Welcome to the Spring Family Raceday, our final Jumps meeting of the 2023/24 season. We have been treated to some thrilling action throughout the winter, including Crambo beating Paisley Park in the Howden Long Walk Hurdle and Pic D’Orhy’s impressive performance in the Betfair Ascot Chase.
Some of the form from our meetings has played out exceptionally well across the season. Jango Baie, a winner at Ascot in November, won the Grade 1 Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree while at the Cheltenham Festival just last week Chianti Classico, successful in a novice chase here in November, won the Ultima Handicap Chase.
Unexpected Party also appeared at Ascot in November before winning the Grand Annual while Luccia won the Betfair Exchange Trophy in December before finishing third in the Champion Hurdle.
Today we have £170,000 in prize money on offer and some competitive action to enjoy with 76 horses declared across the seven races. It will be great to see so many old favourites line up in the Home-Start Bracknell Forest Veterans’ Handicap Chase, including course and distance specialist Larry and Two For Gold, who won the race last year.
Off the track, there is lots to enjoy for families of all ages including a meet and greet with the Gruffalo in the Furlong Friends Funhouse, an animal arena featuring dog agility, ferret racing and falconry displays as well as bushcraft activities alongside arts and crafts. The entries for this year’s Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition will also be on display for you to view and vote for your favourite.
We are delighted to be opening our Ascot Racecourse Supports Sensory Room before racing. You can find out more on page 13 of the racecard but this dedicated space will be available to children under the age of 16 with neuro-diverse conditions and is an important part of our ambition to make the sport more accessible. Also with us today are the charities Achieving For Children and Home-Start Bracknell Forest who both have races donated to them.
Our grateful thanks go to LK Bennett for their sponsorship of the LK Bennett Handicap Steeple Chase and the last race of the day is sponsored by the Colts and Fillies Club, our free club for under 18s. We welcome members Seraphina and Oliver to judge the best turned out horse and present the trophies to winning connections
We hope you enjoy the day and look forward to seeing you back at Ascot soon. Our next meeting, Royal Ascot Trials Day on 1st May, is our first Flat fixture of the 2024 season.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & ChairmanFree wristbands are available from all entrances for children and vulnerable racegoers to aid with a lost child/person. If this situation does arise, racegoers are encouraged to contact the nearest steward who will assist.
Ascot operates a strict over 18+ policy for betting or the purchase of alcohol. Racegoers over 18 can collect an 18+ wristband from any entrance or the information desk on the Grandstand Concourse with photographic proof of age.

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Ascot Racecourse Supports Sensory Room Maiden Hurdle Race (GBB Race)
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile, three and a half furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and will almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience they gain today.
PAGES 20-22
2nd Race 2.10pm
The Ascot Racecourse Supports Achieving For Children Handicap Steeple Chase
Our first handicap on the card is a two mile and five furlong novice hurdle race for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
PAGES 26-28
3rd Race 2.45pm
The Events At Ascot Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Race (GBB Race)
The third race on the card is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds only, also known as juveniles To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105
PAGES 32-33
4th Race 3.20pm
The LK Bennett Handicap Steeple Chase (GBB Race)
Our feature race of the day is a two mile and one furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb
PAGES 36-39
5th Race 3.55pm
The Ascot Shop Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race (GBB Race)
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allows them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. This particular two mile, seven and a half furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races and have a handciap rating between 0-110.
PAGES 42-44
6th Race 4.30pm
The Home-Start Bracknell Forest Veterans’ Handicap Steeple Chase (Leg 4 of The Veterans Chase Series)
Our penultimate race, as the race title suggests, is a veterans’ steeple chase designed specifically for those in the later stages of their National Hunt careers
These types of races often attract some past stars of the sport and provide a perfect opportunity for fans to catch a final glimpse of their equine heroes before they are retired. In order to qualify for this three mile handicap, horses must be ten-years-old or older and be officially rated between 0 and 150
PAGES 48-50
7th Race 5.05pm
The Colts and Fillies Handicap Hurdle Race
Our finale is a two mile, five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race which has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards rated from 0 to 140. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
Ascot would like to take this opportunity to thank today’s race sponsors for their generous support.

Today we are delighted to officially open the “Ascot Racecourse Supports Sensory Room” which is available to guests aged 16yrs and under who have neuro-diverse conditions and might need a calm, sensory space to enable them to fully enjoy a raceday.
The decision to have our own dedicated sensory room follows a successful pilot programme run by Racing Together and “Autism in Racing”. This saw us host a temporary, mobile sensory unit over our 2022/3 family racedays that families with autistic children were invited to attend. This initiative marks the next step in Ascot’s wider accessibility plans to accommodate and encourage more families, including those from diverse backgrounds, to experience horse racing. We also hope to open the facility up to any SEN schools and/or charities who may wish to visit the racecourse, either for an
event or raceday. We are extremely grateful for the support of the Betting and Gaming Council which, by using money donated from bookmakers’ profits on the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot, has enabled this legacy project to be possible.
The room, located behind the Cedar Tree Lawns, will officially be opened at 12.30pm today by Mims Davies MP, Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work and Sir Francis Brooke, Chairman and His Majesty’s Representative at Ascot Racecourse. We have also invited families and representatives from neuro-diverse charities, Autism Berkshire, Swings & Smiles, Autism in Racing and Parenting with Special Children to join us.
Our first race at 1.35pm has been named “The Ascot Racecourse Supports Sensory Room Maiden Hurdle Race” and alongside Mims Davies MP, we have invited representatives from Total Sensory and Rapid Retail, the suppliers for the sensory equipment and unit respectively, to present trophies to winning connections.

Our annual Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition is underway with schools invited to submit artwork with a “Royal Ascot” theme to commemorate the spectacle of this international event. This community project provides children and schools in the local area an opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the Ascot Heath Tunnel, creating a colourful walkway for both Royal Ascot visitors and local residents.
Pupils aged 4-14 years from local schools have submitted their artwork to be in with a chance of winning cash prizes of £1,000 for their school, as well as Amazon vouchers to spend for themselves.
Today, the short-listed entries are on display within the Furlong Friends Funzone located in the Pavilion building. Please come and vote for your favourites or alternatively you can view the entries and vote online at: ascot.com/school-art-competition or via the QR Code below.
Winners and runners up will be announced at the beginning of May with cheque presentations taking place at our Victoria Cup Raceday on Saturday, 11th May 2024. We feel the children have really surpassed themselves this year!
Today we are delighted to welcome representatives and families from Achieving for Children (AfC), a community interest company created in 2014 who deliver social care, education and health services to children and young people across three local authorities (The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, Richmond and Kingston).
AfC’s mission is to provide children and their families with the support and services they need to live happy, healthy and successful lives. It strives to achieve excellence in everything it does by putting children and young people first in the design, delivery and evaluation of every service it provides AfC Virtual School and College supports the education, employment and training of children with a social worker in collaboration with its many partners.
In order for the children to thrive, AfC need your help, as part of their ‘universal family’. Looked after children’s education can be disrupted because there are not enough foster carers - could you open your home to care for children? Foster carers don’t just provide safety and a loving home, they are role models, guides and teachers who change lives. For more information about fostering please scan the QR code below or visit the fostering pages of achievingforchildren.org.uk
Does your workplace offer foster-friendly support and provide work-related opportunities for care experienced young people? AfC Virtual School and College are working with local businesses to create an attachment aware community. This includes running public training. If you want to know more about their forthcoming Better Futures Business Events contact: afcvirtualschool@achievingforchildren.org.uk
In recognition of AFC’s work, we have named our 2.10pm race “The Ascot Racecourse Supports Achieving For Children Handicap Steeple Chase”.
Should you be interested in learning more about fostering or AfC today, please visit our Ascot Racecourse Supports stand on the Grandstand Concourse.

RACE SUMMARY
ROCKINASTORM appeared to have plenty in hand when scoring over 3m at Ludlow last month and that was his third win from just five starts over fences. Off a 6lb higher mark here, the seven-year-old could add another victory to his record. Godot was only narrowly denied on his most recent outing at Plumpton and another good effort can be expected, while Invincible Nao and King’s Threshold complete the shortlist.

RACE SUMMARY
Royal Way has to be of interest following two victories at Ludlow in recent months, but marginal preference is for KADO DE JOIE. Nicky Henderson’s gelding got off the mark at Market Rasen last month and that form suggests that an opening mark of 110 should be workable. Hamsiyann also put in a career best on his most recent outing and should not be discounted, while Kourosh is another to consider

This can go the way of THELASTHIGHKING, who has shown plenty of pace over further the last twice and should be suited by dropping back in distance on this occasion. A winner of two of his last four starts in this sphere, Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge is narrowly preferred to Martator, who bounced back to winning ways with a taking performance at Newbury earlier in the month. Frere D’armes has shown little in recent starts but is well capable on his day for in-form connections.

RACE SUMMARY
A tentative vote goes to REDBRIDGE RAMBLER, who was slightly unlucky when carried left and short of room late on at Sedgefield last month. That represented arguably a career best for the six-year-old and the step up in trip should suit as he looks to get the better of Plumpton scorer Nickelforce and Face D’music, who makes his handicap debut following a couple of decent efforts at Hereford. Others to note include Perculator and Rebel Intentions.

Today we are delighted to welcome Home-Start Bracknell Forest - a charity whom we have supported via our grant funding and whom are our nominated 2024 charity to receive public donations from any online ticket bookings
In celebration of its 30th anniversary, we have named our 4.30pm race “The Home-Start Bracknell Forest Veterans’ Handicap Steeple Chase” and have invited charity representatives to present trophies to winning connections
You can read about its services below or you can meet the team, who are running an egg cups and insect house decorating activation, in the grandstand opposite the Ascot Shop.
Home-Start Bracknell Forest is a family support charity, celebrating 30 years of providing invaluable support and friendship to local vulnerable families, resulting in positive outcomes for thousands of families living in the community. Being a parent, whatever your situation, can be very difficult at times, especially when children are young. Many parents feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the stresses of family life, particularly if they have little support from family and friends, just when they need it most. A carefully selected volunteer who has parenting experience, will regularly visit a family in their own home, offering emotional and practical support through difficult times. This parent-to-parent support is a simple yet effective way of giving hope and enabling families to get back on track.
Home-Start Bracknell also provides regular targeted family groups to enhance family wellbeing whilst reducing isolation and
loneliness; helping families to build positive community networks and enabling families to create nurturing stable environments for children to thrive.
Home-Start Bracknell Forest supports parents (and parents-to-be), who have young children and who are dealing with issues such as:
• Isolation
• Mental health
• Sickness and disability
• Domestic abuse
• Multiple birth
• Difficult relationships
• Difficulty in managing children’s development Support is confidential, flexible and responsive to each family’s individual needs.
If you live in Bracknell Forest with a child under 6 and would like support from a home visiting trained volunteer or to join one of the regular Groups, please get in touch with the friendly team who will go through the process with you. The charity are our official bucket collectors today, so please donate if you are able.

RACE SUMMARY
Two For Gold landed the corresponding event 12 months ago and connections will be hopeful that a first-time tongue-tie can see the admirable veteran return to form. However, after scoring in a valuable veterans’ series final at Warwick in January, SAM BROWN was far from disgraced in the Denman Chase and it was a similar story in the Coral Trophy at Kempton last time. Down in class and with Freddie Gingell taking off a crucial 5lb, he might be the answer. Larry is also noted.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £2,096,981 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 23rd March to 23rd June 2024.
