Royal Ascot: A Brief History
“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”
These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event – Her Majesty’s Plate – was held here upon her request that very same year. For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768. A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.
It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.
Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats – and today, the issuing of the Lookbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.
Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.
Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.
2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.
Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005 The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006.
In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring.
Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year. 2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.
Last year, King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse. It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.
In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes is set to be run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty.
2023 also saw Frankie Dettori wave farewell to Royal Ascot in unforgettable style, winning the Gold Cup on-board Courage Mon Ami for his 79th winner at the Royal Meeting. He would add two more victories that week before leaving to ride in the USA at the end of the year
This year, prize money at the Royal Meeting reaches eight figures with the total fund across all 35 races in excess of £10 million, an increase of more than 5% on 2023’s figures. With eight Group 1 races and a total of 22 Pattern or Listed level events throughout the five days, Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the world.

Welcoming our Local Community
As part of our Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, last year we launched a dedicated schools viewing and picnic area on Ascot Heath to celebrate the Coronation year. For 2024, we have increased the capacity and today are delighted to welcome 500 students who will be able to enjoy a front row view of the Royal Procession. The children can also experience a race at Ascot with our virtual reality and mechanical horse activity.
This initiative forms part of our wider schools’ engagement programme which includes annual art, fashion, photography and baking competitions, in addition to career talks and history tours.
Tomorrow, we look forward to welcoming 500 residents from our local community who were successful in the annual local resident ticket ballot to win a pair of Queen Anne Enclosure tickets.

Race Histories
2.30pm The Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
Founded in 1840, the Queen Anne Stakes commemorates the monarch who established racing at Ascot in 1711. Run as the Trial Stakes until 1929, the Queen Anne Stakes was first awarded Group 3 status in 1971, becoming Group 2 in 1984. The race, attracting Europe’s top older milers, achieved the highest three-year average rating of any Group 2 race in Britain from 1999 to 2002 according to the then International Classifications and was elevated to Group 1 status accordingly in 2003. Run as the opening race of the week since 2008, it will once again get the Royal Meeting underway and includes Frankel and Baaeed on the recent roll of honour.
3.05pm The Coventry Stakes (Group 2)
Firstrunin1890,theracewasnamedaftertheninthEarlofCoventry,MasteroftheBuckhoundsbetween1886and1892.Thisistraditionally the first Group contest of the year for juveniles and as a result attracts some of the very best precocious young horses, forming part of the high-class opening day card. Many top-quality horses have won this race before going on to achieve greatness, including Canford Cliffs, Dawn Approach and Caravaggio, since the race was promoted to Group 2 status in 2004.
3.45pm The King Charles III Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
AStandPlatewasfirstrunontheRoundcoursein1837,becomingtheRoyalStandPlatein1858.TheracewasrenamedtheQueen’sStandPlate in 1860 for two-year-olds, over the sprint distance of four furlongs, finally becoming the King’s Stand Plate in 1901. Today the race remains a sprint, although now run over the minimum trip of five furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards. In 2008 it was promoted to Group 1. The 2019 renewal was officially the highest-quality sprint race in the world with a rating of 120.25 after Blue Point and Battaash fought out the finish. Nature Strip was a brilliant winner for Australia in 2022 and ended the year as the world’s best sprinter. The race was renamed the King Charles III Stakes ahead of the 2024 running.
4.25pm The St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1)
(British Champions Series)
Named after the Tudor royal residence, the inaugural running of the St James’s Palace Stakes in 1834 was a walkover for the Derby winner Plenipotentiary. This race features the best male milers from the Classic generation, often attracting horses that have run in the British, French and Irish 2,000 Guineas. Frankel, Kingman and Palace Pier are recent stars to have won the race.
5.05pm
The Ascot Stakes (Handicap)
First run in 1839, the Ascot Stakes is run over two-and-a-half miles. Like the Gold Cup and Queen Alexandra Stakes, this race provides a thorough test of stamina. It is one of just four races at the Royal Meeting in which the field passes the winning post twice. As well as attracting some high-class horses from the Jumps sphere, the race normally features horses that will go on to run in the major staying handicaps throughout the season including the Northumberland Plate and the Ebor.
5.40pm The Wolferton Stakes (Listed Race)
First run in 2002 as part of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, this is a Listed race over 10 furlongs for four-year-olds and upwards, having been a Listed handicap until 2017. Addeybb won the race in 2019 before going on to Group 1 success around the world while John Gosden is the leading trainer with four victories.
6.15pm The Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap)
Staged over a mile and three quarters, the Copper Horse Stakes was one of the six additional races to be run at Royal Ascot in 2020. Open to four-year-olds and upwards, Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race’s name being included and it now forms part of the permanently expanded programme It is inspired by the magnificent statue of King George III – mounted on horseback – which marks the end of the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park. The inaugural running was won by Fujaira Prince who went on to win the Ebor at York and was then second in the Group 1 Irish St. Leger and third in the British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day.
Welcome from QIPCO
Our enduring and happy partnership with Royal Ascot is a source of particular pride for my family and we once again look forward to welcoming everyone to the first of five unmissable days of the greatest racing action to be found anywhere.
This week is a celebration of equine and human stars along with its spectators, heritage and pageantry We extend our gratitude as well as our warmest wishes to Their Majesties The King and Queen who we hope will enjoy another special week at Royal Ascot, which the Royal Family has been guardian of for so long.
Ten years ago, QIPCO became Ascot’s first ever Official Partner and our ties have continued to strengthen. We have invested in not only the Royal Meeting but next month’s midsummer showpiece, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, and most importantly QIPCO British Champions Day, the fabulous conclusion of the Flat racing season back here in October
Our family have enjoyed some unforgettable successes of our own here; from Frederik Engels providing Sheikh Fahad with his first winner back in 2011, and we can only hope to build on last year’s slightly frustrating record of three seconds!
This competitive spirit stokes our passion for racing and now specifically breeding. Kameko, our brilliant QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero, is standing on Qatar Racing’s roster at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire and his remarkably bright start at stud fuels great optimism for the future.
Hopefully there will be many more Royal Ascot successes to come and I wish everyone lucky enough to be involved this week the very best of luck.

Retraining of Racehorses Donation
This year, as part of the Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, we are delighted that for every race our Racing Ambassador, Ryan Moore, wins during Royal Ascot, we will donate £5,000 to Retraining of Racehorses, British horse racing’s official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing.
David Catlow, Retraining of Racehorses Managing Director, said, “We are thrilled that Ascot Racecourse Supports has chosen RoR as a nominated charity for this year’s Royal Ascot. RoR’s mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of former racehorses for life, and we cannot do it without the vital and very generous support of organisations such as Ascot Racecourse.
“It promises to be a very exciting Royal Ascot for RoR. With each winner ridden by the brilliant Ryan Moore raising funds for RoR, we will certainly be cheering him on from the sidelines.”
Ryan Moore, added “I’m delighted to be an ambassador for Ascot Racecourse Supports and to help with the work it does in the community Hopefully, I can raise a bit of money at the Royal Meeting for an important cause in Retraining of Racehorses.”
We wish Ryan the best of luck with his 6 rides today:

The King Charles III Stakes
With the permission of His Majesty, the King’s Stand Stakes has been renamed the King Charles III Stakes.
The Group 1 five-furlong sprint, run today at 3.45pm, becomes the fifth race on the Royal Ascot programme to be named after a British monarch with His Majesty The King joining Queen Anne, King Edward VII, King George V and Queen Elizabeth II on the order of running.
Sir Francis Brooke Bt., His Majesty’s Representative at Ascot, said: “We are delighted to have renamed our premier five-furlong sprint in honour of His Majesty The King. The Royal Meeting last year was the first of the new reign and Their Majesties attended on each day. The highlight of the week was Desert Hero’s victory in the royal colours when he won the King George V Stakes in thrilling style.”
Originally created as the Queen’s Stand Plate in 1860, the race title changed to the King’s Stand Stakes with the accession of King Edward VII in 1901. The initiation of the race only occurred because heavy rain made it impossible for the two-mile Royal Stand Plate to take place, so the race was renamed the Queen’s Stand Plate and run over four-furlongs, the only raceable part of the course. Fittingly, a horse named Queen Of The Vale was the first winner.
Nature Strip 2022
Nowadays, the £687,875 Group 1 sprint takes place over five furlongs and is one of today’s highlights. Over the years it has been graced by some of the fastest equine athletes the sport has ever seen with Abernant, Dayjur, Lochsong, Sole Power, Blue Point and Battaash all adorning the roll of honour. 12 horses have won the race twice, starting with Woolsthorpe in 1895 and 1897 all the way through to Blue Point in 2018 and 2019 That latter renewal was the top-rated sprint race in the world that year, as Blue Point led home Battaash.
Trailblazer Choisir was the first Australiantrained horse to win in Britain when successful in 2003 - he has been followed by four more Australians, including Miss Andretti’s track record in 2007 which stands to this day, and most recently Nature Strip in 2022. More history was created last year as Hollie Doyle became the first female jockey to win a Group 1 at the Royal Meeting, on Bradsell.
The most successful jockey in the race’s history is the mighty Lester Piggott with a remarkable seven wins spread over 28 years, starting with Right Boy in 1957 and finishing with Never So Bold in 1985. For three of those victories ‘The Long Fellow’ teamed up with Vincent O’Brien, who is still the leading trainer with five winners

Feature Race Analysis
2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech currently heads the betting in what looks a brilliant renewal of the St James’s Palace Stakes, with connections landing this in 2022 with Coroebus. He was seen denying Rosallion and Alyanaabi at Newmarket and this duo will be seeking revenge. Rosallion won the Irish equivalent race in good style and looks the most likely danger to the well-fancied favourite.
Irish-raider Henry Longfellow is one of two representative from across the Irish channel. Aidan O’Brien usually comes here with a strong hand and today looks no different as he saddles the fabulous National Stakes winner from last year and the outsider Unquestionable who can’t be ruled out still. Metropolitan looked mightily impressive when scoring at the French Guineas last time out but the good-to-firm going might prove a negative. Another traveling over from France is the Jérôme Reyniertrained Darlinghurst Bidding to make it a fiver-timer, he is stepped up from Group 3 company to the highest level with Christophe Soumillon retaining the ride.
Almaqam put his best foot forward to land the Heron Stakes at Sandown by three-and-a quarter lengths and that alone gives him a shot at this level.

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

Race Summary:
French raider BIG ROCK enjoyed his finest day when he ran away with the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over course and distance last October While he managed no better than sixth when Audience stole a march to spring a surprise in the Lockinge at Newbury last month, the son of Rock Of Gibraltar had valid excuses, having stumbled leaving the stalls, and could be a different proposition with that run under his belt. Lockinge runner-up Charyn has already enjoyed a fine season and is feared most in his bid to gain a first Group 1 success. Last year’s QEII runner-up, Facteur Cheval, a winner at the top table at the Dubai Carnival when last seen, also rates a serious contender

Race Summary:
COWARDOFTHECOUNTY looked to have any amount of untapped potential when he comfortably landed a Curragh maiden in April and, given the runner-up emphatically boosted the form in a Listed race on his next start, the form has a glossy appearance. The selection has a big frame to fill but his imposing physique suggests he has a very bright future ahead if handling the forecast faster ground. Aidan O’Brien boasts an excellent record in this contest, having won it on 10 occasions, and the fact he relies on just Camille Pissarro to represent Ballydoyle makes the son of Wootton Bassett a must for the shortlist. Al Qudra, Andesite and Francisco’s Piece rate the pick of the home-trained contingent, with the last-named appealing most after a Listed race success in France 16 days ago.

The King Charles III Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) -
Race Summary:
The high-class Big Evs tasted defeat when he stepped outside of his own age group in the Nunthorpe at York last summer but his record is otherwise mostly exemplary and he is a must for any shortlist. However, the older brigade could again hold court in this fiercely competitive renewal, with last year’s Haydock Sprint Cup winner, REGIONAL, suggested as the strongest contender A close second in the Greenland at the Curragh on his return to action, the selection has been primed for this race and a bold showing is expected. Temple Stakes winner Kerdos is another for consideration, while Twilight Calls, runner-up in this two years ago, and Valiant Force, second to Big Evs in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, are others with solid chances

Race Summary:
In a mouth-watering contest where the winners of the English, Irish and French Guineas look poised to serve up one of the races of the week, NOTABLE SPEECH can put down a marker as the best three-year-old miler around. Charlie Appleby’s charge impressed with the manner of his victory in the 2000 Guineas, making smooth headway from the rear before quickening away from the field with almost push-button acceleration, and the unbeaten son of Dubawi is hard to oppose on that evidence. Rosallion, who finished second to the selection at Newmarket, was last seen scoring gamely in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and warrants the utmost respect in a bid to avenge his Newmarket defeat. A Group 1 winner in the National Stakes, Henry Longfellow is surely capable of better than when finishing a luckless eighth at Longchamp behind Metropolitan.

Formerly useful on the Flat in France, My Lyka was narrowly denied on his stable/hurdle debut over 2m4f at Killarney last month, and switched back to the level for his handicap bow, he warrants the utmost respect for top connections Preference, though, goes to PIED PIPER.
Gordon Elliott’s charge finished a staying-on second in the Cesarewitch on his last start in this sphere and, after another excellent placed effort in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival most recently, this step up in trip can see him return to winning ways off a 2lb higher mark than when finishing a luckless sixth in this race in 2022. Impressive last-time-out winners Tenerife Sunshine and Boher Road complete the shortlist in a typically wide-open affair.

Race Summary:
Jessica Harrington sends Bold Discovery over from Ireland after he took the Group 3 Amethyst Stakes at Leopardstown over a mile and although his stamina remains in question, he could go well at a big price. Astro King won’t mind the faster going predicted here and should do better dropping back in trip after a one-paced effort in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.
ISRAR won the Group 2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket last July when he was over four lengths in front of Derby winner Adayar, his second last time out to Passenger at Chester reads well and possibly makes him the one to beat.

Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot
The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeys is paramount at Royal Ascot and in recent years several major changes have been made to improve welfare standards.
Introduced for the first time at Royal Ascot last year, every horse running throughout the week will undergo an enhanced pre-race examination carried out on arrival at the stables. The process involves:
• A cardiac assessment
• A trot up over 25 metres in a straight line
• An examination of the musculoskeletal system
These examinations are designed to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layer of protection so we know horses are lining up in the best possible health post-travel.
Ascot has invested significant amounts to improve equine welfare in recent years. During the 2004-2006 redevelopment a safer racetrack was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.
In 2016, further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot alongside three equine ambulances which are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.
Ascot Racecourse is giving a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the best turned out horse, and a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the winning horse.

Race Summary:
Willie Mullins won this last year with Vauban and if the early betting is correct, he may do so again with BELLOCCIO A winner over hurdles last month, he won in Listed company for his previous trainer and is potentially well-handicapped off a mark of 100, having previously reached a career-high rating of 108. A Piece Of Heaven looks interesting on his first start for Joseph O’Brien after an easy win at Leopardstown last month but an added 7lb makes life tougher, while Intinso is also respected on his ninth start with the addition of a tongue-tie possibly sparking some improvement.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Royal Ascot
Winners of the following races will earn automatic berths, travel and paid entry fees into the equivalent races at the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar:
•The Queen Anne Stakes
•The King Charles III Stakes
•The Prince of Wales’s Stakes
•The Norfolk Stakes
All four races will be televised live and streamed in the U.S. as part of NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of Royal Ascot.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series presented by America’s Best Racing consists of the best races from around the world and awards each winner an automatic and free entry into the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
It’s simple, they win and they’re in.
In recent history, Queen Anne Stakes winners Barathea and Goldikova have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile while Prince of Wales’s Stakes winners Fantastic Light and Highland Reel went on to be successful in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, for two-year-olds over five furlongs, will receive a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint while the King Charles III Stakes victor gains an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run at 5 1/2 furlongs.
Last year Valiant Force, winner of the Norfolk Stakes, took up that invitation and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint behind fellow Royal Ascot winner Big Evs, who was victorious in the Windsor Castle Stakes. In fact four of the first six in that race ran at the Royal Meeting, including Queen Mary Stakes winner Crimson Advocate and No Nay Mets, who was fifth in the Norfolk Stakes
Meanwhile Warm Heart, who won the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at the Royal Meeting last year, went on to be second in the Filly & Mare Turf behind Inspiral, herself a runner-up here last June. There continues to be a strong line of correlation between success at Royal Ascot and taking that form to the Breeders’ Cup.

Singing around the Bandstand
Racegoers in the Royal Enclosure and Queen Anne Enclosure are invited to join in with the unmissable singing around the bandstand after racing from 6.20pm.
It was the late Lady Jinny Beaumont, wife of Sir Nicky Beaumont, Clerk of the Course from 1969 to 1994, who first introduced this communal sing-along that has become synonymous with Royal Ascot.
She was famed for conducting the band and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that a bandstand was erected to recognise this prized Ascot tradition.
Union Jack flags are provided on a first come first served basis, so come with a good voice and be prepared to sing along to classics such as Land of Hope and Glory, My Way, Daisy Daisy and We’ll Meet Again.
Ascot Racecourse would like to thank the Band of the Scots Guards who will be playing throughout Royal Ascot 2024 and John Park who will be leading the singing.
