2024 RACEDAYS

NOW ON SALE A PLAYGROUND FOR THE ELEGANT, THE EXUBERANT AND THE EXTRAORDINARY, THERE’S AN OCCASION AT ASCOT FOR ALL TO ENJOY. BE PART OF IT.

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the second day of the November Racing Weekend as we host our first graded races of the 2023/24 Jumps season. The racing is headlined by a brace of Grade 2 contests in the shape of the Coral Hurdle and the Nirvana Spa 1965 Chase. The latter celebrates the first year that Jumps racing was introduced at Ascot and has been won by the likes of Cyrname, Vautour and Master Minded in recent renewals. This year, sponsored for the first time by Nirvana Spa, it will be brilliant to see multiple-Grade 1 champion Shishkin return to action ahead of a tilt at the King George. The Coral Hurdle also has a strong field, including last year’s winner Goshen, and we extend a warm welcome to Coral whose sponsorship of this Grade 2, registered as the Ascot Hurdle, stretches all the way back to 2006. In that time we have seen some greats of the sport win the race including Hardy Eustace, Annie Power, Faugheen and Rock On Ruby. We are extremely grateful for the support of today’s raceday sponsors, Coral, Restorations UK, Jim Barry Wines and Nirvana Spa. They help us to provide more than £364,000 in prize money across the card. The first race promotes our Bet With Ascot Donation Box Scheme and before racing we will be presenting a cheque for £1,000 to Headway Thames Valley, the most popular charity as chosen by racegoers during the 2023 Flat season. Off the track, we will be showcasing various other elements of the sport including the joys of racehorse ownership through the Racecourse Ownership Day series run by Great British Racing. Before racing, a parade of horses with shares available to purchase will take place and throughout the day Aly Vance will be interviewing syndicate managers, trainers and racing personalities on Ascot TV so they can share their knowledge and experience of shared ownership. It promises to be an enjoyable day on and off the track. Our next meeting is the two-day Howden Christmas Racing Weekend featuring the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle. We hope to see you back at Ascot then. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

PAG E S 1 6 - 1 7

PAG E S 3 8 - 3 9

1st Race 12.20pm The Royal Ascot Racing Club Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase

5th Race 2.40pm The Restorations UK Mares’ Handicap Hurdle

PAG E S 2 0 - 2 1

PAG E S 4 6 - 47

Our second race is a limited handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and there is no rating restrictions. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

2nd Race 12.55pm The Bet With Ascot Donation Box Scheme Novices’ Hurdle

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season which is towards the end of April. However, for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile, five and a half furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races. PAG E S 2 4 - 2 5

3rd Race 1.30pm The Nirvana Spa 1965 Steeple Chase (Grade 2)

The first of our two Grade 2 contests today, these races are high class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up. Initially, the weights in this two mile and five furlong steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success.

This race is restricted to fillies and mares aged four and above, which have been rated from 0 to 130. It will be run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125.

6th Race 3.15pm The Jim Barry Wines Hurst Park Handicap Steeple Chase

Our penultimate race is a handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards, run over two miles and one furlong. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, but like our second race, this has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAG E S 5 0 - 51

7th Race 3.50pm The Nirvana Spa Open National Hunt Flat Race

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged fourand five and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs.

PAG E S 2 8 - 2 9

4th Race 2.05pm The Coral Hurdle (Registered as The Ascot Hurdle) (Grade 2)

Like the previous contest, this is another Grade 2 event, although this one is a hurdle race to be run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs. The penalty structure remains the same, but there would be no allowances for any four-year-olds taking part.

21. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

1 RACE SUMMARY

There was plenty to like about CHIANTI CLASSICO’s first attempt over fences at Chepstow when jumping with real enthusiasm before staying on strongly to win in fine style. The manner of victory suggested the 8lb rise was more than warranted for Kim Bailey’s gelding and this appears to be a fine opportunity for him to take another step up the ladder. Scrum Diddly, twice a winner over hurdles last season, appears the most likely to chase home the selection, with Llandinabo Lad needing a step up in trip to make a difference.

BWAAAAA CHARITY WINNERS Today, we are pleased to announce the Flat season winners of our Bet with Ascot (BWA) donation box scheme. This initiative asks customers to deposit their losing betting slips into one of our charity boxes, supporting a nominated equine or local charity, in return for the chance of winning a hospitality prize. Headway Thames Valley were the winners for the 2023 Flat season and today will be presented with a cheque for £1,000. Our equine charity, Greatwood, will receive a £500 donation as the worthy runner-up. The nominated charities for our 2023/24 Jumps season are equine charity, Heros and local charity, Berkshire Vision. HEROS

BERKSHIRE VISION

HEROS charity was founded by Grace Muir and granted charitable status in 2006. Since then, the charity has gained recognition and success for the retraining, rehabilitation and rehoming of racehorses.

This Reading based charity has been supporting the visually impaired in Berkshire for over 120 years. It provides children, adults and their families with emotional and practical support following a sight loss diagnosis and makes sure they are accessing the services, resources, technology and benefits they are entitled to or need. It also ensures that they have someone to talk to if they are in shock or frightened, isolated or alone. By providing a wide range of social activities and adapted sports it helps to build confidence and independence while also improving mental and physical wellbeing.

HEROS works in partnership with the racing industry and its champions; the charity has developed and expanded its knowledge and expertise to support the horses that give so much pleasure to so many people. In 2022, it became the official aftercare partner to racing, meaning it is recognised as a centre of excellence for retraining and rehoming and is working in partnership with Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) to scale up the transition for horses in their first step out of racing and other aftercare programmes. Recognising the ability of the thoroughbred to communicate, and harnessing their natural inquisitive nature, in 2015 the charity began offering opportunities to young people in the local area, who were not thriving at school, to spend time with its horses. This programme has developed and the charity now has an education department, with programmes for SEN students as an alternative provision to mainstream education. In 2023, it launched a forest school as the demand and need continued to increase.

For adults of working age, it helps to develop confidence and skills to work and study and its Realeyes guides help people learn to safely navigate when out and above. In the 2022-23 financial year, the charity supported 1,025 members, welcomed its 100th child member and delivered over 75 children’s activities. It also ran numerous adult activities with 257 face to face and over 80 remote. To find out more, visit berkshirevision.org.uk

RACE SUMMARY

Nicky Henderson’s French recruit Excello and Leader In The Park - an expensive recruit from the pointing ranks for Ben Pauling - are two fascinating participants here, but a race-fit FARNOGE could take some stopping. Paul Nicholls’ bumper winner produced a professional performance to score on his hurdling debut at Newton Abbot recently and, with that experience to draw upon, a penalty may not be insurmountable with this stiffer test likely to play to his strengths.

3 RACE SUMMARY

SHISHKIN had no problem handling the step up to 3m1f when taking the Aintree Bowl on his most recent outing and that followed his second in the Ryanair at Cheltenham. The nine-year-old readily accounted for his main rival Pic D’Orhy when winning the Ascot Chase over C&D in February and it is hard to see that form being reversed here. Minella Drama and Straw Fan Jack both have plenty to find with the aforementioned pair but the former is the pick of the duo.

RACING CHARITIES’ GROUP Sport’s leading charities committed to supporting racing’s future strategy. A new Racing Charities’ Group has launched to grow and sustain combined efforts to support beneficiaries and the racing industry. This voluntary forum has been created to champion the wide spectrum of the sector’s investment in education, training, and community activity, including horse welfare. The Group is a partnership of charities seeking to share knowledge and to collaborate across areas of common interest, such as funding, regulation and strategy. National Horseracing College chief executive, Stephen Padgett said: “The Racing Charities’ Group has evolved out of a training programme underwritten by the Racing Foundation. The aim was to promote awareness among charity leaders of shared challenges and identify opportunities to bring influence advantageous to their beneficiary groups, as well as the racing industry.

2 6 R AC I N G C H A R I T I E S’ G R O U P

“The response has been very positive from colleagues who see the benefit in looking beyond the horizon of their own mission to find ways to combine knowledge and resources for wider benefit. There are various important issues on which the Group’s members can find consensus and use their experience and informed perspectives to aid the development of racing’s strategies. We believe that there is a strong mutual dependency within the industry to which this Group is committed.” The Racing Charities’ Group membership includes: the National Horseracing College; The British Racing School; the Scottish Racing Academy; The National Stud; Racing to School and Racing Together; Retraining of Racehorses; the Injured Jockeys Fund; JETS; The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and Racing Welfare.

RACE SUMMARY

Goshen won this race in blistering fashion 12 months ago and a repeat of that form would make him tough to beat today, but he can be very hard to predict, despite being the highest rated of these rivals. Therefore, the more solid proposition of THEATRE GLORY is fancied to reverse the form with Gary Moore’s runner after little separated the pair in the Grade 2 Select Hurdle over the extended 2m5f at Sandown in April. Nicky Henderson’s charge (third) might have gone closer than the selection (second) in that race had she benefitted from more luck in running and she has gone well fresh in the past. Blueking D’oroux could be up to this step up in class, while Sceau Royal isn’t ruled out if he can return to form.

The racing industry has launched a petition to Parliament calling on the Government to abandon the planned implementation of affordability checks for some people who want to place a bet. These proposed checks could have a negative impact on British horse racing’s finances if there is a reduction in betting turnover. RACE SUMMARY

CRAMBO looked a high-class prospect when taking the EBF Final last season and he confirmed his well-being when beating Santos Blue at Aintree last month. A 6lb rise for that latest success appears to be fair and the step up from 2m4f may bring about further progression from Fergal O’Brien’s six-year-old. Slate Lane is an obvious threat given his connections and a mark of 127 may still underestimate him, while Bold Endeavour and Goshhowposh are the pick of the remainder.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses. For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. Vets generally find fewer superficial injuries with horses running over padded hurdles compared to the traditional birch hurdle.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for every meeting to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

RACE SUMMARY

Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up BRAVEMANSGAME is taken to atone for the disappointment of his narrow defeat in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby on his return. Three weeks on from that run, Paul Nicholls’ King George winner can be expected to be ready to go again and he could be a different proposition with his match-fitness topped up. Royale Pagaille goes well fresh and has proven himself over these fences, but last year’s winner Protektorat looks the principal danger given he has undergone wind surgery since his fifth in the Gold Cup. Grand National hero Corach Rambler should run his race but faces a stiff task on these terms.

RACE SUMMARY

Boothill impressed when notching a second C&D win on his reappearance but he’s picked up a hefty 6lb rise for that and better value may lie with one of his younger victims, SAINT SEGAL, who was only six lengths back in third that day despite racing far keener than ideal on his first start for eight months. Corrigeen Rock still looked progressive when scoring at Kempton on his reappearance and should remain competitive despite a 7lb rise, as should Triple Trade, who shoulders a 5lb penalty for last week’s Cheltenham win.

RACE SUMMARY

WELLINGTON ARCH carries a penalty for his debut victory at Worcester last month but the form has worked out reasonably well, with the runner-up acquitting himself with credit in a Listed contest at Cheltenham last weekend, and he may put that experience to good use here. Regent’s Stroll and Tradecraft both make plenty of appeal for leading connections, while Shy Love, a half-brother to smart mare Brandy Love, completes the shortlist.

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.

HBLB The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £1,400,093 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from September to December 2023.
