Welcome to Royal Ascot Trials Day, our first Flat fixture of 2024.
This Flat season we are delighted to be offering record prize money at Ascot of £15 million, an increase of just over 4% on 2023 across our 17 fixtures (excluding the industry owned QIPCO British Champions Day in October). This includes a total of over £10 million at Royal Ascot for the first time. No race at the Royal Meeting will be run for less than £110,000 and all Group 1 races will be worth a minimum of £650,000.
Today’s racecard forms a key part of the planning for the Royal Meeting for many trainers and owners, with plenty of victories at Royal Ascot coming off the back of a run at this fixture. Last year, Coltrane impressively won the Longines Sagaro Stakes before mounting a bold bid in the Gold Cup, denied only by Courage Mon Ami and a fairytale Frankie Dettori ride. Meanwhile, Bradsell began his season in the British Racing School 40th Anniversary Commonwealth Cup Trial, before recording the first Group 1 victory of his career in the King’s Stand Stakes, which has been renamed The King Charles III Stakes with the kind permission of His Majesty.
Today we are delighted to be hosting four charities and their supporters who are celebrating milestone anniversaries through our Ascot Supports programme; equine charities The Brooke and Heros, as well as local charities Alma Beacon and Learning To Work. Heros will be presented with a cheque for £1,000 as the charity that accumulated the most losing betting slips through our Bet With Ascot Donation Scheme throughout the 2023/24 Jumps season - that presentation will take place after the Bet With Ascot Donation Scheme Paradise Stakes.
We would like to thank our partner Longines, sponsor of today’s Longines Sagaro Stakes, and race sponsors Darley and the British EBF. Equally, we would like to welcome guests from Naas Racecourse today, who will be presenting trophies after races five and six, the two divisions of The Naas Racecourse Handicap This is part of a longstanding relationship with the Irish track, which hosts its Royal Ascot Trials Day on Sunday, 19th May.
Please enjoy your day, and we hope to welcome you back to Ascot next week, when we race on Friday and Saturday.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & ChairmanPAGES 16-17

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial EBF Conditions Stakes (GBB Race)
This race is a five furlong conditions stakes for two-year-olds. The runners in this type of race are subject to specific conditions that often revolve around age or sex, or confine the race to horses that have yet to win above a particular level. In this instance, the race is restricted to two-year-olds which are EBF eligible.
PAGES 20-21
2nd Race 1.40pm
The Bet With Ascot Donation Scheme Paradise Stakes (A Queen Anne Stakes Trial) (Listed Race)
This one mile contest for four-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 5lb for colts and geldings and 9st for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 2 win.
PAGES 24-25
3rd Race 2.15pm
The Longines Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) (A Gold Cup Trial)
One of the feature races of the day is this two mile Group 3 race for four-year-olds and upwards. A race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2, many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here –3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.
PAGES 28-30
4th Race 2.45pm
The Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes (Group 3)
The second of our feature races, this six furlong race for three-year-olds is a Group 3 contest and will attract some of the speediest juveniles around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 3 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 3lb and fillies 9st, although any runner which has already won a Group 1 or 2 race will be issued with a 4lb penalty.
PAGES 34-36
5th Race 3.25pm
The Naas Racecourse Handicap (Div I)
This is a five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85
To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80
PAGES 40-42
6th Race 4.00pm
The Naas Racecourse Handicap (Div II)
Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions
PAGES 46-47
7th Race 4.35pm
The Darley British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes
The penultimate race on the card is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
PAGES 48-50
8th Race 5.10pm
The Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap Stakes
Our finale is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

21. Weight (stones/pounds)
22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
23. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RACE SUMMARY
Tanager defied a slow beginning to make a winning debut at Chelmsford towards the end of March and the manner of victory suggested he may have more to offer for the switch to turf. Rock Hunter won nicely at Chantilly on his first career start and is likely to go well, but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the sole newcomer DILIGENTLY were to be successful. A 100,000-pound purchase at Goffs UK Premier Yearling sale, his trainer won this contest with a debutant in 2018 and the son of Harry Angel comes from an excellent Cheveley Park family

Windsor & Ascot Driving Group (WADG)
Sport in Mind
Windsor and Ascot Carriage Driving Group for the Disabled enables disabled people to learn how to carriage drive with ponies and to enjoy an outdoor activity with animals and other people.
Many disabled people, who would otherwise find it impossible to pursue an outdoor activity, have benefited from the recreational and social therapy that this provides.
A former World Para-Equestrian Driving Championships driver describes driving with the RDA as: “Fun, a sense of achievement, exercise of mind and body and making friends. For some people it’s the highlight of their week as it might be their only day out.”
The charity has two ponies and heads out for weekly drives on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings from March to November The charity is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and we are delighted to support them.
To find out more about their services or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer, visit: windsorandascotdriving.org.uk
The charity’s mission is to transform the lives and mental health of children and adults through sport and physical activity
Sport in Mind (SIM) is the UK’s leading mental health sports charity and delivers physical activity (sport, walking, dance and movement, gardening and exercise sessions) projects in partnership with the amazing NHS in order to aid recovery, promote mental wellbeing, improve physical health, combat social isolation and empower people to move their lives forward in a positive direction.
In addition to delivering physical activity programmes to improve the lives of people experiencing mental health problems, SIM also educates people about mental illness and the benefits of being physically active. Sadly, there are still many common misconceptions about mental illness in society today and SIM uses the power of sport to bring people together to talk about mental health and help change attitudes

MALJOOM has only seen the racetrack once since an unlucky fourth here in the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot in 2022, when only beating one rival home in the Joel Stakes at Newmarket last September It augurs well that the five-year-old is out early in the season and William Haggas’ charge is expected to land this en route to bigger targets that lay ahead Epictetus has conditions to suit based on his Group 3 success at Goodwood last August when claiming the scalp of Nostrum, while Britannia Stakes winner Docklands might not be done improving yet.

11-4 Coltrane (IRE), 3-1 Trueshan (FR), 7-2 Quickthorn (GB), Sweet William (IRE), 14-1 Caius Chorister (FR)
RACE SUMMARY
COLTRANE returns to defend his crown having enjoyed a fine spell during last summer with a fine runner-up display in the Gold Cup and victory in the Lonsdale Cup at York. His form tailed off at the back end of last season and, while disappointing on his return in the Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan, the seven-year-old is more than capable of bouncing back, especially in first-time cheekpieces. Last year’s Goodwood Cup hero Quickthorn is sure to be on the front end and is respected along with Trueshan.

RACE SUMMARY
An open event in which Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint third Starlust will look to bounce back to winning form having posted a couple of solid efforts at Meydan this year Karl Burke has a decent record in this contest and Got To Love A Grey, who was a touch underwhelming in a Group 3 at Chantilly last month, must be respected. The vote goes to EL BODON, who finished an excellent second in the Greenham 11 days ago and looks to hold strong claims on that piece of form, especially as this stiff finish should suit.

T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals.
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy
FAVOURITES THEREARE HERE NO
British racing is the biggest investor in equine health and welfare in this country. Over the last 20 years more than £47m has been spent on advancing veterinary science, research, education and welfare initiatives. This work benefits every breed of horse. To find out more visit horsepwr.co.uk

RACE SUMMARY
The Charlie Appleby stable has made an excellent start to the season and they could have a decent newcomer on their hands with DIAMOND RAIN, a daughter of Oaks winner Dancing Rain and half-sister to the talented Magic Lily She is narrowly preferred to fellow debutant Shaha, who cost a pretty penny at the sales for last year’s winning trainer but may need further in time going by her pedigree. A comfortable winner on debut at Chelmsford last month for which she carries a 6lb penalty, Aquacell sets the standard, while Chorus is another open to improvement after a solid runner-up effort at Wolverhampton.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
