CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the second day of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend, our final meeting of 2023. This is our most valuable Jumps fixture of the season, with more than £460,000 in prize money on offer, and is headlined by the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle. First run in 1965, we have seen some of the very best staying hurdlers in history win the race including Baracouda, Reve De Sivola, Big Buck’s and Thistlecrack. Baracouda won the race four times between 2000 and 2004 and today Paisley Park bids to match that record-breaking feat. The popular eleven-year-old is joined in the field by Champ and between them they have won four of the last five renewals. Rising-stars West Balboa, Crambo and Blueking D’Oroux also line up in what promises to be a cracking contest. Our grateful thanks go to Howden, one of our Official Partners at Ascot, who sponsor the Long Walk Hurdle as well as being the headline sponsor of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend. We are also grateful for the ongoing support of Betfair who again sponsor the £150,000 Betfair Exchange Trophy. We have a huge amount of festive entertainment available for all ages away from the track. A Christmas parade will take place in the Parade Ring while fairground rides will be open all afternoon along with carol singing during and after racing. Father Christmas and Mrs Christmas will also be eagerly awaiting any last-minute Christmas wishes. We are thrilled to once again be working with Autism in Racing to provide a pre-booked sensory space for families to use and are delighted to welcome Thames Hospice who are the beneficiaries of our public online donation scheme this year and will receive a cheque for £14,770 today. Our opening race is the Ascot Racecourse Supports Schools Photography Competition Novices’ Handicap Hurdle which celebrates our inaugural Schools Photography Competition. Judged by Royal photographer, Millie Pilkington, the winning, second-place and highly commended entries are on display in the Grandstand for you to enjoy. The prizes will be presented in the Parade Ring prior to racing and some of those shortlisted will be shadowing our racecourse photographer, Megan Ridgewell, during racing today. Our first meeting of 2024 is the Clarence House Chase Raceday as we start the year in style. We hope to see you then. Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman WELCOME

1st Race 12.40pm The Ascot Racecourse Supports Schools Photography Competition Novices’ Handicap Hurdle
4th Race 2.25pm The Howden Long Walk Hurdle (Grade 1)
This is a two mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-old and upward novices, rated 0-120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAG E S 2 0 - 2 1
2nd Race 1.15pm The Howden Graduation Steeple Chase
A Graduation Chase is simply a race for horses that have yet to win more than twice over fences. This particular two mile and five furlong contest is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards. Initially, the weights are set according to age and sex before penalties are awarded to previous winners. Depending on the class of race won, these range from 4lb to 7lb. PAG E S 2 6 - 2 7
3rd Race 1.50pm The Howden Handicap Steeple Chase
This is a two mile, two and a half furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.
The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards to be run just over three miles. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premiership in football, quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 7lb although fillies and mares do receive a 7lb allowance. PAG E S 4 2 - 4 4
5th Race 3.00pm The Howden Silver Cup Handicap Steeple Chase (Premier Handicap)
This is a three mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAG E S 4 8 - 5 0
6th Race 3.35pm The Betfair Exchange Trophy (A Handicap Hurdle) (Premier Handicap)
Our finale is also a Premier Handicap but this time for the hurdlers. It’s a one mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards. Like race 5, this race has no rating restrictions attached to it so is not restricted to horses within a certain ratings band. As such, higher rated horses can take part but they must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals.

21. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

WELCOME FROM DAVID HOWDEN A very warm welcome to the second Howden Christmas Racing Weekend – two days of top-class Jumps racing, accompanied by an array of festive fun. As we approach the end of 2023, we can reflect on another extraordinary year, not only across the business at Howden, but also the hugely enjoyable times we have shared with colleagues and friends here at Ascot. For our business, it has been another year of significant progress and expansion across the group. Following a number of new business acquisitions, we welcomed, amongst others, A-Plan and Ascot Lark to the Howden family and united under our new logo with a fresh look and feel for Howden. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved and it would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of every one of our colleagues worldwide. Another significant step for us this year was becoming a Principal Partner of The British & Irish Lions, supporting both the men’s team and the development of the women’s game. The Lions, and Ascot, represent the best of British, so we think they’re a marvellous fit for us at Howden, a proudly British global insurance group. Our partnership with Ascot is also now supported by several other brilliant global racing partnerships, including the Victoria Racing Club in Melbourne, Australia and the Bahrain Turf Club, all of which have elevated our presence in the sport on a global scale. At the heart of our affiliation with Ascot is the Royal Meeting in June. This year it was a particular honour to have supported a photography exhibition with Getty Images here at Ascot celebrating, perhaps the most famous racegoer and owner of all time, Queen Elizabeth II’s love of racing. It would also be remiss of me not to reference the inimitable Frankie Dettori, who put on the most incredible display in his final year of riding in the UK. Racing immortality is already his and it has been a great privilege to watch him in action this year, particularly as he has been wearing the Howden logo as one of our ambassadors. We wish him all the best as he embarks on another exciting chapter of his life over in the US. And so, with that plethora of good news to celebrate over the past year, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and from all of us at Howden we look forward to seeing you again in the new year. Merry Christmas! David Howden CEO, Howden Group

RACE SUMMARY
Top-weight SCAMALLACH LIATH was a comfortable winner over an extended 3m here last month and a subsequent 6lb rise will not be enough to stop him today, on what is just his second start for Harry Derham’s yard. Wrappedupinmay steps up in trip for his handicap debut, as does Micro Millions, with the pair both meriting the utmost respect. Zonda could improve for the addition of a first-time tongue-tie, while Top Cloud, a winner on three of his last four starts, is also noted.

2 RACE SUMMARY
Already a Grade 2 winner over fences, SOLO is presented with a golden opportunity to further enhance his profile and, assuming he finds no issues with returning to this trip, this could prove to be a straightforward task. Straw Fan Jack has something to find based on the official ratings but, as he proved with a respectable second-placed finish here last moth, he is dangerous to underestimate. Nicky Henderson’s newcomer, Excello, has experience of fences from his time in France and can only benefit form his first start on these shores.

TRIPLE TRADE has taken his form to a new level this season with a string of consistent performances including a victory at Cheltenham in November. The seven-year-old finished a solid third in a valuable handicap here last time and this appears to be a fine opportunity for him to get back to winning ways. Black Gerry drops in class after being pulled up in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham and it would be no surprise to see him return to form. RACE SUMMARY
BOIS GUILLBERT remains capable of better and can resume winning ways back in a handicap. Goobinator is well treated on his best hurdles form and a Flat success at Catterick in the autumn suggests he retains all his ability so he’s second choice ahead of Risk d’Argent. Jagwar could also have a big say after finishing a head behind Inthewaterside at Aintree.

4 RACE SUMMARY
A fascinating battle between Champ, who goes well fresh, three-time winner Paisley Park and the up-and-coming youngsters looking to take over at the top. West Balboa fits the latter category at the age of seven and has won four of her six starts over hurdles making her a serious contender, but a chance is taken on BLUEKING D’OROUX. Unbeaten this season over shorter, Paul Nicholls steps him up to 3m for the first time, and he could yet surprise them all if staying the distance.

CELEBRATING SIDE GLANCE – OUR EQUINE AMBASSADOR For the first time ever Ascot Racecourse appointed an Equine Ambassador in 2023, with Side Glance joining the team to help us develop important links with the local community as part of the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) initiative Horses For Courses. Throughout 2023, Side Glance and his wonderful owner Leanne White have engaged with 450 people including racegoers, local school children and care home residents. As part of National Racehorse Week in September he showcased the life that racehorses live once they finish racing while earlier in the year he starred in the Royal Ascot marketing campaign.
Leanne and ‘Sidey’ were shortlisted for the RoR Community Impact Award which was just reward for all their hard work. Sadly, they didn’t make the final three but they are both winners in our eyes and we look forward to seeing Side Glance inspire and educate many more people in the community throughout 2024 and beyond.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses. For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. Vets generally find fewer superficial injuries with horses running over padded hurdles compared to the traditional birch hurdle.
At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for every meeting to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

5 RACE SUMMARY
Victtorino returned from a break to score on his first attempt over fences in the UK when taking a valuable prize over C&D last month, and he commands plenty of respect off a 4lb higher mark. Blackjack Magic is firmly on the upgrade and arrives following a career-best effort in the Badger Beer at Wincanton, while Git Maker’s Lingfield success gives him every chance of being in the mix. However, Gavin Cromwell saddles two live chances with Yeah Man, a faller here last month, and HASCOEUR CLERMONT, who gets the vote based on his Cheltenham victory. The form received a boost with the runner-up landing the Becher Chase and the use of Conor StoneWalsh’s 5lb claim further enhances his credentials.

6 RACE SUMMARY
The Greatwood Hurdle winner, IBERICO LORD, has been highly progressive since he joined the Nicky Henderson yard and is difficult to oppose, despite going up 8lb for last month’s Cheltenham success. Luccia (third), Nemean Lion (fifth) and Onlyamatteroftime (ran out) all renew rivalries from that race and can make this a good test on the revised terms. However, the selection’s stablemate Impose Toi has answered every question asked of him lately and may well emerge as the biggest threat to his travel companion. Altobelli and Hansard deepen the level of competition.

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.
HBLB The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £1,400,093 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from September to December 2023.
