SPRING FAMILY RACEDAY

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the Betfair Ascot Chase Raceday, our first meeting of 2024 after the Clarence House Chase Raceday in January was sadly abandoned due to frost. This is therefore our first Premier Raceday, part of a two-year pilot of changes across the sport with the ambition of increasing engagement among new and existing customers as well as improving revenues for all areas of the industry. As a result, with central support and increased executive contribution, we have been able to increase total prize money to a record £458,650 across the seven races today, up 6.5% from last year. That includes £175,000 for the Grade 1 Betfair Ascot Chase. We are hugely grateful to Betfair for their continued support of this top-level race as their sponsorship is now in its 16th year, having started in 2009. It looks set to be another high-class renewal, headed by L’Homme Presse representing Venetia Williams. She won the race with Teeton Mill in 1999 who then went on to run in the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival. After 25 years it is exciting for the yard to have another Gold Cup contender. Paul Nicholls bids for a record-breaking fifth win in the race with last year’s second Pic D’Orhy while multiple Grade 1 winner Ahoy Senor adds further depth as he travels down from Scotland for Lucinda Russell and Sail Away completes a strong field of four. Our thanks also go to Sodexo Live! for their support of the Reynoldstown Chase, often a key pointer for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase or the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Off the track, we are delighted to be presenting a cheque to the Injured Jockeys Fund for £38,440 which was raised through our IJF Ambassadors Programme across 2023 racedays. IJF Trustees, Tom Scudamore and Juliet Redfern, alongside IJF Ambassador, David Crosse, will be on hand to present trophies and accept the cheque in conjunction with the Injured Jockeys Fund Ambassadors Programme Swinley Handicap Chase. Our next raceday is the very popular Spring Family Raceday on Sunday 24th March as we conclude our 2023/24 Jumps season. We hope to see you and your families then. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman WELCOME

PAG E S 1 4 - 1 6

PAG E S 3 2 - 3 4

1st Race 1. 15pm The Ascot Shop Novices’ Hurdle Race

4th Race 3.00pm The Injured Jockeys Fund Ambassadors Programme Swinley Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race)

Today’s opener is a novice race. These tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular contest is a novices’ hurdle for horses aged five and upwards, run over two miles and about three furlongs. PAG E S 2 0 - 2 1

2nd Race 1.50pm The Sodexo Live! Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race)

Our first of two graded races, the Grade 2 Reynoldstown race is a high-class contest and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch horses lining up, and possibly some Cheltenham Festival contenders. Initially the weights in this three mile steeple chase for novices aged five and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 3lb for winners of a Class 2 weight-for-age or Class 1 handicap chase, to 5lb for victory in a Class 1 weight-for-age chase. PAG E S 2 4 - 2 7

3rd Race 2.25pm The Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards Handicap Hurdle Race

This handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards is run over two miles and about three furlongs. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Premier handicaps are the best handicaps on offer and can only be bettered by graded contests. Many of the five-year-olds and upwards in this three mile chase will be using this race as a springboard to possibly even better things. Even though it’s called a premium handicap, it’s still a handicap meaning that the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official rating. There is no handicap limit in this race which usually makes it ultra-competitive. PAG E S 3 8 - 3 9

5th Race 3.36pm The Betfair Ascot Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race)

The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and five furlongs. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football - quite simply there is no higher level, so these races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race so the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex. PAG E S 4 2 - 4 4

6th Race 4.10pm The Ascot Racecourse Supports Box4Kids Handicap Hurdle Race

Our penultimate race is a handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards rated from 0-125 and is run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 125 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 120. PAG E S 4 8 - 5 0

7th Race 4.10pm The British EBF Mares’ Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race)

Our finale is a National Hunt Flat Race - or ‘bumper’, as they are more commonly referred to - this is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat, over hurdles or in steeple chases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to fillies and mares aged four, five and six, which are E.B.F. eligible, and will be run over around two miles.

21. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

STRENGTH & LEARNING THROUGH HORSES – ONE YEAR OF SUPPORT Strength & Learning Through Horses (SLTH) is a charity offering equine assisted therapy and horsemanship programmes for young people suffering from mental health issues. At the start of 2023, Ascot Racecourse Supports co-sponsored the build of an arena at the charity’s new site in Barnet which is hoped to become London’s first equine therapy centre. It has been the space in which 360 young people aged between 6 and 25, with 43% from ethnically diverse backgrounds, have been able to make life-changing connections with its special horses. We also took jockeys Hayley Turner and Ashleigh Wicheard, ambassadors for Ascot Racecourse Supports and SLTH respectively, to compete against students in an obstacle course race! During the past year, the charity has doubled the capacity of its therapeutic education programme – a hybrid model of education within a therapeutic framework. This supports young people who are referred to the charity in mental health crisis and are unable to engage in a group and/or build friendships. Family Work After a hugely successful three-year pilot, the charity successfully secured continuation funding for its Parent and Young People Project. This work supports parents in developing an awareness of their child’s emotional needs and responses and is particularly successfully in engaging hard to reach groups and young people who have refused family work offered by other services. “The progress that *Peter* has made is amazing. In the six months he has been coming to SLTH he has become a different child. He will often talk about the sessions and uses them to make sense of his feelings. He is now confident enough to join a group, which six months ago he would not even have considered doing.” Parent of current student

12

Recent achievements include an “Innovation in Mental Health Award” for an outreach project within Warren Court, a secure NHS mental health service, ex-racehorse “Dreamisi” and staff member, Matt Bannon, reaching the final of the Retraining of Racehorses 2024 Community Impact Award and numerous award nominations. Next Steps In 2024, the charity will be responding to demand for a professional training programme for students who express an interest in securing a professional equestrian qualification and/or applying for work. Phase Two of the build is to replace the derelict stables with a purpose-built stable yard and barn. Costs are estimated at £700K and will require the charity to continue to fundraise. INTHEWATERSIDE may have disappointed here on his penultimate start, but stepping back up to this sort of trip had a huge part to play in him scoring on his handicap debut at Lingfield’s Winter Million fixture. Conditions should be in his favour once more and Paul Nicholls’ six-year-old is preferred to recent Plumpton winner Idy Wood, as well as Phantomofthepoints, who was narrowly denied at Ayr on his hurdling debut. Bucksy Des Epeires and Vincenzo are capable of being in the shake-up as well.

It could pay to take a chance on the progressive HENRY’S FRIEND, who was value for more than the winning margin when scoring at Hereford last month and the step up in trip is bound to eke out further improvement. 3 RACE SUMMARY

RARE EDITION has only had the one go at this distance, when turned over at odds-on in the Sidney Banks last year, but it shouldn’t be a problem and he could still be ahead of his mark on the back of a comfortable success at Kempton last month. Rambo T did it easily at Newbury, while course winner Monviel returns to hurdles after a spell over the larger obstacles. Last year’s winner Irish Hill and the improving Bad are capable of being in the shake-up as well.

JOCKEYS SUPPORTING JOCKEYS The Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) provides support to jockeys past and present who are injured, unable to ride or in need of help. This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the Fund and since being founded in 1964 the charity has helped thousands of jockeys and their families and has paid out over £20 million in charitable assistance.

The IJF Ascot Ambassador Programme has been set up to provide fine-dining guests with an informative insight from former jockeys on racedays. The programme has resulted in over £167,000 being raised to date to help the rehabilitation and care of many jockeys and beneficiaries. Money raised has helped contribute towards equipping the IJF’s rehabilitation and fitness centres in Oaksey House, Peter O’Sullevan House, Jack Berry House and recently the newly opened Southwest Taunton Hub. The Ascot Ambassador programme has helped fund aqua rehabilitation equipment for the hydrotherapy pools and gym equipment. Additional equipment that is vital for ‘return to ride’ fitness assessments and injury prevention has also been purchased. The programme has also provided over 1,800 injury management, physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions via our centres.

“We are very grateful to Ascot and the racing public for their kind generosity via this fantastic initiative, raising vital funds for the Injured Jockeys Fund. We are sincerely grateful for the support which helps jockeys past and present.”

Lisa Hancock CEO, Injured Jockeys Fund

In recognition of this hugely successful programme, we have donated race naming rights to our 3.00pm race, “ The Injured Jockeys Fund Ambassadors Programme Swinley Handicap Steeple Chase.” Donations can be made using the QR code and are gratefully received. INJURED JOCKEYS FUND

4 RACE SUMMARY

REVELS HILL has threatened to land a race of this nature, as evidenced by his third in the corresponding event from this mark 12 months ago. He travelled strongly into contention in the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown when last seen, before weakening late on, so he might be worth chancing now dropped in trip on his comeback. Threeunderthrufive appeals as a likely candidate having occupied the runner-up berth on his last two starts, while others to note include Shan Blue and Victtorino.

RACE SUMMARY

L’HOMME PRESSE returned from over a year off with a more comfortable victory than the margin would suggest at Lingfield. Venetia Williams’ stable star holds all the aces providing this doesn’t come too soon and he is expected to repel the likely challenge of Pic D’Orhy, who found only Ryanair favourite Banbridge too strong in the Silviniaco Conti at Kempton. Ahoy Senor suffered tack issues but still showed more enthusiasm when fourth in the Cotswold Chase and he should not be underestimated. Official ratings would suggest Sail Away has it all to do.

WELCOMING BOX4KIDS

Today we are delighted to welcome beneficiaries of The Barrie Wells Trust, a charity founded and funded by Barrie Wells MBE who runs the Box4Kids initiative. The charity is unique in that it does not ask for any monetary donations, just simply the kind donation of executive boxes. Box4Kids invites seriously ill and disabled children to enjoy a sporting or entertainment event in the luxury of an executive box. Comfortable and safe, a box is an ideal environment for a child who normally is not able to attend sporting or entertainment events due to their illness or disability. Most importantly, it’s the perfect way to make a child feel special for the day, giving them a VIP experience to remember. The Trust collaborates with over 250 sports clubs, entertainment venues and boxholders who kindly donate their boxes. To date, over 17,000 children and their families have enjoyed a Box4Kids experience. The Trust have a network of over 201 hospitals, hospices, and charities across the UK including Great Ormond Street, Royal Manchester

Children’s, Great North Children’s and Alder Hey who nominate children to attend. Getting involved is easy. Whether you’re a business, a club, event venue or an individual, Box4kids invites you to donate your box and aims to make it as simple as possible. Just choose an event you’d like to donate your box for and its team does the rest, from organising logistics, inviting children from local hospitals for the day and hosting them with their families. If you are interested in donating your executive box, or would like to find out more about the Trust and Box4Kids, you can contact the team directly at info@barriewells.org or via the office on 01524 590600. Our 4.10pm race has been named “The Ascot Racecourse Supports Box4Kids Handicap Hurdle Race” and the children have the honour of judging the best turned out horse.

RACE SUMMARY

LOUP DE MAULDE returned from a 281-day break to finish second in a Pertemps qualifier at Huntingdon and has only been put up 2lb. Robbie Llewellyn’s gelding may have been let off lightly and has cheekpieces reapplied, so he shades the vote. Coco Mademoiselle failed to land the odds in a novice hurdle, also at Huntingdon, but her Lingfield victory prior to that suggests she could be capable off a mark of 121. Last-time-out winners Havaila and Rare Clouds are other alternatives.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses. For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. Vets generally find fewer superficial injuries with horses running over padded hurdles compared to the traditional birch hurdle.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for every meeting to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

7 RACE SUMMARY

ANNO POWER shaped with plenty of promise on her debut at Exeter when second behind a subsequent winner and she would have learned a great deal from the experience. Harry Fry’s mare goes in a first-time hood and could prove very hard to beat with normal improvement. Roaring Home had Lady Jago a place behind when runner-up at Ludlow and is expected to confirm that form to have a say, while any market support for Khutulun Khan with Nico de Boinville booked should also be noted.

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.

HBLB The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £320,049 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 1st January to 22nd March 2024.
