival also continues today with over 160 different lagers, real ales, ciders and perries available.
We look forward to welcoming you back for QIPCO British Champions Day on Saturday 21st October, the climax of the British Flat Racing season and, of course, the date of Frankie Dettori’s final rides in Britain.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & ChairmanYour guide to all of today’s races 16-50
PAGES 16-18
1st Race 1.50pm
The Blue Eagle Rous Stakes (Listed Race)
This five furlong race is another at Listed level. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, colts and geldings are set to carry 9st and fillies’ 8st 9lb before any penalties are applied.
PAGES 20-21
2nd Race 2.25pm
The Jim Barry Cumberland Lodge Stakes (Group 3)
This one mile and four furlong race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.
PAGES 28-30
3rd Race 3.00pm
The John Guest Racing Bengough Stakes (Group 3)
Just like the previous contest, this is also a Group 3 race but over six furlongs. In a Group 3 race, runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things in the future.
PAGES 38-41
4th Race 3.35pm
The Howden Challenge Cup (Heritage Handicap)
This race is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races
PAGES 44-46
5th Race 4.10pm
The McGee Group British EBF October Stakes (Listed Race)
This seven furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Initially, the weights are set at 8st 12lb for three-year-olds and 9st for four-year-olds and upwards before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 1 or 2.
PAGES 48-50
6th Race 4.45pm
The ABF The Soldiers’ Charity Handicap Stakes
This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
world’s top-rated turf horse, who has made spectacular progress since his debut last June, most recently justifying short odds in the Lockinge at Newbury where he easily beat Real World and completed a Group 1 hat-trick (first two legs came in last year’s Moulin and here in the QEII); acts on good to firm and good to soft ground, still unbeaten (7-7) and has genuine claims to being the best miler since Frankel, with 1m2f aspirations for him also on the cards later on; looks set to produce another display of sheer class.

5-4 Al Aasy (IRE), 4-1 Israr (GB), 9-2 Al Qareem (IRE), 9-1 Postileo (IRE), 12-1 Claymore (FR), 16-1 L’Astronome (GB), 28-1 Fortino (CHI), 40-1 Euchen Glen (GB)
This looks a good opportunity for AL AASY to get back to winning ways The son of Sea
The Stars was a touch unlucky not to land a hat-trick of victories in the Paddy Power Stakes at Leopardstown last month and he can go one better on a track that suits. Israr’s best efforts put him very close to the selection meaning Shadwell hold a very strong hand, while Al Qareem bounced right back to his best at Chester last time and won’t go down without a fight.

Commanche Falls is in marvellous form at the moment and his victory over Juan Les Pins in the Garrowby at York gives him an obvious chance in this, as that made it three wins out of his last four starts. However, a chance can be taken on the improving sprinter DARK TROOPER, who is unbeaten in his last four outings and has recorded two C&D successes to his name within those efforts. The son of Dark Angel could continue his rapid rise to strike. Garrus is more than capable at this level and also has to be considered.

INSPIRAL was back to her brilliant best when claiming a second Prix Jacques le Marois victory at Deauville That was a fourth Group 1 success for this daughter of Frankel, one of which came over C&D in the 2021 Fillies’ Mile, and she still has plenty more to offer. French raider Mqse De Sevigne is already a dual winner at the highest level so has to be feared, while last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Meditate also enters calculations after a more encouraging fourth in the Matron. The supplemented Heredia is the pick of the rest.

The ultra-consistent QUINAULT arrives here on the back of a willing success over C&D last time and a repeat of that effort would see him go close once again. Stuart Williams’ charge beat the reopposing Popmaster (second) by a neck on that occasion and that rival has subsequently franked the form by going one better over 7f at Newbury. Off 4lb better terms, the son of Oasis Dream can confirm that form, while the hat-trick seeking Baradar also appears likely to offer another bold bid

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

A case can be made for a few of these but arguably the one to beat is the highly-progressive NIGIRI, who put in a career best when second in a Group 3 at Doncaster. The daughter of Lope De Vega may have more improvement left to come and she could be hard to beat. Breege is a big threat following her fourth against the boys in a Listed race at Sandown, while Queen Aminatu and Cell Sa Beela are a couple of others to note

Today, we are delighted to welcome volunteers from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, the British Army’s National Charity which supports soldiers, veterans and their families for life. In the past year they have made grants amounting to £8.8m, supporting up to 70,000 individuals in 45 countries worldwide. Their support is truly ‘for life’ with the youngest beneficiary being just 3 months and the oldest, 103 years. To do their job, they make grants to a total of 75 different organisations and other charities to support the wider Army-family.
Ascot Racecourse has supported the Charity since 2010, initially on racedays and then from 2013 also at Royal Ascot, where the Charity links up with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund.
Ascot Racecourse Supports has donated over £140,000 to these three charities via contributions from the sale of certain food and beverage on the days where the charities have a presence.
In recognition of their work and our collaboration, we have named our 16.45 race “The ABF The Soldiers’ Charity Handicap Stakes” and have invited Will Tower, Regional Director for their South East region, to judge the best turned out horse and present trophies to winning connections.
The charity are our nominated bucket collectors today, so please donate if you are able.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £1,400,093 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from September to December 2023.
