CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to our first Jumps meeting of the 2023/24 season, the Fireworks Spectacular Family Raceday. This is always an exciting day with competitive jumping action on the track followed by one of the region’s largest fireworks displays which we host in association with the Ascot Round Table. We are delighted to be offering more than £300,000 in prize money across the card to kickstart the new season. In total at our eight racedays in 2023/24 there will be £2.3 million available and we look forward to some high-class action throughout the winter. Today, the Sodexo Live! Gold Cup is the feature race which has a strong roll of honour and often produces a Grand National contender, including last year’s winner Our Power who went on to win again at Kempton before running at Aintree. Gary Moore is the leading trainer in the history of the race having saddled three winners in the last seven renewals so it will be worth keeping an eye on his runners Larry, who won the race in 2021, and Zhiguli. Our grateful thanks go to all of our sponsors for their support including Grundon Waste Management, Ascot Underwriting, GL events, Byrne Group, Seat Unique, Sodexo Live! and Molton Brown. Away from the track we have fairground rides and a UV disco to enjoy throughout the day before we end in spectacular fashion with a pyro-musical show featuring over 20,000 fireworks from the centre of the racecourse. It was fantastic to see Champion Flat Jockey William Buick appointed as an ambassador for Autism in Racing recently and as part of our family offering today, we have the Autism in Racing sensory space available again with 30 pre-booked families set to make use of the facility. We hope you enjoy all that is on offer and look forward to welcoming you back for our next fixture at the end of the month, the November Racing Weekend. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

PAG E S 1 6 - 1 8

PAG E S 4 0 - 4 2

1st Race 12.55pm The Grundon Waste Management Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

5th Race 3.15pm The Seat Unique Handicap Hurdle

Our opener is a handicap hurdle for novice three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Today’s trip is just over two miles and three furlongs. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAG E S 2 0 - 2 2

2nd Race 1.30pm The Ascot Underwriting Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase

This is a two mile and three furlong handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make these handicaps very competitive races. PAG E S 2 6 - 2 8

3rd Race 2.05pm The Byrne Group Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)

The first of our premier handicap steeple chases, this specific race is for four-year-olds and upwards to be run over an extended two miles. Like our previous races, this race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part.

This is a two mile handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards. This contest is similar to our previous race however it is for seasoned handicappers as opposed to novices’. Horses are allocated a weight dependant on their ratings. PAG E S 4 4 - 4 6

6th Race 3.45pm The Sodexo Live! Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)

The second of our premier handicap steeple chases, this specific race is for four-year-olds and upwards to be run just under three miles. Our feature race of the day also has no rating restriction and has attracted a field of 13 runners. If any one of them had won a race after the 28th October they would be required to carry a penalty however none have and as such all will be carrying a weight dependant on their rating. PAG E S 4 8 - 5 0

7th Race 4.15pm The Molton Brown Open National Hunt Flat Race

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race, or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred to, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutants or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat or in hurdle races or steeple chases (except for point-to-points), they are unable to enter. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four & five and will be run over two miles.

PAG E S 3 4 - 3 6

4th Race 2.40pm The GL events Novices’ Hurdle

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular two-mile and half a furlong novices’ hurdle is for horses aged four and upwards.

21. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

OVER FOUR DECADES OF FIREWORK FUNDRAISING

Ascot Round Table is a community organisation of loyal, committed and connected volunteers who come together to support local communities and charities. The Round Table’s journey with the fireworks event spans over four decades nearly 42 years has passed since it ran its first show to a few hundred people in the field next to Ascot train station. Over the years it has moved from site to site, even jumping into Ascot United Football Club’s fields at one stage. As the number of people attending continued to grow, the charity knew it needed to find a true long-term home. So, in 2008 it excitedly agreed to bring the fireworks event to Ascot Racecourse and hasn’t looked back! A new location was just one piece of the puzzle and ensuring it put on a spectacular light show was critical. A lot has been learnt over the years, including an awkward moment one year when it let all the fireworks off at once! The turning point was when it partnered with Bracknell locals, Star Fireworks, who completely transformed the display into the award-winning show it is today. Beyond the excitement, the fireworks event is a key part of the Round Table’s fundraising. Your ticket is a donation that enables it to support a number of local charities and groups such as Sebastian’s Action Trust, Ascot Drop-in Centre, Sunningdale Scouts, Sunninghill’s food4children and many more. Fundraising for local charities is the DNA of the Round Table. Its community fundraising encompasses everything from beer festivals, fireworks and Santa sleighs, to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and 10k fun runs.

FIREWORKS

Across the country Round Table clubs raise over £4 million a year for local communities and good causes, whilst volunteering more than 160,000 hours. In total, there are over 3,000 members across 300 clubs in the UK with an international network of 30,000 members in 60 countries worldwide Of course, there is no work without play and members regularly get together. Round Table nights can vary with activities such as white-water rafting, hiking, zorbing, crazy golf, learning how to make the perfect sushi or taking a tour of the local brewery. The shared camaraderie brings members together and life-long friendships are formed. If being a key part of a like-minded group supporting the community excites you, then visit: Ascotroundtable.com and do something different!

1 RACE SUMMARY

An open event in which plenty will fancy their chances, so only a tentative vote can go to AWAYTHELAD. He was beaten only four lengths by the now 133-rated Crambo over C&D last November, but was unable to go on thereafter. Ben Pauling’s charge looks extremely well treated on that performance, though, and it would be no surprise to see him take a step forward today. Others to note include Immortal, Ed Keeper and Idem.

RACE SUMMARY

ARE U WISE TO THAT got off the mark at the first time of asking over fences on his latest outing over 2m4f at Warwick in September and he can put that chase experience to good use. Jonjo O’Neill’s charge was going away at the line on that occasion and a 7lb rise doesn’t appear out of his reach. Hermino Aa was improving nicely when last seen winning over hurdles at Warwick in March and he isn’t ruled out of continuing that progression over the larger obstacles, while Jipcot can be seen to better effect.

RACE SUMMARY

Boothill landed a valuable handicap over C&D on just his second start over fences in November last year and followed that up by taking the Wayward Lad at Kempton over Christmas. The eight-year-old returns on a mark that he is likely to be competitive off, but a chance is taken on FRERE D’ARMES. His early-season form last year was especially strong, beating Haddex Des Obeaux at Kempton before winning a Newbury contest that worked out well, and he had excuses when returning after an injury in the spring. Saint Segal, Red Rookie and the veteran First Flow are others likely to enter the reckoning.

RACING TOGETHER WEBINARS The latest series of Racing Together webinars returned last week. These popular, free online events focus on a range of topics discussed by a panel of thought leaders in their respective fields, both from inside and outside the racing industry. The most recent webinar unpacked ‘The transformational impact of sport on mental and physical health’ and was hosted by former jockey now TV broadcaster Leonna Mayor who was joined by Aimee Hockley– Righton (Racing Welfare); Sam Perks (Mind Charity); Page Fuller (former jump jockey) and Adam Whitehead (ex-professional swimmer and now working for the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust). A recording and podcast of the 45-minute webinar can be found at: racingtogether.co.uk/resources/webinars Racing Together’s Community Engagement Manager, Lucy Gurney said: “We were delighted to launch our third series of webinars with such an important and

fascinating topic, focusing on sport’s enduring potential to transform physical and mental health – both for participants and spectators at all life stages. “A huge thank you goes to our brilliant host and panelists for giving such an honest insight into their experiences, and to our viewers for their participation and interaction.” The panel discussed elite professional sport in general, both the positive and negative impact, as well as identifying issues specific to the racing industry. The work and resources offered by racing were highlighted as being available to the wider community, not just those who work within the industry. The next episode will address A shared challenge: innovations in education and employment and will be hosted at the earlier time of 11am on Thursday, 16th November. All previous webinar episodes are available on the Racing Together website as well as all sign up details for future instalments.

RACE SUMMARY

Soldierofthestorm sets the standard following his decisive victory at Warwick in May, but he may struggle to give 6lb to TELLHERTHENAME. Ben Pauling’s gelding won in impressive fashion on his sole start between the flags and he merits the utmost respect having been purchased for 200,000 pounds subsequently. Jango Baie has a similar profile to the selection and may prove to be next best, although Ten Lengths Tom and Brook Bay should not be discounted.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses. For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. Vets generally find fewer superficial injuries with horses running over padded hurdles compared to the traditional birch hurdle.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

RACE SUMMARY

OUR CHAMP made quite the impression when bounding clear of his rivals at Cheltenham recently, and an 11lb rise for that success may not be enough to halt his rapid progression, with Freddie Gordon taking off a valuable 5lb. Teddy Blue unseated the rider early in that contest, but better can be expected here from the Betfair Hurdle third, while the unexposed Altobelli is another with plenty of potential dropping in class. County Hurdle winner Faivoir is entitled to build his recent return at Ffos Las and can have a say, along with stablemate Knickerbockerglory and Chance A Tune.

RACE SUMMARY

A good race featuring a cast of progressive young staying chasers, headed by Monbeg Genius. Given that Jonjo O’Neill’s gelding needed last year’s reappearance, he may be worth passing over on this occasion in favour of the more experienced TWO FOR GOLD, a mud-lover who has been readied to win fresh before and whose Ascot (chasing) form figures read ‘221’. Mucho Mas is another improving sort who should make his presence felt if fully tuned up, while Irish raider Yeah Man could throw up some each-way value.

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.

HBLB The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £1,400,093 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from September to December 2023.
