CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the opening day of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend. Today’s six-race card is worth more than £140,000 in prize money and the feature race is the Grade 2 Howden Noel Novices’ Chase. Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls has won the race four times, including with future Grade 1 winners Pic D’Orhy, Politologue and Ptit Zig so it will be interesting to see if Kandoo Kid can follow in those illustrious footsteps for the Ditcheat team today. Simonsig won this race back in 2012 before going on to win the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival so there might be another future star on display this year. Off the track, there are fairground rides open to all ages as well as carol singing after racing to help you enjoy the festive atmosphere. Before racing we are delighted that the Pony Club will be presenting their annual awards to their racing series winners. Our congratulations go to Freddie Keighley, Eliza McPherson and India Rigg for winning their respective categories and we look forward to maybe one day welcoming them back to Ascot as future-stars of the weighing room. Our grateful thanks as ever go to Howden, one of our Official Partners at Ascot, who are the headline sponsor of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend and are supporting four races today. We are also thrilled to have WB Wealth and Thames Materials with us as race sponsors. The Link Visiting Scheme is our bucket collecting charity today. It provides a wonderful service to match elderly people with a friendly volunteer for long term regular visits, easing loneliness and creating friendships that transform lives. Please do give generously if you can. Tomorrow’s card features the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle as we sign off 2023 in style. We hope to see you then. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

1st Race 12.45pm The Howden Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

4th Race 2.30pm The WB Wealth Handicap Hurdle

Today’s opener is a two mile, five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAG E S 2 0 - 2 2

2nd Race 1.20pm The Howden Maiden Hurdle

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile, five and a half furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today. PAG E S 2 4 - 2 5

3rd Race 1.55pm The Howden Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. Although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season, they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile and one furlong novices’ handicap steeple chase is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.

Our fourth race is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. PAG E S 3 4 - 3 5

5th Race 3.05pm The Howden Noel Novices’ Steeple Chase (Grade 2)

This two mile, two and a half furlong steeple chase is a Grade 2 for novices’. It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards and initially, the weights are set according to sex with fillies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals, with the same rule applying to four-year-olds. Penalties are awarded dependant on previous steeplechase victories. PAG E S 3 8 - 4 0

6th Race 3.40pm The Thames Materials Open National Hunt Flat Race (Listed Race)

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race, or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four and five, and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs. As this is a Listed Race, expect some smart types to line up here and be useful hurdles/chasers in the future.

21. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

WELCOME FROM DAVID HOWDEN A very warm welcome to the second Howden Christmas Racing Weekend – two days of top-class Jumps racing, accompanied by an array of festive fun. As we approach the end of 2023, we can reflect on another extraordinary year, not only across the business at Howden, but also the hugely enjoyable times we have shared with colleagues and friends here at Ascot. For our business, it has been another year of significant progress and expansion across the group. Following a number of new business acquisitions, we welcomed, amongst others, A-Plan and Ascot Lark to the Howden family and united under our new logo with a fresh look and feel for Howden. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved and it would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of every one of our colleagues worldwide. Another significant step for us this year was becoming a Principal Partner of The British & Irish Lions, supporting both the men’s team and the development of the women’s game. The Lions, and Ascot, represent the best of British, so we think they’re a marvellous fit for us at Howden, a proudly British global insurance group. Our partnership with Ascot is also now supported by several other brilliant global racing partnerships, including the Victoria Racing Club in Melbourne, Australia and the Bahrain Turf Club, all of which have elevated our presence in the sport on a global scale. At the heart of our affiliation with Ascot is the Royal Meeting in June. This year it was a particular honour to have supported a photography exhibition with Getty Images here at Ascot celebrating, perhaps the most famous racegoer and owner of all time, Queen Elizabeth II’s love of racing. It would also be remiss of me not to reference the inimitable Frankie Dettori, who put on the most incredible display in his final year of riding in the UK. Racing immortality is already his and it has been a great privilege to watch him in action this year, particularly as he has been wearing the Howden logo as one of our ambassadors. We wish him all the best as he embarks on another exciting chapter of his life over in the US. And so, with that plethora of good news to celebrate over the past year, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and from all of us at Howden we look forward to seeing you again in the new year. Merry Christmas! David Howden CEO, Howden Group

1 RACE SUMMARY

It’s hard to rule many of these progressive types out, with the hat-trick seeking MAGIC SEVEN shading the verdict. The Jonjo O’Neil-trained gelding won with something in hand on both hurdle victories at Hereford last month and an opening mark of 124 may underestimate him. Rebel Intentions lost little in defeat when finishing third in a strong contest here in late November and the six-year-old is feared most, while handicap debutants Delgany Bobby Blue and Roger Pol can also figure.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses. For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. Vets generally find fewer superficial injuries with horses running over padded hurdles compared to the traditional birch hurdle.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for every meeting to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

RACE SUMMARY

WELCOM TO CARTRIES dropped a significant hint of more to come with a highly commendable second-placed finish over 2m3f on his rules/hurdles debut here last month and is likely to be a key player with a step forward expected today. Ideal Des Bordes was a well-held third in that race (Meetmeatthearch pulled up) but is likely to have benefited from that experience and should know more this time. Similar comments apply to Leader In The Park and Havock, who are both shortlisted as potential improvers.

However, the vote goes to HOMME PUBLIC, who was a two-length winner of a Grade 2 at Cheltenham last time. CELEBRATING SIDE GLANCE – OUR EQUINE AMBASSADOR For the first time ever Ascot Racecourse appointed an Equine Ambassador in 2023, with Side Glance joining the team to help us develop important links with the local community as part of the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) initiative Horses For Courses. Throughout 2023, Side Glance and his wonderful owner Leanne White have engaged with 450 people including racegoers, local school children and care home residents. As part of National Racehorse Week in September he showcased the life that racehorses live once they finish racing while earlier in the year he starred in the Royal Ascot marketing campaign.

Leanne and ‘Sidey’ were shortlisted for the RoR Community Impact Award which was just reward for all their hard work. Sadly, they didn’t make the final three but they are both winners in our eyes and we look forward to seeing Side Glance inspire and educate many more people in the community throughout 2024 and beyond.

RACE SUMMARY

In a race that may go to one of the less exposed runners, a chance is taken on PONCHO. Gary Moore’s gelding was a faller on his last two starts but he could bounce back in this company if sorting out his jumping. If he does put in a clear round, the five-year-old may prove too good for the lightly-raced Jagwar, who has a touch of class about him. Others who make the shortlist are Immortal, Toonagh Warrior and Bad.

5 RACE SUMMARY

DJELO takes a step up in grade following a brace of victories in handicap company at Aintree and Newbury. It was pleasing to see him back up his first success, having faced a lack of obstacles on that occasion, and this appears to be an excellent opportunity for him to continue his progression. Might I finished alone at Exeter when opening his account over the larger obstacles at the second attempt. He is likely to pose a solid threat, while Kandoo Kid appeared to need every yard of the trip to win at Newbury and he may find a test of this nature on the sharp side.

RACE SUMMARY

In a wide-open event, marginal preference is for CELTIC DINO, who created a big impression when justifying favouritism on his racecourse debut over C&D last month. With the benefit of that experience, Sam Thomas’ gelding could prove hard to beat once again. That said, Captain Bellamy also won well on his first outing and is an obvious threat to the selection, while Brechin Castle should not be discounted despite carrying a double penalty. Others to note are I Wont Back Down, Dunskay and Marvellous Mick.

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.

HBLB The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £1,400,093 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from September to December 2023.
