Welcome to the second day of the Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Racing Weekend.
It has been an exciting couple of weeks as the Flat season moves into top gear following Royal Ascot Trials Day and the Guineas meeting at Newmarket. Many of the winners will now have Royal Ascot on their radar and in particular it will be exciting to see the rematch between the 2,000 Guineas first and second, Notable Speech and Rosallion, in the St James’s Palace Stakes.
First though, we are thrilled to be able to offer in excess of £250,000 in prize money today and delighted to see more than 100 horses declared across the seven-race card. Our grateful thanks go to all our sponsors for their support, which is so important for prize money, especially Peroni Nastro Azzurro as the headline sponsor of the weekend and four races today.
We also welcome Carey Group, Mariner Systems and Lavazza and are thrilled that the feature race, the £100,000 Victoria Cup will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Lavazza being an Official Supplier at Ascot Racecourse. The race itself was first staged at Hurst Park Racecourse, moving to Ascot when the course closed in 1962. It can often be a key pointer to some of the handicaps at the Royal Meeting and was won in 2019 by Cape Byron who went on to success in the Wokingham Stakes.
Off the track, we are thrilled to welcome the winners and runners up from this year’s Royal Ascot Local School’s Art Competition. They will be presented with their prizes by leading Flat jockey Hayley Turner at a celebratory tea during this afternoon. The selected entries are available to view on pages 12 and 13 of the racecard and will soon be added to our gallery of previous winners in the Heath Tunnel.
We hope you enjoy the day and look forward to welcoming you back for the Royal Meeting in just over five weeks’ time.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & ChairmanPAGES 16-18

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Handicap Stakes
Today’s opener is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for four-year-olds which have been rated from 71 to 90. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 24-26
2nd Race 2.05pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% British EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
This race is a one mile handicap race for three-year-old fillies and upwards. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
PAGES 28-32
3rd Race 2.40pm
The Lavazza & Ascot 10 Year Anniversary Victoria Cup (Heritage Handicap)
This race is a seven furlong heritage handicap which has the same conditions as the previous race but is for four-year-olds and upwards. A heritage handicap in more basic terms is a handicap that is worth more than £50,000 and is open to horses rated 0-105 Due to the decent prize money on offer, they are usually highly-competitive and attract many top handicappers from both Britain and Ireland.
PAGES 38-40
4th Race 3.10pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%
Novice Stakes
This five furlong Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
PAGES 46-47
5th Race 3.45pm
The Carey Group Handicap Stakes
This race is a one mile and two furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 69 to 88 Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
PAGES 50-52
6th Race 4.20pm
The Mariner Systems
Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
Our penultimate race is a one mile and two furlong handicap that has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated between 66 and 85 However, horses officially rated in excess of 85 are also eligible to take part. The conditions of this race stipulate that the maximum weight to be carried by a horse rated 85 would be 10st 2lb, so should a horse rated 87 be entered to run, they would be asked to carry 2lb more than the top weight – 10st 4lb, unless recieving the weight allowance for being a three-year-old.
PAGES 54-58
7th Race 4.55pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%
Blue Ribbon Handicap Stakes
The finale is a six furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

20. Weight (stones/pounds)
21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

First brewed in 1963, Peroni Nastro Azzurro exemplifies the traditions of Italian craftsmanship, passion, and flair – blending the finest ingredients - including hops, barley, and the extra special Nostrano dell'Isola maize grown exclusively for Peroni in Northern Italy. This helps to give the beer its uniquely crisp and refreshing taste, and its distinctive light, golden colour. The iconic Peroni Nastro Azzurro brand has recently added two more varieties to the portfolio: Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% has been developed with new innovative dealcoholisation technology to deliver the same uplifting taste, with zero alcohol. And Peroni Nastro Azzurro Stile Capri - a brandnew, refreshing ‘sunshine’ lager featuring a subtle hint of Italian lemon and lower bitterness to deliver exceptional quality, inspired by the taste and scent of Capri island just off Italy’s Amalfi coast. Please drink responsibly.

ROYAL ASCOT LOCAL SCHOOLS ART COMPETITION
We are delighted to announce the winners of our Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition which saw pupils aged 4-14 from a record 26 local schools send in 1,300 entries. Over 4,000 online votes were received and winning students won cash prizes of £1,000 for their school, as well as Amazon vouchers to spend on themselves.
In recognition of this initiative, winners and runners up plus teachers from the respective schools have been invited to enjoy a celebratory prize-giving tea today. They will have the honour of having their picture taken on the podium to commemorate this year’s competition and the winning pictures will join the artwork in the Heath Tunnel.
Since 2018, this community project has provided children and schools in the local area with an opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the Ascot Heath Tunnel, creating a colourful walkway for both Royal Ascot visitors and local residents. Our new Ascot Racecourse Supports Ambassador, Hayley Turner, was also asked to pick her favourite which was Bella Bruce’s entry.
We are delighted to once again welcome and host members of The Blind Racegoers Club (London) which has been taking registered blind and partially-sighted people horse racing for the past 50 years.
The club started from humble beginnings – their founder, equine artist Caroline Marsden, used to read books to blind people and one day in conversation with one of the people she was reading for, told him that she was going horse racing at the weekend. The blind person said that he had never been but would like to go, so Caroline said she would take him. The visit was a great success and the blind person thoroughly enjoyed his day out.
Caroline, alongside some friends to help, then organised a party of 12 blind people to go to a race meeting, funding it herself, again with great success One of her friends was Valerie Freedman, the wife of
Louis Freedman who subsequently owned Reference Point - the Derby and St Leger winner trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil and ridden by Steve Cauthen. Caroline and Valerie continued to arrange meetings on an ad-hoc basis and decided to set about raising funds to establish a club.
The Blind Racegoers Club have a long history of attending racing at Ascot and had the honour of being presented to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother at QIPCO King George Day for many years.
The Club are keen to encourage the next generation of blind racegoers to experience a day at the races and interested parties can contact the club via email: londonandseconnection@rnib.org.uk

RACE SUMMARY
The hat-trick seeking Kotari appeals under a 5lb penalty after a 10-length romp at Salisbury last weekend and has little to fear from stepping up from 1m2f so is a must for the shortlist. However, HAKU is already a multiple winner at this trip on artificial surfaces and, still unexposed on turf, this venue provides an ideal stage for the five-year-old to show his worth after a string of improved all-weather efforts. Great Bedwyn is another for consideration.

RACE SUMMARY
Flying Finn and My Margie are both on for three-timers after making good strides since the start of the campaign. Each warrants close inspection but face no easy task, given both are set to race from out of the handicap. With that in mind, the votes goes to the class-dropping TOPANGA, who should find this easier than her reappearance task in the Fred Darling at Newbury. Stepping up in trip could also be a source of improvement for the Andrew Baldingtrained filly.

RACE SUMMARY
DANIELLE didn’t have to come out of second gear when landing the spoils at Wetherby 13 days ago and she can further strengthen her Oaks claims by repelling the likely challenge of Treasure, who won over an extended mile at Nottingham when last seen. Stablemate You Got To Me should also benefit from a step up in trip having failed to make an impact in Listed company at Newmarket in November. Rubies Are Red should not be underestimated either.

RACE SUMMARY
The classy Mostabshir is a very likely type for a race of this nature and he should be thereabouts given he can sit handy to pick off his rivals from a stands-side position in the stalls. However, C&D winner PEARLE D’OR will have a choice of where to go from his middle draw and that ability to switch with the pace could be key Obviously, there are dangers aplenty and the likes of Hickory, Merlin The Wizard, Ropey Guest and Popmaster all have chances in a highly competitive renewal.

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals.
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

RACE SUMMARY
DEFIANCE made a pleasing seasonal reappearance when staying on to finish second over 1m2f at Epsom last month and, over this extra yardage, he gets the vote to continue Roger Varian’s recent good form. The Euphrates looked like a colt who was still learning his trade when shedding his maiden tag over an extended mile at Gowran Park last October and, after finishing second in a Leopardstown Group 3 last month, he commands respect for a trainer who has tasted success in four of the last 11 renewals. Imperial Sovereign is noted too.

RACE SUMMARY
The first progeny of star two-year-old Pinatubo, HALLASAN shaped with encouragement when only beaten a length into third on his debut at Newmarket. Charlie Appleby’s colt should come on plenty for that outing and he gets the vote ahead of newcomer Aysgarth, who cost 180,000gns and hails from a yard that knows how to ready one first time out. Original Outlaw was even more expensive and is from the family of Group 1 winner Without Parole, while Reposado and Xanthe cannot be ruled out either

RACE SUMMARY
It is hard to look past REMARQUEE, who posted some very creditable efforts behind top Group 1 performers on more than one occasion last season, and she can return to winning ways en route to some stiffer assignments later in the year Great Generation arrives on the back of an admirable fourth over 7f at Deauville last month, form which is working out well, and she can give the selection the most to think about. Cell Sa Beela also makes some appeal.

RACE SUMMARY
Narrowly denied on his last two starts, including at Epsom on his return, MIDAIR should relish going up in trip being by Frankel, and the booking of William Buick catches the eye as he looks to break the maiden on his handicap debut. A comfortable winner at Ayr on his penultimate outing and given a spin at Doha since, City Burglar is a key player, along with the hat-trickseeking Magico. Similar to the selection, Sindoriyno is another who should appreciate going up to 1m2f after an eyecatching effort when staying on late in the piece at Wolverhampton.

RACE SUMMARY
A tricky puzzle to solve, but a chance is taken on the well-related Oaks entrant WARDA JAMILA Andrew Balding has been in fine form of late and this half-sister to top-class stayer Coltrane looks likely to have a say off an initial mark of 80. The progressive Ciara Pearl is feared most after a hat-trick of wins already this term, but another 5lb rise could be one step too far. Turn Up The Heat isn’t easily ruled out on her first taste of handicap action.

RACE SUMMARY
Plenty of chances in this deep field, with slight preference for MISTER BLUEBIRD, who arrives 3lb below his last winning mark. Heather Main’s charge made a pleasing reappearance over 5f here and this step up in trip, coupled with a slight ease by the handicapper, can help him reverse the form with Buccabay, who finished a length and a half ahead of him in second on that occasion. Dark Side Thunder and Capote’s Dream are also worthy of a closer look.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
